The savory pies are delicious!! We got the Classic Chicken Pot Pie, and I got the Steak & Ale as a combo (add mashed potatoes and gravy). Large chunks of meat. Flavorful. Delicious crust. Good portion size. While we were there, we also got some sweets. Caramel Apple Crumble and Key Line were the selections. Both were very flavorful. I was very pleased the key lime didn't have food coloring like it's typically prepared. My only recommendation would be to bake the crust for the key lime entirely before pouring in the custard. The crust was underbaked and chewy, and I couldn't even cut through it. I ended up eating the crust around the edges, but left the bottom crust behind. We sat outside on a beautiful day. Lots of people walking by and shopping in the plaza. Inside was very inviting and cozy. I was expecting a little more sit down, but there was some window seating inside, and two tables (2 top and 4 top) outside. Overall, I would recommend and come back and try some other items. I would definitely recommend eating it fresh instead of taking it to-go. The service was friendly & told us how to reheat it at home. The place was clean & wasn't busy. Parking was ample. It is on the pricey side, like $10- something for a mini pie. The pie we got took us 2 tries to heat up fully but the crust was already hard after the first heating-up so it was hard to cut & bite into. The egg was the best part but the rest tasted a lot like hashbrowns. I like that they included sour cream & bacon in the pie. It was sweet & savory like a breakfast omelette but very dry. The service here is phenomenal. I have now made 2 stops here. I brought my out of town friends to sidecar for a treat and we wound up with doughnuts, pie and ice cream samples. Everything was so good I ended up bringing another out of town friend back. The first trip we had a guava and cheese hand pie and a Sausage roll. Both were good, I felt the sausage roll was flavorful- lots of sage, but just needed the tiniest bit of added salt. The guava cheese roll was perfect to me- more cheese than guava but my friends wanted more guava. The second trip was the pecan and key lime pie. I realize I am a traditionalist with pie and the key lime was absolutely sublime! (Ha!) the cream on top was perfection. The pecan pie had orange notes and that just threw me off. The staff checked in on how I liked it and when I didn't rave she suggested a replacement. The only problem is I liked the replacement so much I forgot to get a photo! I found this place on yelp a while ago but had only gotten around to visiting in more recent times. My boyfriend and I had actually rolled up only intending to try out the ice cream place next door but were pleasantly surprised to see Pop Pie! We went in and were quickly greeted by the staff. They were so kind and gave us a quick run down of the available pies and told us to feel free to ask any questions. My boyfriend got the Green Hog pie with a side of corn while I got the Chicken pie with a side of mashed potatoes. For drink I got the matcha horchata. My drink came out first and it was soooo good. It was refreshing with the perfect flavor balance between the matcha and the horchata. I was told that the horchata was made the more traditional way with the rice soaked, I could tell (sooo good). Once the food came out, my boyfriend and I dug right in. Everything was so hot and fresh. The pie was so flaky and the filling was flavorful. My boyfriend and I were both making sure to get all of the crust off of the sides to eat. The mashed potatoes were creamy with some skin in them. The corn was warm and really good. We were so full at the end and really enjoyed our experience! We were set on getting ice cream for dessert so we didn't try the sweet pies on this outing but loved it so much that we returned and tried the yuzu crumble as well as the apple! Both were AMAZING. If you haven't been to this plaza before the parking lot is pretty small, so grab any spot you can. I recommend street parking on Santa Ana Ave. We came on a Friday evening and there was only one person ahead of us in line. It is counter service and if you plan to dine-in, they have about 6 or 7 bar style seats you can enjoy your food at. We decided to get a pie and side each which is more than enough food. After you order, they warm up a pie from the case in a convection oven to get it piping hot. So hot, you should wait a few minutes before digging in. After waiting though, you're in for some hearty goodness. We got the Classic Chicken and the Steak & Ale, which were both great, but I recommend the former. The crust was buttery, flaky, and not too thick. The filling was fresh, moist, and delicious. Out of the two sides we ordered, I would take the Mashed Potatoes over the Creamed Corn. Upon parking in the parking lot, I could smell that buttery baked pie goodness. I followed the aroma into the store front. They had two cases, one for their savory pies and one for their sweet pies. They were even taking pre orders for Thanksgiving pies. They had an awesome selection with so many pies to choose from. Everything looked and smelled so tasty. I went with my instincts and got a Chicken Pot Pie ($10). Service was super friendly and helpful. They have self serve utensils and water in front. I enjoyed my pie while I was there and it was so tasty. The crust was flakey and buttery. The filling was generously chunky with the soup to be on the thick side. Yum! It may look small but it was enough for a lunch portion. I will definitely be back to try more of their pies. I also think their pies are super cute for gifting. Who knew that pies were so fun? On a whim, I order the Classic Chicken - it's around $11ish dollars. It comes with chicken breast, garden veggies [carrots, little pearl onions, and celery], and marinated in an herb sauce. This is SO good. The exterior of the pie is perfection - it's soft and flakey and unlike any pot pie I've ever experience. There's no pie crust situation here, instead the crust is much more delicate and flakey than anticipated which made me like it that much more - something that resembled a flakey croissant. They use real top notch key ingredient shiz. What an incredible pie dough. I've also ordered their Green Hog & Cheese ($11.00). This is their Latin American take on the pot pie - it's slow braised pork shoulder, roasted serrano, jalapeno with pasilla peppers, tomatillo and jack cheese. Pie crust was delicious, however, the inerts were meh because it mostly consisted of meat. I Stopped in on Thanksgiving to pick up a pie around 11:30am. They had limited selection which was to be expected so I decided to go with what I thought was the best pie available. It was their Cranberry Apple Ginger Crumble pie. I was told they had to charge me per slice for the whole pie making it more expensive ($48) but I accepted that with the expectation to have a good tasting pie. Unfortunately me and my guests were disappointed with a pie that tasted like it was left open inside a fridge for a week. We pulled only 2 slices out that we did not finish because of the bad taste and had to throw away the rest. After contacting the store the next day because they closed at 2pm on thanksgiving, to ask for a replacement or refund, I was told by the store manager they do not have authority to refund or exchange my pie. Instead to contact their corporate representative Which is info@poppieco.com for anyone else that has future issues at the 17 St Newport Beach location. After emailing my experience to their representative the owner "Steven Torres" replied to me expressing his apologies regarding my experience and assured me by ruling out having a freezer or fridge tasting pie could not be the case because they make all their pies fresh daily. Well im sorry but I'm not someone to complain unless theirs a good reason and my pie tasted bad and I have guests who also agreed. His offer of exchange was to gift me 4 slices of pie to compensate me for the bad experience I guess because we partially consumed 2 slices of the original pie?! Well I thought I'll take what I can get if that's all he's offering and replied with my acceptance of his offer. Unfortunately I have not received a reply after 6 days of waiting on his reply on how I can receive my 4 slices of pie so unfortunately a bad review was made because of this. Had this place bookmarked for some time as BF has been on the hunt for a comparable place to his beloved meat pies from England. We were able to stop by for weekend lunch. Parking in this plaza can get crazy because Sidecar Donuts is in this plaza, right next to Pop Pie, and is pretty popular. For the time we were here eating our items, we saw quite a lot of people arriving to get some donuts next door. Anyways, onto Pop Pie! We wanted to eat our hot items right then and there, so it was good that they had some counter seating by the window. There's two tables outside too, but it was easier to dine indoors. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that they bring you the items on a metal pan that they take back and that they offer metal utensils for you to dig into their pies! They also offer a large water jug with non-single use cups, so that was another bonus. BF and I ordered 4 items to share: * sausage roll ($6) * steak and ale pie ($10.50) * classic chicken pot pie ($10) * aussie meat pie ($10) We had asked for the difference between the steak and ale versus the aussie meat, and it was that the aussie meat pie is a bit sweeter (think sorta like a sloppy joe kinda taste and consistency). I liked both and one would stand out over the other depending on what you're in the mood for (e.g. the aussie meat pie would speak to me if I was craving a sweeter savory pie that day, and the steak and ale would taste the best if I wanted a savory hearty pie). The chicken pot pie is a really solid pie here, with tender tender chicken, soft vegetables, and an excellent creamy sauce, wrapped in flakey goodness. I think out of it all, the sausage roll might be my least favorite since compared to the others, it was not as moist, but I do like the taste of the seasoning in the sausage. I love a good pie especially a savory pie so I was excited to try pop pie and their chicken pot pie which is a favorite in our family. Each pie is $12 and it's roughly 5" wide at the top, 4" where the filling actually starts, going down to 3" at the bottom. For an additional $4 you can have a side of mashed potatoes or creamed corn. The pie is delicious. The crust is flakey, there are a few large chunks of chicken, I would say roughly 1/4 piece worth of chicken breast with pearled onions, peas and carrots with gravy. But to me this wasn't large enough for a meal and adding in mashed potatoes or creamed corn as a side would only serve to be used as a cheaper filler since the pie itself is rather small. The price point is steep for the size IMO. This should be an $8 pot pie with all things considered. For $12 I would say the sides need to be given not additional. Overall if you want a snack, by all means the savory pies are great. I don't think on their own it's enough to say it was a meal. read more

They also sell take-home pies with raw dough for $1 less per. My party got the Chicken Pot Pie and Steak and Ale, along with a Cold Brew. I enjoyed the chicken filling but my party said the chicken was overcooked. The Steak and Ale had large soft chunks of steak, very pleasant to the mouth. The Cold Brew was too sour. I did not try their pies or ice cream (the ice cream shop is connected to the restaurant), but it's hard when a popular donut place (Sidecar) is adjacent to the restaurant. Steak and ale was somewhat bland, but the aussie meat was very flavorful. The Aussie meat pie tasted higher quality and fresher than the fast-food ones in Australia. Crusts were nicely buttery and flaky. The sausage roll was disappointing as their meat mixture was crumbly, dry, and overly seasoned with herbs. Key lime pie was fantastic but the crust was slightly too thick making it hard to slice through. Will definitely get the Aussie meat and key lime pie next time.
