I'm truly baffled with how bad this place is. I went here for lunch with a friend as we both wanted something that was around the area. This place looked somewhat promising, but upon first bite the fish tasted off, probably because it wasn't fresh and has been sitting out way too long. The rice was severely undercooked. Not to mention the imitation crab was still clumped together and frozen. Even the crispy toppings tasted stale. I've been coming to this location for a few years, but it's been getting worse with every visit. I feel like every time I've had it within the last year it has been soooo fishy and not fresh at all. The portions also don't compare to other poke spots, plus its pretty expensive ($20 for a small bowl + tea). I like that they have the boba teas, and that is pretty much the only thing I come back for. My girlfriend and I recently visited Poke Bar expecting a pleasant dining experience, but were met with unprofessionalism and rudeness that significantly marred our visit. My girlfriend's plate was noticeably smaller, which was quite disappointing. A simple request for a side box to compensate for the discrepancy seemed reasonable. However, the manager, Jenny, displayed a lack of professionalism and customer service skills. Her attitude was dismissive, stating that any issues should be raised during the preparation, which isn't a feasible expectation for customers. After some back-and-forth, Jenny agreed to provide the extra sides, but her demeanor suggested that this was a significant inconvenience. It was perplexing to witness such a reaction over a simple request for cucumbers, which are hardly a high-cost item. This experience left us feeling devalued and treated as mere numbers rather than valued customers. The entire encounter with the staff, especially Jenny, was off-putting. Their attitude and service approach were contrary to what one would expect in a customer-oriented industry. Based on this experience, I would hesitate to recommend this place to others. Employee was rude and made me feel rushed (it was not busy at all), without trying to explain the menu or be helpful with suggestions. Fish was not fresh tasting and texture was mushy like it had been frozen and thawed. Cucumber salad had a strange flavor and totally soggy. Checked this place out primarily out of convenience and overall, wasn't impressed. They have a decent variety of toppings, including crab salad and seaweed salad (or you can choose cucumber salad for one of the two instead) at no additional cost. However, their sauce is waaay too heavy and overpowering, considering I tried one of the mixes they labeled as "light" (I think just their house sauce and sesame oil) and I still could barely taste the other ingredients. When I go to a poke place, I want to be able to taste the freshness of the raw fish and unfortunately, I really just couldn't taste much of anything, thanks to the overwhelming mask from the sauce...which kind of makes me wonder what they're trying to cover up?! Besides the overly sauce-y bowl, their soda machine wasn't working, as they accidentally turned off the syrup switch. I always like to do half greens and half rice, and a small bowl was just enough for me. I got to choose 2 scoops of protein (salmon and scallops), as well as crab meat, seaweed and cucumber salad. As for the sauce, I opted for their popular combo of spicy mayo and house dressing. Everything tasted great and my bowl was pretty filling for me. I know I've been here at least a dozen times because I finally filled up my frequent buyer card and received my free medium poke bowl. I've been to this location, Torrance and Hermosa and this one is my favorite because they're fast, bowls are always consistent and friendly service. I always build my own bowl, large with two scoops of brown rice. With the large you get four scoops of protein--tuna, spicy tuna, and two scoops of albacore, mixed with sesame oil, and topped with white onions, kale, cilantro, jalapeño, edamame, cucumbers and mixed with the spicy mayo and ponzu. Then I add crab meat, seaweed salad and ginger and top it with fried garlic and onions and furikake on the rice.... yes, I eat this all by myself in one sitting! but in my defense, I don't eat breakfast!! Sometimes, I'll order the same thing and then split it in half and add a side salad to create two meals. This is much more diet friendly! It's great either way. I love how fresh all of the ingredients are and the simplicity of the food, and that it's easy to navigate through the line. The staff are always very friendly and patient. Poke Bar is a chain that's rapidly opened a bunch of locations all over Los Angeles. I've been to their Westwood location and liked it, but the El Segundo location is not as good, in my opinion. Same build your own poke bowl concept - choose your base, fish, toppings, sauce, etc. I liked the flavors and topping and fish choices BUT I feel like portions are on the smaller side, even smaller than at the Westwood location! Workers are super friendly and the space itself is nice - lots of seating options. However, the quantity of food I received for $11 was sad. the box was tiny, the amount of actual fish was laughable, the amount of other sides/toppings was equally stingy, and it probably was the worst deal on a poke bowl I'd ever seen. Now before I continue on, I read many bad review posts of this place but my review is purely my experience especially of having visited this place at least twice before the COVID disaster and before I actively wrote reviews. I was pleasantly surprised to see their offerings have expanded beyond poke bowls as they now have Katsu curry and Yubu pockets of different fillings. I opted for the typical poke bowl as it suits my more lean fare preferences. I ordered a small bowl customized with Spicy tuna and albacore topped with seaweed, edamame, brown rice, pickled cucumber, and toasted garlic, sesame seeds, seasoned with spicy mayo and yuzu sauce. The small bowl was rather large enough for my normal lunch portions so no complaint on the generosity of food. The fish and everything else tasted quite fresh. The various selections provided for a wonderful savory flavor of salty, spicy , and tart. The place was very clean. There was amply parking even if their neighbor was a burger place (Farmer Boy burgers) and other establishments. The only critique I'd have for this place is the staff. They are too robotical and not very personable. Waking in to smiling and greeting staff makes a difference for someone ordering food. As dour as they seem, it just made you want to order pay and leave to eat elsewhere. So if management os reading this, my verdict is good is 5 stars, staff is 3 stars.
