Came to Puka's a few times since they have been open. I've sat in all of the various types of seating. My favorite is the bar during the day. Great place to sit if you are alone or with one or two others. Outside is nicest in the late afternoon to evening. You can also get your food from around the mall/inside Whole Foods and bring it out with you if you don't want to order from their menu but still want a few drinks. I've eaten the fish and chips, burgers and fries. I've heard great things about the tacos and the pizzas as well. Wouldn't recommend the sushi since it's pretty average. But then comes the BEER. They have a pretty standard tap list for Hawaii bars. However, they have reliably good beers. If you are into craft beer, you aren't going to find anything new here. But again, they have a good stable list of drinkable beers and the happy hour/food + beer options are worth coming in for. I believe happy hour is $1 off beer from 2-5pm. read more

I'm sorta interested in how this place works. I see a lot of potential in not just Puka's and Whole Foods, but in a new way to invigorate life into a mall entrance. Let's get into Puka's entrance, which is sort of unassuming. It's a bit dark inside and you can't really tell what it is, but then you find out the seating area outside the mall is seating area for Puka's and for anyone. Each table outside has a block that indicates if you want service or not. I really found this layout interesting! The entrance to the mall is now crowded and filled with life. Let's get into the food. I tried the fish and chips and BLT. I noticed they had a nice selection of beers, ciders, and wines. I wanted soda and I tried the Onopops strawberry soda. I must say, it was rather tasty. I'm guessing, but it really must be strawberry puree, because it tasted like strawberries to me. The fish and chips were a little disappointing. I'm not a fish and chips expert here, but the fish pieces were small and I only got 3 pieces. The batter is very similar to corn dog batter. The real star was the BLT. The BLT had a deep fried green tomato with bacon and lettuce. I'm no healthy eater, but damn this is worth getting! It's damn near impressive for a guy like me to say that. Even without the bacon, it would be a great sandwich, but bacon always improves any dish. Puka's is associated with Whole Foods, so I'd have to assume Puka's excels in healthy options and not fish and chips. I didn't try their other dishes, but I have high hopes for them. It was a little odd seeing unhealthy options like fish and chips and burgers. There's a great burger joint just a hop, skip, and jump away, so I found a burger offering odd, but they do offer vegetarian burger, which I might just have to try... I came into whole foods just trying to find some supplies for dinner. I saw the little restaurant, bar tucked away and knew I had to try it. As soon as I sat down I was immediately helped by the bartender. Sadly they were out of this cider I wanted to try on tap but the bartender was able to recommend a beer for me that I loved. (And I'm not much of a beer drinker) I also saw they had a nice assortment of wines. I will have to try them at a different time. I also ordered the steak. Oh man. Went in today with a big order. The woman who took my order SARAH didn't bother to take out paper and pen. She repeated what i ordered correctly. However, she rang it up wrong. I specifically ordered truffle fries in which she repeated it back yet I did not get it. I ordered one keiki chicken strips and one keiki burger in which she repeated but I got 2 chicken strips. Both of the keiki strips that were given were so hard we couldn't even bite into it. First, she tries to take my big order without writing it down. Then she messes it up. Then the food is horrible. Not worth the $70 I spent just for lunch. So disappointed and upset. read more

Pretty cool place inside of whole foods. A nice little chill place to grab a quick lunch or dinner. Fast service, nice place to sit and food was pretty good. Got the big kahuna burger, fish and chips and a chicken and fries from the Keiki menu. Everything was good and not too oily. Lots of beers on draft and you can buy it to go as well if you buy one of their reusable jugs. I am usually not one to give a bad rating but this place was nowhere near satisfactory. My boyfriend and I went to try out their food and have drinks. It was a little busy but we were able to find seats as soon as we got there. Service was a little inconsistent as there were times when the waitress would not show up and times where she would always be there but we weren't ready to order. The food selections aren't too vast but has simple bar food like burgers and wings. My boyfriend ordered the deal of the day which was a pub burger with a draft beer and I ordered the local greens with herbed avocado salad. To our dismay, both entrees were hard to swallow. My salad was extra oily (should have asked for the olive oil on the side since they drenched it) and just to add protein, I paid $5 for chicken (which seems like a rip-off). I felt like the flavors of the salad did not coincide harmoniously and really made a bad impression of the dish. We hoped that the burger would at least be decent, however the patty was so salty that it was hard to even try and eat it. To make up for this, we ordered some buffalo wings which were still not up to par. I was extremely disappointed with the food and would definitely not recommend this place for a date night. Though Puka's has its own menu, what I really like is that you can buy food inside Whole Foods and bring it into Puka's to eat. Bonus: I can then order up a beer, enjoy my food, and watch whatever game is on. I've found that if service seems slow, it's for this reason...staff isn't always clear if you're just sitting in the space to eat your Whole Foods food or if you really want to order something. So best make strong eye contact or wave down a server to get your order started. I find after that everything moves along normally. read more

I've enjoyed every single item I've tried here! We really enjoy going to Pukas on the way home it's casual, and I love the outdoor environment. The food and drinks are so delicious! I recommend a wine flight rather than a single glass! Pukas used to be our absolute favorite! And we visited frequently for its convenience and delicious food! However, they changed the menu completely, and took everything that was popular off'. There are no longer any sandwiches (they were all amazing), no pizza, (also good). The new menu is completely different with nothing even similar to the old. All the employees states that all the customers have Ben complaining, so why wouldn't they switch back? There wasn't a single thing on the menu to even try and many people were turning away. Not only us. So sad. Went on a Wine down Weds were all the wine is $2 off. I started off with the prosecco, it was nice, not too dry & slightly fruity but not sweet. The tables inside are mostly counter space with one large picnic/cafe table in the middle. We sat there. There are also seats outside that they can serve you at. We decided to share our meal. We ordered the cops with guacamole & side hummus, truffle fries, Caesar salad, & the spicy shrimp roll. The chips were nice and crunchy, I believe they were baked. And the guacamole I loved, it had a little kick to it. The hummus was normal, nothing really good or bad. The truffle fries were yummy they had shredded parmesan cheese, but anything with truffle is Good. The Caesar salad was good and different. It came with a poached egg, I liked that I could mix it in. The sushi was a for piece roll. The seafood was fresh and I liked the aioli topper. I don't think I would call it spicy though. For my second drink I had a cucumber Collins. My friends was super well balanced between sweet and cucumber-ness. The one I ordered seemed to be stronger in the alcohol and sweetness, they should shoot for the first way. We always look in when we are doing our grocery shopping but this time we thought we'd actually give it a try. First of all, our server was Cherese. She was great. Friendly, attentive and helpful. Now on to the food. We ordered the Local Greens with Herbed Avocado salad, the Cauliflower Nachos and the Avocado toast. I only tasted a bit of the Herbed Avocado salad. To me, it was too citrusy sour. But that was only a tiny bite so don't take that as a true evaluation. The Cauliflower Nachos...now that's a different take. Despite cauliflower being on my "I'll eat it if it is there" list, it was pretty good. The plate was HUGE! OMG, that is a lot of cauliflower. But it was crispy and the dressing they put on it was really delicious. I would order of cup of the dressing and drizzle it on everything. I bet the napkin would be awesome dipped in that sauce. But here is where the dish didn't work for me. It was a bit heavy. Didn't seem greasy, at least on the outside. But after about 3 pieces, I was done. The other part was the slices of raw jalapeno (with membrane and seeds). One slice in a single bite is quite a mouthful of fire. Don't get me wrong. I think the raw jalapeno was the way to go with this dish (as opposed to pickled or canned) because it was fresh, crunchy and packed a punch. But maybe if it was diced and put on the side so you could control the heat, that would have been good. Now for the Avocado Toast. To me, this was NOT a good dish. It was beautiful to look at, especially with those "sweety" peppers. But it just did not work. There was just too much going on. It had avocado, the "sweety" peppers, pistachios and sliced radishes. The ingredients were too disparate and did not mesh at all. It also combined all kinds of weird textures. The bread was chewy and very seedy (which I really like but not with avocado toast), the pistachios were hard, not crunchy, the peppers were squishy (I know you're asking, what does that mean?) and the radish was just sorta there. And the flavors just didn't work. There were so many peppers and they have such a strong taste that they completely overpowered everything else. I tried just the avocado and the toast. Not very much flavor. Thumbs down for this dish. You want an excellent avocado toast - go to Moena Cafe. Theirs is the best. Simple, elegant, no weird embellishments and totally spot on in flavor. Looking at the various menu items, it seems their philosphy is throw as many things in one dish as you can and hope it works. Look at some of their sushi. My tastebuds were overwhelmed just reading the ingredament listing. What they should do is let the food shine by keeping things simple but executing it flawlessly. 2 drinks, one kids meal and one charcuterie platter + tip = $50.00. The amount of food and quality of food was not worth the price. The seating area is uncomfortable, it's chaotic and loud. I thought it would be catered more towards adults but you have shared space with tweens who are bumping into you as you eat. It wasn't the most pleasant dining environment. The workers were rushing around and you almost feel bad for them - the distance between the restaurant and the furtherest table is pretty far. However the Justin Sauvignon Blanc was light and refreshing on a somewhat hot day. I was torn between sushi and the burger but went the burger route. Sushi probably would have been a better match for the drink I chose but I went with the burger. Oh wow. Delightful. I could barely fit it in my mouth, and even done medium well it was sooooo juicy. Really inconsistent. I often get a taro burger, and about half the time it is so undercooked it is mush. Sometimes fries are not even cooked through. Seems like they need some better trained cooks or quality control? It happens more than it should. That said, some of the bartenders are really friendly and helpful, and they have a nice selection of beer and good happy hour specials. It is quick, convenient, and healthier than most bar food. The Avocado toast and regular burger are some of the better options and the salad is good (and big too). My last question is why there are only 5 chairs at such a long bar? Seems like a weird use of space and most people seem to want to sit at the bar or big table. With a little more care, this could be a more welcoming space with more consistent food. Would rate Puka's at 3.5 stars. First, the positives. The food here is pretty decent. We ordered a variety of sushi---the salmon and avocado roll, which was so-so; the firecracker roll, which was good; and the tiger roll, which was also pretty good. Also ordered the sweet potato fries---an absolute must!---and the dry rub chicken wings, which are kind of addictive. Followed this up with the kale Caesar salad. The reason for the 3.5 rating? When my date and I first entered it took awhile for anyone to acknowledge our presence, even though we were clearly waiting for a table that needed to be cleared off. When our waitress finally did clear our table and seat us, she seemed less than enthused and pretty much remained that way for the duration of our stay. Basically, poor bedside manner. We stopped by on a weekday evening. My other half and I had been once before and I recall enjoying their Bloody Mary with the corn dog and other fun fixings. The Bloody Mary while still good was much less exciting this time with the corn dog being gone. We ordered a ton of food because I like to take leftovers home for subsequent meals. The cauliflower nachos were crisp, tasty, nicely salted but a bit mushy in the middle which I'm not sure was intentional or not. We had the wings which were fine but nothing to write home about. The taco and beer special was pretty decently priced and the tacos tasted okay considering it's Hawaii and we don't have great tacos like the mainland (I miss you LA and LV tacos). Fish and chips were good and the truffle fries were tasty and decently crispy. What I didn't appreciate was sitting for about close to half an hour with no check-in from our server... someone else had to ask if we were finished and was able to get us some boxes... she also cashed us out. This is my pet peeve... if you're busy I totally get it, if you're training new people or you are super new, I can be cool with that... say something, say sorry we are super slammed (seemed like in this instance, you weren't) or our computer is giving us issues, but don't just ignore or not tend to your table that had an empty drink for a good 15 minutes and untouched food for another 10. I love the beer selection at Whole Foods and I love the food as well. They should combine the two and make a restaurant pub so you can have drinks with your meal. Oh wait.. they did, and that's why I'm writing this review. We only came here once but, The FOOD we tried on this occasion was very good for the price. We decided on the Taco appetizer which comes with your choice of Kalua Pig, beef, or Fish. I decided to get one of each and my favorite was the fish. We also got the Kahala BLT which I liked as well. The fresh bread & perfectly cooked crispy bacon was the star of this sandwich. We also ordered the cheese pizza for my son and it's pretty much the same quality as the pizza you get inside the market. Based on what we tried so far, the food is a solid 4 stars . As for the BEER, we decided to get two 10 dollar flight samplers. Each sampler comes with 4 four ounce samples of any beer on their list as long as its the price of the beer is 10 dollars or less. I'm not going to explain every beer that we got since there were 8 samples between the two of us but I was most impressed with the Lanikai Porter. The SERVICE was good with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Let me just add that they were fairly busy during our time there. The ENVIRONMENT is perfect and fits the needs of anyone. They have televisions for the sports fans, modern decor for the hipsters, outside seating for the fresh air people, and counter seating for the single people. But the best part is the amount of seats that are available and it's kid friendly. I asked the waiter if alcoholic drinks could be served outside and he said yes, as long as they serve the drinks to you. I think Chili's Bar and Grill Kahala has some competition, especially with the liquor being served here! Puka's @ Whole Foods Market Kahala is a new pop up swanky little restaurant that is kind of a mix of a nightclub ambiance, yet casually enough to be a small restaurant / coffee shop decor but serving alcohol. I just had to check this place out with friends, since I live about a mile up the road from Kahala Mall anyway. It felt like being in a Starbucks, but a little bit more stylish and the lighting was dimmed for a better atmosphere for friends, good food, and a fun time. It was a crowded affair, since we were there at 7:30pm on a recent Friday night and it was pretty tight. We had to wait around the mall till space opened up and it was quite a long wait. Best tip is to get here early, due to it being a new place and everyone wants to check things out. Or if you wait till the hype dies down, that would be good too. For me, it's a good alternative venue and option to get your liquor on in a social atmosphere in Kaimuki / Kahala. Puka's @ Whole Foods Kahala seems to be expanding their food products and services into a full fledge restaurant. The more savory options you would find here are rather good and tasty, but certainly not cheap either. I guess the prices here are in line with other places that serve each entree at about $11 average. My friends and I got a table near the back of the pop up restaurant, with some views of Whole Foods Market. Yes, it's a pretty small place, but excellent for your private social gatherings that are sure to delight your friends and out of towner's. Puka's @ Whole Foods Market Kahala is located next door to WF and right outside the Kahala Mall's main entrance - next to the Starbucks. The parking here is spacious and may be limited, since it's shared by all tenants of the Kahala Mall. Some in the front structure, as others are remaining in the back of the mall, but you'd have to walk a bit. Like Whole Foods, Puka's accepts major credit cards, which is always a plus. Needless to say that my experience here was pretty average, albeit the semi nightclub atmosphere with the lighting. I get what vibe they are trying to go for, but it ain't me. I opted for the oyster po boy, since that caught my eye first on the menu and it made me remember my killer time in New Orleans in 2012. I added the Cajun fries, which is usually already a crowd favorite and the lanikila 808 imperial beer, which sounded interesting and intriguing. Plus it was comparably cheaper than some of the others. As a general rule, I should be enjoying these delicious treats, but I found out that it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I've had better. Although the Cajun fries could have been seasoned better, the portion size was adequate. I forgot to take photos of the food before eating, since I was already hungry and didn't think. Story of my life sometimes. The oyster po boy was pretty good. Average tasting, but the sandwich itself was more of a appetizer type of thing, versus an actual whole sandwich, like how they do in New Orleans. The lanikila imperial brew was tasty and satisfying to an adequate okay meal. I wasn't too happy with it, but neither disappointed with it either. It was just okay. The service here was a little weird, having that green / red deal on the tables, signaling to the wait staff to say that you want help or not. The service was confusing at first, but thankful I read the reviews before coming. The service received www adequate and friendly, but that was usually it. The saving grace was that it was healthy enough and the prices were fair. And that, I was close to home, if need be. Still, I'd recommend this place if you are looking for a different vibe or venue that's closer to home or just in the area for shopping or otherwise. Pukas has arguably the best hamburger on the island! Besides the grass-fed beef, they make their own bread, which since it's a third of your burger has a lot to do with the meal. Fish Tacos on Tuesday are fantastic. My wife and I had come in for Kalua Pig tacos, but the chef was just cooking a fresh fillet for the tacos, and he said we definitely shouldn't miss what he was cooking. And he was right! So ono! Of all the great things that they serve here, though, I think the chicken wings are the best of all. A pound of chicken wings for $12, dry rubbed with salt, and with options of Ranch, BBQ, hot sauce, or all three :-) fantastic! They have great beers on tap, daily specials on various beers, a variety of wines, and of course televisions everywhere so you can watch multiple games at the same time. Happy hour is from 4-6 and they have an extensive variety of beers if you are into beers. My boyfriend and I had cauliflower nachos, Martha's wings, truffle fries and the crab sushi. The crab sushi wasn't my favorite, it has a weird taste to it so my boyfriend had to finish it for me and said that it was just ok. However, I did enjoy the cauliflower nachos it had nice flavors to it, outside was crispy and reasonably price!! Truffle fries was my favorite came out nice, crispy and moist super delicious! I give it 5 stars for beer, but don't eat the food if you don't want to get sick. I'm only writing this post because i warned the manager of the problem they changed the chef only to get another with the same problem. The problem is the chef will grab raw meat,chicken with his hands and touch everything else without changing his gloves. He is supposed to use tongs or change his glove after handling raw meat. Puka's is the love child of a bar and a restaurant. There are people watching football, eating, drinking or studying. It's totally cool if I told someone I was at Puka's all day Saturday and they wouldn't judge. Now if I told them I was at some other bar all day on Saturday they would think I had a problem. We had the salmon roll, avocado roll and the beet salad. The portions are pretty small in comparison to the price. My two rolls came out to about $10 and I was hungry after. If I had gone somewhere else, I probably would need to be rolled home. The fish and sushi was fresh as was the salad. I'm particular about my beets and didn't think they spent too much time making sure it would taste good. The quinoa was flavorless and a bit hard. Overall, the food was simply average but luckily the space earned it another star. read more

The place although it's small and pretty warm, it has a hip atmosphere with outdoor seating. The menu looked very good because of the different types of dishes they have - bar foods, hamburgers, and appetizers. But they aren't typical dishes, they are prepared with extra garnishes which makes them stand out from your usual bar. An awesome wine and beer selection with some samplers if you'd like. Oh, if you're a German beer fan they do serve some Hefeweizen beers which I do like. They do have daily specials which will probably give me an excuse to come back. A plus is the outdoor seating which can be a bit confusing if you've never been there before. They have blocks with two colors, green (for service) and brown (no service, just hanging out). One of our favorite taco Tuesday hangouts. Mainly here for good beer. Food.....mediocre. Option to get food from Whole Foods and bring over. Fish tacos are normally drenched in a wet mayo based slaw. It has improved over the last 2 years, but still somewhat drenched. Nice addition is the avocado dressing. Most wait staff are super sweet. Probably why I keep going. read more

Whole foods has a restaurant now? Complete with beer on tap and everything?! And even happy hour and a special of the day everyday?! Man, I thought whole foods already took most of our money, but Puka, I give you the go-ahead. Go ahead and take my money, please. I just recently had a date night outing here after a stressful and hot day at work, so I was very happy to relax with my flight of beers, oh, and of course with my boyfriend (he he). We got the sampler of beers, which were four 4 ounce glasses of any kind of beer that was on their menu. I tried this pineapple cider and twas delish! The rest kind of were a blur, heh. To add to our flight of beers, we went all out on ordering food. The waiter was super friendly and nice and helpful but prolly thought that we were piggies; after all a plate of sesame ginger salad, along with a kahuna burger, BLT sandwich, an order of regular fries, and order of sweet potato fries, and another side order of truffle fries to be shared between two of us would warrant Piggie status. Salad used real ginger and tofu that were nicely flavored with the dressing. The salad was not your normal iceberg or romaine lettuce. Twas fancy. My kahuna burger was the real winner, as the avocado slices added a mice touch the perfectly grilled burger. But the real MVPs of this meal was the fries. Cooked to a perfect crisp, topped with truffle oil and some cheese were delish. Don't even get me started on the sweet potato fries with their wasabi sauce (make sure you ask for this stuff). The normal fries were winning as well but not as special as the other two. All in all, take my money, Whole Foods. Darn it. Haha. read more

Unfortunately did not get the opportunity to eat here, me and my roommate walked in excited to try their charcuterie board and get some other apps. We sat at the bar and the first man was very nice and greeted us and gave us menus. The second man was so rude to us. We told him we wanted the charcuterie board and he said they they don't even have it on the menu and then said people never order it and then said if we want it that it would take a very long time to make. He continued to mention how everything on the menu was trash and that we should get burgers. We thought he was joking but he wasn't. We felt uncomfortable and decided to just go to Whole Foods and make our own charcuterie board at home. Im sure their food is fine but the service was so bad tht we feel uncomfortable to go back to even try the food. That man needs to work on his customer service and this is coming from someone who is a server. I don't usually write reviews but I'm so put off by the service from the second man. read more

Popped in a few weeks ago for their soft opening and I was very impressed. It took us a bit to realize that it was seat yourself. We had a few questions on the menu, and while the servers didn't have all of the answers, they were able to get me the information that I wanted relatively quickly. Unfortunately, we were a little strapped on time to order a full meal. Instead, we had an order of sushi and the truffle fries. A yes and a definite yes! For drinks, we each ordered a flight. I had a flight of beer and my friend had a flight of wine. Can't wait to come back! read more

Another great place to try is Puka's in Kahala Mall. The Burger there is one of the best ones I've had. Also the Fish and Chips is always fresh and cooked to perfection. The Wings are also excellent along with their Sweet Potato Fries. The only thing I won't recommend is their Sushi Rolls. But everything else is really good!!! read more
