Not impressed and kind of boggled because there are some good reviews here as well as on Doordash which has it noted as an "Infatuation Pick". I've had some amazing pho so I might have some high expectations but I do feel like I know what pho is supposed to taste like. The Chicken Pho broth tasted like Campbell's chicken noodle soup and the the chicken itself tasted like Costco rotisserie chicken that they shredded and froze. I would call the chicken pho "Vietnamese style chicken noodle soup" so not to confuse customers since it's not a true pho broth. The Beef Pho broth was a little better but still not the best. A good pho broth doesn't need hoisin or siracha and this one definitely needed it along with lime, basil, and jalapeños, and with all that added, still didn't get to the taste of my liking. The actual beef which is supposed to be American waygu lacked quality and also tasted stale like the chicken. I just tried Phorage for the first time this week, and while I was slightly hesitant because of the average rating on Yelp, I was pretty pleased with my "wagyu beef" pho! The broth was flavorful, they provided all the typical pho fixings (basil, sprouts, lime), and was happily provided with extra white onions when asked. Our waitress also checked in on us numerous times and was really friendly. I'm taking off one star because of an awkward interaction I witnessed while paying for our table. Someone was waiting to pick up their order, and for some reason, the guy at the cash register kept rudely asking him to have a seat because he didn't want him standing around waiting for the order. The customer ended up leaving without his order with insults going back and forth during the whole altercation.......I don't totally know what happened, but it seemed really unnecessary, especially in front of other customers. All that said... this place is conveniently close for me, and I'd still come back for their pho. read more

When I worked at Trailer Park, the company participated in a subsidized lunch program for its employees with Eat Club. When Phorage was an option, I quickly and eagerly placed my lunch order and waited with great anticipation until the day arrived when I would finally be able to taste the tasty morsels that came in the special Eat Club package with my name on it. It's been a few years since my time at Trailer Park and since my last in-person meal at Phorage. Since I'm currently on a Vietnamese bun kick due to our upcoming trip to Vietnam, I decided to place an order for lunch pickup. I'm sad to say that the flavor of the food has declined since my last visit. I ordered the chicken with imperial roll and vermicelli noodles. I can understand that the egg roll would have lost its crispy texture during the car ride back to work. However, the flavor of the chicken was disappointingly lackluster. From what I recall, a prior iteration of this dish had a citrusy, lemongrass flavor marinaded into the chicken. That's what gave it a more authentic Vietnamese flavor. Now it's just grilled chicken on a bed of vermicelli noodles, shredded carrots, lettuce and bean sprouts with a side of very mild sweet & sour sauce sprinkled with a dash of fish sauce. What I always fear with Asian restaurants is how the quality and flavor of their food diminish and decline over time, as a cost saving measure or perhaps under pressure to Americanize their dishes. I haven't followed Phorage so I don't know if they have a different chef or are under new management. I was so hopeful that it would be my go-to for my Vietnamese fix on the Westside but alas, so far, Saigon Dish in Lawndale has checked off most of the boxes on what an authentic bun ga nuong should taste like. Guess a trek to South Bay is still closer and cheaper than a trip to Vietnam. read more

I ordered a fried tofu banh mi on Uber Eats with an added fried egg and chicken soup. I probably would never get the same item from here, or consider getting another type of banh mi here. This is compared to the vegetarian banh mi from Banh Mi Che Cali. The bread was extremely hard to bite into, my mouth feels like it's been through forces and my gum hurts. Towards the end of the sandwich, I gave up and threw the bread away...The tofu was only slightly fried and didn't have any flavor. The flavoring of the banh mi came solely from the mayo and jalapeno pieces were everywhere except inside the banh mi itself. The vegetarian banh mi comes with avocado, which is interesting since places usually put it as an extra. It didn't add any flavor profile to banh mi and I wish it was listed as an optional side. The chicken soup...HMMMMM. It tasted nothing like chicken soup and more like fish sauce. I am happy that this place uses fish sauce, as a Westside establishment. However, it was just a plain cup of soup with green onions on top. It was totally not worth the $5 that Phorage listed it for on Uber Eats. Save your money on this item cause it's just fish sauce soup with green onions. I didn't receive any utensils for my order. Like not even a spoon for the soup....I guess it's cause they already know there's nothing inside the soup so they could save a few cents on utensils ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Won't come back for the same item, and probably will remember to bring my own lunch so I don't have to settle for Asian food on the Westside read more

I was craving some broken rice and unfortunately the Vietnamese food scene in LA is not the best! Came here and they actually did have broken rice so kudos to them! Other places who have Vietnamese rice dishes just use regular rice. Unfortunately the broken rice dish here is only served with your choice or meat, so it won't come with the other Viet sides that normally come with broken rice "com tam", like the fried shrimp, tofu, shredded pork, etc. But if you're having a craving and don't want to drive all the way to little Saigon, it does the trick to fulfill a craving. I'm not a pho expert, but the broth here seems really different (more authentic?) than most places. The beef broth was kind of gritty and thick instead of being thin and translucent. My Vietnamese friend told me that it's more authentic when the broth is thick like this. Given that this looks like a hipster place (especially given the word play pho pun of "phorage") I wasn't expecting authentic, but it seemed not only to be good pho but also to be cleaner food than other pho places. We tried both their specialty, the Washugyu beef pho (it's like wagyu beef) and the Vegan version (tofu and vegetables). In addition to the good quality, the portions and prices were excellent. Pho-real, I love the food here so much I actually gold-belly ordered it cross-country to NYC. You can get plenty of good pho in New York but so many of the restaurants have closed due to the pandemic. Then I remembered Phorage on my last trip to LA. My mint had a small slug on it (I removed, no biggie) The shrimp rolls wrapper was overly thick and chewy. Could be it was made a while ago and just served, or just poorly made. I went today and usually I love this place . I was so so disappointed . I ordered chicken wings as appetizer and two pho , one beef and one chicken . All meat tasted very old . From the time I get the wings smelled old , even chicken in the pho was old too . Beef in the pho was tasted old even after adding jalapeño and lemon .I removed the meat and drink the broth . Got a to go order of wagyu pho, summer rolls and imperial rolls. First off it's annoying that the imperial rolls don't come with any sauce. What they call citrus fish sauce vinaigrette should come standard. Instead you have to pay extra for it. The summer rolls were fine but at $13.25 I expected more. And honestly don't know why they cut them into thirds. An already messy roll makes it almost impossible to eat without losing some of the innards. The wagyu beef was actually the best part (super tender), but found it to be pretty bland when it came to the actual broth. The pho base should be your showcase flavor and it was mediocre at best. Admittedly it was my first pho experience since moving from NY, so maybe my standards are too high. I'll adjust this review if this is as good as it gets in the area. I've tried almost every pho spot in Los Angeles. Koreatown is my favorite pho spot to go to. Once I thought they had the best pho in the city "caliphonia". To be exact. But the I went to a pho spot in Marina Del Rey. It's called Camp pho. I swear on Jesus that Camp pho has the best pho in LA. I promise you. A small, local, and phoking casual hang (see what I did there?), located in the old Chego spot on Overland & Rose. Phorage just opened it's doors with a soft launch, and only a few more days (or so) until it's Grand Opening. I've been watching it for weeks, and glad for the new addition to the Palms/WLA neighborhood. Locally sourced organic vegetables, and hormone-free meats....perhaps slightly more expense than the Pho-usual, the price-point is still at a surprisingly reasonable price for the quality. Pho ($9-10), Small bite apps/rolls ($7), Banh Mi ($8), Cold Vermicelli Salad ($10), Broken Rice plates ($10-11), and Vegetables ($7, but to expand beyond the Broccoli w/garlic and mush). All the makings of something great. My investigation revealed the future plan to add a handful of additional items to their current 14 item menu. Several more key options for vegetarians, teas, Vietnamese coffee (yay), Intelligesta (yay x2), and desserts (yay trumped) -- soon on their way to bellies-r-us. Decor is minimalistic in one medium-sized room consisting of: rustic wood, cement floors, and metal chairs. In the center, a high communal table that will for sure be a popular seat, as soon as they add the chairs. Mirrors on the wall to the left, and long wood shelves with decorative bottles, plants, and such to the right. There's not one bit of fabric, so noise (ie. loudtalkers) reflects and bangs around pretty good and loud, too. Upon entering into Phorage, you order at the counter, pay, take a number...and they deliver your order to your table pretty quickly. The Counter-ordering surprised me a bit, but that's cool. 1. Pho with Steak and Brisket -- flavorful, robust, and semi-sweet pork broth, highlighted by cardamon and cinnamon. The beef is cooked medium well, thin (like shabu shabu), but not as tender as I expected. Thin noodles were fresh and my favorite part of the large bowl. Served with the traditional side plate of mint and bean sprouts. Pho is also offered with chicken, as well as Oxtail. 2. Cantonese Shrimp with Broken Rice -- smoky and savory medium-size shrimp, mixed with tons of slivered onion. The flavor was outstanding, and I loved the consistency of the rice. I'd totally get this again (and again). 3. Lime Soda -- house-made to order with fresh lime, mint, and sugar. All this needs is some rum and you got a party. Refreshing and delicious. This area lacks much beyond 3 stars, so I'm especially happy to have Phorage on the scene. The people are absolutely lovely and kind, friendly, and welcoming. May success be theirs for the keeping. Love that this place is nearby in case I really want pho but not the feelin' the west la traffic to go anywhere else more authentic. It's a small hipster modernized pho place, with communal as well as individual seating. It's located in a super tiny plaza with a tiny parking lot. I've only gone there in the evenings and never had trouble finding parking. -Pho 3/5: As expensive as it is, the pho is just soso. The broth just tastes like chicken broth and Vietnamese fish sauce. It's just for $12-$14 a bowl I expect it to be a lot more flavorful. My verdict is that if you're looking for amazing or authentic pho this isn't the place, but if you're desperate for a quick bowl and you're nearby then go for it! -Natural pork chop rice plate 3.5/5: This was yummy but definitely not yummy enough to be worth $10. Pretty standard flavor, part of the meat was a little too burnt and I kinda wish they put more sauce in it as it was a bit dry. -Jidori chicken rice 3.5/5: At $12 the portion is way too small! It's pretty good and the imperial roll isn't bad, so I would prob still get this if I'm rolling in lots of dough and don't care about the price on payday. :) All in all, you'll either love it or not. Never fails to be delish, and in our usual takeout rotation. We get the same thing (for 2) and you can't go wrong: - broken rice with pork is simple and perfect. We fight over the charred edges on the meat and love the slightly sweet sauce - washugyu beef pho warms your heart. A go-to hangover food - Spring roll.
