MONICA found out we had about an hour drive back home she didn't want any of our goodies to melt. MONICA provided us with a special case and ice packets. They have a wide variety of Southeast Asian desserts. They have lots and lots of durian desserts, which are usually hard to find. We ordered the mango with coconut noodles, black sesame dessert soup, black sticky rice mochi, matcha black sesame mochi, mango rolls and durian rolls. Everything was delicious! My favorite thing was the coconut noodles! It's a must try! The place is pretty small, a few bar stools at the window and three small tables with short ikea stools that seat 4 people at the most. Tucked away in a busy strip mall off Clairemont Mesa Blvd, Phoenix is located near Jersey Mike's. All the desserts look amazing and you can tell the chef has artistic talent. Phoenix is a well known brand in greater LA area, but their first branch in San Diego is quite horrible. Since their grand opening, I have been there a few times at different time of the day in order to gauge their true performance, but the result is quite disappointing. From savory cold dishes to their Cantonese dessert, the food quality is just not consistent. Here are a few examples. Their drinks seem to be made with whatever the staff want at the time. I ordered their signature mango-pomelo sago drink, and I got a cup of coconut milk with sago instead (it is meant to be a mix of mango and coconut). When I asked about it, the staff indicated that it was their way of preparing the drink. My friend got the same drink and hers tasted a lot more watery than mine, and was also missing mango. Making the same drinks at the same time that taste differently requires special skills, I believe. I also tried their combo pudding (multiple flavors in a box) at different occasions. Their pudding tasted slightly differently each time. The mango pudding lacked mango taste (not even artificial mango taste), and their coconut pudding tasted a bit sour at one time. It might be going bad. I think they might have an issue with temperature at storage or during preparation, and putting different puddings that deteriorate at different rate in the same box amplified the effect. Luckily, I didn't get sick from it. I ordered the bubble waffle another time, and it was completely soggy. It had a chance to be not bad, as it was freshly made, but the staff was covering it with a piece of paper right after it was made, essentially steaming it while waiting for it to cool down. The younger staffs were engaged in some intense chit-chatting when my waffle died on the counter. The batter was too sweet, and the consistency was like a mini sponge cake -- it definitely wasn't supposed to be like that. The batter was simply wrong. The only reason I gave more than one star is because they have durian desserts and I love durian, but I would not get their durian pancakes next time -- another batter disaster caused it to fall apart and made a mess. If you found this place and have high expectations based on their reputation in LA, you could be disappointed. Pick a good lucky day to go in if you decide to go. read more

Fun alternative to boba! The dessert here is not too sweet and there is a variety of Asian flavors. You can choose dessert soups or drinks or even small snacks. There are a couple savory options as well but I view this as more of a dessert place. If you're thinking about driving to Irvine for Hong Kong desserts, DON'T. Phoenix Dessert is a 626 staple specializing in Hong Kong style desserts. Much like the other HK dessert cafe that no longer exists, Phoenix Dessert does the same but BETTER! I feel like they have an expanded menu in comparison to the previous cafe in SD. I grabbed the assorted mochi and the black sticky rice with durian. In comparison to one's I've head before, the mochi was light and flavorful. I don't think any of the flavors were overwhelming and fits in the "not the too sweet" bin of desserts. The surprise for me was how QUICKLY I ate the durian black sticky rice. I wouldn't consider myself a durian maniac. I dabble but I've never fully consumed an entire helping of durian. I'd eat half a durian mochi and call it a day. I never found it repulsive but it also seemed like a task. Phoenix Dessert's bowl of durian in jelly and coconut milk(?) was a blend of sweet and tropical that kept me scooping up a bite one after the other. The only critique I have is the pre-made drinks. I bought the HK style milk tea and I'm not sure if people from Hong Kong likes their milk tea ALL tea with a hint of milk but that was my impression. I'm not a heavy tea drinker and I'm used to the usual Americanized version of milk teas. It could be just my expectation not matching the reality but, I wish I could've ordered the milk tea custom to my liking. At least I'll know when I come back how much sweetness I'd need but since these are pre-packaged, I would personally have to try EVERY drink to find one my taste buds would agree with. Not a very big selection of beverages and the royal milk tea we got was pretty bitter, but the pecan tarts were top notch. I feel like I've been living under a rock because I had no idea Phoenix was opening a location in San Diego! This means I don't have to go up to 626 anymore to get my fix of their dessert rolls! This location is on Claremont Mesa Blvd. in the Carl's Jr plaza which means THERES PLENTY OF PARKING. We went near the end of the day so they were sold out of all the rolls but they told me they'll have more tomorrow (so you know they're made fresh daily). The store was super clean and I love that I can see everything in the display cases. There's a couple tables inside and outside to eat at, but probably not suitable for hanging out for a long time. All the workers were super friendly and knowledgeable to help explain the menu. We ended up getting a mixed fruit delight and mango delight. They were both very tasty and the quality is very consistent with their other locations. Came out super fast too. Mango coconut rolls are my favorite so we will be back for those, and the marinated mix platter too. read more

This evening, I went here with my family members and it was an absolute disaster. The desserts we ordered were the mochi, ice cream, egg custard and tiramisu. The mochi was harder than metal and the mango was more sour than sour candy. The mango ice cream didn't taste like mango and tasted like pure milk. Even supermarket ice cream was better. However, the tiramisu and egg custard was mediocre. On top of that, the service was poor and the workers had frowns. They forgot our desserts and they were slow. My friend and I came here after eating ramen for dinner. It was around 7 pm and the store was pretty empty. Staff here was very quick and since my friend and I got stuff from the display case, they handed it to us immediately. They have a lot of different drinks, dessert soups, and mochis. I opted to get their fresh mango mochi since I like desserts with fresh fruits. The mochi they have is not as chewy as the Japanese mochi. If you've ever had banh bao chi, a Vietnamese mochi dessert, this one is very similar in texture and also rolled in coconut. I really like this texture of mochi and the mango tasted really fresh, despite being a little tart. I would come back to get their durian roll, mango mochi, or their pomelo sago drink. Well as we walk in You see a big display of all these Deserts in front of you and one of the popular ones is the Mochis and of course the Mango rice drink !! So we ordered both and it came out super fast !! Well let me tell you it is amazing and the Mochi is so fricken good !! As for the Service it was not bad either was helpful and looking around at the menu there is hot food also but I was craving something cold !! One of the best dessert place that specializes in Durian! Their durian rolls are delicious and chewy. The durian roll is made of a chewy Mochi filled with fresh durian and custard, rolled over coconut flakes. The durian roll has the perfect amount of sweetness to it. It does come with 2 rolls per tray. It is on the pricier side, but completely understand because the durian fruit itself is pretty expensive. Unfortunately, since the durian rolls are made with Mochi the texture starts to harden after 1-2 days. There was one where the Mochi was tough to eat after a day of purchase, so not sure if it's made fresh daily or I just got a bad one. I also tried the Passionfruit jelly, which tasted just like jello to me with very little Passionfruit flavoring. I was hoping for more of a passionfruit tart taste. This place sells a variety of desserts, including tea and ice cream. They also sell snacks as well. My favorite place to get dessert in LA/626 area finally opened in San Diego. Unfortunately, they do not serve the regular food like the other Phoenix's, but they do offer cold cuts. The drink I got was so good and my absolute favorite drink of all time! It is coconut milk with diced fruit pieces and sago. It was refreshing, light, and not too sweet! I highly recommend.
