Phil's Ice House has been around for many years because of the great burgers. I hadn't been for a good bit but was glad I had another burger there. It got 4 stars because the restaurant got really smoky inside. I don't think they burned any of the burgers just that it has poor ventilation. My mushroom burger was good. I tried the jollyville burger & 78704. Preferred the 78704 because it had more flavor w/ the jalapeños & chipotle mayo. Also I liked the bun. The patty to me just didn't seem that flavorful though. Jollyville Burger $9.29- Bacon, egg, cheddar cheese, and a burger served between two slices of sourdough french toast. Huge, but I expected more flavor from the patty. Tried some of the syrup it came with but figured it had enough calories. Fuddrucker's is still my #1 burger place. "78704" Burger $8.49- The south of the river burger is topped with Monterey Jack cheese, jalapeños, grilled onions, sliced avocado, and chipotle mayo on a toasted jalapeño cheese bun. Preferred this over the jollyville. It had more flavor with the Chipotle mayo & jalapeños. It was only a little spicy. I liked the bun! Highland Hills Chicken Sandwich $9.49- Fried chicken breast tossed in Frank's Hot Sauce then topped with bleu cheese, lettuce and tomato on a toasted sourdough bun. Mom got this, the chicken was huge and thick. She thought it was spicy, but I didn't try it. Tried the onion rings, fried green beans, & the mix of fries /sweet potato fries. I'll be the first to admit I'm not a huge burger person and I'll also say this is the worst burger I've ever gotten at a restaurant. I got the Rosedale with a turkey burger and despite having all these different elements it still managed to be dry and bland. Even though I could taste the barbecue sauce, pickles, onions and meat it all failed to become more than the sum of its parts the way a good burger should. Even the fries were as bad as fries can ever be. I wondered how I could get this whole meal for less than $10 and after having eaten it I now understand. I did finish the whole thing so it's perfectly edible but I'd recommend going somewhere with a better burger. read more

Stopped by here with some family while in Austin for a few hours. We had all the nieces with us so the playground was a huge benefit. Any place that has a playground and serves beer is gonna get 3-stars automatically, don't care if they're serving microwaved pizza bites. But the burgers were good! We got a couple of the zip code burgers and the toppings were solid. My wife appreciated the gluten free bun as well. My highlight was the fried green beans. It's tied to an ice cream shop as well so another big win if you have kids. read more

Came here for the first time the other day with some friends who picked the place for dinner. I was highly impressed. It was not what I thought it was going to be but I was pleasantly surprised. There is a huge array of options for just about everyone. Of course it has an Austin twist on everything, but if you are from around here the names of the burgers are quite great. There were so many good options I wasn't sure which one to choose. I ended up with the Jollyville Burger and it was delicious! Ate the whole thing. I got sweet potato fries, but I should have gotten half and half if I realized that was an option. I will definitely be coming back here! The food was great and I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and best part is it is connected to Amy's Ice Cream! Not only is the sign small, it's on a black board written in blue ink so you can't even see it until you're right up on it. The food is good BUT they messed up my order three times in a row. One of those times, I ordered in person. The ticket said I wanted sauce on the side instead of on the burger (Getting sauce on a to-go burger means you're getting a soggy burger.) Fortunately, I was able to check my order before leaving. They had not given me any sauce at all. Easy fix, but i shouldn't have to check. Two of those times, I ordered through doordash. Phil's on doordash doesn't have options to add things or to get sauces on the side, so you have to write in requests like those. They must not read the notes because they don't fill requests written in the notes. If they don't plan to read those notes, they shouldn't allow customers to add notes. (I think sauces should always be on the side for to-go orders, but that's my personal opinion.) They're always friendly and they refunded my money one time they got my order wrong. They've gotten it wrong more than the three times in a row i mentioned above. I used to go there about once/week because I loved the food, but it's hard to order their takeout when can't trust I'll get what I order. read more

Hooray! After several false starts and delays, the north side Phil's is open for business. The food menu is exactly the same as the other Austin locations (woo-hoo, more Violet Crown sliders for me). The same wonderful playscape (minus the cows) loved by families and the ice cream are there, too. Imagine the best of the Burnet Road location moved up here, but with lots more seating & shade, less noisy traffic and fewer aggressive grackles. If you're new to the area or just don't know, Phil's is a restaurant spin-off concept from Austin's iconic Amy's Ice Creams (est. 1984). It was named for the late Phil Clay, a beloved friend and business partner who passed away suddenly in a motorcycle accident in 2003. The store's slogan, with permission from Robert Earl Keen, is "the road goes on forever ...the party never ends". The Phil's menu is mostly basic burgers with flavorful toppings and a sweet bun, each combination named for an Austin-area neighborhood. You can also get sweet potato fries, veggies burgers, chicken or fish sandwiches, onion rings, and corn dogs. If you can't decide what to order, a nice option is the 3 or 2 mini-burger basket in which you choose from the flavor combos - 78704, Violet Crown, and 78756 are my recurring faves. It's neat to see the flatscreens with a live feed of the indoor skydiving place next door to this Austinville 78750 location. iFly couldn't ask for a better advertisement. Everyone indoors at both Phil's and the adjacent Amy's couldn't help but to watch with fascination during our first visit during opening week. I love that the tree shaded play yard is behind the building, giving a nice buffer to the sounds & sights of busy Research Boulevard out front. Also great is the large windows between the indoor dining space and the backyard, giving parents a complete view of the playscape (essential when all of the outdoor tables are full). Even if you don't have kids, I dare you to watch just a few minutes of the quick yellow tub merry-go-round in action (followed by the inevitable dizzy, nauseous wailing of a small drunk child) and not break into a smile. read more

After eating seafood all week, I craved beef. We hadn't tried Phil's yet so why not. The décor is no frills. Long bench type seating and a counter to order the food. Huge windows to look out onto the Playground. The playground was packed with kids but the dining area was relatively empty. I ordered the 78750 and BF got the Allendale. We each order a different beer on tap. The girl asked our name so to call us when the burgers were ready. BF said Mickey Mouse and the girl giggled. Off to find a seat with a good view of the TV showing the iFly training. I must admit the iFly was totally amusing. When they took a break, I took a gander at the playground people. There was weekend Dad who was either on his cell phone or checking his emails instead of watching his kids. When their food arrive, Dad went to find his kids in the playground all the while still on his cell phone. Ten minutes searching and he found them. Yes, he stayed on the phone the entire time they were eating. Bad daddy, pay attention to your kids. Mom with two small girl children, in 30 minutes she took them to the bathroom 4 times. Yes, I counted. Then over the loud speaker you hear, Mickey Mouse, your order is ready. It was hysterical watching the kids look for Mickey Mouse. My 78750 was delicious. The Swiss cheese was melted perfectly, onion rings were crispy, and plenty of bacon. I will ask next time to only cook it to medium instead of well done. The fries, what can I say, Loved the sweet potato fries, well seasoned. The regular fries were okay. Since BF didn't say a word until his burger was done. I assume he enjoyed it. Headed to the restroom before leaving for home. Be forewarned, there is only one sink. Guess who was at the sink, Mom with 2 girl children. The 5 year old girl was washing (playing) her hands....for 5 minutes while the line behind her grew. Enjoyed the food and beers but next time I will get it to go. read more

Great tasting burgers love that they have turkey patty as an option. The mix of regular fries and sweet potato are very good also.

Have visited Phil's Icehouse twice now and wonder to myself why I don't find myself there more often! They do a great job on their burgers and because I always want to try more than one, but trying to limit my meals of gluttony! Fortunately for me they offer a meal of 3 smaller "slider" type mini-burgers. Each one is terrific! I believe I had this same selection during my first visit: Rosedale (cheddar mesquite burger, onions, pickles, cheddar cheese, & BBQ sauce), Violet Crown (bleu cheese burger topped with bleu cheese & grilled onions) and Crestview (chili cheeseburger topped with chili, cheddar cheese, sliced onions-no mustard)! Yummm! Each one is so delicious, I think as I tried each of them, I bet this would be excellent as a full-size burger! However, how can I do that? I guess it warrants 3 separate trips to try all three! Also, had the mixed fries with standard and sweet potaoes. Ok...we've been here several times now and the attraction is that when our family gets together there is a cool playground and outside seating so that all of the adults can chat and look out for the kids as they play. Beyond that...honestly it's an only ok burger that's way too expensive for what it is. There are a lot of better burgers out there for much less. Though...the fries are delicious. Looking for a great place to get together with a group that has kids? Great place to choose. Looking for a delicious burger...maybe look somewhere else. read more

One of the things I e always appreciated about you all is the patty-bun ratio. AND it tasted like charcoal. I did not order this "well done" it was slightly larger than my daughters mini burgers. Adding insult to injury, I waited 30 minutes to receive my order. I've ran restaurants in the past and while I understand being understaffed, close the doors if your current staff is incapable of creating an acceptable product. Their bathrooms are not well maintained. One stall was completely missing a lock, while the other stall had poop in it. The paper towel dispenser was broken. Service wasn't particularly fast either. I do appreciate that they carry gluten free buns though. Christian, the manager, messaged me and is ordering the missing lock for the bathroom stall and a new paper towel dispenser! The other manager, Matthew, mailed me a $25 gift card! Thank you for promptly taking care of the women's bathroom! I look forward to returning and am thankful they are one of the few restaurants who carry gluten free burgers. read more

My wife and I stopped by for dinner and we were impressed. We did wait about 15-20 minutes but it seemed to be normal dinner time traffic. It was well worth the wait, both of our sandwiches were fresh and the bread the buns were made of was yummy. The prices are very comparable to fast food but the quality is well above. Sadly, I have to give a bad review. Burgers and fries are consistently good. Service and cleanliness, consistently bad. Employees seem bothered to be working. Not interested in refilling tea machine or replacing soda on the machine. Annoyed when you ask a question. Everything is sticky: tables, seats, ketchup dispenser, floor. The dealbreaker today was watching an employee begrudgingly wipe up a spill on the floor with a towel using his/her foot then use the same towel to wipe down the drink machine area. Our last experience was rough - we were prepared to not go back. But the manager reached out to us, and his reply was extremely genuine, and he asked us to give them another shot, on them. We've been sitting on a gift card for about a month or so, since the weather's been so weird... and today, we decided to give Phil's another try. So did half of Austin, it seems like! The place was crazy busy with parents and kids everywhere. But the staff was calm, helpful, and polite. We tried different menu items we hadn't had before, and gave the kids time to run out some energy. This was the experience we wanted and we'd had in the past! Their buns are the sweet bun like the tiny Hawaiian buns. So if you don't like that hint of sweetness then order their gluten free bun. They over so many great varieties of burgers, gluten free options and veggie options. Their foot long hotdog looked great. They are the only place I know of thus far to slow you to order mixed fries. That is mixed French fries with sweet potato fries thus you do not have to choose. You can have both. The fried green beans were delicious. The chipotle mayo was spicy, be ware, but very flavorful. It's a good burger but not great. It suffers from what I call "Moonies" syndrome. A condition where a burger maker confuses the importance of the bread with the beef. The bread is a critical supporting cast member of the burger assembly but it should never overshadow the beef which is, after all, the star of the show. Isn't it? There are many bun options which is great but all of them are so damn large in proportion to the patty which diminishes the correct patty to bun ratio that a true burger enthusiast demands. It's practically a large ground beef kolache! The mixed potato and sweet potato fries is nice touch that differentiates Phil's from the typical burger joint offerings. Beverages include Main Root beverages in lieu of conventional soft drinks. No thanks. Shakes and floats are ok. They also offer a small selection of local beers on draft and in the bottle/can. Phil's partnership with Amy's (all locations I've been seem to have Amy's as a suite-mate) makes for a great one stop shop for a meal and frozen dessert. The two locations I've visited also include an outdoor playscape which give busy parents an opportunity to taste and digest their meal while their kids get to act like kids as opposed to restless hostages of the restaurant. We frequently hold functions like post game celebrations and trophy distribution ceremonies with our daughters' soccer teams here as the large bench style tables are conducive to hosting such events. Be advised that parking can be a pain at this location. Phil's has a lot to offer to make up for the shortcomings of their main attraction. If they could just fix the overgrown buns situation they would really be onto something. read more

If I did have a Icehouse, it would be a lot different. When I was here this place was so damned smokey from the grill and it wreaked of old grease. Do something with the ventilation folks. The smoke was so thick you could see it just hanging in the air. Very unpleasant and made my eyes burn. I ordered a cheeseburger with all the veggies and mustard. I wasn't able to get a full slice of onion, just rings. "Give me extra" I said. They did. The burger came with a mix of regular fries and sweet potato fries. They both sucked. They were limp and cold. I'm not a fry person anyway, but, I do enjoy a nice hot and crispy one. These fell way short. As for the burger? I thought I was at moonies. Just like a couple other yelpers pointed out, the bun is overkill. More focus needs to be given to what's in between the buns. For me the bun is just the part that seals the deal. I don't want it to be overwhelming, and it is here. The patty itself was ok. And they use iceburg lettuce for that nice chilled crisp. The burger has potential but the bread kills it. I'm writing this mostly to thank Phil's for offering a vegan burger option and to encourage other vegans to ask about it. I don't know if it's on the menu but they have it and I build my own burger with avocado, sautéed unions, mushrooms and mustard. You can also do it in the tiny slider format. I'm hoping there will be a more dedicated vegan burger in the future, perhaps with non dairy cheese and other condiments but I am quite happy with the burger as it was made for me last time. The staff understood what I wanted and double checked everything for me. The fries are above average. It's a fun place to go. Well I decided to give Phil's another chance and the food was so much better this time! My first experience I might of caught them on an off night but don't let that detour you this place has great burgers and the onion rings were bomb! I got the Travis heights which came with onions, mushrooms and Swiss cheese, it was fresh and my meat was actually cooked properly this time. Management is very friendly and the staff tried to be as attentive to the dining area as could be but they did get busy for dinner on this Thursday night. All in all I am glad I came back and I enjoyed myself especially since after your dinner your just a hop skip away from some delicious ice cream from Amy's next door :) read more

Updating: Great food, awesome sugar came soda. The line times can still be improved. Normal wait is 15 minutes which is probably a bit too long IMO. Place is ways clean. Management did reach out to me because of my original review about the wait times. That shows that management does care. Original: We left. I was hungry and got tired of waiting. Waited in a line that never moved. 20 people were in front of us. 20 minutes later were still 12 people waiting to place their order. This place is so good! I'm a little mad at myself for not trying it earlier. The burgers all having local names is such a nice touch. At first I was unsure which burger to get because they all looked so good, and then my eyes went to the Jollyville Burger. The description sounded interesting, and I live there so why not try that one? Holy crap it is SO GOOD. I get mine without egg, but otherwise order as-is. The French toast bread works. I don't know how, but it does. And the bacon is perfect, super crispy and not too thinly-sliced. You can tell this isn't the kind of bacon you throw in the microwave. The French toast is so, so good. Like, I would eat an order of their French toast. The burger itself is perfectly seasoned and cooked. It's never dry or bland, nor is it creepily raw or overseasoned. I like my burgers with a little pink to them and that's exactly what they do. Their fries are amazing, too. I get the regular fries and they're addictive. They're seasoned just right and nice and crispy. I love fries and I rarely meet a fry I don't like, but anyone I've brought here agrees there's something about their fries, these are special. The prices are amazing, too. Especially for Austin, you'd expect to pay maybe like $15 per burger or something. Nope! The burgers are reasonably priced at just a smidge more than fast food, they're all like $8-9 and include the fries. They also have Maine Root beverages which I'll be honest, their cola is better than Coke or Pepsi. read more

Ordered just now from here and my delivery person said they messed up my order when they arrived at the restaurant so it had to be remade. The onions on my burger were burned, the fries were hard and very cold upon arrival and they forgot my soda that I was charged for. I ordered the mini burger sampler and some onion rings. The onion rings were all in one mass so not sure if you can really call them rings at this point, see the photo for reference. The crest view burger was pretty awful as the chili meat resembled taco "meat" from Taco Bell and just didn't taste very good, pretty bland to be completely honest. The rose dale burger was ok but the bbq sauce was too overpowering compared to the other ingredients. I really had been scoping this place out for a while and wanted to enjoy a meal from there but this definitely missed the mark. I may give this a shot by going in person but it's gonna be tough as I'd hate to have a repeat experience dining in. read more
