The food and drinks are generally good. Convenient location right in the heart of Hillcrest. Unfortunately they have shortened their hours since the lockdown and have not extended them since the reopening, so they close at 5pm these days. One major negative is the restroom - it stank of what seems like sewer gas before the lockdown a year and a half ago, and it still stinks today. If there's some structural issue, it needs to be fixed by the landlord. read more

Let me start by saying, I absolutely love Peet's Coffee. Not only are they upholding real coffee standards (un-like their competitors **starbucks**), they have amazing staff at this location. I am a regular at this location and every time I come in I am met with the most amazing barista in the world, Melanie! Her attention to detail is amazing. She always is so personable and makes my day every time I see her. She makes my drinks the BEST and has the best suggestions ever, sometimes even giving me "custom" drinks to what she thinks I'll like (spoiler: I always like her creations!). Generally, I love Peet's Coffee. It's not all about the beverage. It's the service and atmosphere. But my visit today was a total drag. The COVID safety measures are so over the top. I can't understand what the employees are saying, and then they're getting upset with me when I'm trying to put cream in my coffee. Oh, I have to put cream in my coffee outside? How does putting cream in my coffee put people at risk. But they evidently confused my decaf with cream my husband's black coffee. My husband was disappointed because his black coffee was too watery, and I was disappointed because my decaf americano left me shaking with caffeine jitters! Not happy. read more

It was a tad bitter, but not where it gets to the point that it bugs. I enjoyed it with a nice hit of soy. The scone was excellent. It had just the right amount of lemony flavor. I've been going to Pete's coffee for years. They used to be really great, but now they're just another big corporate entity that doesn't value customer service. Their coffee tastes pretty good, and I will continue to purchase their packaged coffee for the time being. But their corporate "management" is out of touch with what matters to the majority of their customers. Made a point to seek out a nonStarbucks while in San Diego (University Ave branch). Amazingly friendly staff, great atmosphere, quite a few customers who were obviously regular punters chatting with the staff, there's adequate seating outside to chill and watch the world go by, good selection of breakfast foods and to eat throughout the day. This place is a great substitute for Starbucks. Although I wanted so much to give them a good review, there were just problems with the couple of visits that I have been. First time I went was great, the cashier was very helpful and welcoming. The problem was that the drink she recommended wasn't anything special. Not her fault, just I was hoping for more flavor in an iced tea. The coffee is pretty tasty though, with a good balance. The most recent visit is what drove me to write a review. I came in and saw that there wasn't really a line, so i went to the register where I always ordered. The girl making drinks clearly saw me standing there and saw me ask the couple of folks if they were in line, yet she failed to let me know that I wasn't standing in a line. As I was waiting there like an idiot, a line formed at the other register all of a sudden. This was pretty annoying, and what was worse was that there was no sign on the register that I was standing next to stating that it was closed. When I actually made it to the correct register, the lady was very helpful and cheerful, which defused my need to complain, so that was good. She helped with my Matcha Javiva, which was delicious, and she even gave me a heads up on not adding the syrup because it was already sweet, which was good because it would have been crazy sweet. Altogether, mixed feelings about the place, but I wouldn't turn down the place if my friends wanted to go here. read more

Absolutely amazing! This location has the friendliest workers. I walked in undecided about what I wanted and 2 girls helped me with my decision. They didn't rush me or get annoyed I didn't know what I wanted. That's awesome service! I went with their recommendation, the Pumpkin Chai Tea and added Oat milk and it was absolutely delicious. They have everything set up to keep a safe distance too including a little waiting area. I also had the veggie burrito which was ok, but I would not order it again. Just a heads up, you have to ask for napkins when you get your food. However, you can sit outside on a shaded patio to enjoy your coffee or tea. Visited this Peet's coffee yesterday late afternoon and forgot my black fleece jacket on one of the patio chairs. When I realized it we went back over there in the evening but everything on the patio was folded up and moved inside including even the garbage cans. I called first thing this morning and they didn't have the jacket and it didn't seem like they looked very hard. So I asked "do you have a lost and found?" And he said "I'm sorry no sir, someone must've walked off with it". No lost and found. And he didn't offer to take my number if it turned up. While it's entirely possible that someone walked off with it, I'm disappointed to hear that from a company that works hard for customer service they don't even keep a lost and found. After a long hospital shift, I really appreciate good service and delicious meals/drinks. It always takes me at least five minutes to choose what type of pastry or coffee that I'm feeling for the day, but the staff has always been so patient. Their iced coffee is refreshing and doesn't taste bitter or burnt, the way some other coffee places taste. I'm an avid coffee drinker and this place does the job of getting me through the 3pm slump and into the gym after 8 hours on my feet! The inside of the coffee shop is very rustic, plenty of wooden tables and seats to go around. And their wifi is quick! If you need to use the restroom, they have a key attached to a huge spoon that's on the counter. The location is unfortunate. Luckily, I am able to walk from the hospital but the parking lot is very small and the street parking is always loaded. It is also tucked away between two bigger signed restaurants. Been a fan for years. Almost every morning like clockwork I get my large cold brew with an add shot. Never once been treated rudely or demeaning. Yes there is homeless people around but what can you do ? Go a block away and there is a guy smoking meth offering handjobs for 2$ . That is Hillcrest for you . Disappointed with Pete's Coffee in Hillcrest. I stopped in today to pick up a pound of coffee and a beverage. On the way in, a homeless man who was hungry asked me for a bagel. He was did not have a mask. I told him sure.... I went and ordered my coffee and bagel and asked the cashier if should could please give me a fresh disposable mask for the man outside that I'm purchasing this bagel for. She had to "check" with her manager. The manager said NO without skipping his rhythm of making espresso drinks as it's their corporate policy. I find this disappointing that a business that is lucky enough to still be open does not care enough about our community to offer someone outside their store, clearly homeless and without a mask, a fresh mask. Not only is it the right thing to do in helping those less fortunate, but they are also doing their customers and our entire community a service by protecting everyone. I will be bringing them a fresh box of 50 masks, which they sell right across the street at Walgreens (very inexpensively i might add.) I will attach a note letting them know these are to be used exclusively for anyone that is not fortunate enough to have a fresh, clean mask or any mask at all. Clearly corporate greed is all that everyone thinks about at this company. But even the lack of compassion and humanity from these workers really is disheartening. Masks at COSTCO are 16 cents each. I've been here before and I can say that things are consistent. The clientele seems to be on the older side. I ordered the dark roast (which happened to be the Holiday blend at the time), and it was good. It was indeed a dark roast, but it also wasn't watered down or anything like that. Good flavor and aroma. The pastry selection leaves something to be desired. This time I got a bacon & cheddar sandwich, it came out hot but the bacon was not fully cooked. Otherwise it was good. Also, the pumpkin/chocolate loaf was on the dry side, particularly the outside. Flavor and smell were there, but edibility was low. read more

After a typically massive breakfast at Tractor Room on the morning of Christmas Eve, the girlfriend & I decided that some Peet's coffee might help in our vain attempt to fight off the impending food coma. When it was time to order our drinks, we were informed that Peet's Coffee gives away free regular coffee drinks all day Christmas Eve. Every Peet's location tries to raise funds for a local charity on Christmas Eve & the free coffee is to encourage donating. So we ordered & I donated. We left with great coffees + the warm & fuzzy feeling from giving. Food coma, however, would not be denied, even with the boost of caffeine. Peet's is my favorite coffee chain & nice touches like this further affirm that. BTW, parking at this Peet's can be a bitch, but that's par for the course in this neighborhood. read more

This place opened up when Starbucks did, and I never went here until now. Now I know why. They are a chain who happens to have smirky, unprofessional employees who don't do their jobs right. From the cashier in all his dreadlocked glory (it was tied up, but a bit unsanitary with it flying everywhere), to the barista not wearing gloves (although I'd just say she was a grumpy woman), I ended up with watered-down tea that had no sweetness whatsoever. They were both unhelpful when we asked for something not too cloyingly sweet. There is a difference. Know it. Just merely adding honey does not make it sweeter. It seems to me that it's the barista's job to know. When she called out my name, she actually left the hard plastic squeezer WITH the teabag inside the cup, all the while pushing it over to me, which indicated to me it was ready to drink. Big deal, I took it out. As she saw me taking the tea bag out, she handed me a small cup to put it in. What she should've done was at least take the plastic thing off before serving. I looked at my receipt while waiting because the price seemed high for an unadorned, simple tea. Honey added...seriously? At that point I should've said, "Now kindly make my tea in the size I originally ordered, not the larger size you charged me for." But I didn't b/c the point would've been lost on her since she most likely would've regarded it as moot. I could tell she would have gotten an attitude. I asked for a Small, and she charged for a larger size. Medium. But. I just went on my merry way and my daughter and I left, instead of sitting down inside. The manager of this store needs to take charge. Will never return to this store again. Do not recommend. read more

Better espresso drinks than Starbucks anytime. Once I tried Peet's, Starbucks was never the same. I'm an espresso drink kind of person not the traditional cup of coffee of the day. I've had different kind of lattes and espresso drinks and have always been satisfied. Excellent coffee, great service. I love how they always run boiling water through the coffee sieve in between each espresso shot, (which are double shots, btw) so you don't get the sometimes present rancid oil flavors. Iced latte's were perfect for those warm/bright San Diego afternoons. They put a bit of steamed foam in along with the cold milk. Good stuff! Great service, warm ambience. It's a happening, very busy place. Parking is difficult, but they do have a lot which was always very full, but we were always able to find a spot in since people run in and out so quickly...and it's free to use if you buy something in Peets or the neighboring (delicious) bakery.
