When I fly into a town, usually hungry, I often opt for something cuisine I'm familiar with. Checked out Yelp and decided to give Petra house a try...Jordanian cuisine isn't an option I'm faced with often... more than anything the adventure and unknown lead me here. Very immersive and beautiful decor! Never seen a commitment to showing their culture via decor like this in a very long time. I ordered: nothing I've ever had but looks sort of familiar. 1) Sambousak- reminded me of Samosas in Indian cuisine...a little more crunchy and a hint of a flavor I'm not familiar with...still very good. 2) Mixed Safiha - round bread, topped with something different (meat, cheese, shattah, spinach, and zaatar). The various combinations were good...my only comment was the bread part was very inconsistent..some of the bread was fluffy and soft while others were the chewiness of a bagel or English muffin. I preferred the softer bread, lol 3) katayef - loved the crunchiness of the pie like pastry, the ice cream was good and the sauces rounded out the sweetness...reminding you, yes this is a dessert. I ordered a mango yogurt drink that was smooth and sweet. Overall, I got what I wanted a food adventure of deliciousness. My only comment is the uneven service...I wasn't offered water, I guess they wanted me to ask?! And the person didn't come around very often of course there was no reason. Mostly, the server wasn't very welcoming to me. They did their job well otherwise. I'll come back for the unique cuisine but not the service.

Entering this restaurant is like going to the Middle East. It is nicely decorated, middle eastern music. The place is big with lots of tables and a section where you can sit on the floor taking in the complete experience. We went on a Tuesday evening and since it was a slow night we were able to choose the table we wanted to sit. We chose traditional middle eastern floor seating. We ordered the Baba Ghanoush, the Salmon Kebab Plate, Tabouli Salad and the Jordanian Signature dish Maqluba with chicken. Everything was so delicious!! I can't say which was our favorite. The explosion of flavors in each dish was extraordinary. The Maqluba chicken sauce has a touch of spicy (just in case you can't handle spicy foods). We didn't have space for dessert so we can't tell you about that. They do offer arabic iced and hot teas as well as Turkish Coffee. Definitely a place to keep coming for good food. Feels like they are cooking you in a home. The perfect touch is felt in each dish. Ambiance is perfect for groups or date night. Great service.

i had the most amazing experience here! the place is fully decorated in jordanian style interior. it's very interesting to see how they mix different colors and textures while still maintaining a balanced look. the place feels very homey and comforting. when we first walked in they let us pick between tradition seating and regular seating. i opted for traditional seating since i wanted to get the full experience. while deciding on what to order, i asked the staff what he recommended, and he became very excited. he was so happy to share his culture and explain the dishes to us. we shared the maqluba because it is a dish i have been interested in trying for a very long time. he did a handwash for us before the food came out. he also gave us some complimentary hot tea and even refilled it without us asking for it. his service was truly above and beyond. the maqluba was so delicious. the meat was super tender and fell apart so easily. the flavors were so deep and rich, i can tell they put a lot of care into the process of cooking. the sauce was slightly spicy which only added to the diversity of flavors. i can't put into words how good it was. we also got katayef for dessert, which had a crispy crust and came with vanilla ice cream. that was unlike anything i've had before. the contrast between the warmth of the pastry and the vanilla ice cream made such a good combination. our server even mentioned that he makes the dough himself! our server truly made this experience very special and heartwarming. i'm so happy he was able to share a part of his story with us.

First time here and we love it super good highly recommended very friendly place

My partner and I happened to come across this place a few months ago when he moved into the area- and I'm so glad we did! The food is super delicious. This time around we got the mezza for two which is a shareable platter with a little bit of everything from the appetizer menu. The service is great. They start you off with a rose water handwashing at your table before you look through the menus. The staff is super polite and receptive to questions about dishes. The area we ate at was on the floor in the more traditional seating and it was great! We had the option to close the curtain to make the dining experience more private if we had wanted to. We've been back twice already'! Looking forward to a third time and more. :)

Please change the quality of your desserts. Service was good! Main dishes where good as well, but desserts was so so bad more like they defrosted and added some syrup with dash a pistachio.

We were able to try a wide variety of dishes, and every single one was exceptional. I have dietary restrictions (no onions or garlic), and the kitchen and staff were incredibly accommodating. They prepared separate versions of several dishes for me without hesitation, and I never felt like I was getting a lesser experience. It's rare to find a restaurant that can accommodate food sensitivities so thoughtfully while still delivering incredible flavor. The food was absolutely delicious from start to finish, and the service was impeccable. The staff was warm, attentive, and made our birthday celebration feel special without ever being overbearing. Everyone in our group left talking about how amazing the food was. We couldn't have asked for a better meal or a better overall experience. Mediterranean Exploration Company has definitely earned a spot on our list of favorite Portland restaurants, and we can't wait to come back.

We weren't too hungry and ordered 3 dishes to share - the hamachi crudo, baked feta with Blackberries, and braised Greek greens. The service was pretty fast, we received our food within 15 mins. The hamachi crudo was tasty with fresh fish that balanced well with the yummy smoked eggplant, tamarind soy, black harissa mayo, and crispy ginger. The baked feta was the heartiest dish, it came out with piping hot pitas to dip into the creamy savory/sweet feta and blackberries. The braised Greek greens felt like the most basic dish out of the 3, collard greens cooked with a lemon/olive oil finish, which tasted as described but not exciting enough to order again. Just as the name implies, this restaurant is a nice way to try Mediterranean dishes for those who don't eat it often. Admittedly, the cuisine isn't in our top favorites, but all the dishes were executed well, true to their description, and made for some fun bites.

I love Mediterranean food in general and was looking forward to seeing what this restaurant had offer. On entry the first thing that I noticed is that the room, Reedley, really wanted to be a nightclub! The whole vibe with the floor and the way the lighting looks... And then I looked over and saw a giant DJ production rack behind the bar and additional club lights... Yeah. It's a restaurant by day, and I'm sure that people dance there. Added to the vibe! I just wanna take a moment to acknowledge that the menu is amazingly comprehensive. This is not some random gyro place. There are things here that I frankly never seen anywhere in the Portland Metro area. Can't wait to go back many times and sample all of it. My companion got the gyro platter and I got the lamb lula kabab. They were both accompanied by a couple of sauces/chutney's. that were delicious addition. We closed out the meal sharing a slice of their cake, which was incredibly delicious as well. The meal was excellent, but the prospects of all the things that I didn't eat, haunt me. I will definitely be returning. Highly recommended!

Rice was some of the best we have had. The meats were spiced perfectly. The side salad was really nice take of a Greek salad, a tad bit over dressed but still a ticket to flavor town. The lamb chops had great flavor though I wish they would have been cooked medium rare and then they would have been sensational. The chicken was cooked perfectly, moist and tender. The lamb was the winner of the show for sure. We be back for sure.

I ordered the chicken Gyro and asked for cucumbers. Unfortunately, the chicken was not very tasty. I was hoping for charbroiled chunks of chicken breast, like "I Heart Gyro" does. Instead it was thin strips of seasoned chicken that were probably thawed out from the freezer. The Tzatziki sauce was very good though! Because I asked for extra sauce, it made the Iceberg lettuce soggy, as well as the thin slices of onions. By the time I picked off all the soggy pieces of Iceberg lettuce and thin slices of onions, I was left with just two slices of tomatoes and two slices of cucumber! Definitely not worth paying the extra dollar for two slices of cucumber! I paid almost $15 for this Gyro that lacked crisp veggies and they were stingy with the Feta cheese! Only a few crumbles. I feel very disappointed, because I read wonderful reviews about this place. Too bad, so sad! P.S.: If you want a delicious Chicken Gyro with marinated and grilled chunks of chicken breast, "I Heart Gyro" can't be beat!
