Stopped by the place on my final day in NJ for NYCC with 3 other friends. We got a few Cantucci (Fig [My absolute favorite out of the bunch], Apricot, and Chocolate), 3 of the Mini Bombolone Custard, and my friend got some of their fresh sliced bread. The sweets were all amazing. None of them tasted excessively sweet, and they all had quite a light taste. I did not get to try the chocolate Cantucci or the bread but my friend did eat all of that bread so he must of liked it! He used it for the big breakfast we cooked on our final day together. New to The Heights but already a beloved bakery in my heart. Go for good coffee, delicious simple sandwiches and even the occasional sweets. I loveeee the Mama Mia sandwich, the flatbreads, even the little biscottis. And if you love eggplant get the Jersey! Roasted eggplant & buffalo muzz. If you love those sandwiches with a million different ingredients, this might not be for your. The ingredients are tasty and quality, but there are usually just a few. Simple but so good. Coffee is great, the best in JC Heights. Pastry is fresh of the day and delicious, my favorite are cantoucci and girella I think is the name, a sweet pastry with cream and raisins. Their slices of schiacciate with delicious toppings are real yummy. Service is always nice, friendly and warm. I've had the nicest conversations there. Definitely a place to visit often. Finally, opened on May 24th, 2023! I stopped in 4 days later towards the end of the day for a latte. By 3:30pm many of the pastries and premade sandwiches were gone, but the staff was still slicing the extra large focaccia and making fresh sandwiches for the couples coming in. With two people ahead of me and 2 more coming in behind the person at the register smartly delegated to her team member to make my latte. Efficiency like this will make this into my new regular coffee pick me up spot. Unclear what type of espresso beans Prato Bakery uses, but the espresso machine is key. Most Italians will shun my skim milk iced latte order, but if you are going for a single or doppio espresso, go here! The espresso shot is layered with a nice caramel color. There is a sweetness from the perfect pull of the espresso to water ratio. The place has a large selection of sandwiches and pastry, but can only seat about 7 people. There are two table tops with two metal seats and three metal stools where people rested for their sandwiches to be made. I can imagine in between the breakfast and lunch rush they may have some music to hum the quiet space. As an impulse buy I purchased a bag of mixed cantucci cookies. I remember stopping in the Hoboken location a year prior and loving the fig kind. This time I took the almond cookie from the bag and enjoyed it with my latte. This version was rounder and not like the longer typical biscotti looking pieces. It was soft in the middle and not overly sweet. I like cantucci because of the almond flavor. It's perfect for dipping in a hot espresso, but doesn't break your teeth like aged Biscotti can. read more

Prato Bakery's The Heights location recently opened up minutes from my friend's place, and I couldn't wait to finally try them. During my last visit over the previous Thanksgiving holiday, it was still vacant. I had my first experience with this brand a couple years ago as a snack while I drank beers next door at Departed Soles Brewing Co., and I had a favorable time with their food. I loved everything I ate, the prices were a bit on the high end, and the service was efficient. And, whenever possible I liked to support small family-owned and/or local businesses. Lastly, they participated in the "Too Good To Go" app which was a program where businesses offered any remaining food at a discount instead of being thrown away; such an awesome idea and great way to try new businesses! One of my favorite bakeries in jersey city, however the last few times I've been here, both jersey city locations the cornettos are hard and not fresh, how it used to be. I kept coming back thinking it's an off day but clearly that's not the case. If it's a day old they shouldn't be selling it. So disappointing :( read more
