My first restaurant week stop and I was SO excited to try Range. I'm not sure if it was an off day or what but the food was inconsistent and overall I felt like I paid far too much for what I received. I started with the deviled eggs they were good. My mushroom bisque was room temp I had to send it back to be heated. My favorite part of my meal was the rustic bolognese, really glad I chose this. My girlfriends got the salmon and the meatloaf. Meatloaf was so underwhelming and didn't come with the parm cream sauce when asked the server said it was on them but It clearly wasn't so that was annoying. She asked for some to go and when we tried it it had great flavor. The cream would have elevated the dish if it was added to the potatoes. The salmon was for sure the worst dish. The first salmon came out and it was so overdone it was not edible. My friend asked to have it remade (we usually NEVER complain or send anything back) and the second was much better. Wow! This is our new favorite. We had the caprese salad to start, the roasted chicken and filet entrees. The star of the meal was the Brussels sprouts. Then the crème brûlée cheese cake to finish off. With a few drinks, we walked out with no regrets over price or meal selection. Amanda was a great hostess for our meal. read more

Unfortunately, I had a bad experience the second time I visited this restaurant. I ordered a salad with chicken on it and the chicken was pink inside. I asked for them to take it back and replace with cooked chicken. They brought the salad back out it was clear they cooked the chicken, but did not replace the salad therefore it would be contaminated from raw chicken. When I spoke to the manager he said he would check it out and then never returned to replace my salad or offer any assistance or apology. I ended up not having a salad as a result. Poor customer service. Restaurant is located inside the Embassy Suites Riverwalk. After 12 hours of driving in San Antonio checked into the hotel at 9 Pm. Greeter asked for reservations, which we of course did not have. Basically sent us across the street to another eatery. You'd think that if it is the only option within a motel they'd accommodate $400 a night guests. There were several empty tables. I am not sure where to begin, other than I would not recommend this restaurant. SERVICE - Simply put amateurish, wait staff dropped their trays on three different occasions during our meal. When food arrived from the kitchen staff wandered around the tables trying to determine where it belonged. Once at the table, they had to ask who each meal belonged to. Waiter was not attentive, did not check on our meal until after 10 minutes. FOOD: Every course was bad. The salad had an excessive amount of cracked pepper. The overpowering pepper made it inedible. Stopped in for Happy Hour before company holiday party. We were served oysters that were spoiled. Immediately ran to the bathroom to get rid of the rancid oyster. Came back and asked the bartender to speak to somebody. She was apologetic but said, "the chef/owner Jason is upstairs but, I am afraid of him." After multiple different employees tried to get him down, he sent a manager down that came about 20 minutes after I had already thrown up. My wife and I went for restaurant week with another couple. While the food was very tasty, the service was incredibly frustrating. For those who don't know how SA restaurant week works, there is a prefix 3 or 4 course menu with a few items to choose from in each course. When we attempted to place our order for the appetizers, our waiter insisted that we needed to make our selections for each course upfront. This left us feeling pressured to make quick decisions about the courses we hadn't yet spent any time considering. It soon became quite clear why they wanted us to make all of our selections... let's just say Joey Chestnut would've been hard pressed to finish each course in time for the next one. The salads came while we still had appetizers on the table, and we rolled with it. But then our entrees came while each member of the party was no more than halfway through their salad. When we said we weren't ready and to please bring the entrees once we were ready for them, the waiter simply replied that they would then become cold. We kindly asked that they send them back and make new ones when the timing was right. They left with our food only to come back out just a few minutes later and try to serve it again. We could watch Jason Dady and his brother in the kitchen preparing the food. "Wheezy" the maitre d entertained us with stories about his 17 years with Dady. Our sides were cheesy cauliflower, roasted Brussels sprouts and orzo with black pepper galore. Every bite of everything was delish. Dady does casual(ish) steakhouse and I'm a fan. I love the vibe and we loved most of our food (some we only liked). My dining companion was not a fan of the 'Ranch Water' cocktail she ordered (so I 'choked it down' for her, like the champ I am). The quail was amazing at first bite and salty as we kept going. If I were grading on steak alone, I'd go spend a few more $$s at Bohanan's. Am I in the twilight zone? How has this amazing restaurant been open for two weeks and not one Yelp review?! I'm doing it! Chef Dady well known to our community has really gone above and beyond with Range. It will be hard for a lot of us regulars to the downtown area to not compare this space to the previous one (or even his other restaurants!) and I won't pretend I haven't done it. The lay out is different but you'll see some previous decor like the tile, armoires, oyster bar, bar stools (ayi-why?!) and of coarse the beautiful fans. I'm sure there's more, but I felt it a thoughtful gesture! All of the new stuff, the deep blues and handsome leather is where Range brings a new charm. The seating is much more welcoming. I love the sectioned off areas for lounging and sipping the wonderful beverages offered. They have extended the bar area a bit to happy hour hopefuls that aren't AT the bar, but definitely in the same region. These tables are sure to be a favorite as they aren't the wicker chairs and much easier for the hips. It truly is a gorgeous restaurant all the ways you look at it. The food is ahhhhmazing. I can't really express the love I have for this food and suggest you just look at my pictures because I'll sound like a fool trying to describe it all in a review. It won't stop me from trying though! Like most of us are with politics, there may be a division on the 45 day aged steak with its buttery -dare I say- rancid meaty goodness. Some would say it's too aged, I thought it was delicious and soft inside with a nice layer of char outside. It had a flavor of meaty buttery blue cheese. That's what my taste buds said. Share it. Talk about it. It's fun. The Other steak comes with some kind of hollandaise sauce and it was dreamy. I hear a really good steak shouldn't need a sauce and neither of these steaks did. It was just something else to tingle your taste buds. The service was amazing. Our first night was their first Friday being open and we had a party of six, including a kid. We had two waiters who were so careful and watchful it was almost creepy (in the good way). People don't realize what it's like to be in a really nice restaurant and be treated so well! Our second visit we sat in the bar area on a Sunday and Gabriel was also attentive and super helpful with everything we ordered. I've gone back twice now, which isn't something I do with a lot of restaurants often. The desserts, specifically the Bourbon Banana Pudding is what pulled me back again Sunday. There is something about the fired marshmallows and banana pudding that takes me to a place I want to be for hours. So that's what we did and what we'll probably do regularly. It's THAT great. A 2 part review: My wife and Kids stopped in for an appetizer and some drinks. The server was great! She offered us blueberry muffins that weren't on the menu. They were one of the best things we ate there. The fries and Brussel sprouts were good as well. We were staying at the Embassy suites and decide to go back to the Range for dinner because it was rainy and cold outside. The food experience was not so good this time around. Fries (still good). Octopus app was good, but the beans served with it were undercooked and way too many. My pork chop was fatty and should've been trimmed up more. The jalapeño grits were flaming hot and delicious. My daughter ordered the spaghetti with bolognese sauce. It was more like meat with a little spaghetti. (Maybe that's a Texas thing) The "smoked" short rib was heavily peppered and too much for my 14 year daughter. (No smoke flavor). Only because you must provide a minimum star rating... I made a reservation for Range outside dining through OpenTable for 6. (I love the ease and flexibility of the OpenTable booking app. There is a technical oversight in the app such that a restaurant can cancel your reservation so that the customer is not able to leave a review.) We walked in Range and my daughter was immediately stopped by a Manager and asked why we were there. (Had she had the opportunity to convey that to me, it would have ended there!) I checked in with the hostess and she stated that she did not suggest outside dining at their restaurant because it gets REALLY DARK out and we wouldn't like it. I looked around and asked if they had seating inside. We were seated at a table in the corner. We sat...and sat...and sat. Finally after no one visited our table to greet us, I looked around and advised my party I would be leaving because if the lack of professionalism. I stand up then water boy comes over. I advise don't bother to pour. We are leaving. He says ok. I allowed my party to walkout ahead of me so I can watch them. As we are exiting not questions asked by staff of management...they were relieved to see us go. I stepped to another waitress and advised why we left and suggested that they make it clear on advertisement and apps that they do NOT care to service diverse individuals. And just so you'll know that I had every intention of enjoying a good meal...no bars held.. we had a fantastic evening in a nearby professional establishment. Great steakhouse in town with friendly and fun crew. Sit by the bar and be entertained by the bartenders. They have huge TVs to watch the game too. The food is great as well and I left feeling happy and content. I had the 10oz sirloin coulette with the Asparagus for dinner. They came up right (medium rare) and I finished the entire meal when I thought I wasn't hungry. First of all.... all the previous bad reviews are probably from people who have never actually worked in customer service. This was an INCREDIBLE meal, and hands down one of the best steaks I've ever had. Not to mention first time trying beef tartare, "TEXAS STYLE". We'd heard alot about Jason Dady's new restaurant and were excited to try it for restaurant week. Unfortunately it didn't leave us with a lasting impression that we'll be anxious to return soon. The service was good, the ambiance was nice, but the food was just mediocre. We tried a nice variety of items and nothing really left us feeling like we couldn't wait to return. I started off with the Wild Mushroom Bisque and it was not warm enough for my tastes. The flavor was okay. Next I had the 44 Farms Sirloin Coulotte; which was a $12 supplement. The steak was cooked well but it simply didn't have much flavor at all. We had ordered the extra au poivre sauce to go with it and even that didn't have as much flavor as I'd hoped for...it was a little runnier than I'm used to and it was lacking that zing of flavor that would have put this dish over the top. My wife had the pan roasted king salmon and it was good but quite small for a main course and didn't have any sauce or anything with it. For sides we had the crispy brussel sprouts with blood orange gastrique that was very good and the marbled potatoes with bacon cream that was nothing special. We complimented our order with an old fashioned and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. For dessert we had the Mississippi mud pie and bourbon banana pudding. They both had great visual appeal. the brownie with the mud pie was quite hard but the rest of the dessert was tasty. My wife thought the banana pudding was pretty good but I wasn't a fan of it. I believe they're under new management so they are lost. Our drinks took over 25 minutes. Appetizers never arrived. Was surprised since we were guests at the attached Embassy Suites. The food is great had the multiple appetizers arancini, carpaccio, shrimp toscana, and The Caesar Salad made table side the dressing could have been mixed a bit better, but over all the food was delicious. The main issue with Range is the poor excuse of service, management, and kitchen to table time. The waiter was not trained properly (not their fault they seemed new), more than half of the menu had ran out (this was middle of the week 7pm), and the food took forever to get to the table took an hour to get a single appetizer. Having eaten at other Jason Dady restaurants I wasn't certain what to expect from a chef who currently owns southern Italian, seafood, and barbeque restaurants, but was now trying his hand at a steakhouse. In typical Dady fashion, Range does not disappoint. Located in the Embassy Suites Hotel on the corner of Houston St. and Soledad in downtown San Antonio, Range overlooks the Riverwalk, and is near the theatre district (Majestic, Empire, etc.). Both the upstairs and downstairs are open areas, with an elaborate bar on the first floor and an open kitchen in the center of the second floor. The décor is slightly upscale without being fussy, and the staff uniforms are meant to mirror traditional butcher's garb with heavy, full length, leather and cloth aprons. One of the few dings I can give this otherwise lovely restaurant is Dady decided to keep the previous tenant's dining chairs, and unfortunately that means you are sitting on not too comfortable French bistro style wooden chairs. As the dining experience is meant to be coursed out and rather long (we were there well over two hours), the chairs can put a bit of a crimp in your backside. Ask for one of their banquette tables to avoid this. Regarding the food... Range masters a precise, and nicely appointed menu that emphasizes traditional Texas steakhouse fare. It might seem odd that a steakhouse is only offering five cuts of beef, but do not panic... the options provide a perfect sampling of classic cuts, and you will not be disappointed. I ordered the 10oz. tender loan filet, one of my dining companions ordered the 18oz. ribeye, and the other ordered the bacon encrusted pork chop (that's as amazingly good as you think). I'm extremely particular about how my steak is cooked, as I imagine most carnivores are, and I am happy to report that Range nailed it on the first try. My filet arrived black and blue (slight char and cold in the middle), and on a cold plate. The plate is not Range's usual practice, but they were more than happy to accommodate me. My dining companions' ribeye and pork chop were spot on, and an otherwise chatty table fell silent as we thoroughly enjoyed meals. Please don't forget to leave room for the family style sides. We tried, and loved, the marble potato confit with bacon cream (bite size potatoes in bacon gravy), and the crispy fried brussels sprouts. In fact, looking at the sides' menu, you could easily make a meal from it and have no regrets. Some fun facts about Range... do try the table side martinis. I am not usually a fan of a server having to play cook or bartender at the table, but Range has trained their folks well, and not over complicated the presentation. As you know if you patronize any of Mr. Dady's other establishments, he has a thing for Nutella. The hazelnut and chocolate spread makes an appearance on Range's desert menu as well. Lastly, since at this price range, the dining experience is about so much more than the food alone, I recommend when making your reservation that you ask for David. He was an informed, bright, and enthusiastic server without being overbearing or interrupting the table too often. He will definitely help take your dining experience to the next level. Trying to find the waiter was impossible. I ended up getting up twice to ask another employee where my waiter was. We came here with a large group and we were all very pleased with the excellent service, fine staff and views of the Riverwalk. I think the group sampled about half the menu and everyone enjoyed the food. Steaks were perfectly cooked and the selection of meat vendor is clearly a priority. The potatoes served in bowls were a hit (and very tasty) as were the meatballs and the deviled eggs. This is an experience for a group that won't be forgotten. The restaurant is large so if you want to sit away from the main area, they can accommodate you. We waited and waited for the waitress to return and when she didn't I just took the glass to the bar and they replaced right away. We ordered the charcuterie which was excellent. This was the kick off to Culinary week for us. We enjoyed the previous restaurant at this location and the setting is similar with some updates. Love the updated pics...gives it more of that "range" look and farm to market feel. I had been quite eager to try this new restaurant with all the hype and I left thinking it was just okay. Considering we went on restaurant week and our bill with tip was close to $200, I expected it to be more of a lasting impression making me want to eagerly return. So we definitely tried more than just the basic offerings as we wanted to explore the "full experience". We started off with wine for myself and an Old Fashioned for my husband, next I had the chopped salad and my husband had the Mushroom Bisque. Then our main courses were salmon and potatoes with bacon cream sauce for me and the steak coulotte and brussel sprouts for him. We added on the au poivre sauce. The salmon was quite small, per the pictures I posted and there was no sauce or anything. It did have a nice pan sear to it that provided a fair amount of taste but a sauce would have put it over the top. Lastly we had the banana pudding and mud pie. The brownies on the mud pie were so hard you could hardly put a spoon or fork through them but the rest of the mud pie was quite good. Overall, it was just okay and not as memorable as I'd hoped for. Given the wide range of competition, I'll be curious to see how they do long term if they don't step up their game a little more. read more

Jason Dady, I love your restaurant. I've been over a handful of times and every time those blueberry muffins hit my mouth, it's the first time all over again. This last time last weekend was phenomenal. My husband and I shared the NY strip, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower gouda heaven. Our meal was so good- we had to test our luck and get dessert- the deconstructed Mississippi Mud Pie. Then our bartender brought us our cotton candy! Throw in the phenomenal service and we have such a great meal to talk about a week later. Outstanding! I would recommend you just recreate our meal and savor every bite. We wanted to take our whole family out for a nice dinner while celebrating one of our sons' accomplishments in San Antonio. Yelp had good things to say about Range, so I booked a table and we went. Granted, Valentines weekend is a busy one for dining out. Everyone from the hostesses, kitchen staff, and our waitress were kind, welcoming, and apologetic about our food. It was extremely slow in coming out (three different staff members came to apologize). When it did come, the Brussels sprouts were overcooked, and the medium steaks (a strip & a tenderloin) were both rare. They took both back to cook them longer, and came back better. They comped our desserts and an Irish coffee. With all of the other options in San Antonio, I don't know if we would try them again. Especially because we're only in town once or twice a year. For five adults eating a salad or bisque each, two had a glass of wine, five adult entrees, and two family style sides, it cost right at $350. Attended this evening for daughter's birthday. Dining room no where near full and plenty of staff around. Ordered appetizers and took about 30 minutes to come and when it did was informed one was sent to the wrong table so we had them come at separate times. They were good - calamari And antipasto plate. We waited another hour for our dinner plates. I got the pork chop plate and it was sooooo salty I could not eat more after two bites. See other reviews with same experience - unfortunately after we went. Pork chop was over done and couldn't cut easily with the butter knife provided. Potatoes and Brussels sprouts also super salty. Husband's $37 dollar salmon came raw in the middle. He sent it back and they returned it pushed back together and still raw In very center although they must have put in microwave or broiler to fix?? He sent it back and ended up not eating anything. Manager did come to table at end and I am not sure if there had been lots of complaints that night but I wouldn't say he was apologetic but more accusational of my husband. We were not charged for salmon but my husband didn't take the first bite so I wouldn't expect to be. Will not return for the price, taste, and service. read more
