I really enjoy my meals from here. Tacos are tasty, so are the guacamole and chips! One of my top spots for Mexican food.

I live in the 80s on the UWS. Basically my choices for Mexican are Chipotle or the Super Taco Truck (nothing against Super Taco, of course). I was working up in the 130s, and stumbled across this place. They had a funny sign about paying double for a drink and getting a second one free...I thought, this is MY kinda place. Their drinks are pretty rad. They have specialty drinks, I had something called a "hashtini," a melony kind of martini. It was pretty good, and the bartenders were super cool (the bar had hooks - A must have for any woman carrying a bag). But their food was the clear winner. Cheap, plentiful, filling and good. I had the fish taco "appetizer" (comes 3 to a plate). I'm sure it's an app if you share it. I don't share food. Hubby got some rice and beans, and they were phenom. Some beans can get pasty. This wasn't. And they give you complimentary chips and "salsa" which is made of avocados. Score! (Not guacamole) I'm looking forward to coming back here. So I called and ordered 2 tacos for pickup and the wait was 20 mins even though the place was pretty empty on a sat night. I paid and I tipped just because I work at a restaurant too so I understand. Big mistake. Then I decided to also order chips and guac to go which the waitress said it would take about 5 mins but it ended up being 15 mins. We were waiting inside the establishment but the waitress and bartender kept giving us dirty looks and told us to move from the bar. Like do you want us to wait outside?? It's still winter and it's cold. So we move to the empty seating area. Anyways, guac comes and the waitress just tosses it on the table (wtf instead of just handing it to us??) at where we're waiting at. No sorry for the wait, nothing. Okay fine prob just a bad day? Nah like I said, I worked at multiple food establishments you can't have consistently shitty service all night long But LASTLY, I check my credit card statement, she charged me twice for my tacos, once when I initially paid and the second time when I tipped (she should've just charged me $6 or $7 the second time, not $14 because that included the tacos again) making it a total for $25 for 2 tacos and a side chips and guac. Visited Picante for Sunday brunch. We had a $40 coupon, so we had to order A LOT of food. DO NOT sit inside. It's dark, dingy and kind of disgusting. It was a little chilly out, but I was much happier as soon as we moved to a table outside. The service wasn't too bad, but the food was barely warm when it came out. Arrived for a very late dinner, we grabbed a table outside on a lovely summer night. The menu is fairly extensive with very affordable prices. Orders were placed and large plates of food arrived soon after. Burrito: One of the most gigantic things I have ever seen. Loaded with rice, meat (Pastor was chosen), beans, cheese and pineapple. What, pineapple? Yes I said pineapple. First thought was, how strange, but then we quickly realized how delicious it was. Enchiladas Verde with Chicken: This was a full plate; 4 large enchiladas sided by rice and beans was also huge and doused with the Verde sauce. Upon first bite it was quite tangy and spicy. The chicken was moist and tender. The rice was cooked well and the black beans were good and helped to offset the tanginess of the enchiladas. It was a good dish. Service was OK, it took a while to get the check and water refills, but they were friendly. While the portion size is crazy, the food didn't weigh you down after. The flavors were there and the ingredients fresh, its a great option for the area, especially if you're looking for a late night meal. read more

The vegetarian huarache, quesadilla and burrito are all delicious. Service is generally very slow, but the flip side is that you're never rushed or made to feel that your group has overstayed its welcome (even if you're each spending less than 10 bucks and its prime dinnertime). Plus, the tortilla chips and salsa are refilled continuously, so unless you're in a rush there's no harm done. Nothing I've tried has ever had much spice to it, but the salsa on the table can be poured on. A couple friends and I once split a frozen margarita pitcher (raspberry, I think), which was quite strong but also super-sweet. Tacos are cheap and brimming with meat (see pic) for only $2.50. Reminded me of SoCal: small corn tortillas, lots of meat, cilantro, onion, and lime - - that's all. Simple and delicious. The chips were hot and thin and crispy, and the complimentary house salsa was a spicy and slightly tangy avocado salsa - a nice change from the typical tomato-based deal. They refilled both the chips and salsa promptly. Margarita was pretty sub-par and no one seemed to know what Grand Manier was, but it was only $6, and the tacos made up for it. The food was alright along with their prices, if you end up visiting the place don't expect great customer service or for the waitresses to be attentive. Knowing some spanish would certainly help in making your experience better. I live right down the block and since I've moved to the neighborhood, Picante has always been a favorite. The prices are reasonable, atmosphere is nice, and the food is amazing. one a lazy saturday afternoon, i had a craving for mexican food and decided to try Picante. It was between Picante and La Condesa and I chose Picante b/c I was able to view the menu prior to going. they were offering the brunch menu so we ordered Guacamole Spicy, Steak Huaraches - $8, and hanger steak and eggs - $13. The guac was good but next time I would tell them to lighten up on the onions however the jalapeno kick was there. Steak Huaraches was on the bland side so but edible. I tried the Salsa Verde and the Red Hotsauce but that wasnt spicy - was surprised by that. The hanger steak was flavored well. I would come back again and try some other foods. Its ignorant and lazy I've been in the neighborhood since they opened, but its been long enough for them to get it together. If you order no cheese and no sour cream, expect cheese and sour cream. Long story short. They have ruined yet another evening, and with excessive wait times for delivery and a burrito full of allergens, I won't recommend Picante again. Just wanted to have a drink at the bar but was told by the rude bartender that I'd need to be seated at the bar to have a drink, although half of the bar was empty with no bar stools and I was more comfortable standing at the empty space. Don't let these Harlem transplants fool you. This place is terrible. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, and tried them out for a second time. My friend and I ordered the shrimp ceviche to start. I honestly feel like Picante and I have a "love & hip-hop" relationship. You know? They're always messing up but I love their chorizo (definitely NOT A PUN) so much I keep coming back for more abuse. So here it goes...1 star, maybe now i'll leave them for good. A tale of three tacos and a quesadilla: I ordered 3 tacos and a quesadilla. I specifically asked the person taking my order that I wanted a FLOUR tortilla on my quesadilla (and if you read my previous reviews you'll see why i make that clear. FYI they still won't do it for the tacos so i keep flour tortillas in my house). I also asked her what the quesadilla brings (because I want no confusion) and requested all those items come on the side (to avoid a soggy quesadilla). About 10 minutes later I call again and request a take-out menu be put in my bag, they don't have any but i can find their menus's on grubhub.com and delivery.com, which according to them are the only sites with their menus. I go on grubhub, see only one entry for quesadilla and wait 1 hour for my food. Yay it's here! I open the bag and see this (see pic). Now I"m not Mexican, but I know us Americans eat mostly TexMex food instead of authentic mexican food. But i'm still confused because this is NOT a flour tortilla, so even if I didn't realize they do authentic Mexican, which I'm not sure if this is or isn't, i requested a flour tortilla, ONE big one, not two small corn tortillas. Luckily the tacos were fine and my stomach did not have to start eating itself. This is where it gets interesting, bear with me. I call and tell them my concerns and they respond with "OH then you should have ordered a (name I can't remember)-illa, that's the one you should have told her to put on the orde" Maybe it's the psychologist in me but I immediately see them getting on the offense because I told her that I had asked the person who took my order to tell me exactly what was in a quesadilla to avoid this exact same incident. I say "ok, but if that's what she described and you said she put Flour tortilla on the order that IS STILL NOT what I got." "oh what you all (who is all?) consider quesadillas we call "(the name i can't remember)-illa" Me: Then why is that not on the menu? And why did the person who took my order not make that clear, where is the food I ordered? (Like come on don't ever get in between a woman and her food!) *PUTS me on HOLD* Comes back "So you ordered a quesadilla and you should have ordered a "(the name i can't remember)-illa" or a California quesadilla" we go back and forth for a bit, again with me telling her those options are not available on either menu sites she spoke of *PUTS ME ON HOLD AGAIN for about three minutes) and I"m fuming at this point. The girl who took my order gets on the phone, with an attitude (the prior young lady alluded to the fact that this girl has been messing up) and tries the same line but now she's pointing out i ordered the toppings on the side. I say "Querida (sweetheart in spanish) of course I did or else my quesadilla would have been soggy with all those things on top seeing as how it took you an hour to deliver it (i live less than 12 blocks away)!...i tell her "please remove the charge for the quesadilla from my card and have the delivery guy come pick it up the food. Her: "i don't understand what you're asking" Me (very slowly) "Remove the charge for the quesadilla, idc if you void the transaction and then just charge me for the tacoss, and come get this food, that I still refuse to call a quesadilla" Her: "I don't understand, you don't want the food? We can get it to you, but it won't be for another 20-25 minutes" I know when someone is playing dumb, and all the signs point to this young lady playing booboo the fool. I finally just give in, yes bring me the food WITH EVERYTHING ON THE SIDE, because i do NOT want a soggy quesadilla since I know it will get here in an hour because that is how long you took for the first delivery...Well, one hour later, the food came and it tastes like WACALA nasty. I know i wrote a whole thesis on this but when I have a cheat meal and I take every precaution to make sure it's perfect I don't need someone messing with my food. I know mistakes happen, but there was no mea culpa, there are ways to speak to people without necessarily apologizing. It's unfortunate, the owners of this restaurant have had two other restaurants shut down in the neighborhood and this is their only surviving one (probably because of the chorizo) you would think customer service would be a priority. So if you're going please only order the chorizo tacos and bring your own flour tortillas, cuz they ain't got none, even the one on my quesadilla is whole wheat (blegh). read more

I came to Picante to pick an order that I placed online. I arrived at the door and the server and bartender were super rude since I arrived. I had to greet them first. While waiting for my order, I sat down. Minutes later my order was brought out, dropped to my table and as the bartender walked away, I called out for her to ensure that there was sour cream included in my order. She went behind the bar, made drinks, looked at me and ignored me as she began looking away trying to ignore me. IT WASNT EVEN BUSY. 3-4 people at the bar, who were watching a game. She could've been more gracious handling the situation. I walked to the bar and asked for sour cream, she walks away and prints out a paper and hands it to me and walks away again. The paper was an up-charge, it would've been great if she would've communicated with me verbally. As I waited for her assistance she continued to ignore me. The server walks up to her and I hear her talking about me to the server. I asked the server for a manager and apparently he/she wasn't there.
