He is busy, trying to set a table for customers. 1. When you walk in, be sure to get a ticket with a number. That's your reservation. Once your number is called, then you walk up to this same man. He will take you to your table. 2. Once you're settled into your table, you should have a little paper. This is for the ladies who will stamp on the paper when you order a specific dish. 3. The dish is served through a rolling cart. The lady will roll these carts to your table, asking what you like. You can get anything that is available --- steam bbq bun, eggroll, and lotus rice, just to name a few. 4. Once you make a decision, you will be served with three delicious food of your choice! The lady will stamp your little paper, which is needed for billing at the end. The takeout boxes are against the wall. Feel free to grab these when the server/host are not available. Be sure to ask for chili oil if you like it. There is also hot mustard available, which goes well with some dishes. Be prepared for a lifetime experience if this is your first time. Seeing this place on Yelp, I knew based on the 3.5 rating that this could be a classic Chinese restaurant where the service is bad and the food is good. This is our favorite dim sum place near the East Valley. Typical of true Chinese dim sum, you need to be aggressive to flag down your server carts especially if you don't speak the native language. Not really uncommon in my experience. The place can get busy especially on weekends, but the food is worth the wait. Our family doesn't order any items that are too adventurous but their food is great. Our typical fare is steamed bbq pork buns, shu mai, har gow, chinese broccoli, chow mein, egg custard, and sesame balls. Love the hot tea they serve. I think it's chrysanthemum. I would make the drive from Tucson to have dim sum here any weekend!! Because it's SO good. This is such a solid dim sum place. It's extremely fast paced so even though you may think you are experiencing poor service, that's not the case!! Just so you non Asian folks know, Asians are extremely impatient people so this type of service is a solid A+ for our anal personalities. If what you don't want doesn't come around, you can grab a server and just ask them for it and in the blink of an eye, it'll be in front of you. I was in between appts so I decided to try this place for a week day sit down dim sum experience. In the past few years, I've only ordered dim sum to go on the weekends. The lady that sat me was very friend and professional (she was wearing a blue shirt) vs the other traditional folks that push the carts. She took my tea order and even grabbed a cart of the traditional dim sum items initially. I requested the chicken feet, siu mai and to my surprise they offered curry beef tendon. I have never seen this at Mekong or Great Wall. I must say these chicken feet were really well prepared and flavorful. When the har gow were available, i got an order of those and was not impressed by them. The appeared smaller than other places, I've tried and the skin was thicker too. It appears they are limited in their offerings during the weekday but willing to prepare other items upon request. The nice thing is that when a table requests it, they will make a few extra dishes of it and then offer it to other tables. So for that I give them extra kudos. However, the restaurant was very warm inside and borderline hot. I would suggest for them to turn up the air during summer and they have a good amount of customers. It was very uncomfortable. I love this place. Best place I have found since moving from Northern CA to AZ. Their rice is so good and the portion is exactly what you pay for. Their dim sum is pretty good, their all-you-can-eat is an amazing deal. I've never had an issue with the service here and I have no clue why this place doesn't have more stars. This review is for dimsum only. Phoenix Palace has moved up to probably my favorite dimsum restaurant in the Phoenix area. It's less oily than Great Wall, more reasonably priced than Mekong Palace, and makes a variety of dishes very well. I've ordered takeout from here multiple times and the quality has been impressively consistent. Savory dimsum dishes: Baked barbecue pork buns -- these are amaaaazing. The bread is baked to perfection with a perfectly browned top, the barbecue pork is a nice balance between savory and sweet, and it blows the steamed version out of the water. Shrimp and chive dumplings -- I enjoyed these, as they were pan-fried and had a nice crispy bottom as well as a good stuffing of shrimp. I do think it could have been fried slightly more, but it was tasty nonetheless. Steamed scallop dumpings -- solid rendition, quite traditional. Salted water fried mochi dumplings -- these were cooked incredibly well so that the outer layer of mochi dough was crispy while the inside was soft and chewy. The ground pork filling was also seasoned well and contrasted nicely with the subtly sweet dough. Sticky rice chicken -- these were absolutely delicious, and the lotus leaf taste really permeated throughout the sticky rice. I didn't find I could really taste the chicken because I believe it was mixed in with ground pork, but the flavor of the filling was very good. I could arguably like these more if there were a salted yolk hidden in somewhere, but that's not a fault of the preparation. Sweet dimsum dishes: Po egg tarts -- more creamy and decadent than their regular egg tart counterparts, these were made incredibly well. The filling was so creamy it was almost akin to a panna cotta. I loved that one order came with three instead of just two. There was a nice, flaky rough puff crust that was baked well and not soggy even with the creamy filling. Fried red bean sesame balls -- like the salted water fried dumplings, these were fried to perfection. The sesame was fragrant and made the outside even more crispy while the inside mochi dough was still soft and chewy. The red bean paste wasn't overly sweet and though I'm partial to mung bean paste, these were still delicious. If Phoenix Palace weren't so far away from downtown Phoenix, I'd be there every weekend. Staff wore masks and gloves and the place was clean. I felt comfortable. The food continues to be amazing here. We had the salt and pepper pork chops -- crunchy pieces of pork chop spicy with jalapeño slices. OMG so great. The other dish was beef with ginger and pineapple. I thought it might be a weird combination but it turned out to be marvelous. You should try it. We also had the vegetable rolls appetizer. 4 fresh, crunchy veggie rolls-not greasy.
