Really enjoyed Phinology Coffee! The shop has a clean, modern atmosphere, the staff was friendly and welcoming, and my iced coffee was excellent. You can tell they put a lot of care into both the drinks and the overall experience. Definitely a great local coffee spot in the Convoy area. I love supporting businesses like this and will absolutely be back to try more of the menu. Highly recommend!

Located on Convoy, Phinology had been on my bookmarks for the past few months! I've been meaning to try it out when I stop by San Diego to visit family. Parking is a bit hard, especially during lunch and dinner hours. Be careful of drivers in parking lot! We walked inside and were immediately impressed by their gigantic Phins. I have never seen such a big Phin before - it was dripping some drip coffee and doing its magic. The interior is very clean and there were many tables and chairs for coffee patrons. They were taking orders with the kiosk and with a cashier. She quickly took our orders and was very kind and patient. We had ordered a Biscoff foam coffee and a regular house coffee. The biscoff foam coffee was delicious! I will say their Vietnamese coffee isn't strong, but you can taste the authenticity. The biscoff was sprinkled on top and it doesn't take away from the true beauty of the coffee. Their house coffee, in my opinion, was better than my biscoff foam coffee. It was strong and aromatic, but not overwhelming. The caffeine still packs a punch. Although it was good, I would probably still choose a different coffee shop for Vietnamese coffee. It wasn't quite strong enough for me here. I'd recommend it to others to try because it is still a place everyone should experience!

Oh this is now apart of my matcha rotation. Their mango matcha is the best mango matcha I've tried and I thought I had already found it! The way they use just fresh mango to bring the flavor through, but it's so well balanced with the deep creamy matcha... This is refreshing, not too sweet, my summer dream. Double matcha wow.. no notes.. I got this to try and I loved it. Strong in the best way. top notch matcha!

Nicely decorated cafe with lots of indoor seating. The cafe was pretty quiet for a great place to get things done. The two drinks I got were Einspanner Vietnamese Coffee and the Strawberry Shortcake Matcha! Both were super delicious! Love the coffee and the matcha taste in both drinks. The strawberry shortcake matcha was sweet, but that was expected. There were so drinks I wanted to try! Can't wait to go back to try out other ones. Service was great and quick! Highly recommend this place!

Phinology is one of the newer coffee shops in San Diego and I was really excited to try it! They are a sister shop of Yun Tea next door and that place is my go to as well. We got the Ube Vietnamese Coffee and the Biscoff Matcha. The Ube Viet was really good and the coffee flavor was strong! As for the Biscoff Matcha, initially I got less sweet as I always do but it tasted more like 0% sweet. I ended up having to ask them to add sweetener and it tasted much better after that. Would recommend sticking to regular sweet here! I did also get less ice and I wish they had an option for no ice +$0.80 or something like that to keep the matcha full. I saw someone get a no ice matcha latte and it was more like 50% full without ice. The vibes are really cute and there are a lot of study/work spaces for people with outlets as well. Service was great. I would come back again!

Updated** Best matcha in San Diego! I like my matcha unsweetened, and I've tried almost all of their drinks. You really can't go wrong here. My top three are the Double Matcha, Einspänner Matcha, and Coconut Matcha. The Coconut Matcha has a more intense matcha flavor, which I really like.

I loved the Phinology coffee. It was perfectly sweet and it was my first time trying a cold foam topping on top of Vietnamese coffee. Most places do a cream top but I love how the foam tops at phinology have density so they don't just disappear into the drink and are lighter because it's not a chunk of heavy cream. One of my favorites viet coffees in SD. Great study spot as well only issue that wifi can be spotty or maybe it was spotty the day I went

Cute and clean coffee shop. We order form egg coffee and it was good. Enough coffee favor and sweetness. Their service is very fast. We used the self service and we received our coffee within 5 mins.

Was very sad to see Chakaa go but I couldn't even recognize the establishment from the inside once it transformed into Phinology. The upscale furniture and countertop stood out to me and felt like luxury. I could definitely see myself doing some work here and being productive! Theres a kiosk to place an order but you are still greeted by the staff. Most people, including me, ordered from the tablet. I got the matcha Einspanner. It was quite heavy that I drank so much cream in order to get to the matcha part. I think the consistency was more stiff and heavy as opposed to more silkier and fluffy. I would order something less dense next time, but the drink was still primarily matcha tea flavored. I stayed for a bit to enjoy some reading as the music was not loud at the time and it was very relaxing! Hopefully their coffee is more their strong suit but the matcha isn't a bad choice. I'd probably go with another flavor next time!

Got the mango matcha and it automatically comes with oat milk ! The matcha flavor was light, drink was creamy, and mango flavor was sweet. I think both the mango and matcha could be stronger tho. Came on a thurs at 5:30pm and it wasn't busy and staff were friendly. Looking forward to trying this place again

First of all, I'm pretty sure my drink was ready in .2 seconds from the time I placed my order on the kiosk. While this likely means that they've premake the different parts of their drinks, I have to say, this was one of the better matcha lattes I've had! Matcha tasted high quality and even with a cream top, was pronounced and not at all overpowered by the milk or flavoring. I got it with the ube top but they had a bunch of different options to choose from. Very impressive and delicious!

Me and my HUBBY came here right after eating at Mikiya which was right across the street from Phinology Coffee!! We were greeted right away by a very nice young man named Trung... BANANA MATCHA: 8/10 The matcha was strong and I really entire it but the banana cream had very little banana flavor in it... UBE COFFEE: 9/10 The coffee was rich and creamy. The Ube cream was very creamy too. So everything was SUPER CREAMY!!! AMBIANCE: New, Modern and Chic interior. I saw ladies chatting with friends and some students were studying there as well. It was a FULL HOUSE on a weekend... I definitely want to come back and try more drinks here!!!! KEEP ROCKN PHINOLOGY COFFEE!!!!!

This spot replaced Chakaa. I went during soft opening, and they were doing a 20% discount. I had pretty high expectations for the matcha coming in because people on tiktok were saying they use paru matcha. I'm not sure if it's because I went during soft opening, but my double matcha tasted really milky :( The faint matcha flavor also tasted a little grainy. The cream top also wasn't that strong in matcha flavor at all. I did get 0% sugar, but not sure if that's the reason. I heard it got better though, so I am looking forward to trying it again! I also want to try their vietnamese coffee. Space inside is nice and they have tables to study/wfh or just chit chat :)

Once inside, we stood there for about 15 minutes, and not one employee acknowledged us or asked if we were waiting to be seated. There appeared to be no hostess managing the front or any clear process for letting someone know that your number had been called. Eventually, I told my husband to flag down a waiter just to find out what was going on and how we were supposed to alert someone that we were there. When he finally spoke with an employee, we were told that our number had been called and that after five minutes they considered us a "no-show." That explanation made absolutely no sense because we had been standing inside the restaurant for at least 15 minutes, and during that entire time, we never heard anyone call a number or a name for ANYONE. To claim we were a no-show when we were physically standing there waiting to be acknowledged was extremely frustrating. Unfortunately, things didn't improve much from there. I'm from Dallas, Texas, where we have plenty of great Vietnamese restaurants, so I know what good pho and Vietnamese food should taste like. Unfortunately, this experience fell short. I ordered the chicken pho, and my husband ordered the bbq pork vermicelli. For appetizers, we ordered the egg rolls and the pork paste spring rolls. I did enjoy the pork paste spring rolls, but the egg rolls were very greasy and tasted like they had been re-fried. My chicken pho was also disappointing. The noodles were cut in half and were so mushy that they practically disintegrated in the broth. The service was also lacking, and the staff did not come across as particularly friendly or welcoming. While the pork paste spring rolls was a bright spot, the overall quality of the food and service left a lot to be desired. Don't believe the hype.

Today, it's one of the most well-known Vietnamese restaurants in the city, and after this visit, I can definitely see why. One of my favorite things about coming here is the location. Even though it's right in Convoy, parking has never been an issue for me. I usually avoid the area because finding a spot can be a headache, but Phuong Trang has a large parking lot that makes stopping by so much easier. I came in for a quick takeout lunch. One thing to know before you go is they don't accept Apple Pay, so make sure to bring a physical card or cash. The staff was incredibly welcoming. They greeted me when I walked in, gave me plenty of time to look over the menu, and never made me feel rushed. That kind of hospitality really stood out. I ordered the Char-Grilled Beef Vermicelli and the Shrimp, Pork & Jellyfish Salad. The salad comes with shredded green papaya, celery, cucumber, carrots, shrimp, pork, jellyfish strips, fresh mint, crushed peanuts, and shrimp chips. The salad was refreshing with plenty of shrimp and jellyfish throughout. I especially liked the crunch from the green papaya. My only complaint was that the dressing felt a little one dimensional. I wish it had a little more brightness to bring out the fresh herbs and vegetables. It was still enjoyable, though. The Char-Grilled Beef Vermicelli was my favorite of the two. It came with vermicelli noodles, fresh herbs, pickled daikon and carrots, crushed peanuts, plus five grilled beef rolls wrapped around scallions. The beef had a delicious smoky flavor from the grill. The only downside was that the inside of the rolls was a little chewy since it didn't get the same char as the outside. Even so, every bite was packed with flavor, so it wasn't enough to take away from the dish. Between the friendly service, quick turnaround for takeout, and solid food, I can see why Phuong Trang has stayed so popular for all these years. I'd happily come back and keep working my way through their menu.

The only thing I would say is worth getting at this restaurant is the baguette with butter (no add-ons, caviar or whatever they have going on at the time -- its just not worth it -- when I got the black truffle on my butter the shavings were so thin they might as well have not been there since it made no difference in flavor) The tamarind wings are one dimensional -- the wings are fried well, but lack in flavor, its straight *overwhelming* tamarind with no other notes. Ive gotten this both times i've been here. Both times its been overly salty. I understand its dry-aged, but the saltiness overtakes any other flavor of the duck. The sauces try to make up for the lack of flavor but they just cant carry the entire dish on their own -- especially not for a $100 price tag. The first time I ordered this dish (Jan 2026) the duck came out cold-warm, and the second time I came here (July 2026) it came out warmer.
