I went to powder on a rainy day at around 1:00p right after opening, so it wasn't busy at all. I got banana coconut ice with local honey, strawberry glaze, cinnamon, and mochi. The resulting creation wasn't much of a looker, but it was everything I wanted and more. The shave ice at powder is pretty aptly named; its fineness gives it the sensation of being quite dry, then it melts in your mouth. The most powerful component was the honey, which tied all of the elements together. This is not your traditional ice cream. I've been wanting to try Powder since last summer when I found them on Yelp. Everything about this dessert is unique and looks neat too. They have an eclectic selection of flavors from black sesame, green tea, horchata, cereal milk, ube, Vietnamese coffee, and mango. I had the black sesame with mochi and crushed Oreos which was heaven! Even though it's shaved ice cream there was a lot of black sesame flavor. It pared perfectly with the soft and chewy mochi. And who doesn't love Oreos as a topping? Every cup comes with a wafer and they are sooo good! I wish I could buy a pack of just the wafers. This is a pretty tiny shop, I'm guessing a dozen or so people can stand inside but you might be touching elbows. There are no tables except for a small bench. The staff was very helpful and friendly. It was hard to decide what to get since I wanted to try everything. The lady confirmed my decision to get the black sesame and highly recommended getting it with Oreos. It's a very small shop with not much room to stand or sit, so it's best taken to-go. I ordered the regular matcha green tea snow with condensed milk and mochi, and they stuck a waffle cookie in there. My total was between $7-9. The employees told me the regular size would be enough to share for two... but honestly it's kind of small, we finished it pretty quickly. It's a little disappointing for such a small size for that price. Also, the matcha snow didn't have an authentic bittersweet matcha taste, but rather tasted like any kind of regular green tea ice cream you can get in Safeway or some grocery store. The mochi toppings are also pretty normal, like you can get that at any Yogurtland or froyo place. Given the price, location (it's far from Bart stations), sizes, and disappointing taste experience, it's not worth the hype that Insider/other food review pages gave it. (Also... 50 cents for each topping...? Every time I have gone to powder it has been a great experience. I love that they do shaved snow rather than regular shaved ice because shaved snow is 1000000000000x better. Snow has just fallen in San Francisco and the lucky DivCo residents just got luckier. As the name suggests, Powder brings the first shaved snow shop to SF. Light, airy, icy ribbons flavored with horchata, Vietnamese coffee, matcha, strawberry and other rotating flavors. A small cup is $4.50 and large is $1 extra. You can also top off your snow with ingredients like mochi, sliced almonds, chocolate syrup, etc. Depending on your creation, this dessert can get pricey, but still less than the "normal" $10 desserts you get in restaurants nowadays. We sauntered over to Powder from Nopa since Marti always wants more desserts. I didn't get my own, but ended up one anyway since the staff made a mistake on one of the orders. The Big Easy was too sweet for my taste. It was a combo of vietnamese coffee topped with sliced almonds, chocolate glaze and a sweet milk glaze. I couldn't distinctly taste the coffee flavor since it was overwhelmed with the two glazes on it. But my taste buds lean toward less sweet flavors anyway.
