This summer, the whole family set out on a quest to explore the wide number of creamy whips in the Cincinnati area (or whippy dips, depending on what tickles your fancy). We had, admittedly, been to Putz's before. It's location near Mt. Airy Forest is pretty convenient to our downtown abode. There is very little better than a warm summer evening at the park followed by ice cream. But I digress. Putz's is old reliable and has had a great, long history in Cincinnati. I highly recommend going to their page and reading more. Overall, it's nothing fancy, but yet, it's exactly what you want. A great variety of food and frozen treats. Friendly staff. Great prices. Big portions. A collection of benches and picnic tables to sit at. It's familiar and comfortable and wonderful. My favorite treat? The pineapple shortcake sundae. Super moist yellow cake, vanilla ice cream, and a heap pineapple topping. It's amazing. A close second? The turtle sundae. It's big and it's loaded with toppings. I grew up near Putz's, and spend quite a bit of loose change there every summer. Not much on the menu you wouldn't expect at any creamy whip, but done well. Their soft serve is the best around, and the standard I measure all the malts I've had since by. Few things to watch out for though: they are cash only, and the lot is small. Watch for youths. Go after a hike in Mt. Airy, and try all the flavors you wouldn't normally go for. It's priced to experiment. read more

I am not much of a year-round ice cream eater, but when soft serve joints such as Putz's open for the warm season, I'm there as soon as I can--ordering the smallest, kids-sized chocolate/vanilla swirl cone with chocolate sprinkles. And the final bite of the bottom of the cone with the ice cream-filled grid is the absolute best part! Man, I need it again soon. The simple pleasure of a standard cone--as only done right by the seasonals, in my opinion--and it had been a while since I got to go to Putz's. Geographically, it's much easier for me to head to Mt. Healthy Dairy Bar (which is also really, really good), but there is something even better about Putz's, which is located further on the west-side of town (though I wouldn't necessarily consider it "Westside"), just off of the Montana exit of I-74. My big thing, especially with pizza and ice cream, is that an ice cream parlor should be judged based on its ability to master the basics, and Putz's absolutely does just that. Anything that's been around since 1938 is guaranteed goodness. Located right off the Montana Avenue exit on I-74, Putz is known for a lot more than ice cream. The cheese coney beat out Skyline and the other big names in the Best of Cincinnati contest. I had to order it, and I agree. The bun is soft, the chili sweet and the cheddar cheese is so light and fluffy. If you're here, get a coney first then get ice cream! Speaking of, I've had a few treats here and they've all been delicious. The Turtle Sundae is layered with vanilla soft serve, caramel, and pecans. The chocolate shake is creamy, refreshing, and my go-to item. What makes this creamy whip so good? Peek through the window and see the giant, silver ice cream machine. What can I say "I LOVE THIS PLACE"!!!!!!! Not being from Cincinnati and not ever having ventured to the west side (Is this considered the west side?) I had never heard of Putz, or Putzes as I always call it. A co-worker of mine introduced me to this little gem tucked along Highway 74. I believe its considered Mt. Airy or Northside. It has all the charm that a small town Ice Cream place is supposed to have. I am so happy that the same family has continued to operate it after all these years. The soft serve ice cream is great! Its a great cheap lunch place during the day. All the food has I've tried has been good and priced very well. Don't go expecting to spend a fortune. They don't have indoor seating but there is a large grass lot and picnic tables. If you are looking to re-experience the little ice cream shop that no longer is open in your community I highly recommend coming here. It has all the nostalgia of a small town ice cream shop. Sadly it's the beginning of the #coronavirus & we can not go out to visit friends and family or to the many museums, family and community activities, shows, concerts, restaurants and all the other places that makes life enjoyable for us. However, we can reflect on the many fun things we have done and will do again and the people that mean so much to us! This lead me to the memories of the many times I went to Putz's Creamy Whip since I moved to Northside where my daughter was raised. It is a delicious institution to the citizens of Northside and also a favorite of many other people in neighboring communities. Although it is listed as being in Cumminsville on their web site I consider it to be a part of Northside! I went here often with my daughter to enjoy creamy soft serve treats during the summer and warm spring and early fall evenings and afternoons. They are open on a seasonal basis normally in mid March and closing in mid September. Nestled near a small cluster of trees at an intersection of roads that reminds me of something you'd see while on a peaceful country drive. The place is always busy with customers waiting to buy a cheese coney, burger, veggie cheese burger, cold soda or a cold and delicious soft serve treat from the late afternoon into the evening. There are two order windows with friendly young employees to assist you so any line moves fairly quick. There is a small amount of parking available in the lot that goes around the back & then to the other side. People can also park on the right side of the road just past their entrance. Their lot is shaded by trees on the right so you can often enjoy your food at a picnic table or just eating in your car in the shade. it's a great treat for everyone to come here. Carryout is also a good way to add some fun to your day. You can get your soft serve staples here like malts and shakes, parfaits, slushes, banana splits, dipped cones, cyclones, glaciers and sundaes. I am a fan of the turtle sundae with whip cream and pecans and their glaciers a mixture of an icy and soft serve in cherry, grape & orange which my daughter always liked to get. The cyclones were also good but often seemed a little lite on the mixings near the bottom unlike UDF. Extra mixings are available for an additional price. Nice little gem. I got a vanilla cone with the krunch coat. I grew up on the crunch coat and thought it was gone. Happy to see someone who has it. I came back a second time and got a chili dog with ketchup, mustard, and onions. I loved it. They don't have your normal Cincinnati chili. This is a thicker chili, but a lot of flavor. This is a chili dog you'd expect in most other cities. I love Skyline, but not being from Cincinnati you just want a normal chili dog sometimes. Only negative was the bun completely fell apart. May be a good idea to steam them. I didn't care much that it fell apart though. If food is really good, I don't care if it's messy. read more

So my brother and his family LOVE this place. They L. O. V. E. it. It's a Cincinnati thing I think, and more specifically, a west-side thing. I don't see Putz's being substantially better or worse than any other ice cream stand with food that I've been to anywhere else. That said, it's worth checking out if you're close by. The good - there are numerous picnic tables at which you can relax. They're next to a big open grass area where kids and dogs can run around and play. Prices are low. For a few bucks you can get a yummy ice cream treat or a burger or a spicy brat (I recommend that last one - delicious and surprisingly spicy). The young ladies working the counter are friendly and patient. The bad - parking is tight and minimal. We went on a Sunday afternoon and the joint was jumpin'. It can take a long time to get your order (ours did, anyway - course, we had like 9 people) and they screwed it up, too. I like Putz's well enough to go back if my nieces really want to go when we're at my brother's house on the west side. I don't like it enough to seek it out when there are at least 4 similar little places within a mile or two of my house (not on the west side). Also, for some reason I think it's cash only, too. Hit an ATM on the way (they don't accept credit), and come hungry, so you can enjoy some hot food (the footlong hotdogs are phenomenal) before indulging in their delicious soft serve and plentiful other dessert options. In my book, it's not truly summer until Putz's opens up for the year. I don't care that all the local pools are open, it's 85 degrees, and everyone is wearing flip-flops. If Putz's isn't open yet, then summer is just a myth, shrouded in wishful thinking. Ok, ok, enough musing on the elusive definition of summer. Back to the reason we've gathered here today: dreamy, creamy soft serve. Putz's is a Cincinnati tradition dating back to 1938. In fact, my grandmother actually remembers when there were horses in the field next to Putz's! I've been going with family members ever since I can remember and have great memories of chasing fireflies in the small field by the picnic tables, waiting for the adults to finish their cones. After 23 summers of visiting this family owned shop, I have sampled almost everything on the menu. Chocolate malts, peanut butter sundaes, black raspberry shakes, banana splits, popsicles, and the famous soft serve. It's all excellent. If you're looking for artisanal strawberry balsamic gelato on a gourmet cone, this isn't the place for you. I love ice cream. I love local places. Hence, I love Putz's. There is just something about this place that makes you feel like you are 5. So much so that I ordered a small cone with sprinkles. After I inhaled that I moved on to one of my favorites: The Chocolate Peanut butter Shake. I was interested to see how their shake would stack up to the multitude of others I have had over the years. It was made with their soft serve that is so creamy and delicious it should be illegal. It was probably the best Chocolate Peanut butter shake I have ever had.... and I have had a lot of them. I was worried this place would not live up to its hype, but I worried for no reason. I am glad I got there today since they close for the winter tomorrow. But not to worry, I will be there too much for my own waistline come next summer. read more

OMG! A family institution! My family has been going to Putz's since I was about 3 years old... and that was a long, long, long time ago! We even pulled up here in a limo on my Grandpa's 60th birthday... We told everyone that Tom Jones was in the limo.... As I child I love the Ice Lady and Man... Think slush puppy with soft serve ice cream on top and a candy face... It was blue-tongued goodness! Today I can't get enough of their blizzards! Always plenty of candy throughout... no 3 inches of plain soft serve at the bottom. It is always busy, but the line moves fast. They have a decent amount of seating, which rarely is completely filled. The only downside is that it is kind of hard to find... Hidden behind a mini-mart off the Montana I-74 exit. Nothing I love more than stopping here after work to grab a really cheap footlong chili dog for dinner. The chocolate shakes and ice cream flurries are also top notch. I have to give them credit. I've been coming here for 20 years now even when I had to ride my bike several miles as a kid to get there and the quality has never changed. This place is a family owned and operated creamy-whip that has been running since before I was born. After hearing time and time again, "YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO PUTZ'S!" We decided to make the trip there. Nestled on the corner of an intersection this place was busier than half the restaurants around. They have food, pop, and delicious ice cream treats! Anything you could think of they had. We ordered an orange glacier and a cherry dip top. The glacier was just okay it was mixed. Ice cream people you know what I mean right? My boyfriend likes to scoop the icee and the softserve together himself but he said it was still good. The dip top was just okay, it was too thin! Usually they dunk it and it gets super crispy. The ice cream is amazing, and so is the staff. The staff is not only friendly, but they are able to serve their products at a fast rate. The ice cream was super creamy and rich. However, I wish that paying for the product was a little easier because they only accept cash, and it's a little too pricy as well. The toppings also tasted a little too dry. Have you never heard of Putz's? That's because they don't advertise. How is it then that there is always a line at the order window? Because it's amazing. Putz's fills that nostalgic "remember when we use to go to the drive'in and get ice cream" void for Cincinnati. It's a little bit out of the way, but well worth it. Plus, it wouldn't be a drive-in if you could walk there, right? This week's special was a 12 inch coney and a milk shake for $6.60. I'm not a coney person, but it's a fair price and I can appreciate that the hot dog seemed pretty decent. Really though, we normally go to this place after we've already eaten. I think the reason I'm writing about the creamy whip in October is because I miss it dearly. Its so close to my art studio, and when driving home, I always pass it with 'what ifs' dancing in my head... a chocolate soda today? maybe a chocolate dip top? yes, you guessed it. I'm a big chocolate fan. Putz's is one of my favorite creamy whip's in town. There isn't one thing on the menu that isn't good and its so affordable! Even their slushies have flavor instead of just being sugar water. They are known for having these huge old creamy whip machines from the 1920's that churn the whip a bit differently, allowing more air, but I'm more contemporary and like the newer machines because they make the frozen concoction smoother. If you're on a budget but want to treat yo' self, whether it be with a foot long hot dog ( for some reason these taste amazing here even though they aren't grilled and their buns are always moist and fresh), or a chocolate malt you can't go wrong. The owners are really friendly and will remember you and your name, even though 3 seasons will pass before they see you again. I also like the Americana feel and the fact that in the 70's they wrote to the government and got the highway builders to move their on ramp going north, so that they could keep their location. I would say my only complaints is that its cash only, but if you can find some spare change in your car, you can still afford a hot dog or a sprinkle cone! And for the record, "Putz" is a family name, they also had the street named after them and its not pronounced with a long u as in "Putt Putt". read more
