The service was solid, but the food was inconsistent. The lobster rangoon appetizer was delicious. Disappointed to find that the regular fish and chips ($29) was the same size portion as the kids fish and chips ($16)--the only difference was the side of coleslaw, which was terrible and certainly not worth the $13 (!!!) price difference. The lobster risotto from the special had nice flavor, but barely a trace of lobster meat and was crunchy, and the Brussels sprouts boiled and bland, but the bass was cooked well in a delicious sauce. I really love the vibe at the Pilot House. And I also like the food. So much better than their competition restaurant across the way. Chillin' in the Adirondack chairs while listening to live music. What's not to like? I highly recommend the sweet potato fries, the clams casino, the lobster grilled cheese, and seafood pot pie. Service was great and the well trained staff appear to be exceptionally hard workers. It's always super busy, but the wait is never too long. read more

Great table, very nice server named Sara. Food was amazing. Little necks were so sweet and so fresh! Stuffed Portuguese cod was scrumptious. The Pilot House serves up a large helping of fried or broiled seafood at a reasonable price. Just don't expect fine dining and you should have a fine meal. It's not going to be the best seafood you ever had, but you probably realized that when you walked in. I tried to power through the probably 1# of coleslaw but failed spectacularly at that feat of strength. However, just like the 3-star rating states: this place is "A-Okay" and that is exactly how I feel about our experience. It didn't do any one thing spectacularly well, but nothing was poorly executed or inedible (which is not always the case with these types of seafood places). Everything was in line with the price and quality I would expect at a fried or plattered seafood place. The views (we were there at sunset) are pretty fantastic as well. If you want a picturesque view while you eat then you should be pleased with your options as long as you don't go peak season + peak hours. Our food was up pretty quickly and we were there at a time where it was self-service so we didn't have to interact with any hostesses or waitstaff. The Pilot House definitely satisfied a need we had upon arriving in the area for our summer vacation - a quick, enjoyable seafood dinner that we were able to waltz into in casual clothes and be on our way less than 45 minutes later. Made the wrong decision by trying something new across the harbor rather than sticking with what you know. The food was fresh but not well prepared. Lobster sandwich should have raised a flag. Lobster server on 1.5" Texas toast style bread. Even with "large" almost $50 market price sandwich, it was overpriced and over powered by the bread. Cold fries accompanied this mess. The clam plate had maybe a dozen clams, I'm being generous here. I can't imagine what the clam roll looks like. They were not properly breaded as the breading just fell off at you put your fork into them. Anyways a complete disappointment. $50pp bill with tip, no drinks or dessert, deserves better even on the cape during tourist season. Friendly service was the only shining star. read more

I chose this place because of the innovative menu. It's not just another clone of the standard New England seafood fare. It has those of course but some unique items too. Like the Nori Sushi Tacos which I got. The shell is a battered, deep-fried nori sheet, and the fillings are what you'd find in a Japanese tuna maki roll: tuna, sushi rice, mango, avocado, sesame, tobiko, etc. It worked. They really did find a way to simulate a crunchy taco shell with the fried nori. The serving is 2 tacos, and the tuna portion was appropriately sized for the shells and I thought priced reasonably at $19. I have a few complaints though: there was too much rice inside. Maybe a little is ok but it really added nothing to the overall dish. Maybe add some greens instead: something assertive like arugula or watercress? And also, the plate just just the tacos. Some sides would be appreciated and they don't have to be expensive ingredients: to keep with the Japanese theme maybe a small seaweed salad and some spicy rice chips? In the bar area some interesting cocktails. I'm always up for anything with mezcal so I had a "Some Like It Hot": spicy concoction that included passionfruit and tamarind, chili syrup, and a giant stick of jicama. Silly but gave me something to snack on while waiting for the entree. Wine list looked pretty standard. I'm not a beer drinker but the list looked pretty outdated to me: very heavy on the standard big American brands and just a couple in the "craft" category. I also ordered a stuffed quahog to go, for later. Admittedly I don't have lot to compare it with but it seemed good enough. A spicy bread-based stuffing with linguica and discernible bits of chopped clam - though there should have been more. Well-browned under the broiler. But $8 for a single clam? In retrospect that seems outrageous and now I'm feeling annoyed with myself for getting it, and annoyed with them for charging it. Service was pretty slow all around. From getting the menu, to ordering, getting my drink, and finally the entree, everything took longer that it should. So that when the waitperson came with the check I had my credit card ready for her so as to avoid and more delays. But slowness is a fault of the management; not the waitpeople. 2 years ago I'd have awarded 3 stars for this many flaws even though minor. Adjusting for the overall decline in restaurant experience everywhere, I'm generously giving this 4 stars and would probably go back. read more

The new husband and I are back to Yelp! We started off our honeymoon at The Pilot house, which had great food and service. We sat outside since it was a beautiful evening, but had to deal with some loud kids, which was a negative. But we started off with beer and a passion fruit mojito, both of which we recommend. We had mussels as an app which I forgot to take a pic of, which were good. Then we had the fisherman's platter and grilled swordfish, respectfully. My swordfish was to die for-- so buttery and creamy. The husband loved his platter, and I have to say, I am not a scallop fan but I liked their fried scallops! Nice light batter, not too heavy. We would recommend-- lots of outdoor seating, but the atmosphere didn't exactly match the higher dinner prices so just something to be aware of. read more

Another year, another 5-star review. Took my mom here for a belated Mother's Day lunch and we had a great time. Server (I forgot her name - so sorry!) and the red headed hostess were great! We hardly had to wait for a spot on their beautiful patio. I had a watermelon jalepeno marg (delicious, if small) and mom a Pinot Grigio. Calamari was on point (seriously, order it) and our entrees were delicious. Server did not miss a beat. Prices were fair, we weren't rushed, and as always, I will return. Wow, remarkably bad experience at the Pilot House tonight, went there with a large group to celebrate our friend's birthday. Waitress initially quite attentive. Ordered drinks and apps. Finished those and then long wait to place our orders. That was fine, great to be together. Eventually dinners came out for half of the party. We were told the rest would be right up. After another 15-20 minutes, no waitress in sight, we asked the hostess where the rest of our dinners were. Those orders hadn't been processed. The people who had received their food, the food was going cold. The outstanding orders were salads and fried seafood. Clearly the kitchen messed up. They did comp some of our party for this disaster, but not going back there anytime soon. read more

We had a rare perfect dinner experience here at the Pilot House last evening. We were greeted warmly, shown to a water view table for 4 promptly, and experienced great service for the rest of the meal. Wellfleet oysters, scallops, halibut and swordfish were all perfect quality and deftly cooked. We found the wines by the glass reasonably priced. The staff is always friendly, the bartenders work hard on busy nights but they always make sure they get to you in a timely manner, and the Sunset are just beautiful. I recently went to Pilot House Restaurant & Lounge at the insistence of a coworker because I had told him that my husband had been there for a dinner meeting and had terrible food and service and he said I should try it again. We decided to give it another try and went in for a quick dinner. The staff could not have been nicer to us. We got excellent service from the hostess and the waitress. A great start. We ordered boneless buffalo wings, a favorite of ours, and they turned out to be those flattened, ready-to-fry- chicken tenders (I call them chicken thumbs) that invariably have that tough piece of tendon running through them. Ugh. Moving on, I ordered baked stuffed shrimp with pasta salad and cole slaw. My husband ordered a statler chicken breast that had artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, capers and lemon pan jus. The food arrived in short order and all I can say is that I have never had 4 shrimp that were as tough and rubbery as these. They had placed them in a cocotte and had fired them in a salamander, I would guess, which also heated up that cocotte until it was searingly hot. If I were the cook, I would have removed them from the cocotte and placed them on a plate to stop the cooking but alas, they did not. Add to that a tasteless stuffing, rolled into something that resembled a clamcake and placed under the upturned tail and you have a dry, rubbery mess. If that wasn't bad enough, the cocotte was a mess from the spilled juices, etc., that had baked onto the dish. To top it off, they jammed the pasta salad and cole slaw onto the same oval plate that held the blazing cocotte so that each time you took a forkful, the whole dish rattled from the uneven plating. What a mess! My husband reported that the statler chicken could possibly have been dryer if it had been cooked yesterday and reheated, but if this was freshly cooked, it was way overdone. I must say that as we went out the door, hubby said to me, "THAT is why I didn't want to come to this restaurant again", and he was right. Dreadful! read more

Took recommendation from a friend and had dinner at the Pilot House. We sat at the bar and was served by a very friendly local "Tim". Our cocktails were really good and we were served ice water up front. Both the clam chowd'a & Lobst'a bisque was good ... not spectacular though. Wife had the stuffed shrimp which had a full plate of very large shrimp with a wonderful stuffing m, fresh cut squash and mashed potatoes. I had the Seafood Rockefeller that large shrimp, muscles, lots of Lobst'a meat, crab ravioli in an amazing oyster mushroom crème sauce. The portion was ridiculously large which made this hungry guy very happy. The atmosphere was very local/touristy with a view of the canal. I noticed the manager constantly walking around the restaurant both the indoor and outdoor dining areas making sure that things flowed smoothly. I'd highly recommend the Pilot House if you're in the area. Reservations only for parties if 6 or more. read more

black and brown beware! went for drinks after work today. we were two people of color and one white woman.We where asked more than once if we were going to order food to sit at a table even after we ordered dinner for all 3 people at the table plus two drink each we were rushed thru our meal and when the waitress brought us our 3rd round of drink she told us the manager wanted us to know there was a 5 drink maximum even tho most of the all white table were well past their 5th drink limit. wouldn't recommend and will never return. read more

We were in search of a lobster roll, and the seafood place next door isn't what we wanted (ie not a restaurant), so we walked over to the Pilot House, because we were tired and hungry; when looking for places to eat, had not been excited by the mixed reviews on Yelp re: the Pilot House. And yet we had the best fish meal here. The seafood platter, $40, is for two people. It was served hot, the sweet potato fries are really good, the coleslaw is creamy, the shrimp and scallops sweet (and the scallops not tiny), the clams not too chewy. The food was really good and didn't think the prices were too high. Too bad the server had an attitude-- remember us? The table that asked for an extra plate for sharing the seafood platter? Why was that a big deal? Why the snark? Here's to hoping the food remains as good as it is, because it was a delicious meal, that exceeded expectations. Here's to hoping that next summer they have more pleasant staff. read more

The food at the Pilot House is terrific. We had their clam chowder and it was the most authentic, delicious New England clam chowder we've EVER had in a commercial venue. We love most chowder type soups and we even love mist of today's commercial chowder, but this was exceptional. It was just thick enough. Obviously made fto scratch without using a restaurant base that many places start with. The clam flavor was strong, but not too strong. The chowder was loaded with minced quahogs and the red bliss potatoes were cooked perfectly. There was an under urgent of buttery flavor. I've been told that I make a great chowder, but the Pilot House could easily take away my title. We also had the seafood pie which was more of a stew with a puff pastry addition. This is not a criticism just an alert if you're thinking traditional pie. This was also cooked from scratch and did not taste like a commercial Newburg sauce. The "broth" was incredible and tasted more like a true lobster bisque. It was loaded with scallops and lobster. We ordered the lobster quesadilla which was on special. Again perfection. LOADED with lobster and kept fairly simple which only made the lobster stand out more. Then we had the tuna wonton nachos which were generous and delicious. The ONlY criticism is that there was a little too much sauce on the nachos which made them a little too salty, but not offensive. This restaurant obviously has a chef that loves food and knows how too cook from scratch. We forgot to take a picture of the chowder. Our server, Ashley was efficient, informative and very pleasant.
