Bend is not an Asian cuisine paradise. In fact, it leans towards being foodie desert in that regard. I love Thai, Korean, Malaysian, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese food. There are some good options, but generally those cuisines are poorly represented. So, Pho Viet is a welcome feature in the local culinary landscape. We arrived on a late Saturday afternoon (5ish) half expecting it to be packed. In our brief experience, Bendites really flock to bars and brewpubs during happy hours and a lot of Yelp reviews for the more popular restaurants - of which Pho Viet is one - emphasize the frequent wait times. But no. While the restaurant had a lot of diners, there were one or two booths still open and a number of tables. It filled up quickly while we were there, however. - Slow but friendly service. Although not packed, it took a while for our order to be taken, empty beer bottles strategically placed at the end of the table were ignored, no follow-up after our food was delivered. - Pho Viet is not overly expensive but it's not cheap, either. Prices might be a tad high for the product delivered. It's also the only decent Vietnamese restaurant in town, it seems, so market forces bear. - Shaking beef is very good with tender cuts of beef and a good portion. Served on a bed of rice noodle with sliced tomato and cucumber ringing the plate, the presentation works. In terms of flavor and seasoning, this dish is tasty but perhaps a little too sweet. 'A little too sweet' might be a Bend thing, I don't know. - Chicken pho is very good. Beef pho is the touchstone for pho and I'll definitely have to try one of those varieties, but I was in the mood for chicken. Pho Viet pulls it off quite well. - Veggie pho is excellent. Making decent vegetarian pho is about as hard as vegetarian ramen, but once again, Pho Viet manages it. My vegetarian wife will probably be hankering for this soup often. - Cha gio very good. Not greasy at all. - Nice booths in a fairly cramped restaurant. Not sure I'd want to sit at one of the tables. - Local bottled beer, as well as some Asian beers. - Quiet. No obnoxious loud music and the patrons and kitchen tend not to be too boisterous. We're not talking morgue level of quiet, just not loud. All told, a solid restaurant and one we'll return to often, I suspect. read more

The service received by the lady server is a one star. The young man who originally helped us provided GREAT service. He was very polite nice and welcoming. The lady server on the other hand was unfriendly, unapproachable and seemed rude. Asked her for some sweet chili sauce to eat with our fried rice and she said they didn't have any, asked if I can get sauce for the pho (Siracha, chili oil pepper and oyster sauce) she said she already put them in the bag. Walked out and checked the bag sure enough she provided us with NO sauce, had to go back in and ask for small containers to get myself some sauce. Prices are high but we didn't mind. This is a tasty spot to dine in Bend, you cannot go wrong here. The atmosphere is interesting, probably due for an update however this does not have anything to do with the service or food. The staff is very friendly, greeting you as your walk in and bringing you menus and water right as you sit down. if you turn immediately to the right and grab a table in that section, you will see giant versions of the menu on the wall showcasing photos of the food offered. I generally sit in there and help my decision based on what i see. The staff is friendly, cordial and helpful. They clearly just want you to have a good experience and genuinely do care. The food is fresh and tasty, real authentic and made to order. It also come out quick, though I have not been in the location when it is 100% full but at half capacity I was still impressed with the speed that they have your order to you. read more

I came to bend on a travel nursing assignment and I heard from several people to go to Pho Viet. I've had really good authentic Vietnamese food in the past and I decided to take my mom here last night, who came out to visit me. The place was really busy on a Friday night. We were seated and the entire structure of service was chaotic. We had to ask for water after waiting for 15-20 minutes. The waiter was very short with us and I almost felt guilty for telling him that we were ready to order. I'm a nurse, mannerism in the service industry is so important. Especially during this time where businesses have closed. I felt like we were seated in this corner and no one really cared. So many people were lining up to order to go orders and they were getting their food first before the people that were sitting down and waiting to order for 10-25 minutes. We ordered spring rolls, the bbq beef, pho and Tom yum soup. The spring rolls were extremely greasy, the bbq beef was salty and not the best. What was really disappointing was that the pho and Tom yum had no flavor at all. I couldn't taste the anise in the pho and the Tom yum wasn't even Tom yum, it tasted like water with a bunch of random vegetables in it. I was so disappointed because I kept hearing these raving reviews. I hate to write a one star review, but I have to bring it forth because it was the worst dining out experience I've had in a long time and the food was terrible. First off, I will give some allowances for bad service due to re-opening and robust summer travels, but we were mostly ignored, our order was not correct, but hubby was hungry and didn't want to wait another 1/2 hr. Came upon this gem while searching for some comfort food near our hotel! Highly recommend! The service was amazing, considering we came in within a short time before they were closing. I love authentic restaurants like this!! The owner & servers are amazing! We ordered a pho tai, pho 3, and seafood pho. All amazing! So much seafood in that bowl of pho too! We also ordered chicken wings and fend calamari. Perfectly crispy and seasoned! We enjoyed that they came on a bed of veggies too. They don't post prices on their website and had only a few items listed on their Yelp menu, but I wouldn't have bought anything if they'd been transparent with it. It cost over $30 for one chicken vermicelli and tofu spring roll appetizer, plus $5 FOR ONE TINY EGG ROLL to be added. Sad to ever leave negative reviews but have to be honest. Ordered the beef w broccoli. Not a single bite of the beef was chewable. Tried every piece being hopeful, but spit them out. The vegetables were fine but the sauce was simply tasteless. The crispy rolls arrived on a nest of brown, limp old lettuce. The rolls themselves tasted of slightly old oil. The man who took my telephone order was simply delightful which made me think I'd made a good choice. (Although he did think I was someone he already knew!) Vietnamese food is not made of pho alone. While I haven't had pho here, I have had Pho Viet's bun (rice noodle dishes), rolls, both fresh and fried, and bahn mii. For setting, service, food and price, I've found better all around in Vietnamese restaurants both local and outside Bend. For a while Pho Viet was the only Vietnamese restaurant in town. If you wanted Vietnamese food it was this or nothing. After my experience here, I would choose nothing. So it seems fair enough to share news in this review that there are now Vientamese food alternatives in Bend if you, like me, enjoy Vietnamese food but don't enjoy Pho Viet. There is also another Vietnamese restaurant in Bend, recently opened on S Highway 97 under different ownership. Called Dang's, "I'm a fan" for food, service and prices there. If you read no further than this, here's a tip: go to Dangs not here. You're welcome. I realize that I hold the minority opinion of lackluster experience with Pho Viet based on Yelp reviews. But here goes my humble opinion 1) Service is somewhere between poor and "you must be kidding" bad. Not, it seems, for any lacking of desire on the part of most of the folks there to do a good job. But they seemingly haven't been trained in either the basics of waiting tables or in the basics of Vietnamese food. 2) Pho Viet is also the kind of place where clean up staff from the kitchen bring out big plastic tubs and squeeze in between your table and the one just vacated by other diners and clatter the dirty dishes into the tub within inches of your back. Not a criticism of the folks doing the work. They do what they are trained to do. These are the owner's issues to address. 3) Food can take a long time to get from the kitchen to the table. Then the server seems to disappear meaning if you need follow up, as in you received the wrong order, good luck with that. 4) The owner is friendly, but he can be a bit overwhelming in his enthusiasm and pressing his guests to order what he wants them to try. 5) Ambiance is sardine can tight and not particularly pleasant. Although as demonstration that I hold a minority opinion of "meh", I'll note that the reason it is sardine can tight has not only to do with too many tables being jammed into the small space, but with the fact that the tables have diners in the chairs. 6) Previous owners or tenants of this restaurant space made an effort to provide an (ADA) accessible ramp (even if awkward) in the front door from the side of the parking lot so people who don't climb steps due to disability can get in the door. It is equal access law, actually, to provide all people access in the door. But Pho Viet's owner continually allows his young male relatives to park their large SUV's in a way that blocks the ability to get to and use that ramp. If you think this isn't important to consider or that it couldn't be you or your loved one who one day need equal, barrier free access (aka ADA) rules to be followed, think about the fifteen human beings who faced amputations and learning to re-engage in the "new normal" after the Boston Marathon bombings. It is unacceptable to have this access blocked here through owner indifference. 7) Prices are just too high for the quality and portions. Not as high as Sweet Saigon, where they seem to border on ridiculous. THIS N THAT: 1) Parking lot is awkward for entry and exit with some traffic coming in off of Highway 97 at an aggressive pace. Just a heads up. 2) Outdoor area at front of restaurant for seating in nice weather. read more

What a gem! We were passing through Bend & decided we wanted Vietnamese food for lunch. My wife looked up her cellphone & found Pho Viet & Cafe. I said let's go! The Bun Bo Hue photo on the front door really caught my attention. My Vietnamese friends all loved this spicy soup & so do I. The problem is, not many restaurants offer this dish. I knew I had to try. My lady ordered the R1 Rice Combo with grilled pork chop & Jasmine rice. One of the first things I noticed about this small restaurant is the fact that the owner Mr Tan himself is actively working on the floor. He made eye contact with us & chatted with us several times while we were there. He apparently noticed we were there for the first time. When the Bun Bo Hue arrived on our table the aroma suggested this was not going to be just spicy but a little sour as well. The soup itself was very flavorful & balanced. The meat was tasty & tender & the vegetables tasted fresh. I found myself eating up the whole soup like I have never eaten this soup before. Well done! I tasted some of the pork chop & steamed rice from her plate & it was full of flavors as well. The highlight of the meal was the mango & sweet rice which the owner Mr Tan himself recommended. The mango was slightly salted. It was slightly less ripe than I would like it but it was still good. The rice was delicious! It went along very well with the sauce which was sprinkled with sesame seeds & crushed peanuts. Yummy! Overall the quality of the food & the level of services really made this place a top choice for lunch or dinner! If you are in Bend, OR & you are hungry for Vietnamese food, you definitely need to give this place a try! read more
