I was super happy today to see that Pikunico is still here at the Row. My go to combo is still the classic with the lemon aioli and it did not disappoint! There's a lot to be said about consistency and after all these years, I still love their food. As per usual, the place was clean and cheerfully lit, and the food came out fresh and tasty! I just happened to be short on time today, and my order came up really fast. Now that I'm working in the area more often again, I'll definitely be back!
Da Bomb! Best Japanese fried chicken! If you been to Japan and had the karaage from the small take out places or even the popular Japanese convenience stores this place delivers. So Japanese and so delicious! Perfectly fried to perfection - thighs, wings and tenders. You can make it spicy too with a number of their dipping sauces and fresh slaw and side salads. So Jappy! So Good! Even beer and sake to have your little fried chicken picnic with. Super nice owner and staff. I'd eat here weekly if i was nearby! Cool interior seating and plenty of outdoor seating at ROW DTLA to take your fried Chicken karaage picnic to nosh on!. note serving size leans toward the Japanese sized serving as the quality is high here (organic and fresh) and fried fresh. Perfect not oily or greasy. It's about quality here not quantity. Perfect to fill your belly without guilt feeling like you've eaten too much fried greasy food. Fresh Yuzu lemonades too to freshen up the palette! Prices are very reasonable too. Plenty of parking at ROW parking structure.
Not very good chicken, seems most people eat here be cause they couldn't get into the other restaurants due to wait times. The tenders are a bit overcooked, and service is quite slow due to them having 1 cook for the entire meal service.
Personally, this place was SO HARD to find that I had to check Google Maps and phone-in to ask where in the world is this place?! The worker answered the phone with the greeting, I asked where they are located, and strangely the worker saying "Hello?! Hello?!" and hung up. I would have appreciated if you said you don't understand! I later found out the person didn't speak English well and only understood how to take orders/ speak the menu... because he was the person who was also taking orders and I noticed he was ignoring all the phone calls while I was in line and could tell the limited English when I placed an order with him. This place is definitely understaffed because this man was handling the huge line, but expected to answer phone, and also give the food to customer. I came during lunch hour. The line was very long and the wait for the food long but I was pleased with my food. I ordered the chicken sandwich. The sandwich was nicely made and neatly packed with alfalfa sprouts and pickles. It was delicious. The downside was the experience and the price for this sandwich is pricey! I would only come back if I were in the area.
Pikunico had one of the most unique chicken sandwiches I have ever had! This was an adorable store, with lots of natural lighting and plenty of tables and booths. You order at the cash register and pay before finding a seat. There was a short line on a weekend afternoon, but it moved quickly. The food took awhile to arrive, but this was understandable, as there were only a couple employees. I tried the roasted beets salad, with yuzukosho marinated beets, broccoli, and tamari walnuts. It was a perfectly standard salad, nothing too remarkable. The golden chicken sandwich, on the other hand, was truly memorable and unique. Just the shape of the chicken sandwich was really interesting: it almost had the cylinder shape of a burrito. The sandwich features a perfectly fried chicken on a turmeric bun, with pickled daikon, watercress, alfalfa sprouts, lemon aioli, jalapeño and miso jam. I really enjoyed the freshness of the daikon and sprouts with the juiciness of the chicken. The sandwich was gone way too quickly - every bite was filled with flavor! I can't wait to visit again and try the fried chicken on its own.
My gf and I unexpectedly visited Pikunico for the first time and were impressed! We weren't familiar with the menu because we planned to go to Pane Bianco, but they close earlier than we expected. We ordered the Golden Chicken Sandwich. It was packed with ingredients and bursting with flavor. We both enjoyed the strong pickled/vinegar flavor and agreed that neither of us have had a sandwich that tasted like quite like this. It has a lot going on, but comes together to make it a unique and tasty sandwich. The chicken karaage inside of it was well seasoned, but not particularly special. If not for the $1 up charge, I would've ordered the sandwich spicy. Overall I liked Pikunico, but it does feel a bit expensive.
Such a yummy spot located in the beautiful Row DTLA! I was craving a solid chicken sandwich and Pikunico exceeded my expectations with their spicy golden sandwich! Great amount of heat and the fresh sprouts and pickled veggies inside gave this sandwich so much flavor. The fries were also scrumptious. Excellent customer service. I would most definitely come back to try more off of the menu. Highly recommend!
In downtown LA there is this very hidden, isolated, secluded restaurant that you probably couldn't find with a NASA Interplanetary Navigation System. Yes, that's how "Phantom" Pikunico Japanese restaurant is. Tucked away on South Alameda Street this small cafe / bistro is making unbelievable -Sandwiches, Salads and Rice Bowls. Their entire menu is a "Hit Parade" of unusual yet delicious Asian fare. I had their: * Golden Chicken Sandwich Fried chicken on golden turmeric bun, pickled daikon, watercress, alfalfa sprouts, lemon aioli, jalapeño and miso jam...... that was the most remarkably eccentric sandwich I've ever tasted; and I mean that in the very best of ways! This sandwich had more things going on ingredient wise, so I would definitely call it a - Flavor Bomb". Pikunico was so clean and sterile I was duly impressed. These nice young people working here added to your experience in this small but yet very fantastic hidden gem.
Hidden gem located at the Row DTLA I stopped by here after shopping for some stuff. There is a lot of seating, and the staff was kind and friendly. The decor is so cute, lots of sunlight from the big windows. We got the golden chicken sandwich but made it spicy. The sandwich came out quick, it was nice and hot. The chicken was so crispy and inside was so juicy, it was perfect! it was actually spicy too! Nothing crazy spicy tho. I would def recommend coming here if you are in the area!
Stopped in for a quick dinner and had an overall solid experience. The chicken sandwich was served on fresh bread, with a nicely crispy piece of chicken and well-balanced layers of flavor from the sprouts and pickled vegetables. While the flavors worked well together, I did wish the chicken was more consistent from bite to bite. We also tried the spicy wings, which were enjoyable and had a pleasant crunch, though I wouldn't have minded them cooked just a bit longer. The heat level was there, but they could have benefited from a bit more depth of flavor. Overall, this is a decent spot offering reasonably priced food and a satisfying meal.
Super flavorful and crispy chicken sandwich! I typically always choose the spicy option if it's available, and while I enjoyed the spicy version of the Golden Chicken Sandwich I think it would have been plenty flavorful getting it the regular way. The pickled radish and micro greens help cut the fried chicken. Friendly, quick staff and the tables are small but enough for a quick bite like this. Would come again :)
The chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and I really liked the addition of alfalfa sprouts and these sour pickles. It gave the sandwich a nice twist!! The location is also very convenient since there's a big parking structure behind it with 2 hours free parking, and the spot itself was clean and quiet. I think it's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

A cool Japanese spot in Row DTLA. My partner ordered the golden chicken sandwich, which unfortunately he was not impressed with. He said the chicken was dry and didn't have much flavor. It needed some more sauce to give it more kick. I ordered the fried kabocha bowl which was very tasty. The kabocha was crispy and tasty, the rice had a wonderful ginger taste and egg was flavorful too. I also ordered the yuzu lemonade which was delightful. There wasn't much service as you order at the register and they just bring out your food. But the cashier was nice and took the time to answer our questions and give us recommendations. The spot was very beautiful, decorated warm and comfy like. Overall I enjoyed this spot but it could have been a bit more flavorful and given some more love to really juice it up a bit. read more
Pretty good spot! Ordered the spicy sandwich and it wasn't really spicy. It had great flavor still. Tried the salmon onigiri and it was okay, probably wouldn't order this again. It wasn't too crowded on a Saturday afternoon so we got our food pretty fast. There's a lot of seating inside and out. Some of the best fried chicken you will find. Found this place years ago from a Buzzfeed video and still think it has some of the best chicken. Family basket is the way to go. We got it to share between two (even though it feeds up to 4) - we devoured it. 1 pound of tenders, some slaw, two onigiri, fries, and pickles ... what more could you want? We came on the weekend, and parking was cheap at the Row (a surprise for DTLA). Must-stop whenever we're in the area. read more

Food: Golden Chicken Sandwich with fried chicken on golden tumeric bun, pickled daikon, watercress, alfalfa sprouts, lemon aoli, jalapeno and miso jam was SUPERB!!! The chicken had the tasty brown meat (not that healthy dry white meat) and the bun was perfectly crispy on the outside, but soft on in the side smothered in that magical jalapeno & miso jam!!! Service: freshly, made-to-order; good things come to those who wait; owner/servers are all very nice Design: interiors is simple, modern with white walls and ceiling with a touch of light brown wooden wainscott, tables, trellis and rope light fixtures; counter seating against the window, communal bench seating in the middle, surrounded by 2 & 4-top tables against the wall Overall: if you want great chicken sandwiches, make sure you get here before the lunch rush, which should be a good indicator of how AMAZING this place is!!! read more
I'm kinda leaning toward 3.5 stars on this. It's good for sure but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit on my own. My partner and I stopped by on a Monday around 2:30 PM and there was no wait. The staff member who helped us was very friendly, and we had a nice bit of small talk. We ordered their classic Golden Chicken sandwich to-go and shared it. While the chicken was juicy and crispy even after bringing it home, I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped (probably because I'm not a big fan of watercress) I would have preferred it without it but that's just a personal preference. That said, the sandwich was still satisfying, and I have no doubt the rest of their menu is just as solid. The interior was spacious and well-maintained and our order was ready within minutes. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, but not necessarily a place I'd go out of my way for. read more

This is inside The Row, and parking in the garage is free for 2 hrs. We came for lunch on a Sunday, and there was plenty of indoor seating. It's very casual, and it does feel like you're having a picnic with the bench/table seatings. We ordered the following: Golden Chicken Sandwich - we got this spicy for $1 extra, and this sandwich was the bomb. The flavor of the fried chicken was seasoned really well, and the alfalfa sprouts completes this perfect sandwich. The pickled peppers bring the heat for sure, and I recommend it. This sandwich was easy to eat, and the bread on this was really soft and not thick, making it not messy and great to eat. Yaki Imo - if you like Japanese sweet potato and ume, you'll like this. Salmon Onigiri - the rice is made with ginger and soy sauce, and it has flaky salmon on the inside. This was good, and I think I'd just stick to the Ginger Onigiri, since the rice mixture itself has already really good flavor. The service was very nice and helpful. This would be a place I'd be a regular at for the sandwich. read more

Solid as a rock 4 out of 5. I got the chicken wings order which started at $11 and ended with $15 after tax and tip. The wings: Splendidly fried. Not a lick of seasoning on the chicken. The ponzu sauce did exactly what it needed to do! Overall: Yumzers!!!! Service: friendly and efficient. read more

Updating my review and officially bumping them up to 4 stars! I finally got around to trying their Veggie Curry Bowl and mmm-mMM-MMM! It's so scrumptious. The curry itself is super fragrant, rich, and homey. Was honestly surprised by how much I loved it. It's served with seasonal roasted veggies and a seasoned egg with a perfectly jammy yolk. Without a doubt, this is my new go-to here at Pikunico. If you're looking for a bit more protein, you might want to opt for one of their other bowls. Their Chicken & Chicken and Ginger Rice Bowl is a solid option! read more

We found Pikunico during one of our visits to Smorgasburg and made a note to try it the next time we shopped at The ROW. Unfortunately, this day was probably the worst day to choose. It was WCC and it seemed that a lot of other people had the same idea for lunch. There were about 6 people ahead of us when we got in line and still some available seating, so we weren't too concerned. But after placing our order, it felt like the staff and kitchen lost control. The line kept growing until it wrapped around the back of the room, the woman in charge who was taking orders went to the kitchen to help, which then left one of the two women (who were taking food out to tables) to handle the long line of customers while the other tried to pack orders and fill drinks. It was uncontrollable chaos as the order tickets piled on top of each other on the counter. The small space was at capacity with several people standing outside by the pick-up window waiting for their orders. Every order was being packed to-go as numbers were being yelled out for people to get their food. We were actually pretty fortunate for our number to be called after 30 minutes. Unfortunately, our food was disappointing. Small portions and the presentation was quite messy. My daughter's chicken tenders were still pink inside. The fingerling fries were barely fried. Sauces were missing so I had to walk through the crowded room again. It then took some time to get someone to help. The staff stayed calm and tried their best to get through the chaos, so most of the stars in this review is for that, but it was not the experience we anticipated. Located near the old American Apparel, Pikunico is a cute small restaurant with fried chicken and chicken sandwiches. They also have salads and other things but tbh I had tunnel vision for the chicken lol Their chicken is really great! Not too oily, and yet super crunchy. I also got their house Yuzu Lemonade which was perfectly tangy. The prices are reasonable and the restaurant is near a bunch of shops so you can walk around once you're done eating. Located in the Row, Pikunico is a cute restaurant with rice balls, fried chicken, salads, and baked goods. I tried the Pikunico Bowl, which included seasoned rice, fried chicken, spinach leaves, pickled radish, pickles, and pickled peppers. The mixture of all of them was really tasty, especially when you paired the fried chicken with a pickled veggie. The rice was surprisingly good -- not sure what they seasoned it with but it was earthy and slightly sweet. Ambiance is cute but casual, large picnic tables for big groups and smaller tables for more intimate seating. read more

My kids and I love Pikunico very much. The food is amazing! The Kids love the soup, rice balls and tenders and the miso cookies! I am truly grateful to Picnico because I can safely feed my children gluten-free meals made from scratch without any food additives. thank you. There was barely anyone there since it was a Wednesday evening. The staff here are nice. Food took about 15-20 minutes to come out. They have a water dispenser on the right side of the cashier. They have cute seating booths and one long table for larger parties. Golden Chicken Sandwich ($15.50): This was so disappointing. All the pictures show a huge, thick, juicy piece of chicken katsu. What I got was the thin katsu you usually get in bentos. It was mostly batter and barely any chicken. The golden tumeric bun was more like a hard baguette. I felt like the alfalfa sprouts were the dominating taste so no flavors really came through. Mixed Fried Chicken ($12): This comes with 1 thigh, 1 wing, and 2 tenders. They were bland to me. The 3 sauces (lemon aioli, parsley sesame, daikon ponzu oroshi) they gave us were better than the chicken so we had to dunk them in the sauces quite heavily. My favorite sauce was the parsley sesame. The lemon flavor wasn't strong so the lemon aioli just tasted liked Kewpie mayo to me. Yaki Imo ($6.50): Good but a bit too soft. The Ume creme fraiche is tangy and pairs well with the sweet potatoes. read more

More of a 3.5 rating but will bump up for the great service. I was helped by a nice person named Nellie(sp?) who was very informative and mindful of my dairy restriction. I ended up getting the veggie curry bc of the glowing reviews but was pretty disappointed:( It was very salty and lacked the earthy curry taste I'm used to with Japanese curry. And honestly the contents just didn't make much sense. It all tasted great individually but didn't complement each other. The ambiance is nice though. Price was fair. read more
I've been on a chicken sandwich kick lately and was so excited to try this one because of the photos on social media. Pictures can be very deceiving at times, as I was expecting a much larger sandwich. It came out pretty small, and while I try not to complain about pricing because times are tough, the food didn't seem to reflect the price very well. The chicken itself is delicious, juicy, and tender. I love vegetables, but the sprouts in the sandwich was overpowering all the other components, that it became a little unpleasant to eat. The sprouts are quite literally 50% of the sandwich itself. I would recommend getting the chicken on its own though! read more

7.5/10 food - chicken was super moist & delicious. loved the texture & flavor of the golden chicken sandwich, but it had a bit of an odd aftertaste. the size is good to hold you over, but you will probably be hungry later so order more 7.5/10 service - nothing crazy! they were nice. it's a casual spot, order up front & the food will be brought to your table inside 8/10 ambiance - small spot off to the corner of row. cute interior, loved the vibe & decorations. again, a causal spot for a quick bite :) i would go back again! read more
A great fast-casual option in The Row, Pikunico worth the journey to find it. The parking is free for the first two hours, and it feels like food you'd find at a picnic. It has a pretty easily digestible menu, separated into sandwich vs fried chicken plates vs bowls vs sides. For a fried chicken place, they do have a few vegetarian entrees, which is nice if you're going with a group. You order at the counter and get a number, and then you can choose your indoor or outdoor table based on what's open. When we went for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon, it was pretty empty at The Row. It all comes out in one unlabeled bag, which is a little difficult when you have a big group ordering all at once. The classic fried chicken thighs tasted great in the moment, but it was a bit too heavy for me after because I don't usually eat fried food. I was relieved that the chicken thighs were boneless because it made it easier to eat, and it was still very juicy, tender, and flavorful. The white lemon aioli and green parsley sesame sauce that came with the fried chicken were my favorite of the sauces. The chicken egg drop soup ($5.50) is good if you like bland soups, which is great if you're hungover or sick, but I thought it was better after I added the remainder of my parsley sesame sauce that came with my chicken. It's pretty small and it is made up of chicken broth, chicken cubes with the skin on, egg, and green onion. After tax & tip, it came out to ~$21/person. read more

Ordered the chicken sandwich ($15.50), with a side of the yaki imo (sweet potato - $6.5). Even at 2pm lunch on Saturday, it was about a 30 min wait for the food after we ordered. But there was a marketplace event so maybe there were more customers than usual. Overall, I thought it was just okay. I appreciated the sprouts in the sandwich but there was also a sweet sauce that I don't think went well together. The sweet potato was good as you would expect and the creme fraiche was a nice add but not necessarily something I would get again or come back for. read more

My friend and I were at the holiday market at ROW DTLA over the weekend and decided to have a bite at Pikunico. Now if you don't know ROW DTLA, it's like it's own little world. You need to park in their giant parking structure and then make your way to the shops and restaurants. Parking has always been free when I've gone, but apparently is chargeable depending how long you're there. Pikunico is quite possibly the best fast casual restaurant option in the ROW. Their focus is Japanese fried chicken so you best believe we got some when we popped in. We went with both the basket of mixed karage (1 thigh, 1 wing and 2 tenders) and also the Golden Chicken Sandwich packed with karage plus a side of yaki imo. The sandwich was on a golden turmeric bun and then included pickled daikon, watercress, alfalfa sprouts, lemon aioli, jalapeño and miso jam. If that sounds like a lot - it was. My friend and I agreed that the daikon could have been left off. There was a huge amount of alfalfa sprouts so I would also cut that in half. The chicken itself was delicious and the miso jalapeño jam was interesting. I'm torn on it. I loved some elements but something just didn't click overall. I love chicken sandwiches and this one was pretty good, I just wish it would have some slight edits . The mixed fried chicken was a pretty large meal for $12. A great value imho. Crisp skin, juicy chicken, it was just delectable. It came with three sauces: daikon ponzu oroshi, lemon aioli, parsley sesame sauce. We loved all three but my favorite was the lemon aioli. I ended up dipping my sandwich in it, as well. You MUST get the Yaki Imo. For $5.50 you get a good portion of baked Japanese sweet potatoes with crème fraîche & pickled jalapeño. I had one bite and was in heaven. That bit of cream on top of the baked goodness....And the potatoes having the perfect consistency with a creamy inner texture to them...just perfection. I vow to get the Yaki Imo every.single.time I'm at the ROW. Even if I'm not hungry, even if I just filled myself to the gills at Smorgasburg, even if I have just six dollars in my pocket. I have a wheat allergy so I really appreciate good GF food. I like how chill the vibe is inside Pikunico and that the ROW has free two hour parking. I've been here a few times and all have been good experiences. My go to order from Pikunico is the Pikunico bowl - chicken tenders are always fresh, the ginger rice is so good, and the pickles add a nice touch to the bowl. I've tried it spicy as an upgrade but I think I prefer the regular version of the bowl with the lemon aioli. The Yaki Imo (also pictured), was really good but I didn't know when ordering that the sweet potato would be a mushy texture. I still enjoyed it but not sure I would order it again b/c I like baking sweet potato at home. The flourless brownie is delicious! The texture and flavor is perfect but I wish there was a version w/o walnuts because I'm allergic to walnuts as well and ate around them. I used to love walnuts, especially in brownies, before developing an allergy to them :'( anyway I think this flourless brownie makes for a nice little treat after a good meal! read more
One of many hidden gems of LA, this airy, modern eatery specializes in the most DELICIOUS Japanese-style fried chicken I have ever had the pleasure of sinking my teeth into! The presentation is enticing. And from the moment you take that very first bite, the sound of that crunch is music to your ears. The texture is crisp but not over-breaded, and the chicken is tender, moist, and tasty. We went with the spicy option, and the chili is spot on. The pickles and dipping sauce on the side serve to cool down your palate, and boy, that they did! The eating is messy as you can see by my chili-greased hands, but that's all part of the fun, and it literally is finger-licking good! read more

Great spot for a delicious and quick lunch! It's so cute inside and the service is very friendly. I got the sandwich which was pretty large, I couldn't even finish it all. The chicken was perfectly crisp and savory. The accompaniments on the sandwich went with the chicken so well and balanced everything out. My friend got the chicken tenders which looked amazing - came with a lot for the price! The fries were tasty as well with the ranch. Obsessed with the yuzu-ade, super refreshing! read more
A must visit anytime I'm in LA/nearby in Little Tokyo. Chef Kuniko Yagi has created something very special at Pikunico and I'm excited to visit every time. The focus is fast casual Japanese fried chicken, and is made gluten free. The chicken is fresh and light even though it's fried, which is very difficult to achieve. I always get the mixed basket which includes both light and dark meat as well as a wing and I have to make it spicy! The texture and flavor is just out of this world. The sides are perfect accompaniments as well--the fingerling fries with negi salt have such a unique umami flavor and the ginger onigiri is savory and yet still refreshing. I'm not sure exactly what sauces come with the chicken and sides, but they get finished every time, they are the perfect pairing. The interior is light and airy, and cultivates a laidback atmosphere. The service has been fantastic every time I've gone, and I've even had the pleasure of getting to see Chef Yagi which was very exciting for me personally. Pikunico is playful and fun, and strives for a picnic experience, which it achieves all while elevating Japanese classics. read more

saw this on a worth it video and had to try. the flavors of the sandwich is something I never tasted before- in a very good way. Usually fried chicken is on the heavier side but this was light and the vegetables in it balanced everything well. Definitely recommend you try!! read more

Their chicken sandwich is 3 out of 5 ( it's the regular deep fried but the add on just don't help the flavor at all) Their egg drop chicken soup is 2 out of 5 ( the y is fried and then dropped into the soup, the broth then is pretty much flavorless aside the oil the add that is too much) read more
