Poke king is a great addition to the Reno food scene, but the overall price of each poke bowl and slight concerns prevent it from achieving the coveted 5 stars. Located in what used to be Crepe N Roll, I've been waiting to see what would open there when the crepe shop closed down. When I heard it was a poke place, i was ecstatic. Poke in Reno? That's completely unheard of. But I also knew that this is somewhat bad. Since they'll be one of the only poke place in town, that means they can set their prices as high as they want, and that's exactly what they did. A regular sized bowl runs you about $11 and a large bowl $16. These prices are comparable to SoCal, but without the quantity. As for quality, the fish is fresh. I haven't had any bad experiences with any of the proteins on any of the times I've gone (5 times). All of the sauces are great. You can mix and match! I recommend the sesame shoyu and the spicy mayo together! The toppings are basically endless, because you can ask for as much and as many as you want. You can get as much seaweed salad and crab salad! But the bases can be iffy. I've had a couple of instances where the rice was both crunchy and mushy, and I'm not the only one. On top of that, the salad greens are just the boxed greens you can get from Walmart. The service here is both fast and friendly! Even though they maybe rushed/busy (especially during lunch), they take their time to ask you how you're doing. I really appreciate this kind of service. Gabe is especially great! The atmosphere / environment here is very casual and chill. There aren't that many times inside (two big picnic tables, two tables that seat two, and a stool area that seats four). But there are several tables outside. Although it is a small space, many people go in and out, especially during peak hours. Plan to wait at least 15min if the line is right at the door. Other than that, the restaurant is minimalistic. There's nothing too crazy or bougie about the decor, which is good! They do have a loyalty program, which is pretty cool! All you need to do is give them your phone number and you're all signed up. The program is pretty simple. Spend $1 and you get 1point. Once you reach 50points, you can get a free ice cream sandwich. 150points equal a free regular bowl! Overall, the poke at Poke King is the best I've had in Reno. A regular bowl (3 proteins) gets me at a comfortable full, especially with the "unlimited" toppings that I can get. And the loyalty program and the staff just make it even better! I just wish the rice was more consistent and the price isn't that high. I would gladly pay $8/$9 for poke, but $11 just seems a little too much. I could just pay six more dollars to get AYCE sushi across the street. But again, I get it from a business standpoint. I would still go back, and I would definitely recommend it if you haven't gone. But I just don't think it'll be one of my go-to restaurants in town. read more

They made great suggestions and showed us the way of the land. Everything looked very fresh and the kitchen was clean. The seating area was tight and needs to be reworked. There're two, 6 person bench style tables, a tight window bar and a few 2 top tables against the wall plagued with too many chairs which made it a bit of a mess. We had the a regular bowl witch is about $11 and well worth it! I love that you can mix 'n match your base. I did white rice and greens. Then you pick you 3 proteins. I did tuna, yellowtail and shrimp. They mixed them together with your choice of house made sauces. I chose spicy mayo, the girl suggested adding truffle ponzu. She said it was popular. She was so right! Then came all the other toppings!!! Crabmix, scallions, seaweed salad, picked ginger, edamame and Avocado ($1 extra for the Avo, no prob). I also had sliced cucumber, but I would suggest to them chop them or Julian them, they're easier to eat that way with chopsticks. They have a frequent flyer program but I was not asked to participate. Normally, I would've asked but I was bringing dinner to my Pop and it's never a good idea to keep him waiting for food. Pops bowl was brown rice (he hates it but it's good for him) with octopus, shrimp and salmon topped with crab and the most basic veg they offered. He loved it. Ate the entire thing. In the land of AYCE sushi this is a great alternative that I wish I'd discovered a long time ago. Significantly cheaper than an AYCE dinner and you get a nice sized serving of raw fish without having to eat a ton of rice along with it. Not charging extra for seaweed or crab salad is nice. I had spicy tuna, salmon, octopus, shrimp, and scallops, and it was all tasty. I probably hit an AYCE sushi place once a month on average but now I'm thinking 80% of the time I'll probably hit this place up and save some money and some calories. I asked for a small side of it and they mounded it on. Disappointed. It kind of ruined most of the bowl. They could do a better job of dicing the ahi too. Next, indicate a base of white or brown rice, mixed greens, wonton chips, or a mix of your choosing. Again, the fish was perfect with the octopus a delicious standout. Very nice, savory sauce, and in general a really satisfying, filling bowl of enjoyable flavor and texture. The avocado was nice and ripe, and the crab salad was finely shredded, akin to that used to top sushi rolls. Not a ton of flavor on its own, but a nice complement to the bowl. The rice came straight from the cooker, so it was still a bit warm. A comforting touch against the refrigerated ingredients. I really appreciate a menu that is simple and straight-forward, yet allows for any number of combinations to be assembled. I'd like to taste the other sauces and mix up the seafood combinations, and with such great service and quality ingredients, I doubt it'll be long before I work my way through a few more bowls of poke delight. read more

What you get is an explosion of flavors and textures that completely make you forget you're in what looks like a remodeled Jimmy John's. The quality of everything in the bowl is fantastic. Add to this the staff, who are used to people not knowing what everything on the menu is and they're almost overly sweet in explaining everything. I'd almost pay extra to have a sorta surly mean guy make fun of me for not knowing what a Sesame Shoyu is. I don't care as long as I get my bowl of atomic whoop-ass. Super impressed! I was unsure about coming here because I assumed poke is mostly fish and meat but I got the tofu bowl. Daniel, the owner even fried some tofu for me. How it works is: you choose your base (white or brown rice, greens,...), the your proteins, and sauce. And you can add toppings too. I went with the sesame shoyu and Daniel recommended some spicy mayo. I'm not a huge fan of anything spicy but boy this was amazing! He sure did know his recommendations! I really appreciate how they left the menu quite simple because I could see how it would be overwhelming to have so many more choices. I should point out the way this is set up you choose a base, protein, a sauce, and your toppings. The smaller version bowl comes with a choice of three different proteins while the larger option has five. So with this being said you get to choose either three or five different proteins which I didn't get that from the research I did. You can also mix sauces which I took the recommendation of the girl who was working. There were so many toppings to choose from and you could easily go overboard on these but for me more simple the better and it turned out to be a lot of food, even the smaller bowl. So for my bowl today I chose a white rice base with salmon, tuna, and spicy tuna for my proteins. For my sauce I mixed spicy mayo with truffle ponzu sauce. My toppings included cucumber, tobiko, crab salad, seaweed salad, and edamame. It was so good I wanted to eat the whole thing but my stomach is in that bag so I had to split it up and save half for later. So even the small ball is filling. I finally made it here since I live all the way across town. It's super simple to make your Poke Bowl and they have lots of protein, sauces, and toppings to choose from. The employees behind the amazing food is awesome to share you what goes well with what and gives you an idea of good combinations of Poke. I got a regular bowl ($10.95 / 3 scoops of protein) with white rice base. In addition, two scoops of protein, one scoop of octopus, green onions, with sesame ponzu, and spicy mayo. As for toppings, you can get MANY as you want. Tobiko, avocado ($1 extra), seaweed salad, and crab was a must for me. It was definitely worth the drive. Ever since I tried my first poke bowl in San Diego, I have been hoping for the day that it would come to Reno. At last, my prayers have been answered! If you don't know what a poke bowl is, think deconstructed sushi... it's fabulous and you don't get the feeling like you want to die after eating too much all you can eat sushi, so that's also a bonus ;) The shop is small, located in Northwest Reno, and offers indoor and outdoor seating. The set-up is almost like Qdoba, where there are different stations. You choose your bowl size first: regular bowl gives three scoops of fish while the large gives 5. I opted for the regular. As a base to the bowl you can choose mixed greens, rice (white or brown) or wonton chips. You can even do a mix, which is what I did- it was great, but I might recommend mostly spring greens with just a scoop of rice. They also threw in a side of wonton chips on the house, which was sweet. They offer a great variety of fresh delicious fish and all the toppings you could hope for! The most difficult part was choosing the sauce... they have 4 different kinds, and i'm sure they are all delicious. I was a bit frustrated because I was on the fence about which one to try and the girl working there wasn't much help. Then, I hear the group behind me facing the same quandary, and their worker offered them tasters of each. Wish I could've had that option. This is the only poke place that opened in Reno! To my surprise I wasn't a big fan of it but my boyfriend was. This place gets pretty busy. The line was literally out the door. As for the poke, I got a the small (regular) size and it was $11. So it was pretty pricey for the size you get. I guess I can't complain much since it did fill me up. The reason why I didn't like this place all that much is because the salmon. I'm a big salmon fan and I know when a salmon isn't good.. first it was too soft which I don't like. It was warm (I think the rice may have something to do with it) but I just didn't like that. The last thing was the skin. The salmon had something brown attached to it. I think it was the skin. Living in North Sparks, I really hadn't heard of this place yet. A friend suggested it for lunch today and couldn't have been happier with the choice. Walking in, I really wasn't even sure what to expect. It seems a little cramped inside, but seating seemed appropriate. My order taker gave me the low down on how to order and gave me a few seconds to create my perfect bowl. I went with brown rice, tuna, yellow tail and scallops for my protein with sesame sauce to season it. I topped it off with cucumber, seaweed salad, red cabbage and edamame. The flavors all went very well together and made quite pleasant to the taste buds. The fish seemed very fresh. We arrived a little after 11:30 am. While seated and enjoying our lunch, I had noticed that quite quickly the line began to wrap around inside the smaller space and made it difficult for new patrons to enter. I would definitely suggest getting there a little earlier to avoid the typical lunch rush. I usually go a little lighter on lunch and found the regular size bowl to be more than enough for my lunch appetite. This has become a staple in our family. It's the closest to thing to the poke we enjoyed in Hawaii. First timer? Don't be intimidated the staff is super helpful and accommodating to meet your individual likes. I skip the rice and lettuce, opting for a seaweed salad base then add a mix of salmon and tuna. The fish is super fresh and very tasty, perfectly sized to allow the ultimate bite with whatever combination of toppings you'd like to incorporate. We have visited for both lunch and dinner. It can be busy around the noon hour with a line out the door and limited seating. Don't fret, staff are super efficient and the cafeteria-style line will move very quickly. One of my favorite places to grab lunch, especially during these 100+ degree days. The fish is very fresh and tasty as well as the sauces which are super yummy. Especially the sweet unagi sauce. The regular bowl with 3 proteins is definitely enough for one person. I got spicy tuna, shrimp, scallops, salmon and octopus. It was mixed with spicy mayo and sesame shoyu, as well as green onion and little fishie eggs. The portion was almost big enough to fill the "regular" size bowl, and that's WITHOUT any toppings or base. The girl who made it actually offered to put the chips in a different bowl, so that they didn't get soggy, which made it really easy for me to pig out on their toppings. Which I am currently doing. This review is taking me forever to write because I just can't put the bowl down. Anyway. They have a HUGE list of toppings. I picked a bunch but it's no where near all of them. I got cucumber, jalapeno, fried garlic, furikake, edamame, seaweed salad, crab salad, sesame seeds, and then I smothered it in sriracha. And all of that comes included in the price, they don't charge extra for your extras! Except avocado I think. They have little takeout cups for sriracha and soy sauce packets for the glutton on the go. This was more than I could eat at all you can eat sushi, AND I get to take it home and eat it in bed AND I don't have to leave the place hating myself like I usually do at AYCE sushi. I'm so happy. Ordering was a little strange at first, but the really nice staff walked me through it. I also ordered a side bowl of fried wanton which was excellent. I only wish they had like egg rolls or tempura shrimp or something, but that might not be the typical appetizer with this? Masubi perhaps? Anyways, i would definitely come back. read more
