The food at Petra's is never disappointing. Some of best dishes are sour cream chicken enchiladas. Carne asada, chicken asada, and of course their flour tortillas are home made. Service excellent, staff always pleasant and eager to help. The restaurant is clean and organized. We in fact had them cater our granddaughters wedding last week. Fyi if you have kiddos and they only like crispy tacos, be warned because they don't have them on the menu. Visited Petra on a recommendation from my sister, a McKinney local and savvy restaurant diner. On this occasion, a week night, the restaurant was not busy and we were seated directly. The atmosphere was comfortable and casual. Our waiters were young and attentive and friendly in all respects. In fact, we teasingly called them Petra 1 & 2 and they displayed a great sense of humor knowing we were just playing. The food and our margaritas were prepared as expected and were liked by everyone. We've been twice now since on a mission to find a new "go to" spot since our last spot closed. I think we have found it. Both times my wife and I sat at the bar and ordered food and drinks. Our interactions with the bartenders have been great. The food has been really good. I had the Del Mar tonight which was shrimp and scallops in a very tangy and slightly spicy red sauce. It was amazing. The scallops and shrimp were tender and not over done. My wife had the cod tacos and she loved them. Last visit, she had the chile rellenos and I had the chicken enchiladas. Hers was great and mine were good, but could have had a little extra kick. I'm sure it's a favorite for people who don't like too much spice. Cona was the bartender tonight and he is a genuinely good guy. In summary, I would say that we have enjoyed our two visits for the food, the drinks and the fun! We will be back often. read more

I am kicking myself for not trying out Petra's sooner. Everytime we'd drive by we would say we need to check them out but the drive to the parking lot comes and goes so 9/10 we pass it by. We made it a point to get there no matter what. There is something about Petra's that puts itself in it's own category. It is not your standard Tex Mex Restaurant where everything tastes the same and the menu offers the same as any other Tex Mex place. I think the word I'm looking for is homemade flavors. They don't sell the run of the mill taco's. Every one of them is different in it's own way. The sauces & salsas rock. Now that I think of it the items included in the taco's it makes more sense. Homemade. They put pineapple in a lot of their taco's, haven't heard of that and the coleslaw being done. What a relief to finally have found our Mexican? I'm quite bummed... Once the building out process had begun, I was so excited to have a Mexican restaurant rt in my neighborhood. I am a fan of Mexican food and as a Latino, I should know what "legit" looks and tastes like. Well, it has finally opened and unfortunately, I left quite disappointed. The setup inside is very nice. Hostess was on point. The booths are all wood bench style and extremely hard and uncomfortable. Definitely not an invitation to hang out and drink Margaritas for a long while with a group of peeps. Tostada Chips were great. Came with both, a green and red salsa. The red one was so diluted and watery though. It was actually tasteless to be brutally honest. Ew! My grandmother would have marched on into the kitchen if you put that salsa in front of her. So, not a good start already. Ordered a soup, some beef nachos and churros. Tried to try the limonada but was told they were out. I'm not sure if it's made in-house or even freshly made because there were lemons and limes all around. Someone PLEASE try the limonada when they do have it and advise. The soup, nachos and churros were all good. I especially enjoyed the queso blanco on the nachos. The soup was supposed to come with little tortilla strips but didn't. I mentioned this to the server and his response was exactly this - "yeah, yeah". Hmmmmmm, maybe he didn't actually hear me, I don't know that for certain. All in all, food was good but not anything unique or spectacular. Glasses sat at empty once we drank through our teas. Not a single refill and server came by multiple times. Really just an "eh" and "blah" kind of experience when you include the lack of comfort and basics. So, as a big fan and regular of Mexican cuisine, I can't see myself returning to Petra unfortunately. I'll stick to my fav's. It's not a new restaurant, just a new location for a business with a long enough standing. So, I can't say its possibly a patch of the new restaurant blues and will be better once established. This restaurant was more than I expected. When my family suggested we have dinner here my first thought was, oh great, another Mexican restaurant. Upon arrival I noticed that the exterior of the restaurant was appealing and looked nice, as well as the interior. But my deepest impression was when I tasted the food. It was all good. I ordered the three enchilada plate, one each with ground beef, steak, and chicken. All were good and well flavored. However, the chicken was best. Perhaps the best chicken enchilada I've ever had! They were served with delicious lime rice and a cup of pinto beans. The beans were a welcome change from the refried beans that are so common in Mexican restaurants. Gave this place a try for lunch today with our family. The menu is front to back, done well for the most part. The only thing was the descriptions for the plates were different. I ordered a dish that I thought would be skirt steak not cut up, but it was. Just feel there should be a better description of some items The place was very clean and beautifully done, staff was friendly. Our waiter was nice, answered questions, just wished he would've been a tad more attentive and noticed that my fiancé hadn't hardly ate his food. Especially since we were one of two tables in the place and he was only waiting on us. We ordered the Jamaican Hibiscus tea which was fabulous. We also had a half order of the chorizo queso which was also good. They bring out a red salsa and a tomatillo salsa with the chips, we found both to be quite tasty. For entrees I ordered the Beef al guajillo which was great on flavor but the description I thought I was getting skirt steak, not diced up. But it was still tasty, I substituted my beans for the Mexican slaw which was very good. My fiancé ordered the signature chicken guajillo enchiladas. The sauce on them almost tasted burnt. Very roasty chipotle flavor that was somewhat bitter, was not very good. He didn't want to say anything, and the waiter didn't ask. We would come back, I enjoyed my food and the place was nice. Petra is a great restaurant that you should totally check out! The chips and queso are good to start with and the margaritas are so tasty as well! They also have really fresh tortillas. Our favorite entree's are chicken mexicana, creamy tortilla soup, and chicken sour cream enchiladas! We tried the churros and loved them as well. Petra has live music on Tuesdays and it's a really fun atmosphere for a date night or a group gathering. We've consistently had great service here too. read more

I DoorDashed the guajillo chicken tacos and achiote rice and I fell in love. The portion of chicken was generous and well seasoned. You could tell that they carefully marinated this chicken in a perfect blend of spices and citrus. The large cubes were tender and flavorful. The black refried beans and slaw were such a lovely complement to the flavors. I also ordered the achiote rice, which was perfectly moist and fluffy. Often, when ordering any type of rice in a Mexican restaurant, It can be dry and minimally flavored. This was quite the opposite. I will be ordering from here again. We ordered 2 different beef dishes: Mexicana and Guisada. I've eaten both of these many times before since they were at their El Dorado location. The "guisada" wasn't the same--it was the Mexicana with some liquid added. Not sure what happened there. Our queso was plain--no chorizo included. Gave it 2 stars because I did eat the food. Lol but I was not impressed. Ordered through DoorDash. I had the chicken enchiladas with "lime" rice and black refried beans. The sauce on the enchiladas was watery. Rice also had no flavor and was rubbery like that rice that's already cooked and you throw the bag in the microwave. We also got the Monterey burrito, quesadilla and flautas. More of the same. Low quality and no flavor. I did try the Mexican slaw that came with the flautas. It was tasty and the only thing that tasted like maybe it had been made today. They gave us a bag of chips. We all were able to have 5 chips each between the four of us. We tried their Chorizo queso - delicious and creamy, Flautas - different spin on them so more authentic than Tex mex, two taco plate with barbacoa and al pastor - both delicious, and a hibiscus swirl margarita- not too sweet yet strong margarita! We will definitely be coming back! As for social distancing, we were spread out from other tables, so definitely not over crowded at all. Servers and bartenders were very nice. read more

The enchiladas are downright gross, Jack cheese rolled up in tortillas, the beef enchiladas were a bad tasting taco meat wrapped in a tortilla with a brown clear sauce, and the beans have the consistency of soup. Rice is white with no flavor.I'd stick with the tacos if I had to come back. I don't know how places serving this low quality of Mexican food stay open in Texas. The owner should sit down and eat the enchilada plate before they serve people this trash. It's just nasty, and that's being too kind. Place deserves a one star for serving disgusting food for twenty dollars a plate. Baffles me that people eat this bad of a food and are satisfied by the experience. Both super tasty. Great chips. I had fish tacos with cilantro rice and black beans. Uhhhh, it's quite possible I may have them again tomorrow! So good. Way better than Chuy's fish tacos. The fish is fried, but I'm certain you can request grilled. Perfect cilantro creamy slaw, avocados and tortillas. My lunch date had the chicken enchiladas. She loved them.
