This new Spanish restaurant in the South Bay Area is a hit! I recently visited and was greeted with friendly service, followed by expert recommendations and lovely conversations. The ambiance is also very nice, they have comfy furniture and unique dish-ware. The food is incredible: we ordered four tapas plates and all four were flavorful and tasty! I cannot recommend the chicken skewers enough; they are tender, juicy, and have the perfect seasoning with a complimentary sauce. We have been to Spain multiple times and being Mexican I prefer the spice in my food but I must say Puerta was an exceptional local experience! The sangria and valencia sour drinks were excellent , the tapas were yummy and the seafood paella was well balanced with seafood ( although I prefer some socart) and a thin layer of rice. I was excited to learn that a Spanish restaurant was opening up in this area. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. First, when we walked in, they asked us if we had a reservation, when we told them that we didn't, they made us wait at the door even though there were plenty of tables. During our time there, the restaurant still had the same amount of empty tables, but okay. Having been to Spain a few times, i was looking forward to the wine. Unfortunately, the wine I selected from their menu was not available. Okay.. We ordered some tapas, all marked gluten-free since I'm celiac (serious gluten allergy). Our food came (still no drinks and our glasses of water are now empty) and as I start to taste, some of the dishes made me uneasy with couscous in one of the tapa dishes and a certain flavor in their version of a Romesco. After tasting, I asked the waiter if he could confirm that these dishes were all gluten free as stated in the menu. After asking he came back and said no (!!!). This is a major problem. A customer with allergies is put in danger if the menu doesn't properly inform of these allergens. It's irresponsible. The manager came by and he was blaming us for not reading more carefully when we clearly read GLUTEN-FREE and ordered those specific tapas for that reason. The food didn't taste Spanish to me. It was just bland flavors trying too hard to be something they are not. The most Spanish thing about my visit was Gypsy Kings playing in the background. Would not recommend and will not be going back. I'd rather make the trip to Berkeley and go to La Marcha, that's the real deal! read more

I had such high hopes for this place...unfortunately I had a really bad experience:( I understand it was busy due to it being dinner time, so the long wait time for food was expected. However, after placing our orders (2 salmon miso plates) only my mothers came out and it was extremely salty, I felt bad returning it but we had to. It wasn't edible at all. I continued to wait for my salmon plate and after almost an hour I asked where it was and the server said it would be another 30 minutes for me to put that order in. Extremely confused, I asked what he meant and if he had forgotten to put my order in. He admitted to not putting it in, and I will admit I was a bit frustrated (and hungry!) Overall, I felt the sliders, tapas, and salmon were all overpriced for the quality of the food. I will say though their mock tails were delicious. I think I would have appreciated a manager coming out and addressing the situation but the server was quite embarrassed after his mistake and avoided us afterward. Tried Puerta del Sol based on reviews and on where we were going to be that evening and we were not disappointed. No hurry atmosphere; a good place to wind down, relax, and enjoy a great meal. The service staff was very friendly and attentive. They made sure everything was to our satisfaction and gave us recommendations. We ordered the Croquettes, Grilled Octopus, and the Paella Negra paired with a glass of Spanish Tempranillo. In short, everything was fresh, flavorful, and delicious! This brought memories of our trip to Spain. We decided to order their recommended dessert, Torrija con Helado, a French toast style Brioche (made on site) topped with lots of yummy and a side of pistachio ice cream - no picture because we ate it. It was soooo good! We came for the paella but there are other offerings and specials on the menu. We will definitely return to try other items on the menu. My husband and I dined here this past weekend and are so happy we found this hidden gem! Lena was our server and was very attentive. We started with the Croquetas de Cochinita Pilbil appetizer, ( so pretty and delicious! ), a Spanish beer, and a festive glass of sangria. The sangria was spiced perfectly and came in a large wine glass filled to the brim with a flower on top. My entrée was the Pintxos de Pollo Morunos, grilled chicken thighs with two dipping sauces, and a lovely side salad. The chicken was very tender and flavorful, and I loved both of the dipping sauces. My husband's entrée was Cachopo Asturino, a fried stuffed steak with Serrano ham. It was topped with some sweet green peppers. So good!! It's hard to believe that you are dining in a strip mall because the ambience is so swanky and beautiful. I am absolutely thrilled to finally have an authentic Spanish restaurant near me. I say authentic because chef Jose is actually Spanish and has the cute "z" accent when speaking Spanish. The food is expertly cooked and a lot of attention to detail is evident. I have never had a more tender pulpo in my life and the smoky grilled notes were perfection. The surprise in this dish was that they served it atop a little square of potato pave-ooh lah lah!!! It also had a great sauce . The cogollos (Spanish for the inner part of the lettuce) is a great salad...it's a little gem that's grilled saucess sauces and anchovies! Very unique. The gambas al ajillo were delicious but the spicy notes were more forward than the garlic, this dish could use more garlic! The grilled bread that is served along the shrimp is perfect for scooping up the sauce. The ccroquettes were crispy, savory and creamy ver delicious. Another highlight was the lamb dish...this was nice because it definitely had a little Moroccan influence. It was served with Labneh, cous cous and a little arugula. I really enjoyed how they listened to our request to cook the lamb medium well...I can't stand a bloody lamb. I can't wait to go back. Honestly, the fflavors are just as good as T.B. (iykyk) and how exciting that Blossom Hill road is finally getting some good restaurants and not just sodium charged chain places. They also have a great selection of Spanish wines. I heard the place is Colombian owned, but there were no nods to Colombian food on the menu...they did however have a croquette stuffed with cochinita pibil, a Yucatan dish...did not try it, because I wanted to stick to authentic flavors. Now if we can get a bomb ass Peruvian spot down here!!! The spot where the restaurant is used to be an ice cream shop, we were sad to see that go but happy to welcome this place. My wife and I went here with my brother and his wife, who had chosen the restaurant. I ordered the NY steak. Everyone's order arrived, except mine, and our waiter told me a couple times it would be right up. Then 5 minutes later he told me the chef had overcooked my steak and was cooking another. Several minutes later, after everyone had almost finished their dinners, my steak tartar arrived. It was not medium, it was not medium rare (like I ordered) and it wasn't really even rare. It looked like it had been cooked about 1 minute per side. Since everyone was almost finished with their dinners I ate about half my beef jello rather than send it back. Oh, and nothing was comped for thier mishap. A free drink or appetizer might have gone a long way and avoided me writing this diatribe. Not going back. read more
