The meats at Phil's BBQ are dry rubbed, baked in an oven, slathered with their BBQ sauce, and then mesquite grilled. Beef Ribs ($34.95) - 5 bone - I was surprised at how meaty and flavorful these ribs were. The BBQ sauce is sweet and tangy and tastes wonderful! The meat was soft and tender but not quite fall of the bone like my favorite BBQ sport in the Los Angeles area. Half Chicken ($10.50) - The chicken tasted amazing as well, as it used the same BBQ sauce. Tri-Tip [deli sliced] ($6.45)deli sliced) - Surprisingly this was probably the item I liked the most here. The tri tip was extremely flavorful and juicy. It would be perfect for sandwiches. Overall, I really enjoyed the meats here. The beef ribs are such a great deal and have a wonderful flavor profile. The chicken wings were tender and had the nice bbq flavors. My boyfriend and I shared the baby back rib dinner (4 pieces) with coleslaw & potato salad, 5 piece chicken wings, and the Broham loaded fries. Total order was $46 including tips. Coleslaw and potato salad were pretty saucy to me. Baby back ribs were good, fall off the bone but it was on the sweeter side. Lastly, the loaded fries, I was expecting a bit more. Felt like the fries were hard and a little dry, not sure if they double fried it or if they freshly cooked them but texture wasn't the best of the best. I know that this a staple bbq place but it just missed the mark for me. The overall ambience is what I would expect from a bbq place. Open seating, lots of paper towels, a hand washing station open for everyone to use! But the bbq was a bit over sauced for me. I love this Phil Bbq location. They're always quick with our order and the staffs are always attentive. Every time I come here it's never a disappointment. They also have a little sport bars if you want to eat and enjoy watching your favorite sport. They have a variety of adult beverages, also drinking fountains for the younger kids. It's been years since I've been in San Diego so a trip to Phil's was part of my itinerary when I took my daughter in that area of SoCal. It's unfortunate that the food wasn't as good as how I remembered it to be. Fries had no flavor. The beef ribs and the baby back ribs were not really outstanding. Although I have to say, the beef ribs were fall off the bones, it wasn't something I will be looking forward to try again. Someone brought me some Phil's barbecue the other day. It was the worst barbecue I've ever eaten. The ribs were horrible. They were chard not smoked. I don't think they know what a smokehouse is. My friend got the 5 beefy rib dinner and I got the 2 beefy rib + quarter chicken dinner - each comes with 2 small sides or 1 large side. We got a combination of cole slaw (a little bit too much of mayonnaise for me, but overall refreshing) and french fries (good enough to order again, but not amazing). I have no idea how my friend polished off 4 ribs, since there's so much meat on each bone. What a find! This trip to SD, my sister-in-law's boyfriend steered us to Phil's BBQ and now I am forever in their debt. I had the Rib-less Tickler with two sides and two onion rings. Where do they get onions that size? To begin: Hi my name is Garry and I'm a Ribaholic. Unrepentant Ribaholic. I've had ribs in three Asian countries and 20+ states, including several places in Texas. (sorry Texas, you're #2 now) The ribs at Phil's are, with no reservations, the best I've have ever experienced. Ever. The Rib-less dinner was a PILE of rib meat, and in that pile was one, small, inconsequential piece of fatty meat. The rest of it was just lean, perfectly BBQ'd rib meat. The sauce in which the ribs are first grilled and then coated afterwards is a masterpiece of flavor. Apparently Phil's has always made their own sauce, and the mixer from the original location has a place of honor in the front window bay. The key for good or great ribs though is in both the sauce and The Meat. High quality meat yields a better dinner experience and wherever it is that Phil's gets their meat from is Doing The Right Thing. The Chick-Less dinner my wife had was the same but with boneless chicken and the same sides. Grilled to perfection and a small cup of sauce on the side (her choice) to dip it in. Beyond that though, those are some HYUGE onion rings, and they were the best I've had since I made my own at home with Maui onions. On top of the great food here, the service was outstanding, Arturo the manager made sure we were happy with everything and the waiter did a bang-up job too. I owe my sister-in-law BIGLY for directing us to this place. I get into san Diego once a year or so, and I guarantee I will be back for more. Went to the Rancho Bernardo. Took out of town guests February 24th. My son and I went March 11th. Friends ordered baby back rib dinner and were happy they did.
