I will 1st say that dining in is great! They serve you chips and sauce which tastes delicious. Delivery service sometimes not so great. They always forget to ad my sauce, specifically. It always happens. I always request "Extra red sauce". Just tonight, again, they only added one. I also ordered TWO sodas with my meal & only got one. I also requested something specific with my meal, in the way I wanted it cooked. And again, no love. It feels like they hear & listened to what they want. And delivery on average usually takes up to one hour. And they don't go & back with the right sauce either. Sometimes the girl on the phone when making my delivery sounds rude, it happened at least once. Other times, either the same girl or another will sound okay. One time the delivery guy threw the sauce on the floor outside my apartment after I told him that my order came with the wrong sauce. The tortas were created on the correct kind of roll, they were smothered with pinto beans, had the correct Oaxaca queso at the right amount, slices of avocado, pieces of jalapeño well distributed, the right amount of lettuce. I'm going to keep this plain and simple. Last night I gotten burritos to go. It got the chicken burrito for myself... I was down to the last couple bites and I bit into a wire. A WIRE. It was about an inch and a half long and bent in half. It was as thin as a wire for braces so it could have easily been missed by anyone else. This could have caused serious damage. Came here with a friend who said the drinks are good. We ordered a pitcher of Margaritas (the small one), and I got the "gigante burrito" with carnitas and she got the shrimp quesadilla. The margarita is much to sweet, and only gets sweeter the move you drink it (we had tried to get the red Sangria, and they were out of that - they did give us a sample of the white, and that was simply syrup with some alcohol). The pitcher was $30, even though it was Happy Hour until 10PM (She clearly waited until it was AFTER 10PM to put it on our bill...). The food was fine. My burrito was actually "gigante" and my friend polished off her quesadilla in like 15-20 minutes. The reason why this review is so low is because of our waitress, who REALLY pissed me off. Not only could she not speak enough English to save her life, she refused to try to understand us or have us understand her and just spoke rapid Spanish while we ordered. She also forgot about the drinks, forgot about the food, and also gave me my food packaged up about 30 minutes after I asked her to do so. It was absolutely ridiculous. To top it all of, once we asked for the check (which we got a REALLY chilly look from our waitress for doing by the way - the NERVE of us to want to leave!), the tip was included. At 19%. We were a party of TWO. This was such total baloney that I was about to get all cranky pants until my friend said she's cover and that she felt bad for bringing me here. After reading some favorable reviews of this place on Yelp, I decided to give Picante a try this past Saturday. I ordered three different tacos and put them to the AT taste test. Let me say all three were great but the Al Pastor taco was excellent, the carne asada taco was very good and the pollo taco was average to better than average. The service was average. There were tortilla chips with a slightly tame but delicious green salsa, and there was a fairly impressive horchata. I assume the rest of the aguas fresca are just as good. I got two tacos, al pastor and lengua. You know how some old women will give out hard candy as a treat? My bubbe gave out slices of tongue. I love it. Like a good Jewish boy I associated tongue and other fatty pieces of meat directly with love and affection. This is why when I paid $3 for a taco and got two tortillas and enough seared cubes of beef tongue to stuff both of them, along with the usual taco greens, I immediately felt a deep and abiding love for Picante. The al pastor tacos, grilled spiced pork and pineapple, filled me with a similar but much less Kosher love. If you're not getting drunk here on their large pitcher of margerita then I suggest you brace yourself for some of the worst service. It's been a long time since I've visited Picante, but I started trying to remember the name of this place when I was trying to think of a place to eat uptown. The last time I was here was when my then G/F was living in Harlem and this was one of our go to spots. Picante, the place where the waitresses barely speak English is service is sparse. However, the food is pretty good and the portions are large. I had the burrito here once and it was pretty ho hum. Yes they're large, about the size of a Chipotle burrito. The Torta however became my favorite item on the menu. What's better than chicken, oaxaca cheese, a fried egg, avocados and the rest of the fixings for a great sandwich? All for something less than 10 bucks last I recall. The most outrageous sandwich is all of that with frankfurters on top of the heap. I've got to go back next time I'm in the neighborhood, nothing like a satisfying cheap meal to make me happy. read more

We happened upon this place by chance while strolling around the neighborhood. There aren't a huge number of vegetarian-friendly options on this strip, so were happy to find this joint! They were still serving brunch at 3:30 and the options were many. No free drinks included but I do hear they pour a mean margarita. I had the fish tacos which was incredibly delicious buy way too small for an entree. It may have been on the appetizer menu for all I know. (I'm become blind when I see these on a menu.) On a very lazy Saturday noon, my friend and I got food delivery from Picante, and after 20 minutes of waiting (I live half a mile away from Picante), the food arrived. The food was room temperature, but after microwaving them for 30 seconds, hm...melted cheese is the best thing in life. My friend got a beef steak Quesadilla, I got a Mexican Torta, and we had guacamole to share. Both the Quesadilla and the Torta are decent size and had a good amount of cheese and meat. The guacamole was very chunky, with a lot of onions and tomato and not much avocado. I wish there's also some jalenpeno or hot pepper in it. We asked for extra chips and salsa, and got 2 cups of salsa and chips enough to fill 3 bowls. The guacamole got my friend and I so full we didn't even get dinner later that night. I would order from them again if I'm craving for Mexican food, but know that you're paying for volume not quality. This is the best Mexican restaurant in Harlem. Tasty and cheap tacos, enchiladas, sopa des mariscos, and guacamole. I end up here about once a week. Ask for the salsa verde, it's much better than the red stuff. They've finished the expansion, so the place now includes a nice bar filled with people watching futbol. It's not as racous as it sounds. You could meet someone here and have a conversation and a glass of wine. The menu is a little bit more expensive, but the decor is nicer and the staff is bilingual. Plus, they have fish chalupas, which are just amazing. Vegetarians and the cheaters who eat fish (like me) will have no problem here. They have lots of options. read more

Because Picante is within walking distance from my apartment, I am a regular. However, I am probably not the best person to write a review on the food because I've always only ordered the Carne tacos, but I will continue... Picante has amazing and delicious guacamole; it is very fresh. The carne tacos are unbelievable and for $2.50 each you cannot go wrong. They load the tortillas with beef and add just the right amount of cilantro and onion. Top that off with some of their Picante verde chile (or their red sauce) and you will have a little dance party going on in your mouth! Which goes hand in hand with the dance party they seem to give every night of the week around 10:00 pm. As for their drinks, I would definitely stay away from the sangria. They use boxed wine to make it and for $30 a pitcher, it just is not worth it. Yes, you will be completely out of it after a couple of glasses and if that's the kind of night you are going for, why not? But, if you are looking to savor the taste and relax the sangria is the wrong way to go. You can't go wrong, however, with their happy hour specials- $3 Coronas until 10:00 pm Sundays-Wednesdays is alright by me. The service can definitely be improved. It takes so long sometimes for the waitress to re-take drink orders or to bring "la cuenta", but they are all so nice that it is hard to really care about it. My advice is to ask for the bill almost immediately after getting your food. They can always add drinks to it! Over all, Picante is always such a great and fun time in Harlem. read more

I will start off by saying I live in the neighborhood and have been doing sit-down and take-out from Picante since 2007. Their food has always been very good- tastes fresh and is pretty affordable. They used to offer more items on the menu but every time I go it seems that they continue to remove things and simplify the menu, I can only imagine it might be due to the gentrification going on in the neighborhood. Luckily, if you order it with the original name they can still make the old dishes since they have all the ingredients in stock for dishes they still make (I personally like the tacos, shrimp nachos, and the steak or shrimp a la mexicana). Other than the printed menu no longer being very extensive, the quality of the food has not changed- still very good, except that the green and red sauces have become a lot more dilute :/ Service at the restaurant, on the other hand, has changed a lot- and sadly not for the better. I do not know if it was something they were trying out but once when I went this past summer they had a very loud jazz band playing. Because the place is very small it was almost impossible to have any table talk, even though doors were open because it was summer and the noise was not being contained inside the restaurant. Also, their waiters/waitresses no longer seem to be welcoming but instead act like it is some posh restaurant. For example, I went to eat dinner with my boyfriend this past summer and asked to be seated. Though there were at least two 4-seat tables available, they said the wait would be 45-60 minutes!?!! Then they tried to seat us in a tiny table barely blocking the bathroom door. Being 5'10 and my bf being 6'2, the leg space we needed would mean our chairs would be blocking a bit of the employee entrance to the bar one one side, as well as the bathroom entrance on the other side if we tried to squish into that table. I asked to be seated in one of the other available tables but the waitress said she couldn't because we were only 2 and the other tables could seat 4. I told her there was no way we could fit in the little space that the available 2-person table afforded. I thought it ridiculous to wait 45 minutes for a neighborhood place that I order from* and go to all the time, a place that is not a fancy nor trendy and "poppin' " when there were at least 2 free tables, so I asked to speak to the manager. The "manager" came over and I told him the same thing. He said he would seat us at the table but if a larger party arrived we would have to get up and move. I said okay fine (it would be ridiculous service if they were to interrupt our meal for another party to sit and knew it was not likely that two "large" parties would come while we were eating before other "large" parties vacated). So, for service I would give them a 2 and for food a 4, which is why they get a 3. *Also, delivery often takes quite some time. I find my best bet now is to call in my order and pick it up on the way home. read more

We went for a light lunch on a weekday - which typically qualifies for a quick taste and maybe a light beverage. I'm not a huge fan of Mexican cuisine, but I've had my fair share and know the elements of authentic Mexican food. We both had the house burritos (hers chicken, mine beef), and while they were tasty enough and didn't have any faults, they lacked pizaz - or anything to set them above others. Portions were way too large, and I found the burritos lacked a layered structure and ended up too mixed. I started coming here in 2003 when it was just a tiny hole-in-the-wall. I was in love with one of the waitresses and couldn't cook, so I'd come by every night to profess my love for her and get fed. I'm pretty sure all that money I gave them allowed this place to expand into a larger and more successful restaurant that you now see on Broadway. But like the majority of the authentic, Mexican-owned restaurants in NYC, the success is well-deserved and I'm happy to see their business thriving. This place serves good food and I've never had a bad experience here. Whether simply coming to drink buckets of coronas, or ordering the burritos or tortas, which are what I most recommend here, you'll have a good time and enjoy your food. As with all Mexican places, if you want a great meal, your safest bet is a burrito de pollo or de carnitas, or a torta de milanesa de pollo or carnitas. These are winners every time and Picante has never failed me in this regard. The tacos are good as well, and although it's been a while since I've been here, I always appreciated that they'd bring chips and salsa to the table free of charge (the way it should be!!!). I will concede that the ambiance here is not the most attractive, but it's a real taste of what a restaurant in Oaxaca or Puebla would be like. If you want a classy Mexican dinner, I recommend El Paso on 116th between 2nd and 3rd. read more

This is a great place near City College right on Broadway, it's a small relatively intimate eatery. Good for a casual date, but wow the food takes so long! Not that I have a problem with careful and proper food preparation.. but the complimentary nachos keep things balanced in the meantime. It's a local spot that appeals to both the traditional occupants of the area and the newcomers. My BIG BIG beef with this place is: WHY CAN'T YOU MAKE A DECENT MARGARITA!!?? So many evenings my partner and I have been home and thinking-- "wow, wouldn't it be nice to step out in the neighborhood and have a drink?" Every time we actually do step out, it's to Picante, because as I said, it's the only place of it's kind in our neighborhood. And aside from one evening about a year back when there was a guy behind the bar, the drinks have been utter crap. We've been totally disappointed. Weak, sugary, fake tasting. I'm sure you girls behind the bar can do better! I think they use some kind of pre-fab mix instead of fresh ingredients. Please, Picante, you're a Mexican place, at least get it together with your Margaritas. I've had some breathtaking Margaritas at downtown spots, why can't we have that in Harlem? My first time trying the food at this restaurant/bar, I ordered a chicken burrito for take out. The burrito, while large in size due to the rice, beans, guac, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and chicken chunks, was bland to the taste. Needed way more spices (not just the hot kind) to make it more tasty. Additionally, the burrito was loosely wrapped so that when I attempted to grab it to take a bite, it opened up and about half the contents fell out. Will never return! Terrible service! I came in on Cinco De Mayo to bring in the holiday, and no one was available to seat my party for at least fifteen minutes although there was space. Their staff was taking up two of the only available tables to hang out -- but when they finally noticed me, they moved over and allowed us to squish between them and another table. The waiter sitting next to us felt so bold as to have his elbow on our table for the entirety of our stay, as if we were merely uninvited guests in his home. It took our waiter a long time to notice us sitting -- or at least I thought he was the waiter because a different woman took his place for the rest of our meal. It took 20 minutes for us to get drinks and when I politely asked around the 15 minute mark what was up with them, the new waitress rudely told us that we were gonna have to wait. NO APOLOGY, NOTHING -- she spoke to me like she was scolding a small impatient child, "YOU GUYS ARE GONNA HAVE TO WAIT," rolled her eyes, and walked away. Once drinks and food had arrived, I bit into my chimichangas and it wasn't cooked all the way through ...? Some of the rice was hard while some parts were extra chewy? It tasted like it had been frozen and reheated. I love Picante! I ordered via grubhub one night and had the most fantastic chicken sopes and bistec a la mexicana which was about the same thing as Carne Asada. This has been something I have been looking for in NYC for 2 years so imagine my excitement. The restaurant itself is great too. Actually went in to eat and had a great time. Had the burrito gigante with chicken and it was HUGE and only $9. It was fantastic and came with guacamole. At first I wrote a 4-star review, then I wrote a 5-star review, and now I'm finally writing a final 2-star review. After eating at Picante for well over a year and a half, I have to say the quality of the food has continued to fall. Their guacamole used to be good, but now it's hit or miss. Last time I went, my girlfriend and I ordered the same thing (chicken chimichangas, obviously) and were astounded at how long it took for us to receive our order, given the place was really quiet. To make matters more interesting, our food was lukewarm! Dude, you deep fry chimichangas = they come out super hot. There's no excuse for food to be both served late and cold. I also was lucky enough to get a piece of toothpick in my food, which, while a common mistake, could be very dangerous. But as a first impression, i thought the horchata to be so-so, the huarraches to be rather bland (esp. in comparison to the huarraches you can get in Detroit), the quesadillas were excellent (made with queso fresco i think, so yummy!), the tres leches was tasty as always, but theirs is a little dry somehow. They only serve one salsa with the chips, which is a hot-as-hell salsa verde. My friends loved it, but I'm a heat wimp so I couldn't really enjoy it. The chips themselves as a little weird, and hard to describe. Like, denser chips then anywhere else. Their tequilla menu is killer. Lots to choose from, some of my favorites are on the menu. They also serve mezcal, which I tried for the first time. It was a mind-spinning experience. You should try it at least once. The service was mixed. On one hand, they were prompt with the food, but then they disappeared for most of the dinner. On the other hand, they let us sit there for quite a long time just conversing, and drinking our shots rather slowly. So, mixed bag. I'm pretty happy with the whole experience. My friend just moved to the neighborhood, and 3 of us went out on a Sunday night for drinks not knowing where to go. We passed by Picante and gracais a dios that we did! Happy Hour is from 6-10pm. Our LARGE pitcher of Sangria was $30 and we each got about 3-4 glasses. The guacamole was fresh and very tasty. The tostones were crunchy and good too. What sealed the deal was KARAOKE! At 10pm a man named Gabriel (so sweet) starts it. You just look up the song and lyrics on You Tube, and can sing, sing, sing. For about thirty minutes my friends and I were the only ones singing and literally noone else in the restaurant was paying attention, but we had a BLAST! I did get a cute guys at the bar to sing a bachata song with me, so that was really great! Sometimes the food can take a little long to come out of the kitchen, which is especially noticeable when the restaurant is empty. Other then the Shrimp Burrito (yuck), which I received by mistake I have only ever had the salad there. Now I have never been one to order salad under any circumstances.
