I was excited to try Phoenix Dessert after hearing of its popularity in LA! The service was friendly and they offered us samples of the bubble waffle while were still deciding on what to order. Ended up choosing the coconut jelly noodles and fried ube mochi balls. The coconut jelly noodles was refreshing and the perfect balance of sweet! The fried ube mochi balls came with six, though honestly I was done after two. They were quite heavy. The shop itself isn't big, the display of desserts take up a good amount of space. The Black Sesame Pudding and Taro Mochi are both very good and neither is too sweet , very well balanced and healthy . Would have enjoyed the Portuguese Beef Stew if there was not so much fat and chewy cartilage, if there was leaner beef this dish would be good. This spot has the best mochi I've had in Kearny Mesa. Mango and green tea mochi are my favorite. Went here to try out the mochi desserts, and got my favorite durian rolls. The center is pure durian goodness overflowing out of the mochi wrap, which is glutenous, soft, and melts in your mouth with the perfect amount of chew and coconut flaked on the outside. It's a texture trip for your tastebuds and senses. The coconut jellies were bomb, too, just right, sweet, and creamy. I highly recommend this place. We just received our delivery. It was fairly quick. The snack items are very SMALL portions. As far as the deserts, I wasn't impressed with the durian lovers and the coconut noodles in them, which were bland. There were pieces of durian, and that was really all to that dessert. The purple rice and noodles didn't have much of a flavor. The mango mochi had a real piece of mango inside, but I was not a fan of the mochi consistency, which seemed a little hard. The custard was probably my favorite and would recommend. As far as the snack items, they were all very good. Just very small portions so you'll need to order quite a few of these. read more

I was hoping it would be made in house for a fresher treat but it was still good. It was a little inconvenient having to order in front and pay at the register in the back. By that, I mean I wish they would also put the front items also near the register so you can make decision there while waiting to pay. I wanted to get some items in front but I felt rushed since there was a line I figured I can order them at the register but I forgot what the items looked like/name of the items to order by the time I got there (I was ordering additional items on the menu) so I had to go back to the front and order from there and then go back to pay. They need to work on this ordering process. There are some seating inside but its a small area so we took our desserts to go. Was excited to try this place as we've been waiting for a good Asian dessert place in SD! Dessert soups are particularly my thing so the menu sparked my interest right away. My partner and I ended up getting the walnut soup (hot, of course) and the almond black sesame custard. Both were very tasty, though the walnut soup wasn't completely what I expected. I grew up eating walnut, almond, black sesame soup mostly from packets. This one was not very sweet and had a slightly roasted flavor, almost like a walnut latte. It was cozy and comforting and grew on me, though. The custard was delicious and very fun to eat. Our friend who was with us got the black sticky rice soup (cold) and apparently the coconut milk tasted off, which is unfortunate. We also tried some of their bottled drinks - chrysanthemum tea (tasty, slightly bitter) and HK milk tea (good, strong). Outdoor seating was a plus. Definitely want to come back and try some of the things mentioned in other reviews, like the fruit teas and coconut mango rolls. read more
