Pho ha long is my favorite pho spots in all of San Antonio. Everything I've ever had has been delicious. Their hot oil is the best I've ever had. I probably use way too much, but it's so darn good. I usually order a #8 with egg noodles, but last night I just wanted their fried rice and ordered some broth on the side. Quality of the food really has gone down sadly, I believe they've got new management which caused this. Just 1 year ago they use to give you good size portions of your food, now it's a gamble. I ordered the bun bo hue and an order of the fried spring rolls and didn't have any food regret. The bun bo hue is a hearty beef soup with thin udon-like noodles. I wanted the full package and got the pig's feet and the congealed pig's blood but i'm sure you can omit those items if you wanted. At first glance, I thought it was going to really salty, but I ended up adding some hot sauce and lime juice to make the broth really stand out. Quite a bit of a drive from the tourist area. There was no real Vietnamese food in the downtown area so we were willing to drive out for breakfast. But when we arrived I wish the food was a bit better as the reviews were very good. I mentioned to my wife and maybe perhaps I'm profiling demographics but if you're serving authentic food in a n area that doesn't have your cuisine, you might be rated very high due to the type of traffic that comes through. We ordered pho, rice with sliced beef and a mango shake with boba. Pretty simple dishes and really hard to mess up if this is your area of expertise. The pho was so so, not a whole lot of toppings and the rice was just not even trying to be good. I don't know what that marinade was but it was just sautéed beef with maybe soy sauce on it with some greens on the side. Half ass job to my standards, they didn't even have piled scallions on the rice. Anyways I'm not going to bash them too much on this if someone enjoys their food. I am deeply saddened to write this review for pho ha long. Everything was just awful. Spoiled cabbage, spoiled chicken, the pho is so off, chunks of salt, a dramatic increase in price, why is Vietnamese coffee $5.50? Staff that don't speak English very well so it was really hard to order a lot. Fabulosa sprayed on the table next to you and the strong smell creeping to you. The spilled over iced Vietnamese coffee was the worst things I've tasted and filled with coffee grounds. It was a gross mess. Isn't Vietnamese coffee supposed to be hot too? A totally sad day and I know the owners are definitely new. read more

Great place to satisfy your pho cravings! This place seems like a family business. Everyone was so friendly, from our server to the older gentlemen cashier. We walked in and were greeted right away. We had free pickings of the table seatings and was offered water right away. Service is friendly and quick. We ordered Spring Rolls to start and they were very fresh. I like the peanut dipping sauce too. (You can tell at some other places if they've been sitting as the rice paper wrap would harden). For my main, I had the pho with everything and it was delicious. Not too salty, not to sweet. The portion was very generous, especially the amount of meat they give you. My fiancé got a dish with egg noodles topped with gravy and veggies with shrimp. It was very different and yummy. The restaurant itself is simple and a bit dated. The restroom could use a bit of an upkeep. This place isn't intended for fancy date night but amazing for classic Vietnamese dishes and authentic taste. I'll be back. And next time I'll have to try out their taro boba! read more

Wow I could have sworn I wrote a review for this gem. This is actually the ONLY pho place I will vouch for in SA. The broth is the best in town and they are just a small family business. Fast friendly service. Delicious pho!! The only thing I would not recommend getting is their Thai tea or smoothies. I've tried them twice before and every time the Thai tea tasted watered down and the boba in the smoothies were hard. Haven't been to this pho spot in a long time and a lot has changed since my last visit. The prices have gone up a few dollars since my last visit so expect around minimum $9 for a bowl of pho. I like how their broth isn't too beefy or salty and is slightly sweet. The service is typically prompt with food being delivered quickly. Granted I do only order PHO since the place is called Pho Ha Long. I love the anime artwork in the restaurant. It isn't the most fanciest place but it is good. This place is definitely not owned by the same family as before. I first started coming here 11 years ago, but todays visit was very unusual. The menus don't look the same, the art work is gone, the family photos behind the cash register are gone, and instead what you can see is a restaurant inspection notice of 82/100 and a bottle of pepto in the fridge? The pho didn't taste like the rich bone broth from before but more like it came from a flavored powder and water. The grilled chicken for kids was not grilled at all--it was pan sautéed and flavorless, and the accompanying rice was hard and dry. I accidentally ordered spring rolls w that "grilled" chicken and it was pretty bad too. I couldn't finish the soup or any of the other items. Go to PhoSure instead if you're looking for a family owned, hole in the wall kinda place. read more

I took my son and his gf to grab lunch, he is got a boba coffee drink and egg rolls, and he is crunching on what he thinks is boba, until he get a real hard piece and spit it's out, it was a baby roach frozen in a chunk of ice. He says loud wtf and they hear us and quickly come and take the drink and walk to the counter, we follow them and we didn't even get to snap a picture, so we tell them we aren't paying for any of the boba but we can pay for the egg rolls, and they get mad at us and tell us to leave. I am a pho obsessed human being. I don't think I'm a snob normally, but I will admit to being a self-proclaimed pho snob. Pho has many important components, but the two most important are the meat and the broth. And the broth always wins out for me. I've been going to Pho Ha Long for the past 4 years, and it has hands down the best broth in San Antonio pho history. They have separate broths for the different meats. The chicken pho (pho ga) has a DELICIOUS broth. The beef pho is savory and rich. The bun bo hue is LEGITIMATELY SO GOOD, with a very heated broth and well-developed flavors. To top it all off, the prices are all very reasonable. The medium pho is $7.50, but why would you go for that when you can get so much more broth for a large pho for $8.50?! What makes me love this place even more is the wonderful staff. This place is homey, and it helps that their service is fast and hospitable. The main waiter and waitress recognize me when I come in, and they have always been warm and kind. They also have the most adorable baby son who is growing up fast and who you will sometimes see in the restaurant. Just remember that this place isn't open on Mondays, which I respect (everyone needs time and space to rest). Otherwise all other days of the week are fair game to get the best pho in San Antonio in your belly! San Antonio is truly a better place bc of Pho Ha Long. read more

I have been there three days in the last 5 days and I missed a day because they are closed on Mondays. The broth is rich and flavorful. The meat is thin and tasty. I get the number 1 or number 5. After reading reviews from here, we decided to give this place a try. The place has plenty of parking spaces. The restaurant has the typical Asian restaurant feel to it, but that's okay because its the food is what I'm there for. However, despite the great portion that they gave and the really awesomely attentive waitstaff it did not make up for the okay Pho and not so good Spring Roll with peanut sauce. The Pho was a little bland and the Spring Roll had beef in it instead of pork, which is fine, except the beef they used in it was a little dry. I see that this place has a lot of great reviews on it, but it just wasn't our cup of tea. Update 4/5/16: Since my last review, I have moved to San Antonio and have tried many different Vietnamese restaurants and by far this is one of the better Vietnamese restaurant in San Antonio. Every good thing must come to an end. I've been coming here for years. I never needed a translator to order. Even pointing to it, menu item, doesn't work. The portions have shrunk, the prices have soared, and the food quality suffers. I wondered if I had come at an "off" time, but even at lunch, when it was always packed, fewer and fewer people come here anymore. The staff is totally new. Horrible!!! -10 since the "real" owners left for Georgia!!! Restaurant used to be +10 in SA, the best noodle house restaurant in SA, but lately has beed deteriorating horribly! Horrible service, horrible food (inedible) filthy inside restaurant and if you want waiter smelling of cigarettes as well as watching him smoke outside the front door...flies coming in through left open drive thru window, observing unsanitary food health practices, not washing hands between smoking, clearing tables, cleaning floor and then serving your food, then by all means this is the place for you. USED to be excellent with above industry standards, but obviously people running restaurant don't care. Will not be a returning customer after frequenting the place for 16 years.
