Never tried Filipino food until today, and now I can see why everyone has been raving about it. Seems like a mom and pop shop, and the hospitality and service here is great. The employee at the front provided me some samples to taste before I made a decision and she got me hooked! I walked in wanting a two combo plate, but after sampling the pork sisig, adobo chicken, and the breakfast sausage, I had to make it a three combo (ended up with a lot of food leftover). Personally, I really enjoyed the pork sisig: it was juicy and packed a whole bunch of flavor, especially from the vinegar which canceled out the greasiness. The sausage was surprisingly really good, not too sweet and had a nice garlicky flavor. It'd pair well with a bowl of hot rice and a fried egg in the morning. I got a sample of a soup (can't remember the name), but it had a nice sour taste to it as well (not overly sour though). Best Filipino turo-turo (IYKYK) joint I've come across in LA! Best one in the US, come to think of it. Unlike other joints, they seem to limit their daily offerings to about 10-12 dishes. I've had this spot saved for awhile now and just so happened to be in the area. Food: I chose a 2 item plate ($15). I really wanted to like this place but the food was luke warm. The chicken soup was hotter than the chicken adobo. The mung bean was less than luke warm (had to throw it away). Idk maybe I went on a bad day or close to closing where they didn't replenish. And I think I got the bottom of the rice cooker cuz I was chewing on crunchy bits. No pancit . Although, I did go around 2pm. Idk if that has anything to do with anything. Nice lady behind the counter gave me samples as she could tell I'm a novice for Filipino food. She also explained to me the pricing: food by weight is better if you want to try a lot of different things. But if you just want a few item, then get the combo plate which has rice plus 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. items of your choice. So I did it both ways! For one plate, I got steak like beef in gravy, chicken curry, chicken adobo, sausages, and rice. (That was probably over $18 with tax). For another plate, I got 2 item combo (chicken curry and chicken adobo) which would normally come with rice for $10.99 but because I got pancit noodles, it was another $1. She generously put one of my entree items in a separate container (when I expecting her to fill the styrofoam container). The cafeteria style service (a bunch of different entrees in hot trays) allows you to look thru the glass to see what you want to eat. Menu changes with certain items on specific days ie lechon (the roasted pork only on Thurs.) Will come back again for homestyle food! read more

The Lechon is sold by the pound and is an absolutely unctuous mix of moist, savory meat and crispy skin with salty/sweet dipping sauce. Served warm and steaming, it was outstanding! This a hole-in-the-wall Filipino place and it definitely has the Filipino mini buffet. The portions they give you are huge! I got the fried tilapia and they gave me the whole fish on another platter. Instead of rice I got pancit. I'm not sure if you could have gotten pancit and rice, but definitely ask. The eggplant was delicious and was my favorite. The person that rang us up was very nice and explained the sauces to my partner. The food here is so good! If you want Filipino food for lunch a you NEED to eat here. My favorites are the cebuchon on Thursdays (come early! It sells out fast) , lumpia, tortang talong, and pancit. But all the food is delicious. There hasn't been a dish that I didn't like. PYP catered my birthday at work a couple years ago and all my co workers loved the food. The owners are so friendly and sweet. One of the owners who I fondly call Auntie Clare is the sweetest. She treats me and my family like we're a part of hers. When she learned that I liked ampalaya (bittermelon) she told me that she will make ampalaya next time for me and she did! I was so moved by that kind gesture and customer service. The interior is pretty old and doesn't look like much at all, but that's how you know the food is great lol. There were so many different options to choose from and the prices were pretty fair, and the lady serving us was so sweet and helpful. She let us try samples beforehand, which was so nice. I've never tried sisig or longanisa before even though I've always heard about them from my Filipino friends and I'm glad I tried them here because I'm addicted now. I'm a bit late in reviewing Pick Your Plate, a Filipino restaurant whose namesake is exactly as is. A little while back they were available on the food delivery app. I called ahead to check what items were available for their proteins and rice. On that lunch day, they had a the beefsteak and rice available. They did a great job in food safety as the bag and containers were well secured. As for the beefsteak combo, my family member was quite happy with it and said it was tasty. Pick Your Plate is a small, family business in Hawthorne not far from the LA Airport. They are super nice over the phone. Delivery service may or may not be available for lunch locally due to their popularity in catering. I remember calling one afternoon and they were working on a large scale event for a well known university so, it's hit or miss. Overall, I'd love to support this biz but, I'm unable to make the trip to their location and prefer the convenience of the delivery service app when they are showing available on it. TL,DR: 5*s! The folks are really nice, you get HUGE portions, and, most importantly, the food is GREAT! I work about 5 minutes away and frequently pass Pick Your Plate as I'm driving into the office. My lunch buddy is not very adventurous and only eats American, Chinese, and Mexican food, so I've only been able to admire the restaurant from afar. So.... when my lunch buddy takes off for 3 weeks on vacation, I can finally try the places that *I* want to. Today's lunch: Pick Your Plate! This is a small restaurant that, I'm sure, is family owned. The vibe I get is going over to your relatives' house for dinner. I grew up with a lot of Filipino friends, so I'm no stranger to the delicious food. That being said, I didn't recognize a lot of the dishes. The gentleman (Uncle) behind the counter was super nice and explained to me what the different dishes were and even gave me a small cup to try some of the dishes. I decided on the noodles, chicken adobo, and the sisig, although they were running low. So, Uncle says, "i'll make you more," ran back to the kitchen and, 5+ minutes later, returned with a fresh batch for the chafing dish, and, 20 seconds later, was scooped into my container. Wanting to enjoy the afternoon, I sat at a table outside to enjoy the breeze. The food was delicious... the adobo nicely flavored (not too strong) and the sisig was tender, and flavorful, with just the right amount of fat to make me smile. Not surprisingly, I wasn't able to finish the huge plate of food. When I went in to ask for a bag, the lady (Auntie) wanted to make sure I was full and even offered me a bit more food. We had a nice chat and she told me that, other than sisig and adobo, they change their menu items every day. The food was great and, I saw a poster for the lechon belly on Thursday. It was the only thing advertised on a sign.... so, I have to figure that it's gotta be pretty special. I had a great lunch and, as I had mentioned, the super nice Uncle and Auntie and the ever-changing menu really makes it feel like I was eating at a relative's home. Bomb authentic Filipino food at a GREAT price and amazing serving size. Everyone was so kind and helpful and helped me pick out my plate selections. I did take off a star because we went during lunch and a lot of items were already out, like the lumpia, and a couple other dishes. I did snag the last of the pancit and I'm so glad I did - delicious! I was really hoping for the kare kare but they weren't serving that day. Rarely have I been this full. I had SomeSortofPork and SomeKindofChicken with white rice. They were both tasty (though there was a lot of fat on the pork)., Massive portion. The lid on the clam box wouldn't close. Very inexpensive. I think it was $10 for the 2-item plate. People were very friendly. The grandmotherly type kept offering me samples, but I felt bad after getting two free tastes. The interior is dark-ish and a little worn...but you don't expect linens and candelabras here... There was a wall-mounted TV that kept playing real estate ads and political videos from YouTube (I'm not sure what to think about that). The moment I stepped foot in store I was greeted warmly and delightfully treated with the best customer service from the ladies behind the counter. I was immediately offered a huge sample PLATE of various meats which I thought was very generous. Unfortunately, they were out of a lot of things right before close (which is another sign I need to return) but I finally decided on a plate with the Paksiw na Pata and pork adobo.
