Desperate for some moving help, we decided to hire Akela based on Yelp reviews. We had a bunch of furniture and boxes we needed to move into a new 2 bedroom apartment. Our appointment was for 2pm on Saturday, but thankfully, another customer cancelled and they were able to come early. Kuka, Charles, and Igor were our movers. They were respectful, efficient, and very friendly. I felt bad that we had so much stuff, but they were patient and never complained. All of our furniture was wrapped and packaged well, preventing them from getting damaged. Several furniture needed disassembly and reassembly. They accomplished that with ease. I had an unexpected issue with the first place I moved into and they came back the very next day to move me into my lovely new home. I'm still very upset about what happened with Akela moving company this weekend. I had scheduled my move two weeks in advance, and had a conversation with Akela himself, received the confirmation and everything. I arranged for a morning move as I had a family reunion in the afternoon/evening where I was to see all my family for the first time since the beginning of Covid. I organized everything thoroughly so the move would be quick and easy -- only to find out that they forgot to put me on the schedule and no movers were planning to come. The person on the phone was very apologetic and I understand it wasn't his fault -- but I just don't see how on earth this is acceptable. I ended up spending 8 hours (without any further communication from Akela moving about mover eta) carrying my own things up in multiple trips (see photo!) before they could get movers to me at 4:30 pm which meant I missed my entire reunion and lost a huge portion of the weekend that I had planned for unpacking. The company didn't try to do anything to offset what happened. In fact, because I had moved so much of my own stuff, the move took less than 3 hours and they STILL charged me the 3 hour minimum! I'm just in awe that this could be handled so horribly. Because of this I also am now having to turn in my keys later and incurring an extra charge from my landlord. This is just the worst moving experience I have ever had, and I cannot believe it happened. I chose Akela because I wanted to support a smaller business and I saw all the great reviews but clearly I made a mistake. (A note: this absolutely reflects on the office, the two guys that helped me were fantastic, very understanding of the situation, and hustling to help me move asap) read more

Searching for a good moving company in a large city can be very difficult. Companies are over priced, have hidden fees, or ride on their reputation to charge a lot of money. Personally, I'm fine with all of that, but when it came time to move from one end of the city to the other, the quotes were astronomical. This company was recommended to me by a close friend and I can't be happier with the way it went. They arrived early and parked the truck in place, then called exactly on time to let us know they were there. They let us know how long the process would be and they were exactly right with the estimate. They didn't overcharge for any of their services and they were kind, communicating well through the entire process. My roommate, who moved with another company, spent over four hours during her move and it was much more stressful. The only hiccup was they were supposed to arrive between 8am-10am but ended up getting to my place around 2:30pm.
