came with a couple friends for restaurant week and was nervous after reading the reviews of other people. however, maybe because of the time we went 530PM, we didn't have to wait long for food, nor was the food cold when served. parking is a bit difficult san antonio downtown. for convenience, i opted for valet parking with embassy suites. the restaurant is located inside the hotel so the main entrance is located on the hotel side (not street side). valet is typically $19 and is still $9 with validation from range. appetizers were the best part of the meal - queso: solid - deviled eggs: enjoyed the smoked salmon on top, my favorite appetizer of what we ordered - hushpuppies: surprisingly pleasant, good crunch and flavor soup: mushroom bisque: the waitress had emphasized that this item would be VERY salty which was a bit concerning, i appreciated the heads up and can confirm that it is indeed on the salty side. has good flavor, wasn't able to finish it due to the salt content - wagyu meatloaf: solid portion size but wagyu unable to be distinguished, mashed potatoes were delicious though! - salmon: crust was a bit on the salty side too, wish there was more of the sweet potato purée vs just as more of a decorative element. fish was a bit over cooked. - mississippi mud pie: very chocolate heavy, i didn't particularly enjoy it. all in all, was happy to have tried more items from the restaurant week set menu but wasn't too impressed with our experience. read more

This restaurant was our launching pad for the Elton John Farewell concert! We were a group of women used to great food and service-The Range lived up to all our expectations! Our waitress was incredibly nice and effective/no mistakes made while super gracious! Great red wine -Paso Robles Cab and also tried margarita. Brussels were huge order- enough for 5 ladies/but I wanted to eat them all. Hard boiled eggs wow! I had steak tartare as my entree-First time and I was pleased-wagyu beef and all good! I was expecting great service ended up having a terrible experience. From the beginning, I had to wave down someone to take our order with only four tables being in use including ours. We ordered a Cesar Salad for two that should have been made at our table and we never received it. We ordered shrimp appetizers and asked for them as a meal and also ordered a pizza that we asked to come out at the same time--again did not happen. I ordered the pork chop and it came out raw. I sent it back and got it back almost 30 minutes later, after I had already asked for it to be packaged to go. For all of the mistakes they made I received a free dessert! Horrible experience for a Valentine outing. Very disappointed with the atmosphere. If you're going to charge $100 per person plus 20% gratuity, please make an effort to make it feel somewhat romantic. From the start no waitress for a while. Then since it was a pretty set menu, we were rushed to choose from the limited choices on a fixed menu. Yes, that is expected but when you put a filet mignon as one of the selections, don't charge an extra $20 for a choice that has already been chosen. The other two choices were fish or chicken.DO BETTER!! The entree was delicious. The desserts not so much. They were old dry and should've been thrown out. The waitress, who according to the restaurant deserves a 20% gratuity, after taking the order was no where to be found. The food was brought out and left on the table by others other than the assigned waitress. No one asked if there was anything else that was needed. No salt and pepper available on the table. I went to ask for those items and still no one brought it out. If it wasn't for a young lady who was contracted to help with the non over crowded restaurant, the dinner would have sucked even more. Asked for to go containers, the waitress brought them to the table set them on the table and left. The contracted help on her own accord, asked if she could package our food for us. There isn't a huge selection on their menu but I'm guessing it's because they specialize in seafood and steaks. My mother and I each picked the miso cod and ordered a side dish of their roasted brussel sprouts. I wasn't much of a fan of the miso cod. I guess I was expecting something with a little bit of sweetness but the fish was on the saltier side. I did appreciate the freshness of the fish but for the portion, the price wasn't right. I enjoyed the sprouts which had a nice balance of sweet and savory! I also tried their mushroom bisque which was pretty tasty and full of flavor. They brought out a bowl with just seasoning and poured the bisque soup from a pot which was a nice experience. They also served us some of their muffins (on the house) which were delicious, warm and soft! Before we got the check they gave us some cotton candy which was an interesting sweet touch. read more

We were staying at the Embassy Suites and really didn't want to eat at the hotel restaurant but didn't want to go out and wanted a special dinner too. Range had everything. The Chef is magnificent and the service was excellent. We shared a tomahawk steak and it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The sides and dessert were wonderful too. I am active duty Army and was promoted this past Monday. To celebrate my promotion my best friend who flew in from North Carolina, my fiancée and I, decided to go out for a fancy steak dinner. We decided we would spare no cost and ordered two ribeyes medium rare and the gnocchi. The food came out in a timely fashion but almost immediately I noticed my ribeye was quite firm, I cut into it and it didn't even have a shade of pink left. It wasn't even medium. I told the waiter who was visibly shocked and immediately apologized once he saw my steak even said "oh yeah, that's not even remotely medium". He repeatedly apologized and said he'd bring two new steaks out immediately (my friend's steak was medium). Thinking the issue was resolved and not really upset, as mistakes happen. We waited. Our waiter actually picked up our sides as they were getting cold and said he'd bring new ones out, with the new steaks which I appreciated. Then, the manager comes back with our original steaks telling me that the chef is confused as "this is our medium rare" I asked him to look at it. He got uncomfortable and just asked if we did in fact want them more rare. To which I replied "yes medium rare please". He took them back again, my fiancé had already finished her entree at this point. Which she enjoyed very much. The new steaks came out and, presumably out of pettiness, they were blue. Cool on the inside and barely charred on the outside. We told them just to leave them as at this point I was very frustrated and would rather have an under cooked $56 dollar steak than over cooked. The waiter came back and repeatedly apologized for the manager bringing us our original steaks back basically admitting to the managers inexperience and unprofessionalism. But he never brought us new sides. I ate half of my steak before I lost my appetite, asked the waiter for a to go box and mentioned the missing potatoes. He apologized and brought two fresh orders to go. My fiancée's drink also remained empty for almost the entire dinner, the waiter asked my friend and I repeatedly if we would like another beer but failed to see hers was empty. The manager kept starting at our table after we originally sent the steaks back making my fiancée eventually uncomfortable so we did not order desserts. The tab was over $186 for food quality and service that would've been overshadowed by any Texas Roadhouse. An absolute waste of money. And a terrible ending to a very important day in our lives. Curiosity brought us downtown to try the new Dady restaurant, a steakhouse, in the space that used to be Lüke. Saturday lunch hour was quiet, and we snagged a table with a view of the Riverwalk. The tomato-feta salad had eye appeal and fresh flavor. The burger had steakhouse credibility, reminding us of favorites at Ruth's Chris and Zinc. A breaded red snapper was crunchy and savory. The grilled asparagus was well balanced between char and crispness. For bread, we received blueberry muffins with red pepper butter. Our check came with a fun poof of blue cotton candy. We look forward to coming back at dinner with an appetite for the hearty steaks. We decided to try Range to celebrate my husband's birthday with the family. It was also on the last day of restaurant week. We figured that we lucked out. Unfortunately, all of the dinner times were unable to accommodate our group of 8 (6 adults, one child and one baby). So, we opted for 2:45 after contacting the restaurant to see if we can choose between the lunch or dinner menu. I wanted to be sure our birthday boy got HIS choice. We got the thumbs up so we're super excited. We arrived a few minutes early to ensure parking wasn't an issue. There was valet parking but also a convenient public parking lot just across the street. $15 for 2 hours or $20 for 8 hrs. Unfortunately, our daughter's family used a different self paying box for the same lot and was charged $20 for 2 hours and $25 for 8 hrs. Very weird!! I thought for sure 2 hrs would be plenty of time so didn't opt for the 8 hrs. To our surprised, the place was fairly empty. Only 2 parties dining. Despite that and the fact that we had reservations, it took a few minutes to seat us. This should have been a clue that service may be on the slow side. We were each provided a copy of their regular menu as well as the Lunch Restaurant Week menu. Upon request, we were also given a copy of the Dinner Restaurant Week menu. Ultimately, 2 people ordered off the Dinner Restaurant Week Menu, 4 people ordered from the Lunch Restaurant Week Menu and one from the children's menu. We ordered, a bottle of wine, one iced tea and 2 sodas. It took a really long time to get our drinks and additional time for our appetizers. The wine came even later. It was apparent that servers were busy prepping for the dinner crowd and we chose a bad time to come. However, my husband's and daughters Beef Tartar was absolutely delicious! If they had served it with a better cracker (instead of saltine), it would have elevated it to an even higher level of experience. The Wild Mushroom soup bowls was brought out with a bit of butter and something else in one area and then the hot soup was poured into the bowl at the table. Cool presentation but unfortunately, the flavor didn't quite wow me. It was flavorful but just okay for me. After a fairly long interval our entrees arrived. To their credit our grandson's meal came out first. He had a cheeseburger with fries. It really looked great and our grandson loved it. In fact, when the meals came out, his dad's cheeseburger off of the Lunch Restaurant Week Menu looked about the same size and identical in every way except for the slice of lettuce and tomato. My salmon with asparagus was cooked well and the asparagus good. The steaks, however, were cooked correctly for everyone except for my husband. That was unfortunate since we were celebrating his birthday. He ordered medium rare but it comes out medium well and cold. It had to be re-made. By the time his steak came out, everyone else was done eating. There was a fairly long interval before desserts came out. The two ordering from the Dinner Restaurant Week had options for Lavender infused Creme Brûlée. The rest of us had an option to add Mississippi Mud Pie for an extra $5. The children's menu included an ice cream sundae. The desserts were all delicious but our grandson received his dessert LAST which is quite unusual in my experience of eating out. Children tends to have less patience so they are often given their dessert first. When asked, we were told they didn't want it t omelt. Then when it came, it was absolutely disappointing. Instead of an ice cream sundae, he had a couple small scoops of plain vanilla ice cream. No topping, no whipped cream, nada! The waitress said they "ran out". It occurred to us that with a full bar, they could have at least added a maraschino cherry or a piece of fruit that they dressed drinks with. It took another long interval for us to receive our bill. When it came, we were charged for 4 dinners and 2 lunches instead of 2 dinners ($35 each) and 4 lunches ($15 each) plus for 3 Lavender Creme Brûlée's (2 came with the 2 Dinner meals) instead of one. When I pointed it out I was told that it was cheaper for us that way. Clearly that was not the case since there was an$5 up charged for the Mississippi Mud Pie and the Lavender Creme Brûlée's is $10. $15 plus $10 is only $25, not $35 for the dinner meal. It took a couple of renditions to get everything straight. They also compensated my husband's entire meal. We ended up exceeding our 2 hours dining experience, but at the end we all agreed the quality of food and their apologetic attitude and willingness to fix the check produced a 3 1/2 star up to a 4 stars. Fair warning to all. If you don't want a European style of stretched out dining, don't go when it's between the typical lunch and dinner times. read more

Let's start off by saying the food and service was 5 stars. We each had the $50 ribeye. From Creekstone Farms out of Kansas. Easily one if the top 3 best ribeye steaks in San Antonio. Ribeye is my go to steak. I ordered my ribeye medium rare and charred on the outside - Pittsburgh style. Many steakhouses, even really good ones can miss on this request. The Range did not. It came out perfect. It was more on the rare side but very very good. Again one of the top 3 ribeyes in SA. The service was great. Suzanna was our waitress. They offer table side prep for many items - salads, martinis etc. the side we chose was a smoked Gouda cauliflower and it was fantastic. When they bring your check they bring you a mountain of cotton candy - which is like none you've ever experienced. the ambience was our biggest disappointment - it was nice but nothing compared to Bohanans, Bobs, Morton's, Kirby's. For a top tier restaurant the ambience doesn't match the quality of food or service. read more

Let me start by saying that Christa was a fabulous bartender. I would give her five stars. However, I came in last night, sat at the bar to eat dinner. It took over 2 hours for my ribeye to come out of the kitchen. Christa kept the drinks coming, which helped the time go by. The manager did come over and chat with me and apologize, which was much appreciated. By the time it got to me, I wasn't really hungry anymore and pretty much got my check and left. Not sure if it was the alcohol or the food, but as soon as I got back to my hotel, I threw up every 30 minutes all night. Then I had to get up and fly home this morning on a weak and empty stomach. My wife and I took a chance last night at Range before heading to the Majestic to see Clue. Normally, we make reservations at Bohanaans and are never disappointed, even with $300+ price tag. So... Range: The atmosphere was quiet and open (somewhat inviting). We made reservations and arrived a few minutes late, but it wasn't a problem. We were promptly seated, and the waiter was quickly at our table. We started with deviled eggs, and the hand pulled mozzerella. The deviled eggs (with truffle oil) put a new spin on a familiar favorite. I personally loved the eggs, but my wife thought the oil made them too rich. The hand pulled mozzerella, though... seriously, seriously, amazing. Scott (our waiter) did not pressure us, did not rush us, and was friendly, cordial, professional, and kept us informed of the status of our entrees through the dinner. Then we move to the entrees... My wife chose the gnocchi whis she described as incredibly flavorful, with a great temperature, and back bacon and cream sauce put it over the top. I went straight for the pork chop (garl8c and bacon make everything better, right?!).The answer is yes, yes, it does! A thick cut pork chop, perfectly cooked, great sear, accompanied with perfectly seasoned potatoes, and fried Brussel sprouts. I can not tell you how pleased we both were with our choice to go to Range. Now for the cons: The price. We are accustomed to paying for high-quality dinner experiences. Again, we frequently visit Bohanans, Perry's, Signature, and establishments of this caliber. I would honestly put Range in the company of these restaurants, but I was honestly disappointed when the bill came. I was shocked at $106, when I was expecting at least $250+. To the management: Know the value of your food!! I would easily pay 3x the price for this quality of food. But seriously, great job, and we will be back frequently!! read more

Wow what a fancy restaurant! The interior is beautiful and the menus alone are leather bound journals of knowledge. I've heard great things about Range and wanted to love it but this experience was just okay. Our group started with the Texas beef tartare parisa and the Aspen frites as appetizers. The frites were bomb - totally five stars and I would come again for them. I wasn't a fan of the parisa but it was certainly fresh and others really liked it. We received blueberry corn muffins with peppercorn butter next and they were good. For the main entree I tried the bolognese. I was a little disappointed. It was obvious that it was cooked earlier and reheated. At the end of our meal our server surprised us with a huge tower of blueberry cotton candy for dessert. A nice touch. I would like to come back for lunch since I heard their burger was amazing and the frites were my favorite. read more

I have to say ribeye in garlic butter was, if not perfectly, at least competently cooked (to requested medium rare) and tasty, so I guess I was on the fence to give it the slight bump to a functional 3/positive skewing rating on the strength of that. I was not paying however, and if I was I would have likely been as irritated as those who did were by the pastas and cream spinach, all of which come out cold to the table, long after the time we ordered them, and all of which tasted bad to boot. A cheesy potato soup tasted of salt and not much else. On top of that the service was way too haphazard and amateurish considering the price-point and the setting in the Embassy Suites hotel only further served to enhance the down-market vibe. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Restaurant hours clearly state 10pm. We are staying in the hotel and got in late and decided to get dinner. Walked in at 9pm, restaurant is empty. All the staff is hanging around the host stand chatting. I asked for a table, they said they were only taking reservations, I pointed out that all the tables were empty. Then I was told the kitchen was closed. I mentioned that the restaurant doesn't close for an hour. By this time the entire staff is exchanging looks to see who could come up with the next lame excuse for not wanting to serve me. It was apparent they didn't want to work the remainder of the night. Finally someone chimed in with "we're out of food" I can't vouch for the actual food or presentation, but if the quality of food is any reflection of the quality of staff they've hired, I would recommend skipping this joint and heading across the street to the nice Royal Blue Grocers for some quality service and excellent take out. read more

Restaurant Week Lunch Review: Jason Dady's newest creation has been on my to-try list since it opened so I figured there was no better time than San Antonio's Restaurant Week to give it a try. I arrived at 12:25 with my party of 6 for our 12:30 reservation and was told upon check-in that it would take 10-15 minutes to get our table ready. (ok but isn't that part of the of point of making a reservation?) It took slightly under 10 minutes before we seated. I love the interior of the restaurant, located downtown in the Embassy hotel, and how the large windows throughout the far side of the space really allowed the natural light to highlight the restaurant. Our waiter, Javier, was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We all opted for the RW prix fixe menu. I chose the Wild Mushroom Bisque as my starter, Beef Tenderloin Bolognese as my entree, and opted for the additional Mississippi Mud Pie $5 dessert addition. Our first course came out relatively quickly and I absolutely was IN LOVE with the mushroom bisque. I don't normally like mushrooms that much so I was a little skeptical but I figured it was probably more interesting than a standard salad (the other course 1 option) and I'm so glad I selected it. I would go back to Range JUST to order this bisque again, and if Jason Dady ever sold it in to-go containers you could sign me up to be the first to order it. It was so good, that one of my companions with a salad was envious after trying a bite of the bisque that she asked Javier if she could switch her salad for the bisque (which he did without charging her). After the stellar success of our first course we had to wait for over 30 minutes for our entrees to be brought out. Now, I don't know about you, but when your a downtown employee on your lunch break waiting 30 minutes for ONE course of your meal just doesn't quite work with the whole 1 hour lunch break deal. When our entrees finally arrived my bolognese looked delicious so I wanted to love it and I probably would have if it had any seasoning on it. As it was, it was slightly bland, and our whole table ended up running down a nearby waiter to get salt and pepper grinders for the table. After about another 20 minutes of not being checked on by Javier when we did finally spot him we were getting antsy on time and requested that our checks and dessert course be brought out simultaneously. When the dessert course arrived, I was slightly disappointed (1) by its size and (2) by the taste. The vanilla bean chantilly was superb and a great flavor accompaniment, however, the chocolate nib? (maybe it was brownie) was so hard I thought I was going to bend my spoon trying to break it into smaller pieces. After taking our credit cards to process it again took more than 10 minutes to return with them. At this point, it was now past 2 pm and the whole table was late for returning to work. I could understand the meal taking so long if the restaurant was packed, however, it was only half full when we arrived (and had to wait for our table to be prepped) and we were one of three tables when we finally left. As we were all standing and preparing to leave Javier did drop off a cute and billowy plate full of blue cotton candy-apparently this is what the restaurant offers in place of mints. It was a nice quirky touch but we were all literally just grabbing handfuls and taking them to go on our way out the door. I'm glad I got to try Range finally, but probably won't be returning soon unless it's to try their dinner menu and I have the luxury of taking an extended time to dine...or when the restaurant begins selling the mushroom bisque by the gallon. read more

This space has been numerous restaurants over the years I have been staying at the Embassy Suites. Range is by far my favorite. Don't be deterred by the Location being in a hotel. Range is by far not " hotel" food. My friend's steak was perfectly prepared and seasoned. It was also huge. My salmon over grilled asparagus was tender and delicious. This was the place my brother and bride to be chose for the wedding rehearsal dinner. I'm not sure if their menu is always so expensive but for New Year's Eve it was a fixed menu of $75 a person before 6pm and $125 a person after. We had about 18 people, if my memory is correct 3 tables of 6. I chose the "Perisha?" Salad which is like a chopped meat/veggie mixture served with crackers and some sort of mayo/cheese spread. It was delicious and I cleaned my plate. My mother ordered the mushroom creme' soup and I had the pleasure of having that as well. The main course I chose was the 10oz filet mignon cooked medium and what can I say? I've been to Fleming's , Ruth Chris in different states, and Eddie Merlot's in Indy. Hands down the best steak I've had in 2018. It was seasoned perfectly and I left no bite unfinished. I did have Duckhorn (cab)wine paired with the steak. Their mixed small potato side in the bacon butter-creme was the perfect side kick. I again stole some one else's side and tried the cauliflower (cheese?) casserole and I ate my shared portion. Let's not forget the dessert! Lastly I had the choice between the mud pie or the cheesecake and can you guess which one I tried? Yep, both. The mouse and chocolate cake or brownie was great! It is very rich so I do suggest sharing. I tried two forks full of the berries and cheese cake and it was the perfect mixture of the two.
