OMG, I have been looking for a legit Peruvian restaurant in Houston for SO long and I finally found it. I have been to pretty much every Peruvian restaurant in the city and this is the best by far. This is seriously as authentic as it gets, I feel like Im actually in Peru lol. The service was amazing, super fast and friendly (I think she was the owner) and the food just fantastic. As a Peruvian I can tell you : Best Peruvian food you will find in Houston! If you are not familiar with Peruvian food you need to try the Lomo saltado, the flambé makes it very tasty, the ceviche is a little tangy and super fresh which makes it amazing for a summer day, the service was fast and friendly and the owners are always there, i know they will be moving soon (same shopping plaza) to a bigger place so finding tables will be easier :) . Atmosphere: Peru Cafe Express, clean, cheery , tidy but very tiny restaurant with maybe be 6, 7 tables that can fit max 20 people so don't come with a large group; but I heard they are moving to a bigger location in the same strip. The food: Don't expect complex food but at the same time Peruvian food is a fusion of many cultures, Latin American, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, etc. Beef Lomo Saltado cooked in soy sauce and chicken fried rice are definitely Asian fusion. The Seafood Rice was very good , yellow rice with fresh shrimp, mussel, octopus very similar to a paella. Because of this diversity, there is something for everyone here. Coffee is strong and fresh. The Cafe con Leche and rich caramel Flan I had was typical of Latin American style. Try the Chicha Morada, Peruvian fresh fruit drink made of purple corn maize, pineapple, apple, spices. It is quite sweet, looks and tastes similar to a nonalcoholic sangria. The purple maize does not impart much if any corn flavor, except to give the drink a nice deep red purple color. Don't confuse this fresh fruit Chicha Morada with fermented brew Chicha . ( In some remote regions of Peru and Bolivia, fermented Chicha brew is still made the traditional way by chewing corn kernels to mix them with salivary amylases to break down the starch then spit into a gourd container and allow to ferment ! ) read more

Ají de gallina, papas a la huancaina and ceviche, everything was perfect and homemade. The size of the portions are good enough to share. I'm Peruvian native and can say the food here is awesome. I have eaten the lomo, anticuchos, ceviche, jalea, bisteck a lo pobre, arroz chaufa, arroz de mariscos , tallarines verdes, cau cau, aji de gallina, flan, and one of the best expresso in Houston made by Carlos. Everything was delicious and very clean plated. My husband is native Italian and loved the food but was very pleased with the expresso made like true Napolitano. Most definitely will return especially because the owners take time to visit and make you feel comfortable. read more

The Lomo Saltado was pretty damn good, along with the beef empanadas. The shrimp soup was far too fishy though, I couldn't even eat a second bite. Not sure if it's always like that but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I would, however, recommend the restaurant and I look forward to trying more of their dishes. read more

The flan is the best I have ever had. Better than my aunt Gloria's who would give us her homemade flan as a birthday present. It is a good portion, dense, with lots of syrup. I had flan at many places and they always disappoint, being watery or jiggly, more like a custard. It is $4 which is not too bad but be sure to eat with coffee. read more

Let me start off by saying that I am Peruvian, eat homemade Peruvian food on the regular so perhaps my standards are a lot higher than most. My mom was craving an Inca kola, which you can't find at your local grocery store so we decided to take the drive from Spring to this spot. We ordered the ceviche and shrimp, anticuchos, causa and papa rellena. The anticuchos were not seasoned as they should be, tastes like bland meat cooked over the stove top instead of that smoky rich grilled taste. The choclo was entirely way too sweet, not how it is normally served. The ceviche was about the only decent thing we had. The causa was okay, but lacked the lemony taste in the potato. The worst thing was the papa rellena. I am 4 months pregnant and my senses are at 100. As soon as I stuck my fork in it, I smelled something foul. I had my fiancée try it and then my mom and we all agreed the meat inside had a rotting smell. Upon letting our server know, she offered to bring us another and we said we just didn't want it anymore. I suppose she told the manager or owner, who then came over to our table to what we thought was to apologize only to be told we were wrong. She said it was just made and that she had tried it and it wasn't rotten. First of all, I know damn well you didn't try mine, and if you did then you're nasty. Second of all, whether that was the case or not, you don't go up to your customer and blatantly tell them they're wrong and give them attitude. She stood by the fact that they were fresh. I'm sure they were cooked at the moment but that doesn't mean they were prepped the same day. Papa rellenas aren't something you make by the order, they prep them well in advanced as it takes a bit to assemble them. There's no way 3 different people all agreed that it smelled rotten. The server was very apologetic but the manager/owner was rude and reminded me of how "los Peruanos chusmas sin clase" act. Very disappointing because there are a very limited selection of Peruvian restaurants in Houston but definitely will not be giving them another shot. Che Inka, while pricier, is a better spot any day over this one. read more

Have eaten here many times. Last time my beans were cold so they had to microwave them when caused my steak to get cooked overdone.
