The chow is only average, but after a night of High Intensity Liver Training, runny eggs and petrified bacon tastes like God made it. The waitresses are pretty consistently attractive and attentive. The dunge-, er, bathroom is .... Interesting. The first time I went down there I expected to see Sloth from Goonies behind Door #1 and Maynard and the Gimp from Pulp Fiction behind Door #2. Supposedly the Zodiac took a victim from this place... Probably got them down in that crazy bathroom. Came here for a late night coffee with friends. This place is open 24/7, and reminds me of a quintessential NY diner perched on the corner of some seedy neighborhood with typical seedy diner decor: flood lights, long booth tables with hideous brown vinyl seats, drab carpeting that hasn't been changed out since the 60's, & huge open windows for you to stare out at passerbys. I LUV a greasy spoon, and all I saw were huge bountiful, overflowing plates of perfectly-cut fries, (my weakness), sized between a mcdonald's fry & a UK-sized chip, (aka, in my opinion, the "perfectly-sized fry"), paired with thick, luscious creamy milkshakes...and I starred at this 'eye candy' as I graciously sipped on my decaf coffee...(some of the *best* coffee I've had at a diner yet!). Very unfriendly. Bad and slow service for a diner. TOTALLY AVOID. I went there with my baby and wife. We were not even served water or coffee for more than 10 mnts despite multiple reminders. Went to Pinecrest for brunch with my family because it's only a block away from our hotel and we were curious about "the best breakfast in San Francisco" as it proclaimed. The food was OK although they were in really big portions. The staff wasn't very friendly and the biggest throw-off was that 15% tips were already included in the bill. read more

Great food and big servings at a reasonable price for SF. Very comfortable booths and nice ambiance for a diner. Service is good and they turn tables pretty quickly so we've never had to wait. Get over yourselves....this place gets the job done at 2:00 AM. The omelettes are yummy and cooked like omelettes are supposed to be. The hashbrowns are crunchy and the service is good. From all the 3 star reviews I imagine this place can do some things right. When I went with some friends we waited and waited and waited to get a seat. Plenty of people had finished eating, but they also had to play the waiting game with the staff. During our entire meal they were totally non-existent which is too bad because I would have liked to have told someone about how horrible their food was. I have never complained about food in my life, but when I get charged 10$ for the inedible dog-food and processed slice of cheese they call a chili-burger it can get a fella a little upset. Everyone elses food looked equally horrifying, So I guess just now what you are getting yourself into and don't order anything outside of normal breakfast fare. read more

OMG! Down-home cooking done right! Exhausted and unable to check into my hotel in the afternoon, I was delightfully surprised to stumble upon the Pinecrest Diner. This is the real deal - a truly down-home diner experience. The Pinecrest Diner is open 24-h a day and offers a wide range of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. You can choose from any of their meal options anytime of the day. I ended up being so pleased with my first visit that I found myself coming back at least four times over the next few days just to explore their ample menu. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on their menu but I am going to single out their breakfast items because breakfast is my favorite meal and I often find it difficult to find places that don't charge an arm and a leg and deliver a high quality breakfast. All their egg dishes come with the most delightful crispy and not at all greasy hash brown potatoes. The omelets are all thoroughly cooked without being rubbery or dry. The portions are truly generous and all of the omelets are 3-egg dishes. Their pancakes are huge, fluffy and delicious even without the warm syrup that they serve with it. During a recent visit to SF, I made a point to stop by the Pinecrest Diner. I usually visit this diner every time I am in SF and had a great experience as usual. The Pinecrest is the standard "greasy spoon" with typical "diner" food. I usually stick to their omelettes for breakfast and burgers later in the day. As usual, this visit did not disappoint! They can be rather busy during peak hours, but they are open all night long! If you need some food before bed, this is a great spot to wind down and have some good food! read more

I was staying at a hotel in the area and stopped by for breakfast at around 8:45am. About half the tables were empty. I was told in no uncertain terms to sit at the counter if I was eating alone. Most of the issue was with the rude tone of the waitress. The other thing that annoyed me was that the place was half empty. We had two late night dinners there on our recent trip to San Francisco. One meal was of terrific rare hamburgers and the other was a delicious breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns and pancakes. Oh wow! We had been walking all day, and every restaurant around Union Square had huge queues (it was Friday night), and as we trudged up Geary St, we stumbled across the Pinecrest Diner. A fantastic 'American Diner' style restaurant, with friendly service and a huge menu. We ordered the Mediterranean Plate and it was delicious. I thought I was back in Greece. First came a lovely fresh salad with olives feta and lettuce and a delicious Greek salad dressing. Then came a big plate with fresh Tzatziki, lovely grilled chicken, greek salad and pita bread. We scoffed that as well as spinach and ricotta ravioli, which was a small plate but so rich that we couldn't have eaten another bite. This was probably the best meal we've had yet, probably as it doesn't feel touristy or over priced. Just delicious food, friendly staff and a lovely warm homey feel. We will be back! While staying at a hotel across the street, I went to this diner to have breakfast. I sat at a booth for two. After waiting for over five minutes, since no service person noticed me, I went to the counter to let them know I had been waiting and was told to wait a few more minutes. Then, a couple walked in and sat at the booth next to mine and got immediate service. When I told the waiter I was there first, he was rude and told me to sit at the counter, which I did not want to do...the booth was more comfortable. So I left and went around the corner to the Mason Cafe where I got service with a smile. Don't patronize the Pinecrest...they are rude to senior citizens like me and incompetent. read more

This is the kind of place that you have to be drunk to enjoy. I was and it still sucked. It was midnight and I was sober enough to order safe. I was served the worst grilled ham and cheese in the history of the United States. Unfortunately, I wasn't sober enough to realize that stopping and losing the $7.95 would have been a better choice than continuing to choke it down. Good news, it only takes 4 hours to totally digest their grilled ham and cheese, so you will be ready for breakfast. Luckily, one of my friends wasn't as sober, and ordered a bowl of chili. Generic canned chili with giant strips of onion and a stack of American Cheese food cut into cubes floating in the grease. Seeing those giant striated blocks of yellow wax slowly melting into his chili made me feel much more content with my frighteningly bad sandwich. The fact that this place has 3 1/2 stars makes me feel faint. From this day forward I will not eat at a restaurant reviewed on Yelp that has less than 100 reviews and 4 1/2 stars. read more

i popped in here today, not expecting bliss. it was near where i was and fit budget. jack n' the crack was across the street, but i just can't do it. so, pinecrest. i love the diner feel, but the food!the food! whhhhhhhhy? how can u go wrong with a patty melt i thought. well, here's how: add 4 tablespoons of fake butter, burn the patty, add velveeta, add greasy onions (i realize patty melt is greasy, but this took greasy to a whole other level) then add mayo (shouldn't i have to ask for that?!) when it arrived. i stared at it. i could have sworn it burped at me. i took a bite, put it down, sent it back. here's where the 2 stars come in instead of 1. i ordered a garden salad with a side of dressing. she adjusted the bill and we were square. read more

Went here while waiting for my son to get out of a concert across the street. Well, first we ordered some appetizers, told the waitress we would like to get those before we order our meal. She did not like that idea, but she said okay. got the Sweet Potato Fries, served cold! Got the chicken fingers and fires and was served with ranch dressing, but the menu said BBQ sauce, so I asked for BBQ and she grabbed the ranch and walked away and took like 5 minutes to come back. The food was served hot, except the chicken was overcooked and dry. So onto dinner, order the steak and eggs. Steak supposed to be cooked medium rare, was so tough and chewy even the steak knife could not cut the meat. Eggs cold and steak barely warm. Toast was burnt, they tried to hide it by turning it upside down. Anyway, the waitress did come by and refill our water and asked if we were done because they had people wanting to sit down. Looked up and nobody at the door, but did not say anything, just said we were finishing up and could we get a to go box. she said again that they need us to leave cause they need the table. So I said, then give us a box and a bag and we would leave. worst customer service ever and food is terrible. read more

I ordered a rueben sandwich and after waiting around 20 minutes was presented with what was basically a saurkraut sandwich with a couple thin slices of meat.
