The food was good until I saw a piece of plastic in my soup ., and right away let the waiter know the issue , but to my surprise he just took the plastic and didn't say anything at all . And when I asked for the manager she ignored me and walk away from me .. And they didn't even apologies and charge me full price .. Sometimes, I go to Starbucks. Okay, that's not really the best way to start off a review of a pho place, but let me explain - I love random little independent coffee shops. I know exactly what I'm going to get when I order my small #1 with my iced coffee/condensed milk that is a necessity for me when I go to any pho place. I know what it's going to taste like, I know exactly how much of it I'll be able to eat. It's like a comfort thing in a way - it's my version of old faithful. In pho form. (Which just brought to mind a very pleasing image.) I docked them a star because I've had a few occasions where I've had to track down someone to pay. While I'm grateful to not be stared at while I eat by someone waiting for me to pay (which is kind of unnerving), I just want to pay for my meal and slosh out the door. It's pho. But I'm reviewing the COFFEE. I haven't had coffee in years--five? six?--because I quit in order to help me quit smoking. Well, FIVE YEARS AFTER THAT, I finally quit smoking. Luckily, I never took up The Bean or the cancer sticks again. We go to this Than Bros the most, because we can walk there; it's not particularly clean-looking or stylish (like, AT ALL), but it's what we know. Truthfully, we like Pho Cyclo better, but when we were there last week, my girlfriend said, "You've NEVER had the coffee here?" Being a snob about things like coffee makes me feel better, so I turned my nose up and said EWW COFFEE EWWWW. And then, of course, I tried it. The Cafe Sua and Cafe Sua Da (iced) were really yummy--you need to like SWEET SWEET & STRONG, but I loved it so much that first sip, I ordered it again yesterday. Nummynumnum. I'm sure this kind of coffee is easy to make at home, but for two bucks--in this $6 frou-frou latte world we live in--it's worth the jaunt down The Ave. ON the PHO: when we went yesterday, the noodles were really different (I even found a BIG WIDE noodle in there, what?) which made the texture totally off. One winter when I was really busy. I did not have time to cook my dinners. So I ate hear 4 times a week. I would order the Large #23 with everything. For $4.95. Then the ritual begins. I add my condiments of shoyu, fish sauce, and basil leaves. Take a sip of soup. Then proceed to work on the noodles. I always squeeze the plum sauce or shirchaca hot sauce on every bite of noodle I take. Take a bite bite of meat. Then continue till I clear out all the noodles. Then I take the sprout and add them to the remaining soup. Now I use the sprouts like noodles. When those are gone. Place down the chop sticks. And then I place my hands on both side of the bowl and I raise it to my lips. This is when the slurping begins. Taking in the last of the broth. Then I work on the cream puff for dessert . Hot, tasty, and fast. + a pretty Vietnamese girl always made the meal enjoyable. If your cold or recovering from a sickness. A hot bowl of Pho will always make you feel better. read more

I love this place. During University my friend and I would intensely try to find some cash(they are cash only in a plastic world) just so we could have some chicken pho and cream puffs. From the outside(and possibly the inside) this place isn't all that attractive its a little worn down, and the steamy windows and red lanterns can make the mind wonder many things..... Either way, it's probably the best pho I've ever had. They GIVE you a cream puff just for sitting down! You can buy some extras to take home too :) Just 1 small chicken pho will fill you up for a price that's just under $5 what more can you ask for? Three words: cheap, quick, and dirty. In all seriousness, this my probably my favorite pho place on the ave, mainly because they have the best chilli sauce recipe! Something so trivial can really make a difference. Service is super quick and also friendly. Another reason why I love this place is because even if you're dining alone, you don't have to look like a loser sitting by yourself because they seat you at the communal table! This review is for only the UD and Bellevue locations. Also, the star rating for this one is unique because it is mostly a relative score in relation to all the other pho places. As the top pho place so far in my experience as of 12.12.12, it gets 5 stars. I've been coming here for a long time and it never fails to impress me. 1. Consistency. I'm talking about being able to deliver the same #9 to me with no variation, exactly how I remembered it, for the past 8 years I've been going, at both locations. How is this possible? Only the pho gods at Than Bros knows. 2. Taste. I must say that they probably use a ton of MSG, but every once in a while I indulge so I'm not too worried about it affecting my health. I do love the broth's beefy flavor for beef pho, the slightly overused onion, and just the right size and amount of rice noodles and protein per a medium bowl. 3. Hot! In fact I've stopped wearing sweaters when coming here, since I know it'll be so hot I'll have to take it off anyway. Prone to sweat people - beware. 4. My only previous gripe about them was that they don't take credit card. Now they do! No more forgetting to bring cash and embarrassingly leave collateral with them while running down to the bank. 5. They still don the age old tradition of giving you a cream puff with your meal. 'Nuff said. The only downsides (which are prevalent at all pho places) are the decor of large wall mirrors and shady washrooms, the ripped up chairs, and also the stink of pho on your clothes when you are satisfied with your choice of awesome belly-filling food. Lastly, some friends and myself are on a quest to explore every single pho place in the Seattle area, and so far with a handful under our belt TB is still a pretty decisive winner and so far our benchmarking figure for every other place. Than Bros is a consistent chain. Great food at every location you end up at and easily the best pho on the ave. If you're still a college student this should be your dream place as you get a whole lot of bang for your buck. As I've graduated and entered the real world I've come to the realization that pho can get relatively expensive outside of this place. Particularly if you find yourself wandering beyond the west coast. My go-to-pho no-matter where I go is "pho tai bo viên." Yeah, that's not specifically on the menu. Steak and meat balls. That's how I do. The chili oil they have out adds so much flavor too. If you like spice in your life, it is an absolute must. #Protip Complimentary cream puffs is a game changer. Vietnamese coffee is always best to round off a big bowl for a Pho-King as well. You also shouldn't come to an Asian restaurant and expect good service especially at these prices, but they aren't bad. It's actually really good. My only teeny tiny gripe here is they could probably use a remodel. The mirrors are an old trick to make the place look larger than life but it also adds to the tackiness along with the paint and everything else. They're really crowded too so I get that it's hard to keep the tables clean as there's a constant rotation of never ending noodle mongering students. But then again who cares? I love pho. I'm guilty of eating it multiple days in a row. If you are what you eat, then I'm a bowl of beefy, noodly goodness. It's basically my primary food group. For me, pho restaurants fall into their own special category; I make exceptions and allowances for them which I wouldn't for other establishments. It's steamy, the floors look like they haven't been mopped in a decade, there's a mirror on every wall, and the staff seem disinterested at best. Yet, somehow, I don't really care because nothing comes between me and my bowl of hot, brothy perfection, not even the possibility of awkward mirror eye contact with a complete stranger. On the Ave, I always find myself coming back to Than Brothers because their quality is consistent, they give you more meat and noodles than other Vietnamese places in the University District, and I think their broth tastes the best. Quick and tasty pho coupled with great service put this place ahead of the other pho restaurants on the Ave. There was a time when my boyfriend and I were sharing large size bowls to cut down on cost (we're grad students), and the servers here at Pho Than Brothers never blinked an eye. I normally go the Than bros on Aurora (which I like much better). The Capitol Hill location is ok... however... the University District location is AWFUL!. If you want any hot sauce or plum sauce - they will charge you for the cup. They have signs for everything ("bathrooms for customers only"... "No change for parking...") Admittedly, I can't stand pettiness. If you order something "to go" and have your order in their hand "they'll tell you to SIT DOWN. The last time I was (and ever will go there) I was trying to see what they're kitchen looked like (which IS viewable from the lobby) but I didn't like the way they looked nervous when I looked into the kitchen which looked pretty dirty. They very rudely told me to sit down (and the place was nearly empty). If you like Than Bros - it's worth the trip to ANY of their other locations. read more

The pho is good with a great broth and perfect noodle consistancy. No frills. The price is cheap when its all said and done and usually too much for me. Than Brothers is the place that addicted me to the warm noodles soup when I moved to Seattle a little over 4 years ago. The price is cheap (we're talking less than 5 bucks for a large). The service is quick (lightning quick... its a get in and get out kind of place). The portions are large (I eat quite a bit and a large does the job with no problems). Also, the cream puffs are delightful. It is perfect for students. On the negative end of things, Than Brothers has a cafeteria like feel. WIth round table seating, and flourescent lighting, you definitely know where they cut costs to keep the prices so low. They also don't take credit cards, which isn't a gigantic inconvenience being as there is an atm on every corner of the U district, but is still something that leaves them slightly behind. I, none the less, stop in at LEAST once a week during the winter, and will continue as long as I live in Seattle. read more

Once they put TRIPE (aka stomach lining) in my vegetarian pho. yuck. However, both times the place has seemed INCREDIBLY DIRTY even for the Ave. Also, the soup was awful. Are they not following the recipes at the other places? The veggie broth was weak and even my date, having meat, complained about his soup. I love Than Bros, but this is my least favorite location. The only reason why I came here recently is because I drove to another location at 1030am just to find out that they weren't open yet. Yelp told me that the Ave location was open so this is where I ended up. I swear EVERY time I come here, at least one person's drink has something in it. This time, 2 out of 4 people in my party received waters with crap in it. Unsanitary much? As for the pho, it tastes good and it's one of the cheapest! The service is also fast. Good soup, base is relatively robust with good sides (bean sprouts, lime, basil, hot sauces, etc) to customize your soup at your table. Extremely fast food turnaround time around lunch time as they're trying to service people as fast as possible - it can be a little awkward if you're looking for a place to settle down and chat between 12-2p. Always get the extra noodles, worth the $.50!! A large bowl (15+ choices of pho) runs about $4.75. Beware however, they charge an extra $0.50 for using a credit/debit card which was a little annoying when I first realized it. Pho doesn't get better until you go out to Ranch 99 or down to the I-district. Good for what you pay and close to the UW! read more
