    Focaccia bites and sandwiches!
    Amanda J.

Finally, opened on May 24th, 2023! I stopped in 4 days later towards the end of the day for a latte. By 3:30pm many of the pastries and premade sandwiches were gone, but the staff was still slicing the extra large focaccia and making fresh sandwiches for the couples coming in. With two people ahead of me and 2 more coming in behind the person at the register smartly delegated to her team member to make my latte. Efficiency like this will make this into my new regular coffee pick me up spot. Unclear what type of espresso beans Prato Bakery uses, but the espresso machine is key. Most Italians will shun my skim milk iced latte order, but if you are going for a single or doppio espresso, go here! The espresso shot is layered with a nice caramel color. There is a sweetness from the perfect pull of the espresso to water ratio. The place has a large selection of sandwiches and pastry, but can only seat about 7 people. There are two table tops with two metal seats and three metal stools where people rested for their sandwiches to be made. I can imagine in between the breakfast and lunch rush they may have some music to hum the quiet space. As an impulse buy I purchased a bag of mixed cantucci cookies. I remember stopping in the Hoboken location a year prior and loving the fig kind. This time I took the almond cookie from the bag and enjoyed it with my latte. This version was rounder and not like the longer typical biscotti looking pieces. It was soft in the middle and not overly sweet. I like cantucci because of the almond flavor. It's perfect for dipping in a hot espresso, but doesn't break your teeth like aged Biscotti can.

Plain Bad coffee. Another place that can't make a cappuccino to save their lives. Good sandwiches though.

Not only…read moreare the desserts incredible, but the employees were so friendly and pleasant to deal with as well. The star of the show is, of course, the Merveilleux. It's made with light, airy meringue and whipped cream, then covered in chocolate shavings. It somehow manages to be rich and delicate at the same time. I can see why it's their signature dessert. They offer different flavors and sizes too, from mini versions to larger cakes that are perfect for sharing. One of the coolest parts of visiting is that the kitchen is completely open. You can watch the pastry chefs assembling these beautiful creations right in front of you. It's mesmerizing and makes the whole experience feel special. The bakery has roots in Northern France and Belgium, where the Merveilleux originated, but pastry chef Frédéric Vaucamps reinvented the classic recipe to make it lighter and more modern. Whatever he did worked because these pastries are unforgettable. A quick tip: cash only, so come prepared. Honestly, if you're anywhere nearby, I think you need to run there. Between the amazing desserts, the friendly staff, and the chance to watch everything being made fresh, it's one of the most enjoyable bakery experiences I've had in a long time. I know you won't be sorry!

Aux Merveilleux de Fred is a tiny, beautifully fragrant shop on 8th Ave. I ordered the cold brew black and it was one of the smoothest, most satisfying first cups of the day I've had in a long time. Finding genuinely good black cold brew in this city is harder than it should be, and this one hit the spot so perfectly I made a second solo trip before sundown. The chocolate and almond croissant was delicate, flaky, and exactly what a croissant should be. The shop itself is small, no indoor seating, but two benches out front! The staff was warm and the whole place smells incredible the moment you walk in. I've already earmarked the Cramique for my next visit, because if it's anywhere near as good as everything else, I'm in trouble. Do yourself a favor and stop in!

The staff is all very nice and the food comes out quickly. portion sizes are decent for lunch items and things like french toast are above average. I liked that they used real tableware that had some weight to it as opposed to plastic, we accidentally knocked over a glass as we were leaving and it hit the ground but didn't break so that was a big relief but it makes the dining experience feel like more thought was put into it when even the table ware is of good quality. Overall it seems like a place that will be around for a long time, and you should definitely visit if you're in the area.

Very small space, so you'll be squeezed tightly with your neighbors. Come here after the brunch rush, after 1:30pm, to get a seat. Otherwise, there's always a wait. Quick, efficient service. Menu is small, simple, but everything is tasty and you can't go wrong with any option. $24 big banter Breakfast was a healthy combo of filling ingredients. Good to share between two people or take leftovers home. $18 avocado toast + $3 egg was tasty, filling and healthy. Pretty presentation. $6 hot matcha was disappointing. Very bland and watered down. Tasted only milk, no matcha, which was sad.
