BEST ICE CREAM IN CINCINNATI Putz's is clear across town for me and my husband, but now that I've had it I can't wait to come back. Their vanilla soft serve is the creamiest, most delicious soft serve ever. I got a small cone with crunch ($2.50), and it was basically all I ever wanted in an ice cream cone. My husband got a medium chocolate milk shake ($3.50) and it was suuuper chocolatey and the perfect consistency (not too thick, not too thin). It's a CASH ONLY walk up window, with outdoor seating. The girls working there were nice, and we had no problem finding a parking spot in their lot. There was a drunk guy sleeping on one of their benches (it was around 2pm on a Saturday, so....that's not good), but other than that the rest of the people eating here were just families enjoying their ice cream on the picnic tables in the shade. No seriously, there is a picture of me in my stroller in Putz's parking lot circa 1983. My mother went there when she was in high school because why? Well, my grandmother took her there when she was a baby. Yeah this place is chock-full of family history 0for me. So being a westsider I got stuck in my ways. Blue Ice Man and a Footlong Cheese Coney with onions no mustard please! (Oh yeah and when I was little I could not finish a footlong I went for whatever had gumball eyes on it!) Dare I say it... I think their cheese coney gives Skyline a run for its money. And that is saying ALOT! Life was great when I would come home from school only to find that mom had stopped by Putz's on the way home and picked up a bag of 10 or so ice cream sandwiches! Putz's in my own freezer!? Wow! Frick I love this place! So five stars? Dude it is Putz's. As the sign says established in 1938,. Yes that is when the nation was in the throes of the great depression. I kept driving by this place on the way home, laughing at the name, and telling myself that some day I would stop. Purportedly "putz" is Yiddish for the male member, but I've always understood it to mean, "schmuck," or, "jerk," so it intrigued me that someone would name their ice cream stand, "Putz." But thanks to the fine reviews here, I understood that it was a family name and I knew I had to go. Lo' and behold, it's purty dang good. I came here with the mom and the lil sis. This place has been around forever, and I can remember coming here once or twice as a small child - but it's been awhile! We all got cones, in different varieties. I got the blue "smurf" ice cream (you can get blue smurf ice cream without having to go to kiddie land at Kings Island!!!!) dipped in chocolate, lil sis got chocolate vanilla swirl and our mom got vanilla and orange sherbert stacked. Yum! This was an unexpectedly delicious, quick, cheap lunch. The veggie burger was a standard frozen burger, as expected, but somehow way better than what I make it at home. Tip: Adults can get kids' size, too, and it's $1.50 for a small, satisfying treat. There isn't any indoor seating. Most people were sitting on the picnic tables or in their cars. After long walks in nearby Mt. Airy Forest, this is the place to go. It tends to be crowded in the peak evening and weekend hours, but has great ice cream, variety and average prices. At least the area around the shop lends itself to getting away from the traffic. There are picnic tables set up under trees for a little shade while eating. It was a pleasant surprise to see a friend from years ago- still manning the Creamy Whip. That says a lot for a place that after more than 10 years, the same employee works there. I recommend taking a trip off interstate 74 at Montana exit and enjoying your favorite ice cream treat. My guess is that they have it or will make it happen for you. read more

When I was a kid it was a pretty big deal to be taken to Dairy Queen for an ice cream parfait. In fact, I have few memories of even being taken. We were poor, but that wasn't it - it was because Dairy Queen was supposed to be special. Sure we had ice cream at home, and we had nuts and sometimes there was a jar of fudge topping in the house, but none of that mattered. I haven't felt that way again until today, my first visit to the beloved Putz's Creamy Whip. It's a tiny little joint literally just off I-74, about 10 miles from downtown Cincinnati. I expected the parking lot to be packed but there was a heavy storm rolling in and folks were taking their whips to go. We ordered a hot mett coney with cheese (delightful) and a cheeseburger (average) so that we could pretend that we'd eaten a decent lunch before we ate our "Par-Fay"s as Putz's calls them. Within a second it was Dairy Queen all over again, but better. The ice cream was better, sure, but the ambiance was better too. A bucolic little parking lot just off the interstate? You bet your life it's better. I'll not soon forget standing before the front of a massive summer thunderstorm, my skirt fluttering in the hot wind and a Par-Fay ready to eat at hand. read more

If there is one thing that Cincinnatians love as much as their chili, it would have to be soft serve ice cream. Each neighborhood seems to have at least one free-standing ice cream stand called either a creamy whip, whippy dip, or something similar. Two weeks ago I found myself at Putz's Creamy Whip, one of the most famous of all the local shops. The business started way back in 1938, and though they have moved locations a few times, the current location has been in service for around sixty years. According to their website's history page, the construction of I-74 in the early 70s nearly forced them out of the current location as the highway was supposed to come within three feet of their back door. The owner's were able to convince the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration to move the highway nine feet back to save the location. Later, in 1987, the street the store was on was renamed to Putz Place. So this ice cream stand is legendary for many reasons. Following the lead of my wife's family, I ordered a medium size Krunch Cone with vanilla and chocolate swirl ice cream. Krunch was a combination of sprinkles and some sort of crunchy bits similar to what you would find in the chocolate of a Nestlé Crunch. Now there is a good idea, I wonder if I could get them to dip this into chocolate after covering it with krunch. Even without the chocolate coating this ice cream hit the spot. read more

This is a fun (cash only!) ice cream shop that is very popular, even on a Wednesday night. The most iconic item is the dip-top ice cream cone. They only have 4-5 flavors of ice cream, one of which is the chocolate-vanilla swirl and about 4-5 flavors of dip. They will let you try dip flavors if you're unsure of which to get. I got the birthday cake dip on swirl ice cream. The ice cream is exactly how you would think a place like "creamy whip" would make ice cream. It's light, fluffy, and crazy smooth. He told me to go to Putz's Creamy Whip for their foot long coney and something called a Blue Iceman... I'm thinking... I had chili dogs for lunch, don't know about having another one for dinner. So, I did some research on the place... established in 1938... This place has been there for 79 years? Now I'm a bit intrigued... they renamed the street to Putz Place? Locals line up in droves? Alright alright... I'll give it a go. I had 2 chili coneys for lunch, and then had a Putz's Footlong Coney for dinner... and it still gets 5 stars. I think I'm starting to like Cincinnati style chili. I posted a few pics (The Blue Iceman pic is for you Chuckie G) but I forgot to take a pic of the Coney. By the time I realized it, I was more than halfway through it. Mmmm mmm. I don't know what it is about the ice cream they make here, but it is fantastic! Rich, thick, creamy goodness. I was tempted to go back in line and get a malt afterwards, but figured I may have to tailor my suits to fit the pants if I keep eating like this... so I'll save that for next time I'm in town. Hands down, the best creamy whip in the city! Alright now that I've gotten that out of the way... Putz's is an institution here in Cincinnati. Family owned and operated and serving delicious delights for decades. They do soft serve, so we're not talking 31 flavors here, just vanilla and chocolate. But you can get cones, or cyclones (aka blizzards), shakes, sundaes, or any other ice cream concoction. In fact they'll even create something new if you ask nicely. My brother-in-law gets a Mountain Dew shake! You can also get your hot dogs and hamburgers, BBQ, nachos and other "ballpark" food. But its the ice cream that keeps me coming back.
