Highway BAGEL Robbery! The cost of 1 bagel in this place is now $1.50! It wasn't all that long ago that Pick a Bagel charged 60 cents for a bagel so that's a 150% increase in a few years. I can buy a pretty good bagel at the supermarket up the block from them for 69 cents and a better one than Pick a Bagel at Tal on First Avenue for $1.10. Fairway a few blocks away has great bagels for 98 cents. Trader Joe's Artisan Bagels are 3 for $1.99 (66 cents each). Guess they have to pay off the renovation cost at their new store. FYI-There address has changed they are now on East 23rd Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue in case you want to go by and get fleeced. read more

I like their bagels but my God is their service awful. Read some other reviews and it's clear by the owner's responses that he has no intention of fixing the service. I've heard workers shout and curse at each other. I've had a worker argue with me when I asked him to toast a bagel (he said it's already hot why do you want it toasted. If you're in customer service "why" isn't your concern just toast the bagel. Toast creates crunch hot is just a temperature FYI.) You can have overpriced food in NYC and get away with it if the quality and service are top notch. You can't overcharge customers and then treat them poorly. The bagels are pretty big. I definitely feel full and it holds me off till lunch time. The prices are reasonable. In the middle of dental school I stopped by to get a quick bite to eat. The Place was clean with many tables to sit inside and eat. The food was prepared quick and the bagel tasted fresh. These bagels are worth every expensive cent, they are absolutely delicious. The bagels are always warm and fresh! And the staff is friendly and quick. Make sure to bring cash if you are only getting a bagel because you have to buy $10 or more in order to use your card. Nice selection of bagels and spreads but nothing really stands out about this bagel place other than it being a convenient stop for food before heading to where I was going. I got the everything bagel toasted with cream cheese and it's your standard ol' everything bagel toasted with cream cheese. The portions are larger than your typical deli bagel and they smother the bagel with too much cream cheese so it keeps you full. I've come here many times in the past and enjoyed my meal although more often than not the cashier gets my order wrong. But today I went with a friend to lunch and not once but twice was our time disturbed by the manager's rude and unprofessional attitude. First, we were waiting in their extremely cramped line and my friend was pushed out of the way because they "almost" knocked a drink over although they weren't close to obstructing anything at all, if anything the manager's nudge would've made them knock something over. Then when we sat down to eat the manager went out of his way to approach me, cut off my conversation, and say "You can't eat outside food here." Although I was just enjoying my packed lunch none of the other employees have ever complained or mentioned anything about prohibiting outside food during the previous times I've dined there, and even that time an employee passed us multiple times and failed to mention anything about this rule. What I found even more absurd is that my friend was dining with food from the establishment, and when I asked "Why?" he simply said "This is a restaurant. Go somewhere else to eat your food." The disrespect from this establishment was preposterous, and it's apparently not uncommon, on another occasion I was told that customers were yelled at for moving empty chairs around to eat lunch together and it was with no courtesy at all either. This "Restaurant" just fails at having any respect for their customers and today I fell victim to prejudice, because behind me was a family eating sandwiches from a different establishment that was never rudely approached and asked to leave by the manager. I grabbed an everything whole wheat. Very chewy and tasty but didn't stand apart from the rest up/down 3rd ave., to me. My taste buds wanted more of that seasoning. I went plain, just toasted, too - to get the truest sense of the bagel. I'll add that is has great plumpness and so full that it's missing a bagel hole...which I missed as well. The bagel price was reasonable at $1.50 but there are catches to that not found (or at least easily found) on the menu. 1) Seems like it's 10 cents to slice and/or toast the bagel. 2) They've removed that credit card minimum people complain about in other reviews but I believe they just added a surcharge to cover it. So my $1.60 bagel had an extra billed 5 cent "surcharge" on top of it. I get owners want to make money and CC fees eat into that but mention it and we're good (I probably needed to hit up the ATM anyway). I give this 4 stars because of the create your own salad option. It's a total of $8.75 for lettuce, 5 mix ins, a choice of meat (grilled chicken, turkey, tuna or shrimp) & dressing. We get take out from this location quite often and we're usually very pleased. Once in a while, the quality of the fish isn't great, but we have never complained as we want to support our neighborhood businesses. However, yesterday we got some white fish salad which was awful. A lot of it was the scrapings from the skin and it was very,very salty. This one time, we brought it back to the store for a replacement or refund. To our surprise, we were accused of leaving out the white fish salad and it was our fault it went bad- no offer to replace it or to give us a refund. I come here often, and the bagels are good and very filling. They also offer tofu cream cheese, which is becoming more accessible in Manhattan. However, it's hard to create a good version of tofu cream cheese that doesn't taste funky. Pick a bagel actually has a pretty good version of tofu spreads, but it doesn't hurt to add tomato and avocado to spice it up.
