Peet's finally hits my side of Midtown, and it's about time! I have been reluctantly patronizing the Starbuck's on 19th & J now and again, because it's a helluva convenient location in my neighborhood. But I no longer need to settle for that swill whilst bopping down J Street. There's nothing like the power punch of Peet's caffeine-laced goodness to cure a weekday hangover from hitting one too many at the local dive bars. Peet's saved my happy ass on the way to work just recently, and for that I thank him. Glad to see cool new businesses moving into the MARRS building on 20th & J Streets. It seems that Peets and Starbucks are head to head in the corporate coffee world with Starbucks winning by their effective locational strategizing and lower prices. Whatever, this just means no lines for me at Peet's. =) This Peet's is better than other Peet's and since all Peet's are superior to all Starbucks I conclude that this Peet's is the best corporate coffee you can find. 1. Why is this Peet's better than other Peet's even though they are exactly the same in menu and in quality? Simple...because they have Soymilk at the mixing counter. Trust me, this is not a frequent phenomena... I have been to many Peet's in my lifetime. Sometimes I just want to switch it up from the boring ol' half and half and this place lets me do it in peace and quiet without having to bug a barista. 2. Why are all Peets better than all Starbucks? I judge on one thing and one thing only: How good the coffee is. These establishments exist primarily to serve coffee so this is adequate enough of a criteria to review them on. True coffee lovers want strong coffee. If you like weak coffee then you are not a coffee lover... you are a milk and sugar lover. Any true coffee lover will agree that Peets pwns Starbucks in strength and in quality of coffee. This is proven by the whole one mississippi of creamer pour time it takes for a large cup of Peets coffee to lighten... compared to the half mississippi it takes to lighten a venti cup of Starbucks coffee. And I've never seen a Starbucks leave out their Soymilk... cheapos. read more

I love this (and every other) Peet's! Staff are so very awesome. It's always a pleasure to interact with them. I love Peet's coffee and fun drinks. Their bakery items soooooo delicious... I really enjoy the products available for purchase. Fun mugs, coffee (of course) and items for tea. The store is always clean and comfy. I love the outdoor tables. First i love the patio here because its filled with different characters here and its a great spot to read a book or just chat on the patio with people watching as well. also there plenty of shades but one con is there are no outlet plugs if you need to charge your phone. there are plenty of tables for people to sit. also there might be bums trying to ask for money when they walk by but it usual isn't a problem. the inside is very cool with ac and i love the back room where you can sit and study and there are outlet plugs as well. there is one bathroom as well. its locked so you will need a key to it. When i am here to study i love to get a hot or ice coffee to drink because it is very strong, stronger than Starbucks and it will for sure keep me awake. if i am not studying and just chilling i would like the tea from here. the tea seem to be less strong and has a good taste. my favorite tea to get here is the green tea. the green tea seems to taste better than Starbucks because there is no minty taste to it. my friend agrees he like the tea here better than Starbucks as well. also i got one large size and a small size and it was under 5 bucks like 4.70 so its reasonable. also if your staying there for a while, you can do a refill for only 1 dollar which is a steal. the baristas here are friendly and tend to patient with the customers and explain and answer peoples questions, so thats a plus. overall its a place i love to come and sit and just observe and chill at. read more

I like the location at 20th & J, but the consistently poor customer service skill is very frustrating. I've never before had an employee hold his hand up and tell me to "WAIT!" when trying to order coffee or anything else. This wasn't the first time or the second. A few of my friends have also had similar experiences with this man. I can't help but wonder whether he needs some extra time off. I hope this bad customer service isn't the norm with others, but I suspect it is. I'm probably just going to go back to Starbuck's if this continues. read more

Careful driving here during weekend evenings. This location is near a lot of bars, and there will be inebriated individuals darting in front of your car, as if they had a death wish. No need to sit at home and play video games. This is your video game. Successfully avoid turning pedestrians into pancakes, and you win! I want to tell you about the wifi, but I to stay off tend my phone when I'm out, and my laptop stays at home, because my online activities are shameful and clandestine, though perfectly legal in most states. So, I am no help on that end. But, my bladder is always full, therefore I can tell you all about the bathroom. It's clean. Nice enough to pay rent to live there. And the coffee? It's consistently good. read more

No offense to those that enjoy the land of Tall, Grande, Venti coffee... But that coffee is not for me. (Don't even get me started on their "We don't brew decaf after..." policy!!) I'm a Peet's guy, and this is a particularly good one. Always super friendly helpful service and fresh, delicious coffee. There is one girl... (Oh, if only I had gotten her name!) That makes a cappuccino that is to die for! If you're in the mood, just ask the barista how her cappuccinos are. I was there one day trying to decide if I just wanted regular coffee, or to splurge... She said, "I make a damn good cappuccino." So I went with it, and boy was she right! Go give them a try. And even if you slip up and ask for a "tall"... they won't snub you (as other not-to-be-named places would) but will likely just joke with you about it and get your small. read more

I've been a huge fan of Peet's for years, and this particular location is one of my favorites because of the comfortable seating available. I'm not particularly fond of Peet's marble tabletops because it makes me feel like they aren't welcoming for patrons to lounge and drink their coffee/tea. But their outdoor patio, indoor cushiony bench and back room seating that accompany the tables at this location make me feel like I can stay there longer than I'm supposed to. I can't drink their regular coffee because it's too bold for me, but their espresso drinks are magnificent and my favorite tea, Yin Hao Jasmine, is always steeped to perfection. Great location, good caffeinated drinks, and comfortable seating. Can't ask for more. read more

As a self-avowed Peetnik, I could go on and on about how much better their coffee is than Temple's, Starbucks, etc. But you've heard all of that before, so here's why this location is better than any I've been to: 1. Unlike all suburban and most urban locations, they always have soymilk out with other coffee accoutrements. 2. Good amount of indoor and outdoor seating with quieter seating in the back by the bathroom. The outdoor seating is very pleasant, on the pretty patio under the trees. 3. Being at the corner of 20th and J, EXCELLENT people-watching opportunities (though I can't say I love the out-of-towner crowd the ice rink has attracted recently). 4. The baristas are always very friendly and efficient - there never seems to be a terrible wait time although the line is often long. And they told me they would brew my favorite coffee on my birthday if I gave them advance warning (they rarely brew Arabian Mocha Java, their tastiest coffee!). read more

I don't like chains - even small chains, although Peet's is by no means a small chain. And certainly Old Soul makes coffee that is just as good, with the benefit of the profits of the venture staying IN sacramento, rather than exiting immediately. However, judged solely as a chain, and compared to other chains, there isn't anything better then Peet's. I grew up near the original shop at Walnut Square in Berkeley and spent many hours there as a kid, waiting in line with my parents, and later as a young adult. Unfortunately, they seem to be trying to out-do Starbucks as far as ambience and spinoff items go, but the coffee ... the coffee... it's real good. Yummy, even. Yummy coffee, need now. read more

Coffee is always fine at any Pete's I'm at........... But the service here is a bit lackluster. The gal behind me in line was almost falling asleep on my shoulder waiting to order some Java to wake her up. Think this might be the training store for newbies? As the line was 8 people long and by the time I got to the register to order my coffee, I forgot what I wanted to order as the gal sleeping on my shoulder behind me started making me sleepy........ Lovely location in midtown, right next to the Farmer's Market on weekends. Good sized patio and interior, fairly nice employees, and not as full of annoying hipsters as I was expecting. That said, it is a chain coffee place and it serves typical Peet's chain drinks, which are okay. I like the location and atmosphere enough to swing it over to 4 stars rather than 3, tho. read more

Hmph. I've been at this location before without issue, but there's always a first time. Sunday I stopped by to get some beans; 2 employees were behind the counter. One saw me at the beans counter and said someone would be with me in a minute. Cool. So I politely waited. And waited as 2 other people arrived at the order counter and received their orders - as I waited. At one point, the other employee grabbed a cup sleeve for that customer at the bean counter...where I was waiting. I decided to wait no longer so I walked out (ended up getting my beans the next day at the Dublin store enroute to work - great customer service as always there). I've done mystery shops for Peet's, so I know what they're employees are supposed to do - that wasn't it. Luckily for Midtown I wasn't a shopper that day..... read more

Peet's. I grew up getting coffee with my Mom at the original on Vine St in Berkeley. I used to work for the "green mermaid," for cryin' out loud, and even then, what'd we go out to as a store? Peets. Those who rate Peets as burned should stick with their Folgers. For those of us who know better, we return, baited by the nectar of the bean. Thank you, baristas of Peets for having some personality, and not being bland and homogenized (in a band? Awesome. Tatts, nice ink- who's your artist? Student? Good luck on your test! Hair dye -looks good). This store is great- definitely getting busier, but still retaining its service quality. And it has the bay area pastries, which is a huge plus (oh, yeah, by the way, do me a favor and leave me ONE banana-blueberry muffin, please? Pretty please?). I'm a straight up, unapologetic coffee drinker, and this place is the only one that can really satisfy - well, okay, Naked coffee is pretty good too, but other than that, nobody measures up, and I've tried them all- even went up to Oregon to the "infamous" land of coffee, and you know what? Crap compared to Peets. Thank you for not expanding too fast and compromising your quality. It's just as good as when I was young, heading to Vine St for a pound of Arabian Mocha Java with my momma. "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" You don't, because Maria is the best Barista in all of Sac. She knows me by name, remembers my order and makes great recommendations when I want to try something new. Peet's is a chain, but you wouldn't know it coming here. Everyone is nice and welcoming and they will make you whatever you like, even if it's not on the menu. Oh, and the coffee is the best caffeine fix you'll find in the handle district. The service here is FABULOUS!!! I love it a friendly place!! They have check in deals, coupons and sometimes free coffee. Sometimes I get a little bashful walking into a place with a free coupon and not purchasing anything else but in no way do they make you feel bad here. So if the idea was to get me to come back, it worked! Location is not the closet to work and I do not pass it on the way to work but when I do have the time I will walk over or drive to the location when I'm in the need of a nice beverage. read more

Do I even need to write a review for this place?!?! It ever so softly, yet with caffeinated vigor, states in a Barry Manilow voice, "Drink me baby, ever so slowly, enjoy me..." Peet's coffee is bold in flavor, much more masculine tasting than Starbucks (not knocking Starbucks.....I have my gold card!)....just saying you don't expect a cup of wimpy coffee if you're used to some other coffee house that is high on sugar low on coffee. I understand not everyone is a Starbucks person. So if that's you, pass Starbucks and another block is Peet's (and Pete's-haha who planned that so well??) The seating outside is really nice but inside the store layout is a little weird, and usually crowded when I'm looking for a place to sit. But staff is super nice and will remember you :) Val, Maria and Lauren are my faves. I do appreciate their unique flavors (pecan praline and maple-hello) and holiday beverages. Love this store! I hit the farmer's market every Saturday a.m. with my kids, and part of that ritual has become breakfast at this Peet's. I appreciate the consistency of the products, but especially appreciate the great service I always get here. The staff are very friendly, and always treat my kids well. Char in particular is always fun. Oh, and even when it gets busy, they move people through the line quickly. If I could fix something, I would wish for more inside seating, but hey...the space is what it is. read more

I've received great and friendly customer service here, and other times I get poor unfriendly emo service. I'll keep coming back though, as I love the location. I've been to Peets a few times and it's usually a solid 3 stars. It's fine, I've just have never had anything there that particularly stands out. But I tried the new Iced Coconut White Mocha recently and it kind of blew my mind. Delish! I'd come back to try their other coconut coffee drinks this summer :) read more

Go here every morning for my low fat latte. Staff is EXTREMELY friendly and will remember your name/preference in quick order. Never get a chance to sit outside on the patio because I'm scurrying off to work but is a great place to people watch. In the corporate world, Peet's beats Starbucks hands down. Their coffee is just way better. I always put $25 on a card so I don't have to remember to bring a credit card or cash and you receive a free drink when you do so.
