Here's my thought: 1)Service - very good. The barista explained to me patiently what each type of coffee is. This earns it 1 star. 2)Taste (coffee) - I was disappointed that the coffee was sour. Why would coffee be sour? I've tasted many types of coffee. They shouldn't be sour nor bitter. So lots of improvement needed here. Out of the 2 cups and between me and my husband, we only drank 1/4 of a cup & tossed the rest. 3) Taste (matcha mango): pretty good. I finished it fast. Oh well. We dropped by one morning to grab Vietnamese coffee before a long day. They were kind to use our stainless steel cup. (Thanks to the guy who filled it full ) The coffee was bold and strong, just the way I like it. A friend recommended the matcha so I'll have to go back to try that and some of their other drinks. Great Vietnamese coffee shop. My husband and I ordered the Vietnamese black coffee and the banana foam coffee. The beans have a smokey taste, rather than the normal vanilla taste that I often find with Vietnamese coffees, which was a nice change. The beans are also very smooth, requiring very little sweetness. The banana foam was delicious, but a little too sweet for me. I'd liken the sweetness to the same level as Better Buzz, which I think most people will like. The ambience is lovely, with lots of comfortable seats and tables. Located on Convoy, Phinology had been on my bookmarks for the past few months! I've been meaning to try it out when I stop by San Diego to visit family. Parking is a bit hard, especially during lunch and dinner hours. Be careful of drivers in parking lot! We walked inside and were immediately impressed by their gigantic Phins. I have never seen such a big Phin before - it was dripping some drip coffee and doing its magic. The interior is very clean and there were many tables and chairs for coffee patrons. They were taking orders with the kiosk and with a cashier. She quickly took our orders and was very kind and patient. We had ordered a Biscoff foam coffee and a regular house coffee. The biscoff foam coffee was delicious! I will say their Vietnamese coffee isn't strong, but you can taste the authenticity. The biscoff was sprinkled on top and it doesn't take away from the true beauty of the coffee. Their house coffee, in my opinion, was better than my biscoff foam coffee. It was strong and aromatic, but not overwhelming. The caffeine still packs a punch. Although it was good, I would probably still choose a different coffee shop for Vietnamese coffee. Phinology is one of the newer coffee shops in San Diego and I was really excited to try it! They are a sister shop of Yun Tea next door and that place is my go to as well. We got the Ube Vietnamese Coffee and the Biscoff Matcha. The Ube Viet was really good and the coffee flavor was strong! As for the Biscoff Matcha, initially I got less sweet as I always do but it tasted more like 0% sweet. I ended up having to ask them to add sweetener and it tasted much better after that. Would recommend sticking to regular sweet here! I did also get less ice and I wish they had an option for no ice +$0.80 or something like that to keep the matcha full. I saw someone get a no ice matcha latte and it was more like 50% full without ice. The vibes are really cute and there are a lot of study/work spaces for people with outlets as well. Was very sad to see Chakaa go but I couldn't even recognize the establishment from the inside once it transformed into Phinology. The upscale furniture and countertop stood out to me and felt like luxury. I could definitely see myself doing some work here and being productive! Theres a kiosk to place an order but you are still greeted by the staff. Most people, including me, ordered from the tablet. I got the matcha Einspanner. It was quite heavy that I drank so much cream in order to get to the matcha part. I think the consistency was more stiff and heavy as opposed to more silkier and fluffy. I would order something less dense next time, but the drink was still primarily matcha tea flavored. I stayed for a bit to enjoy some reading as the music was not loud at the time and it was very relaxing! Hopefully their coffee is more their strong suit but the matcha isn't a bad choice. Got the mango matcha and it automatically comes with oat milk ! The matcha flavor was light, drink was creamy, and mango flavor was sweet. I think both the mango and matcha could be stronger tho. First of all, I'm pretty sure my drink was ready in .2 seconds from the time I placed my order on the kiosk. While this likely means that they've premake the different parts of their drinks, I have to say, this was one of the better matcha lattes I've had! Matcha tasted high quality and even with a cream top, was pronounced and not at all overpowered by the milk or flavoring. This spot replaced Chakaa. I went during soft opening, and they were doing a 20% discount. I had pretty high expectations for the matcha coming in because people on tiktok were saying they use paru matcha. I'm not sure if it's because I went during soft opening, but my double matcha tasted really milky :( The faint matcha flavor also tasted a little grainy. The cream top also wasn't that strong in matcha flavor at all. I did get 0% sugar, but not sure if that's the reason. I heard it got better though, so I am looking forward to trying it again! This was our first time trying Phinology Coffee, and it ended up being one of the best coffee stops from our San Diego visit. We found it through Yelp while looking for coffee and decided to take a chance based on the great reviews. We ordered the Banana Foam Coffee and Biscoff Foam Coffee, and both were excellent. The coffee was bold and strong but still smooth, creamy, and perfectly sweet. My daughter enjoyed hers so much she finished it almost immediately. The Banana Foam Coffee was especially good. The banana flavor was balanced and noticeable without tasting artificial or overpowering. I've tried banana coffee at other places, and this one is definitely one of the better versions. I also liked that you can choose between house coffee and Vietnamese coffee. My daughter and I went with the house coffee, while my husband chose the Vietnamese coffee for a stronger, bolder flavor. Both options worked really well with the foam drinks. Service was fast and friendly. The shop is cute but small, and it was very busy when we visited. Every seat was taken, and it can get loud with people constantly coming and going, so we took our drinks to go. They're located in a plaza with plenty of parking, although finding a spot may be harder during peak hours because there are several other popular restaurants nearby. Ube was pretty mild but the drink overall was very smooth and delicious. They have two different viet coffee bases and she was nice enough to let me try both before committing. one is milkier and sweeter and the other is more coffee forward. After having lunch next door, I was surprised to see the line extend outside the entrance for Phinology Coffee. I guess the demand for a Vietnamese coffee shop in the Convoy District was high as these businesses have been popping up in other neighborhoods around the city. Phinology Coffee replaced a boba tea shop that closed because it unfortunately went head-to-head with a newer adjacent neighbor in an internal corner suite of the Convoy Village Shopping Center. The interior was refurbished with modern wood tones. All of the dozen or so tables were completely occupied. A self-service tablet to place an order was stationed near the entrance which was why the queue went outside the doorway. Nine types of phin drip coffee and seven kinds of matcha drinks made up the menu offerings. Screens showing their serving size and respective prices were hanging behind the service counter. The Mango Matcha was sold out so I picked a different matcha flavor, Banana Cloud. Stone ground PARU matcha was used and whisked with oat milk to make the various blends. Most places offer a choice of milk, but no substitutions were allowed here. They also indicated that less ice would mean less liquid in the cup to maintain the recipe integrity. My 16 oz serving with a banana flavored foam cost eight dollars. The matcha flavor was prominent as expected for such a premium source. For the high volume of orders, the staff did an efficient job of making drinks without too long of a wait. read more

They have many single/ double seating options and clean bathrooms! The drinks were very tasty! Wish it had more of a biacoff flavor & the cookie crumble was a nice topping. I originally came for their matcha drinks but saw that there was a Banana Foam Coffee and had to get it! You can choose either the house or Viet Coffee and I went with the latter for a stronger and sweeter drink. I have a pretty low caffeine tolerance so by the time I finished a third of it, I was wired! I couldn't really mix the foam (it's thick) into the drink so I didn't get that much of a banana flavor but as a Viet Coffee, it's pretty good. I came early to also study a bit and was able to snag a table. There are a lot of tables and outlets along the wall and cushioned seats. By 10AM Saturday, the line was already out of the door but most people left once they got their drinks. I didn't really notice anyone prowling for a table the entire time so I don't think this place is really known to be a study or hangout spot. There's free WiFi but it's limited to two hours to match the complimentary 2 hour parking in the lot. One thing I didn't like about Phinology as a study spot was the lighting. It seemed pretty dim and that's even with the natural light coming through the windows. Will definitely be back to try their matcha drinks. For their grand opening, all of the drinks are 20% off and I'm not sure how long that'll last so hurry! read more

Ironically I just had their matcha though.. maybe it's better to get the Viet coffee. The matcha was ok. I actually tried the matcha latte from Labora (same exact: less ice, no sugar, oat milk), and the one at Labora tasted better. The banana foam here didn't have much of a banana flavor. If you use really ripe bananas, the foam should taste good, but this one just wasn't right. I did get 20% off for their soft opening though. Sorry, Phinology! Was greeted upon walking in (12p) and the lady at the counter took our order right away, no line. She was so friendly and helpful and even asked my husband if he wanted to sample any of the drinks. Phinology is one of my new favorite spots in San Diego! I got the Vietnamese iced coffee with banana foam and it was SO good. I'm always on the hunt for the best banana coffees and this one totally surpassed my expectations. It's on the sweeter side but the banana flavor tastes completely natural, not artificial at all, and the Vietnamese coffee itself is seriously strong and delicious. Such a great combo. The inside of the cafe is elegant but also really relaxed and cozy. Perfect spot to set up and work remotely for a few hours. Mobile ordering inside was super easy and my order was ready so fast. Dragged my friend to Phinology a couple times to try their drinks to try most of the matcha menu. our cashier/barista, Trung, was super knowledgeable and helpful explaining and recommending drinks as it was our first time there. If you're looking for a super matcha forward drink with slight sweetness I would recommend the Coco H2O Matcha. The coconut water gave it the slightly refreshing edge to the drink which was nice. I also enjoyed the matcha Einspanner as it had a solid cream top. Unfortunately they only do Oatmilk alternative for all of their drinks, which is a bummer for individuals who can't have Oatmilk all the time/at all but still want to try their matcha lattes, but I would love to see them offer other milk alternatives in the future. read more
