Haven't been in a Peets in awhile, but happy to say still great coffee in a great neighborhood. My girlfriend and I came this afternoon and we both had the peppermint mocha holiday espresso drink. What a difference from the Starbucks' version. This peppermint mocha had a caffeine kick to it. Reinforced that it really is about the coffee; then about the fou fou dressing. Several tables up by the window facing the street, and a nice bench further in. And as with any coffee shop, an unisex restroom. Espresso drinks are ordered at the register up front, and whole beans are handled at the register in the back. Great selection of teas which is what sets Peets from places like Starbucks and Tully's. As we sat on the bench near the back, we observed a steady stream of customers buying whole coffee beans. The only con - sharing the bench with a man who attempted to give us a sermon about God. LOVE Peet's! It's the first time we went to this location. A bit tiny but very cozy! They got my Med Cinnamon Hazelnut Almond Milk Latte perfect - and very HOT the way I like it! I make it a point to not leave bad reviews but this location I've personally had it. Been going here for years and my orders almost never comes out right recently. This morning was the last straw. The portion of my order was not made and I patiently wait like i always do until I finally asked. Then the manager points to a table that doesn't have my first initials and said to check there. Well, no drinks there and it was said with an attitude They said it didn't print when the label I'm looking at clearly said it so the items that were missing were not made. I know they're trying their best during these times but all of my mobile orders... not happy. I go to sloat and that's my favorite location in the city. I called 45 minutes before I needed my order to give them enough time to make one coffee traveler and a dozen pastries for a meeting I had that morning. When I arrived and asked for my order the cashier had no idea what I was talking about so he asked the manager, Allison, about it. The manager had taken the order but forgot to make it. She made no attempt at apologizing just slowly started to get the traveler box together. I asked her how long it would take and she said about 10 minutes, which I did not have. I told her I was disappointed in the service and would now be without treats for my meeting- again, no apology, nothing. I walked out. I've had so many bad experiences with the staff at Peet's across the Bay Area and am wondering who does the hiring and training. I really like Peet's, definitely not one of my FAVORITE ones, but it has a special place in my heart. Sometimes I'll get off the train at West Portal, walk down two blocks, get my small vanilla latte, walk back up the street, stop at Noah's, and then walk back to West Portal to wait for the train to go to school. It's not my daily routine, because usually I cannot wait that long for my morning coffee. It's kind of annoying that there is not enough seating on the inside. Or outside for that manner... but the employees here are always very friendly to me, cheerful enough at 8 am in the morning...and don't mess with me once they see the half-dead/half-awake/give-me-my-goddamn-coffee look on my face. read more

I've actually never been to this Peet's, but I am cheating and giving them 5 stars solely on the basis of their karaoke performances. I have seen the employees of this Peet's go to The Mint twice now and as a karaoke regular, I typically hate parties and groups but Peet's West Portal defies the stereotype of annoying group sings (it never works out, people, MAN UP and sing by yourself) and picking songs you think you know, but actually don't. Yes, I'm looking at you, assholes who pick "Baby Got Back", "The Humpty Dance", and "Bohemian Rhapsody" and are then shocked to find out that the song has actual lyrics. Extra stars for Victor, who I'm hoping is a manager here, because anyone who can sing "Eye of The Tiger" and "When Doves Cry" and manage to KILL at both of them, deserves to be in charge of something. read more

I LOVE Peet's Coffee so much I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant. I especially LOVE this Peet's Coffee. Peet's is great in providing an experience that is full of character and individualism, does not feel like part of a franchise. West Portal Peet's excels in this department. The staff is friendly, adorable and really great, the coffee is always fantastic and the setting is wonderful. I love this place. I work at a cafe nearly everyday, and if you need to work, keep walking, because unfortunately they only give you one hour on their wi-fi at Peet's and it's really annoying to log in. They require passcodes that are printed on a receipt and you have to ask for when you pay. Sometimes you have to ask for another passcode, because it won't work. And if you have two devices, forget it. Only one passcode per device. They have good tea. Order the Rare. But one time I ordered it and they gave me a tiny pot with a giant coffee mug to pour it into. Are you kidding? Peet's offers tea & coffee tastings, so I imagine their employees will eventually get it right in the tea area, since they are targeting an audience who wants to learn about tea or already knows about tea. Can't wait, because it is pretty decent tea for a commercial cafe. Not a place for romance. Pure business here, unless you're newly in love (in that case ANY PLACE can be romantic!) and you don't want to whisper sweet nothings, because it's bustling and loud. Bathroom is clean and there is ample sitting. Nice light at the front. read more

This is the birthplace of my longest running addiction. I grew up in this neighborhood and it's rich, strong coffee helped me get through high school. (D+!? YESSS!! THANKS PEET'S!!) They should really add a drip drain because for years there was a little sign that said "Please do not pour coffee in garbage can," which was only effective at making me feel guilty about pouring coffee in the garbage can. It's been a year since my last review which I gave Peet's coffee a 4 star. Everything is pretty much the same, coffee is consistent with other Peet's Coffee and it's not burnt from sitting around too long. It's also a very sociable atmosphere. It's a much older crowd when I usually stop by here in mornings. Most people seem to know each other. I'm upping it to 5 stars b/c I saw one of the employees help one of the patrons out to their car. I rarely see people go out of their way to help others but this employee did. So, if you're in west Portal this is the coffee place to go to. Your only options are Starbucks and Toast. I dearly love Peet's, as a local institution and as a purveyor of excellent coffee. This particular location gets knocked one star for their annoying lack of a drip grate. If you don't want me to pour it in the garbage, you should probably install one of those drip drains pretty soon, because I'm sure not going to go back up to the counter every time and either hold up the line or worse, wait in it, for a disgruntled employee to angrily demand "how much?" As if I'm insulting their handiwork in pouring the coffee in the first place. I just want some room for (soy) cream, okay? It shouldn't be that big of a deal. And don't even try to ask these girls for special requests like soy milk or sugar-free vanilla syrup. It may happen grudgingly, but it probably won't be right anyhow. Most of the stars remain intact, because it's still a Peet's, with all the goodies that go along with that (minus the drip drain) and the people-watching here is priceless. read more

Update: Maybe it was a bad patch last time I came of lids but came in recently and ordered coffee; The results no spills what so ever, Whoo hooh!!!! I have to say that was the reason I would not come in as often as I am in the neighborhood due to the fact of spilling with your previous lids. The lids you have now Rock no spills or mess when sipping your hot and fresh coffee. Now I can go to my local Peet's for your oh so delicious yet not bitter or flavorless coffee. Peet's = God's gift to coffee. Please do yourself a favor and stop here if you're in San Francisco or the vicinity as opposed to another ubiquitous coffee chain that's sure to also be close by. The coffee here is actual, robust coffee...not the drivel you get from the lady in green. Yes, it's expensive to get coffee shop coffee all the time so all I can say is treat yourself once in a while and make your own at home the rest of the time. I would say this is a great Starbucks alternative with their stronger coffee, but hey, it's another chain, and one thing that really pisses me off about this Peets is its lack of quality seating. You see, you don't just go to a coffee shop to get your caffeine fix, but a lot of times you want a place to chill, maybe read the paper or have relaxing conversation with a friend. Starbucks, just down the street, is unfortunately more inviting and lets in a lot more afternoon sunshine to go with your vanilla latte. And while they have two smallish tables outside, because the storefront and the sidewalk aren't very wide, they're a bit cramped and don't give you ample room, to say, pull out some cigarettes without imposing your carcinogens on patrons and passerbyers alike. read more

Best coffee on the block. This is what coffee should be like, strong, smooth and hot. Awesome strong lattes with great foam on the top. Why is it so hard for Starbucks to make a hot cup o' joe? Yes, the line can be long, but that's just all the people with good taste waiting for their coffee. Pastries go quick at this location, but the cinnamon twist and apple pastry are good. And for a chocolate rush, the chocolate truffle cookie is to die for. read more

What has happened to PEETS? As a fan of Peets Coffee from the early 70's in Berkeley, CA. I am shocked at the coffee served at this Peets on West Portal. At first taste, I thought my weak coffee, (I know, weak coffee at Peets?) was do to the fact I asked for nonfat milk in a mocha latte. I turned it back in and asked for a regular latte with regular milk. It also was WEAK! Peets used to be my favorite coffee because they put 2 shots of expresso in their lattes. Well, no more, my friends, these lattes are weaker than a competitor down the street. The coffees are watered down. And still cost $3.50!!! Skip this place and walk a half block and get much better lattes. read more

i love the coffee here it is always SO good! in specific, Klaryssa has been my barista and cashier every time and she is incredible. she knows exactly how to make you feel at home in the store and have short but personal conversations. she always knows how to make customers laugh and make sure we have the best experience at peets. definitely an A+ spot. read more

You would think there's not much difference between one Peet's and the next, right? And in principle, there is not. But this Peet's has a random assortment of staff, some of which are more competent and friendly than others. I find that a few of the baristas/cashiers in particular to be really condescending. I can't explain it exactly, but the way that they serve the coffee makes it seem like they are doing you a great favor in so doing. It's kind of irritating, and I am crabby enough before I get my caffeine without having to be irritated by a condescending barista. In addition, there's a lot of variation in how they make the drinks. I've been to this Peet's and gotten a perfect nonfat cappuccino (right amount of froth, right temperature, etc.) But there were several other times when the cappuccino was drowning in milk, like a latte. Other times when it was bone dry and I had to get them to remake the drink. Other times when they used the wrong type of milk when I had specifically asked for fat free. Sure, making a drink incorrectly could happen at any establishment, including a Starbucks. However, my drink has been inconsistent many more times at this particular Peet's location than at any of the other Starbucks or Peet's that I frequent. I imagine that this is because the waitstaff turns over too fast, they don't get to learn the drinks well enough. Come here for the coffee, not for the staff. And if your drink isn't perfect, get them to remake it. read more

I think they chose the wrong location, the doorway is kind of hard to get in and out of because of the way things are setup inside. The place seems long, crowded and too small. But who cares... what about the coffee? I went there today (it was my second visit, I went last week also) and got a large iced-Americano again, and once again it was perfect and delicious. I only drink Peet's when I need more pep in my day...I mean when I really feel sluggish. This Peet's remind me of the one at Greenbrae, where Baristas pay attention....really pay attention. I am not one of those who orders...Skinny Machiatto with a little bit of this and a drizzle of that...I just want medium coffee and that's it..and easy as it may sound there are Barista's still who effs it up....but not this one. This is the S l o w e s t Peet's I've been to. I am basing this on at least 5 visits, never during morning rush. All visits have been at average times throughout the day, with differing amounts of customers. They (the employees) just have NO thought for you, and that maybe you just want to get your latte and go. I have been amazed, really, at the lengths I've waited. And, I would say maybe it's jinxed bad luck, like how I always pick the wrong line at the grocery store. But the slowness has happened too many times. Stores have a style, and a culture, and this one just beats to a slower drum. (Never had a bad drink there.) read more

The restroom is a disaster. There's no mirror, no coat hook, the trash can lid doesn't work, and the paper towel dispenser is usually empty and the toilet paper dispenser is often empty. Since these conditions have been present for several years, it's obvious that management doesn't care. At one point a couple yars ago, someone installed two coat hooks in the wall above the trash can. Terrible location. Both coat hooks disappeared. Why can't they install the coat hook on the back of the door? Why is that so hard? This Peet's Coffee place also charges more than other Peet's locations. read more

I usually come over here a lot since it's in my neighborhood, especially during my college years. I spent so much time to study here in the morning. During my visit today, the girl gave me a cup of coffee with so much dirt on it. She tried not to give me a new one by saying "it will take time to brew" when I requested to exchange one. Then she gave me one even worse that you can't see it if you don't finish the coffee!!!!!!!!! Please see the attached picture. I really miss the people who worked here before!!!! If Peet's really cares about their business, please have some staffs like the ones from 155 Montgomery to train them. They are really nice and working really hard!!! I'm completely addicted to peet's coffee (actually the iced lattes). But the west portal one is by far my fave branch. I love going here when I have a lot of reading or school work to do. When San Francisco actually has a sunny day, its great to sit outside. Why bother driving here? Youre right next to the west portal muni station. Plus pretty much everyone that works there is super friendly, and I'm sure that more then half the staff know what I like to drink. (Considering I've been going there for at least two years now.)
