I love this shop! I've been coming here for almost a year and the morning staff has always been super friendly.

The three stars is specifically for the coffee because I love Peet's. The staff that works there is just is just so rude. There is one guy that works there that is always polite and professional, but I've only seen him maybe twice. If I didn't work so close and so early in the mornings I would never go back. I'm not a Starbucks drinker but based on the customer service I ALWAYS receive there, I might just switch it up. It's hard to believe that people that unprofessional manage to keep their jobs. read more

Normally I avoid reviews of large franchise style restaurants(chili's McDonald's etc). I also typically avoid Peet's on general principles, on the theory that it's starbucks jr. This location has some very satisfying quirks that in my opinion set it apart from the rest of the massive number of starbuck/peets coffee places that can be found on every other street corner on planet earth. They have their own parking area in back, and parking is san jose is not the sheer mission impossible that parking is elsewhere in the bay area. Shouldn't have too much trouble finding a spot is what I'm saying. The coffee, sweets and overall layout are pretty much indistinguishable from every other Peets, the two things that set this Peet's apart are the adoption of the location by the neighborhood characters and the super awesome management. There are a number of eccentric local types that have made this their hangout. They are typically (but not universally) older, retired, hyper literate, and insanely eccentric. One has a pet bird that he walks around with on his shoulder. That's kind of awesome. I regret to say that I had a small disagreement one day with the staff. I ordered a cookie which had what it appeared to be small shard of glass. After some small back and forth with the manager who was unfailingly calm and polite, We (the manager first, and some small time later, myself as well) eventually determined that it was in fact a decorative sugar sprinkle from the Halloween cookies one row up. That was my misconception, and he offered to comp me anyway. That manager dude was super professional and handled what could have been a sticky situation(unhappy customer with glass-not the sugar kind, but the kind that's in windows-in a purchase) with aplomb. Five stars for a mass chain franchise? Well, yeah. The occasionally weird and funky vibe mixed with an unflappable and straight up store manager made it so on my visits. read more

Let me start off by saying that this is not specific to this Peet's location, it just happens to be the one I come to the most so it is the one I used to write a review about. That being said, let's get this mofo underway. I love Peet's for a variety of reasons. The first and most important reason is that the coffee kicks ass and they serve varying blends on a daily basis. After all, they say variety is the spice of life so what better way to kick off the day with a bit of that variety. Now let's move on to the actual environment inside a Peet's. I like to go to a coffee shop to read or maybe do a little writing (I know, aren't I pretentiously hip and cool), so I generally like the atmosphere to be quiet, soothing and relaxing. Peet's is perfect for this because they play CLASSICAL MUSIC! Give me a little piano, maybe some violins, a chair to sit in, a table to read and write on and you can consider me a happy camper most likely sporting some bad coffee breath. Don't worry, I won't be talking to you, so the coffee breath thing shouldn't be an issue. I used to live in Long Beach where there was only one Peet's and a Starbucks was right next to my house so I had to go there out of convenience quite a bit to my dismay. Now the music in a Starbucks can sometimes be alright, but it can suddenly change into something altogether not alright. I'd be sitting there reading on a chair, maybe some Spanish guitar playing in the background and then suddenly would come the frantic auditory assult of tribal bongo drums and aggressive chanting which would jolt me right out of the pages of the book and into an agitated state of high strung tension. It would be the kind of music that made you feel like you were in a movie running from a tribe of cannibalistic warriors, but you didn't know the terrain and they were gaining on you with every misguided step you took. I don't know about you, but that's not really a relaxing feeling for me. Anyway, let's move on to the customers of a Peet's. I know it's crazy, but they actually order COFFEE! I'm not standing in line behind captain douchemo Jones who's trying to order some semi-coffee related beverage with a description that is more complicated to describe than explaining how to calculate the acceleration of gravity on a planet with twice the radius of the sun but 1/3 the mass. That is another thing I hate about Starbucks. I just want a regular cup of coffee and I've got to wait behind fat housewife Sally with no job and an insatiable appetite for ordering things even the queen of England would feel pompous for ordering. Fat Sally: "Yes, I would like a caramel mocha frappuccino, heavy on the frap, light on the ciono with an extra squirt of caramel, 2 and 3/4 squirts of vanilla, low fat, non-dairy whipped cream and just a touch of the yolk of an endangered Condor egg." Me: "Hey fuctard, get out of the way, Baskin Robin's is down the street if you want a milkshake, I'm trying to order a cup of coffee." That is why Peet's rules and Starbucks can tongue my.............well, no need to get obscene. read more

This particular Peet's serves up some solid tea and coffee choices. The best thing about this location is how roomy; yet, cozy it can be. There are plenty of nice seats to sit in, enjoy some tea, and read a book. Unfortunately, the sun can come in pretty hard from one side so it can be tough to relax. But other than that, everything is A-OK with this place. read more

I used to be more a Starbucks kind of gal (I found Peet's coffee alittle too bitter) but after spending some time at this location I've found that I like the Peet's environment much more than the Starbucks. Still don't care much for the coffee, but this review is for this location's ambiance. My dad is a regular so it is nice to grab a cappuccino and sit and read the paper with him. When I visit my family in Milpitas I make a daily habit of hopping on the 880 for a fifteen-minute drive to get to this Peet's. The view from inside onto the wide intersection of the slightly run-down 1950's neighborhood has the effect of the Paris, Texas soundtrack. Inside, tables are placed far apart, but this is the funny thing: people are much louder than people at cafés that have normally-spaced tables, so the net effect is the same. And here I've found something more annoying than aspiring writers and their laptops at cafés: mid-level managers conducting meetings, doing spreadsheets, and talking LOUDLY ON THE PHONE. I even saw two different job interviews. You just have to put on your headphones and turn your chair towards the windows that look out to the intersection. This Peets has free wi-fi with a two-hour limit. parking is available in the back and on the side street. read more

I love my morning Latte at Peets. Over the years the staff have become like family. Many mornings my first conversation of the day begins at Peets. Their coffee is the best. That having been said I am posting this review as a WARNING! For years I have enjoyed the "LOW FAT" Pumpkin Ginger Muffin. Being "low fat" I erroneously assumed they weren't to high in calories. Boy, was I wrong. I recently started attending Weight Watchers and am keeping track of what I eat. Last Saturday I figured I would indulge and have a muffin with my latte. Not sure of the actual nutritional information I inquired as to whether they had a listing for their baked goods. I was given a binder to look through and found my beloved pumpkin ginger muffin. Are you ready for this? Here you go..... 460 calories, 4 grams of fat, 3 grams of fiber and 77 grams of carbs. The Weight Watcher points value is 10. One muffin is a third of my food intake for the entire day. So, what do you think? Is this deception to label a food as low fat and implying that it might be healthy? I realize that this is a common practice among business and we are each ultimately responsible for what we put in our mouths. You may want to know that there is nothing on the baked goods list under 370 calories. So now you've been warned. read more

While I am loathe to write a short review: this is a coffee shop. It has a slightly different vibe from Starbucks (like the one directly across the street) but it still has that mass produced coffee bar vibe. Menu is easy to navigate and I like that they stuck with Small, Medium, Large. Hot and Iced Coffees & Teas - and in between. I went with a medium Iced Vanilla Matcha Latte which was simple and cool. there is outdoor seating, but with the recent sidewalk construction, not the nicest, but still worth it for people watching. For a better plan - hit up the book store down the road, and then take your new book here. read more

OK, I am not knocking Peet's. The coffee is still Peet's. What I am knocking is the building. Every time I come into this store, I get woozy, light headed and nauseous. I am not the only one ... my mom does too. We took a look around the building and saw a bank of those new Smart Meters from PG&E. I don't think that is a coincidence. It's not fair to knock stars off from Peet's since it may not be their fault, but I had to point that out. I usually stop here before heading to the train a few blocks down The Alameda. You get the usual good service and great coffee. Usually just what I need on the way back home. But I don't think I will go back until they fix the possible meter issue. read more

I know a lot of people in the Bay who preach Peet's over Starbucks, but I'm pretty sure it's only because of their own anti-big business or other political bias against Starbucks, because frankly the coffee does not taste all that different to me. This Peet's location however is rather nice. I like the classical music selection as opposed to the high volume randomness of Starbucks. The place is also very clean and the staff is very mello/friendly. Just has a calmer vibe than the Sbux across the street. read more

This is my 'home' Peet's. I get great joy sitting outside and looking across the street at Starbucks and seeing everyone on their laptops typing madly away. I like to make up stories that they are writing an angry email to their boss or an ex-friend. But I realize they are all at separate tables inside and out .. on their laptops, net books, smart phones...and I realized something - Do people talk to each other anymore? Sometimes I have the urge to walk across the street with my Peet's coffee cup and ask what screenplay the mad typist is typing. heh. The staff has always been on point and polite .. even the hipsters :-) I've never seen this Peet's dirty or unorganized, even when they are putting out new goodies on the shelves. I like this Peet's because it's a bit bigger than most, they do have a good amount of seating and a lot of plugs for the computer folk. Even on super busy days there you still get your coffee in a timely manner. Sometimes the conversations you hear while waiting for your coffee makes the wait worth it :) read more

Don't get me wrong, I love Peet's. I mean I looooove Peet's. But this one's a little rough around the edges. They are slow to acknowledge your presence, slow to take your order, and slow to make your drink. I got more jittery from waiting for my order to be filled than I did from the caffeine. This Pete's Coffee is always packed in the morning! You'll find plenty of regulars here with newspapers. The man who took my order was very sweet and enlightened my sour mood that day. Everyone had a smile on their face and I now think that it's a Pete's hospitality thing. I drink coffee everyday and although their coffee gave me a tummy ache, I'll still come here until my stomach gets use to it lol. I love Peet's. I like them because I'm not a coffee drinker, and Peet's has excellent tea (unlike some other coffee shops I could name). If Peet's were a woman, I'd marry her. This particular Peet's is in a good spot-- it's nice to watch people and traffic on The Alameda. It's roomy and has lots of tables. You can also watch people walk into the Starbuck's across the street and shake your head at their poor taste. read more

You got Starbucks and Peet's people and on the alameda both are right across from each other with the alameda separating these capulets and montagues of coffee. I am a Starbucks person (I admit it) but one day the power went out on our side of the street and I needed some coffee. So there I went as a traitor off for my 30 pieces of silver...across the road... It's a nice place to sit and have coffee. More mellow than Starbucks and the people that served me were ok too. 3 to 4 stars I thought. Until one day I went there to get something sweet (Starbucks had run out) and I saw someone from Peet's making a homeless person leave. Now fair enough, had he been bugging people maybe that would have made sense but the big Peet's guy did it in such a humiliating way that everyone on the street felt awkward. Poor homeless dude. I could just give them one star because this douche did this horrible thing and I want to (dude you suck!) but in all honesty this Peet's itself is ok. Their coffee is not for me, their selection of pastries is super small, the place is mellow but is not as much fun as many other coffee places I have been AND they have this douche who is mean to homeless people and that is why it's getting 2 stars. Be nice to homeless people and I will add some stars but right now you guys are on my shit list. read more

I've been going to this Peet's about 4-5 times a week since they opened. I buy both drinks and beans. It's like home away from home. The staff know me - although, I would think they'd remember by name by now - and are always chipper (or pleasant at a minimum). This is a "training store" - or at least it was a while back. As a result, sometimes you'll see a lot of staff in and out - but then you'll run into them at other Peet's after their training. Re. the person peeved 'cause they don't have fresh drip on hand at all times, well, coffee that's freshly brewed for the customer is the best. If you're in a hurry and don't care about little coffee flavor nuances, I highly recommend the Starbucks across the street. They're always fast. If you care more about a well rounded flavor and staff who know more than one should ever know about coffee (and tea), go to Peet's. read more

When my kids were little I spent time at Starbucks - at a LOT of Starbucks locations in the area. Then the feel of Starbucks changed, my local stores weren't as warm and friendly as they'd once been - and I was a REGULAR! And the coffee had gotten predictable. I like a reliable cup of coffee, but I needed a little something more. So, I decided to try Peet's on The Alameda. It was true love. This shop treats you like family. They are just as kind and helpful to a newnik as to a regular Peetnik. Things are light, friendly and fun, yet efficient. This attitude comes from the top. Management is always a pleasure to deal with, whether it's ordering coffee for an event or just getting some advice on coffee beans. Every member on the crew knows their stuff. The drinks are made quickly and just right. If you EVER have a problem you just let them know and it's fixed. Not a problem, not a question. They are simply the best at what they do and it shows. The store itself is always clean and spacious with plenty of room to move around - even on those days or times when the tables and chairs are packed. I love this shop because it draws walking business - a sign of a great neighborhood haunt - and quick coffee stoppers alike. It's as nice a place for a business meeting over coffee as it is a place to take your kids for a quick breakfast. The choices in baked goods, sandwiches and breakfast items are many with the healthy and treat crowds both satisfied. Though, I WISH the cherry turnover was a year-round item...YUM! The drinks here can have a little more umph than at Starbucks IF YOU WANT THEM TO. You can also ask to have the coffee strength toned down (short pull), so it works for everyone. The pre-packaged tea and coffee selections are what you would expect at a Peet's - plentiful and varied - including special seasonal items. They also offer high quality coffee and tea makers, mugs, cups and accessories. This is the good stuff. Think gifts! Peet's is also big on supporting local and international causes. They make it so easy for me to give back through coffee purchases and donation organization. I do my Holiday Giving Tree and Back To School donations through this store because I know my donations will get to the right people and on time. Couldn't be better. This Peet's is always busy. Even though there's a Starbucks across the street, this place still has a line that sticks near the door when entering from the Alameda side. On the times I came here, I wasn't in a particular rush to get out of here while waiting in line but the staff were very apologetic when I got to the front about the long wait. That is always appreciated! My coffee and iced lattes were decently made but an extra thumbs up for them going the extra customer service mile. read more

What a bummer...been here 2 times in the last few weeks and the employee that works the morning (weekday) shift has the WORST attitude. He's grumpy, and clearly hates his job. He's rude to people that ask questions, and super unhelpful. Here's a recommendation-help people that are aimlessly walking around (with a mask on) in the store. This is new to people, and any help and/or direction is appreciated. Have some patience. We are humans all going through the same thing. I don't typically yelp coffee chains but I thought I should at least pay homage to Peet's since it's one of my favorites, even over Starbucks. Had the decaf iced coffee ($1.60 for a small) today. I loved how the guy offered me the option of pouring the small in a medium cup so that I would have plenty of space for cream. Wasn't that sweet? Anyway, Peet's always serves amazing coffee. I saw on Oprah that she allows herself a cup of Peet's a day. And it's a treat! Love it! read more

(+) - small parking lot in back - caffe mocha (-) - one hour of internet Wanted to find a coffee place I could get some work done near sjsu where parking was free and easy to find. Decided on this Peet's so that I didn't have to find street parking. Got a medium caffe mocha with whipped cream, and it was great. Employees are friendly. For internet, you have to get a code from an employee, go on internet explorer and enter it on the welcome page (didn't pop up when I tried with google chrome). If you need outlets, I think the two small tables against the wall when you first come in each have one, and there are two sets against the walls near the window facing the main street (alameda). It would be ideal if they could install some near the counter with stools though.... No problems with the coffee and parking is easy but I really don't like that you only get one hour of internet here, stick with starbucks or philz if you need unlimited. read more

5 stars for the Dark Chocolate Caramel Mocha Freddo and pumpkin scone. the freddo (which i guess is their answer to the frappuccino), was rich, thick, and yum yum delicious! Maybe it was the dark chocolate, but the taste was incredible! the pumpkin scone had a perfect sugar coating and was soft and moist....mmmmm...pumpkin scone....mmmmmm. The people watching was pretty amusing. I think the neighborhood (the alameda) is really cute and has a real "everyone knows everyone" feel to it. I'm not sure about the staff. The girl who took my order wasn't very pleasant, and the rest of them seemed more interested in shooting the shit than making sure the drink order was right. The girl making my drink had to scoop a mound of whipped cream off the top once she stopped talking long enough to realize that I had asked them not add it. To be fair, this was my first trip to peet's , so it still has time to win me over. For now, I say go for the product...judge for yourself on the service. read more

I could talk about Peets in general but this review is dedicated to the team of friendly, competent staff! Boom. Won't find a more stacked team in any comparable business. Everyone here has an AWESOME attitude, friendly, professional and still keeps pace with the business. Normally you'd find either super efficient robots or chatty Cathy's not cognizant that line has to keep moving. Here, the interactions feel genuine. Dyed in the wool...Peet's Fan for a long time. This is my neighborhood spot. #1. They open before 0600...therefore, they are my go to Coffee Mecca before I put on my car for my commute. #2. Peet is my best friend! Been coming to this location on the way to work for my caffeine fix for almost 10 years. Parking can be a little tricky but always available. There seems to be more employee turnaround these days but I still randomly run into Ex-Baristas that call me by my 'drink order'. The people here are very nice and remember you by name and drink. They always engage in conversation with you when they have time. The food is great and the drinks are great. I get an iced Americano and the espresso tastes carmelly and smooth. To me the other coffee place espresso tastes so burnt. This place is kinda dirty though. read more
