26April17 @ 11:45am. Short line when we arrived. Ordering is at the counter and you are asked to bus your table. All the inside the building tables were full so we sat at the bar stools but a two top opened before we got our food so we moved. There were seats open in the covered picnic area too. We decided on the Pine State Club and the Chatfield but when we got to the counter to order they told us they were out of the club so we had to figure out what to get in place of the club and we selected the Reggie. Couldn't they put it up on the big menu that they were out of that menu item. Geez. The Reggie and the Chatfield are exactly the same except the Reggie is with gravy and the Chatfield is with apple butter. The gravy is definitely the way to go. The apple butter just didn't make the cut as a complement to the chicken and bacon. The biscuits were nice and light and fluffy. The bacon gave a nice extra crunch and taste to the whole thing. The cheese was melts and ran into the gravy a bit which is a good thing. The gravy made the Reggie with good creaminess. The service was cordial. The food came out quickly and was still warm. At $9 it is expensive but it's tasty and at least it's not $12 or $14 like the Reuben at McMenamins in Sherwood. The music was good and not too loud. We would return. read more

Next time I'll ask for extra gravy but otherwise this place was so delicious. We got there before there was a line so we had no wait (closer to 8am I believe) and I ordered the Reggie Deluxe which was amazing. The chicken was so moist and the gravy was yummy but the biscuit is so big I needed a tad more gravy. I also got the gourmet chocolate milk which probably wasn't great for the calorie count but was delicious. read more

My friends and I visited Portland on vacation and this was my favorite restaurant. Brews and biscuits and gravy, how can you go wrong?! We(my spouse and I) work in the industry so we rarely get the chance to go experience a morning out. When we do I love to enjoy a mimosa, something sweet and something savory. I make it the meal most people go out to dinner for, I'm all in. I was excited to try Pine State, I'm new to Portland so I hadn't been to the original in NE. We are early eaters and we arrived shortly after they opened. I was surprised by the size, but there were open tables so I wasn't concerned. I quickly read over the menu and made a selection. (We felt a little rushed to order as there quickly became a line forming behind us, out the door.) I love bacon but not on things, so I requested to substitute an egg for the bacon on the Reggie. Seemed reasonable: protein for protein(eggs are cheaper than bacon). Instead the cashier told me she'd charge me a dollar more for the Reggie Deluxe and just leave off the bacon. She let me know that is how I should order it next time. This interaction lit a fire inside me, I calmly said fine. My spouse ordered the biscuit and gravy(one biscuit on a 10" plate, uncut smothered in gravy to the edge), also disappointing. I preceded to order my son's meal, despite the fact they lack any sort of Children's Menu. I was so off put, I skipped my usual mimosa. The chicken was delicious. The self serve coffee was hot(reason for the two stars). The biscuits reminded me of Grandy's(semi-fast food) and the gravy was just sweet enough to make it kinda gross. No one checked on us once they dropped the food off at our table. They also lack any space to changing station in either restroom. We left bummed that this was how we were starting our day. The food here is good. However, the overall dining experience is a big let down. First, the big line you need to wait in to order. I'm not a fan of the ordering food at the counter and get a number style of food delivery, but I can manage. What I don't want to deal with is a 45 minute wait at the table after the wait to order. Sorry, that's way too long. My dining companion tipped them 20%, a lot for counter service IMO, and requested a mimosa "light on the OJ." Unfortunately, they gave him a standard one, mostly OJ. The second one, which he had preordered and after he reiterated the "light on the OJ" thing, was given to him in a tiny glass, with less OJ, but with about two shots worth of liquid. The food here is fantastic, of course. However the speed the food comes out is painfully slow. I came here--not during busy hour--and we waited patiently for over 30 minutes for a 2 plates. I've came to pine state before and know that the food takes a little time, especially since they are a very popular restaurant. So I know my rating might shock a lot of people, but I had a lot of hype for this place. Now I will preface this by saying I am a vegetarian, as far as the menu goes, not too many options...as in about 2 when it comes to the biscuit sandwiches. I knew that going in, and was perfectly ok with it since my husband also really wanted to check it out and he is a meat eater. Now I will start off with saying the Biscuits are really good, but my sandwich came out cold, maybe they were waiting for my husbands meat sandwich to be ready I'm not too sure, but it was cold. I only got 2 eggs, cheese, and veg gravy on my sandwich. So not only was it cold, but they forgot my cheese. They also forgot my husbands cheese as well. Now I will say the best part of the meal was the hash browns, they were actually hot and fantastic! So definitely order them if you go! The atmosphere in their was really awesome as well it was super crowded in there despite all of the people constantly coming in, we were able to find a seat no problem! All in all I had a lot of high hopes and I wasn't blown away. read more

I've driven by this place many times and decided to go in on a Monday around noon. A long line greeted us, but it went quickly and gave me a chance to look over the menu. I ordered the Reggie Deluxe and the bf ordered the Moneyball, each with a coffee. There were two choices for full caf coffee, which I appreciated. Then we sat and waited. And waited. We saw people who were behind us in line sit down. We waited some more. The other people got their food first, and it was the same as ours. At this point, we had been waiting for 45 minutes. I went and spoke to the food runner, inquired about our food, and was told "it should be out soon." No acknowledgment of how long it was taking, or if they misplaced our order, or even a half-assed apology. It was about an hour until we got our food. It was tasty and filling. The same woman I spoke with then delivered our food. Again, no smile or apology. The bf went and spoke with a manager afterwards. Pretty standard communication. Now, I've worked in food service for 7 years, so we tipped 20% when we paid. I wish we hadn't given the service. Probably will not return. read more

Best biscuits ever! We got the reggie with sausage gravy and a couple biscuits with honey and butter spread. DELICIOUS. Also the staff, especially the manager, were so polite and attentive. honestly, I couldn't have asked for more from this place. My only regret is that I didn't order the bloody Mary, which looked fantastic. They are open late (til 11) which makes it a great stop after apex or beermongers just across the street. The vibe was perfect for a casual breakfast. Large venue that was not too loud. From the start our service was amazing and every staff person treated us with the utmost care. I also enjoy the outdoor seating with overhead heating. We do not have anything like this in Montana. Now on to the food, HOLY BANANAS the 2nd best busicuit and gravies I've ever had (and I've had a lot of buscuits and gravy). My partner said it was the best he's ever had. The flavor was unreal and the texture was creamy and not too rich. Also, those busts just flakes apart and were obviously made with love. The reggie, The wedgie, and blueberry cornmeal cakes, all were freakin delicious. I'm a biscuits and gravy snob, 90% of restaurants make garbage gravy from a powdered mix, or their attempt at homemade gravy is a feeble attempt that would let everybodys grandma down. But Pine State, their gravy is delicious second only to my wife's gravy, sorry mom. If I could I'd pour their gravy over everything, in fact they ought to just serve a bowl of gravy. The blueberry cakes were top notch to, a great way to get a little sweet after all that thick gravy. This was such a disappointment after reading all of the reviews posted. If this is simply the best biscuits & gravy in Portland, people need to learn to cook & taste. Season your food! We both got biscuits & sausage gravy. Little flavor in either the gravy or sausage & the biscuit was underwhelming- small, almost flavorless (& you only got ONE that was split into two) which was disappointing considering the $6.00 cost and their reviews/reputation. I added a sausage patty for $3.00 that was not completely done- also cut in half. My husband got a cinnamon roll ($5.00) that had a 'sauce' poured over it- it would have been too dry to eat otherwise. I thought I'd get a chocolate 'pop tart' for $4.00. It was a tiny 3" square & had unsweetened chocolate in nearly burned pie crust. I did not choose to get the lavender icing on it- I doubt it would have helped. Don't waste your time or money on this place. Elmer's had better yesterday (my son got it when we had breakfast there). read more

This place, in my opinion, is the best breakfast in town. There is always a line but its always worth it. They have about 15 variations of sausage gravy on a biscuit and they are all great. Rude counter guy, sub-par food, uncomfortably hot and crowed. I ordered a sandwich which when I got it looked like a 6 year old with seizures had put it together, all the time standing there listening to the front counter guy be rude to customers. When I saw the single sandwich, I had been waiting 25 minutes for it looked so terrible and was so bland that I threw the slop in the bin and went down to Son of a Biscuit down the street and spent the same amount for a full 3 piece chicken meal with a huge homemade Biscuit(Pine State's looked like a Bisquick biscuit) , pickles, huge side of potato salad and bread, that looked as amazing as it was good and I got to listen to Cypress Hill and The Beastie Boys instead of a rude counter guy talking down to the poor people waiting in line for the slop at Pine State. read more

Its all about the base. The base of this place is the biscuits. Which can lead to a little confusion because it says Fried Chicken on a big sign lit up and visible from the street. Then there is the menu. Well its limited. I am not saying that is bad but it seems like a little more could be done. I am always skeptical when I see things like we use this other restaurants Pork or meat then we just pit it on a biscuit. Admittedly I stayed away from those options because of my own phobias. The good news the Reggie their most popular biscuit sandwich is like a open faced sandwich of deliciousness. There is bacon fried chicken and gravy all coming together under a biscuit that didnt skimp on the butter. I dont know call it the cardiac killer but I think my belly says it was worth it. Cheesy fries were not so cheesy. I guess if I am paying two dollars more for cheese I expect a little more cheese. Here's my three star reasoning cause the food is four star all the way. I am turned off by the get your own food bus your own table get your own water. But before hand give me a tip. What exactly am I tipping for? You taking my order? Finally made it here after years of waiting. I went with the Reggie Deluxe and a fried green tomato. Gravy is pretty bomb and sandwich is good. Tomato ehh. I recommend extra gravy because more is needed with order. Had to sit outside on a 29 degree day. Food was cold within 5 minutes. All in all it wasn't amazing but really good. Not worth the trip from Tigard anytime soon. read more

Probably one of the most proper breakfast's/brunches I've have here in Portland. The reggie deluxe is enough to satisfy you for a full day!

We went to the division street Pine State for a Sunday breakfast. We haven't been back to Pine State for about a year. I remember freshly fried and not greasy chicken of the Reggie on a fresh biscuit and sunny side egg. There was some passion and care in the preparation. A year later and it seems the passion is gone. The chicken was a little cool and definitely not prepared to order. The biscuits still taste good, but a little on the dry side. The egg was completely over cooked and no attention to preparation. The sausage gravy is still tasty, but just barely dusted the plate. The Bloody Mary is still nice, and the hot sauces do somewhat save the dish. The staff were friendly and helpful. I really want to like this local establishment, but they seem be going the way of other restaurants that open new doors - mass producing and limited quality control. I will give them another shot, but only one more chance. We will see. read more

I'm a recent convert to Pine State and I must admit I've already settled into a predictable pattern of "regular orders". Their biscuits are so delicious. Soft and chewy on the inside with a nice, brown crisp on top. I keep it simple with an egg and slice of cheese and all the flavors stand out. Their sweet tea is usually amazing and their fries with cajun spice keep me coming back for more. Service can be hit or miss but if you are flexible about outdoor, covered, enclosed seating options - you can usually be in and out in 45 minutes - for those of us who grab brunch in between meetings and other commitments. Probably the best gravy, biscuits ever! The food is amazing. That's why most wait in line outside for 30-40 minutes while one person inside takes your order, readies drinks and other duties while most wait. The reason for the 2 stars is the very slow process for getting customers fead. Why? There no reason why it takes so long to serve each customer... there is limited seating and I get that. However, there are open tables, to go options and many ways to create efficiency needed to make this work better. Standing in line, it takes about 5 minutes per group to take an order. So, if you see 10 couples or small groups ahead of you, it'll take 45-50 minutes outside to order. Poor management and planning. The food is amazing and that's why we are all standing in line... go figure. read more

I had high expectations for pine state because of all the hype but I thought it was just good. I didn't get anything of their special items but it was just average for me. I do appreciate the cleanness of the food and cheap prices. And really enjoyed their gravy, would highly recommend it. I wasn't as impressed as everyone else. The servers were kind and the ambiance is really cool, but my tummy wasn't super happy after the experience and I've had much better biscuits. Maybe it was me or they were having an off day. I'll try again possibly, but I'm not chomping at the bit to go back anytime soon. Also parking is a nightmare.
