This is my go-to for a great bone marrow! I always make sure to order multiple dishes too and they were all so tasty! The seasonal risotto was my favorite, the cheese was so satisfying and the mushrooms in it were a great touch. Creamed corn was absolutely delicious. Was able to ask for a regular man n cheese no problem, loved the crust added on top! Still didn't beat the risotto in my opinion. Scallops were so tasty, with the flavorful gravy. Calamari was perfectly crisped! Mushrooms are superior for me so this side dish was perfect with a mixture of them. The inside of Rare is a much cozier experience at night for sure. I love the way its decorated along with the booth seating. Our waiter was great too, very attentive and made sure we were satisfied with everything! Came to this spot for a birthday dinner on a Saturday. The place wasn't that busy & they offer free valet parking on weekend which was nice. The food & service was good. The ambiance of the restaurant was a bit too white man centered but overall environment was nice. The in-house bread was very memorable in size, airiness, & taste. Not shown, oysters rockafeller & calamari were great starters. The steak was a special for the dinner & was a great split for 3 people. The pork chop was salty & risotto was dry. The mash potatoes were perfectly whipped & the brussel sprouts could have just been plain without the goat cheese. Our server Nia was so attentive and helpful the minute we arrived until we needed to leave for our dinner reservation. 5 stars for her. Remember to tip on the full price of the menu (not happy hour prices). The dining experience really fell short. Our tomahawk came out undercooked and the filet came out cold and without the truffle butter we ordered. We should have gone to our go-to steak house, Carnevor (been there 3 times and never disappoints). Saving grace, the manager brought back our reheated food and apologized. Added back a star. Honestly, for a wet aged Tomahawk it tasted dry. Maybe it was the reheating that dried it out. Our waitress didn't stop once to check in on us. To the manager's credit he did return after dropping off the food to make sure all was good. The ambiance is a little stuffy. Very typical of the old school steak houses. The drinks and apps are good. The soup could have been warmer. The steak was a disaster. Ordered the 32 oz bone in tomahawk, wanting to split for two as my wife had been here before and when presented with it in the past with work colleagues, she enjoyed it. This time it was inedible. Very raw, to the table. So we sent it back. I've never sent a steak back in my life. When it came back, it seemed as though it was put into a blast furnace. The meat nearly tasted deep fried, had 0 flavor and somehow they managed to make all the fat on it hard as a rock and crunchy, yet still leave it raw... on refire. Even the button onion served with it was raw. Usually these are soft and spread akin to a butter. Not this one. Brussel sprouts are basic, mushrooms are disappointing, beef fat fries are good. On my 2024 Tour of Steakhouses, this was at the top of the list. Where do I even begin? First I have to say we were well taken care of by the General Manager Devante and our server Alex. Both individuals made the experience a 10/10. The location is easy to find right off of Michigan, near the lake. There is a garage across the street with affordable parking by the hour but Ubering is a safer bet because the cocktail menu is amazing. We sat in one of their gorgeous booths in the back by their library. Although their dining room isn't enormous, there are plenty of seats and two private rooms. I think they utilize them as general seating when they aren't booked for parties, but again, plenty of room in the dining area. The bar was also large with a decent amount of seating. We started with martinis and calamari. The calamari comes with a spicy and a sweet dipping sauce. Per Alex's recommendation, we split the chopped salad. It's full of vegetables that compliment each other perfectly. They also bring enormous flaky popovers with a honey butter. You'll start with half because they're so big, but you'll finish the whole thing because addicting. For dinner I had the NY Strip and my friend had the Bottleneck. Both were cooked perfectly. We went with creamed corn (very strong smoky flavor), broccolini, and lobster mac. The lobster mac had a generous amount of lobster so I was very happy. For dinner we split their crème brûlée special, which was s'more flavored. Yum! We each also got some espresso because all of that eating had us exhausted. Alex and Devante stopped by the table periodically to chat. We had such a great time making small talk and learning about the establishment. After dinner we explore their library which is full of vintage books. It's hard to choose a highlight to our trip because everything was perfection. A little disappointed with Rare. Wait staff promptly approached the table and took our drink order and said they'd follow up with the "specials". Once our drinks arrived, our waiter reviewed the menu. We asked about the "specials" only to learn there were no specials. Disappointing! After placing our order, dinner delivery was slow; probably due to a large dinner party. When dinner was delivered, our filets were barely warm but cooked/seasoned perfectly. The side was a bit cool so we requested to have it reheated and they quickly accommodated. I liked this place a lot. I had been to the one in the Madison area before. I can't really remember much of it but this Milwaukee location was very good. The waitress went through the menu and recommend certain things. I had the 10 oz bottleneck as the waitress suggested from my same usual filet mignon. I have called the restaurant twice to speak with management and both times I was told that I would receive a call but no one has reached out. I was brought to Rare while visiting a friend in Lake Geneva. We got there a little early, so we went to the elaborate bar and were greeted by the bartender, Mia, who had a delightful smile and made me the best dirty martini in an icy, frosted glass. Her music she created was from my era which we all enjoyed. We then were escorted to a cozy booth with crisp linens and rich, dark wood. The server was lovely and made suggestions. We shared the best calamari as a starter. Then ordered filet mignons and some sides. The meal was excellent and the steak cooked to perfection. The loaded baked potato was a meal in itself. This was old school elegance that reminded me of an old restaurant in my hometown of Boston, MA. All in all, a very wonderful experience! You cannot eat ambiance, but it sure helps. read more

We ordered a glass of red wine and a glass of white wine for drink, one Oyster Rockefeller for appetizer, two 7 oz fillets for entree, one asparagus for side, and one espresso crème brûlée for dessert. The wine was great! Bread: So delicious!!! Crispy outside and chewy inside. I could eat a lot if this was a breakfast lol. Oyster Rockefeller: Flavors were good. The oysters were thin and small though. 7 oz fillet: I ordered my fillet medium plus (cook a bit longer than medium) and my girlfriend ordered a well-done one. It turned out that mine was overcooked and hers was undercooked so they were so similar... Flavors were good and sizes were big enough for us though. Asparagus were good. espresso crème brûlée: My girlfriend said it was okay. Don't get me wrong - it was delicious but there was just nothing really special. Went to Rare to enjoy the bar and try out their cocktails and happy hour menu. The food was excellent, and the woman behind the bar was super helpful and nice. The signature cocktails, however, left something to be desired. They're clearly using quality ingredients (Cocchi di Torino vermouth, for example), but the Manhattan variation (pecan-infused bourbon) was strangely tannic/astringent, and the old fashioned variation was a bland "Rock & Rye" thing. This place is truly upscale. Everyone enjoyed their food. Not a speck of food was left on the plates after dinner. I obviously ordered the steak because that's what Rare is known for. My steak was cooked to absolute perfection. The manager came by our table to see how we liked it and talked to us about their very expensive ovens and just how much expertise and TLC goes into their food. This place is very much worth the experience. I'm not entirely sure I could afford Rare outside of Downtown Dining week. But you can bet I'll be back. Service was amazing. Drinks were on point. Happy hour review. We sat at the bar. We started with the shrimp cocktail and it was great! I'm not sure if we somehow ordered just a half order or not cause it was half the price we expected on our bill but I'm assuming it was because there were only 5 pieces of shrimp. The shrimp was great quality and huge! The cocktail sauce was classic but a little spicy. We then had to ask for bread and butter which i wish they just brought to everyone but this may be because we were at the bar and not an actual table. The bread was soft and the butter was sweet - both delicious! We then got the steak frites. This has a mountain of well seasoned and crispy fries. The steak was tender and had a nice char on the outside. Lastly we got the pork belly sliders and this was also perfect! Came with fries and the actual sliders had a good amount of pork belly and a cherry jam that paired well with the sliders. The fries had a great dipping sauce that had a sweet aftertaste. Overall great and I'd definitely come back. Only reason I gave 4 stars is cause the steak had a good amount of fat in it. read more

The bartender was so kind and friendly and switch the tvs for us to watch the games we wanted. From there we sat down and hand a great experience. Our server was highly attentive and knowledgeable. went for dinner 11/24 for our anniversary knowing it was pricy, but ready to pay for a wonderful evening. started with raw oysters...I had 6 one of which was bad. my husband had 12, one of his was also bad. Dangerous to serve bad oysters. we also sat waiting while tables around us were served popovers. we had to request them. i had the bone in ribeye it was very good as was my husband's steak. however we were well into our steaks before our sides came. we had to ask about them. we also had the bone marrow and had to ask for a spoon to eat it and the crostini it should have come with. all this while waiting a long time between courses. I had coffee after dinner which was watery as was my espresso martini. WATERY. there's NO excuse for this. especially at these prices. I could add more but I seem to be running out of space. We decided to try Rare tonight based on some of the other reviews. The setting was nice, the steaks were below par, and the service made it even worse. The steaks were not flavorful and quite chewy for prime cut aged ribeyes. We were served without silverware for all three parts (soup, entree, dessert) of our meal. We waited several minutes staring at our food until our server finally came back to ask if we needed anything and had to ask for silverware each time. While we were still eating our dinner we were interrupted with the dessert menu and then rushed to order Overall, the experience was unpleasant. We will not be recommending Rare. For the same money and 100X better steaks and service go to Carnevor. read more

We came here for my 50th birthday celebration and were really looking forward to it after seeing all the great reviews. However, we were both very dissatisfied with the quality of the food. The only thing which was delicious was the pop-over rolls they start you out with. We decided to get the filet mignon and the bone in rib-eye. Additionally, as it was a special celebration we opted to order 3 ounces of Waygu beef (and at $40 per ounce was twice as expensive as you see in Chicago). While the Waygu was good, our little taste was well over cooked which was disappointing. My entree was supposed to include a side of béarnaise sauce which they forgot, and we'd also ordered loaded baked potato to share. It came plain. After pointing these things out the did return shortly with the potosi corrected and a side of my sauce, which tasted like it was a powdered mix. While the food was decent overall, I was very disappointed by the level of service we received. When we spend $500 total for dinner I expect the servers to make less mistakes. That said, save your money and go elsewhere. read more

First visit last night. Impressive wine list, as well as premium and hard to get steaks and seafood options available, in addition to their standard menu. My friends loved their wedge salad and chopped salad, as well as the mushroom bisque. I ordered the Lobster Bisque. It was good, but seemed like more of a tomato bisque. Onion rings were the best we've had in town! Dry-aged Ribeye and KC Strip were perfectly cooked to requested temp and full of flavor WITHOUT the jus, which we asked them to leave off the steak. I tried the jus on the side by dunking a piece of steak in it. It tasted like a beef soup broth. Good, but not necessary for the steak that had great flavor on its own. We also enjoyed the loaded hash browns, topped with cheese, sour cream, and lardons! We also liked the Bananas Foster prepared table-side, but we liked the carrot cake a bit more. I think it's among the best in town. Our server, Peter, was excellent! He was fun, yet professional, and didn't miss a beat. Definitely recommend, but hold the jus and trust the steak and the chef! Went to rare for the first time. The drinks to start we're excellent! My boyfriend preferred the Manhattan to the old fashion. I had a dirty martini. We started with the crusted bone marrow. This was quite good and was served with bread and honey. We also went for salads, the caesar had an anchovy paste, and I thought it was very good. The gem wedge salad also was quite excellent and I would definitely recommend. For our entrées, we went with the the American Wagyu KC strip, as well as the American Wagyu ribeye, and we also splurged and went for the Japanese Hokkaido snow Wagyu. It was somewhat expensive, but if you have the resources, it was definitely worth it!! This piece of steak alone was the best I've ever had! Lastly, although we were stuffed, we felt we had to try the bananas foster. I would highly recommend this dessert, it is served table side, and was exceptionally good service was fantastic Our server did a wonderful job with being personable as well as prompt with our food, his timing was excellent. Old school environment with lots of wood all around. The booth was classic old school but the service and presentation was appropriate. The building is a daytime business building with the ground floor and lobby for the restaurant. Prices for steaks and wine not out of the ordinary. Overall I would say good place with excellent food and appropriate ambiance. Why not 5 stars? Because this is expected from a high end steak place great food and service. The service was good but not Extraordinary. Nothing against the staff. Prices are fair. Walked out with $300 bill for 3. I have never had an exceptional experience at Rare. I have been here for both dinner and corporate lunch events. The food is so salty I can barely eat it, the food never comes cooked how I ask it to be, and the sides are bland and boring. The service is also quite lacking in that they were in attentive and did not seem to put any appreciation into detail or going the extra inch for customers. The location also is not very ideal, it is not around much of anything downtown other than the museum district. It would not be convenient if you are planning on going to a show or event after dinner. read more

My first time going here was Sunday July 24th and I must admit it's in a great location and you don't have to valet there's street parking across. We didn't have a reservation but called and was told it was fine, we asked about attire and they had no restriction on that either. Jorge was our server and he was awesome and very polite and attentive, I martini glasses are a little small but very delicious that's about it. The bathrooms are nice and clean. The food was great the presentation was great happy we found a steak place in town which is making this harder now to decide which one to have dinner. It's a little on the pricey side but their steak is fantastic. And I like that the windows face the street so it's not completely dark. Everything came in a timely manner and he replaced our silverware after every course! Fancy. I got the bone in NY strip medium rare and it was cooked just right. The ceaser salad we ordered was just alright but it's a steak place so it makes sense. The beet goat cheese salad was apparently really good! An excellent Downtown Dining experience, which means I'm coming back. Downtown Dining is this brilliant Milwaukee concept where participating restaurants offer discounted (sometimes heavily discounted) prix fixe menus, but execution varies heavily. In general you're better off going for the most expensive restaurants as they have the biggest discounts and tend to be more aware that they have an opportunity to find repeat customers. I've been disappointed by other restaurants where the waitstaff is overwhelmed by the traffic and service is surly. Not the case here. Although very busy, service was impeccable, efficient, polite, accurate, personable and friendly. Most important for me, competent. The hostess was ready with our reservation, seated us immediately, minor points off as the place doesn't have hat racks. Of course I'm the only man left in America who takes his hat off to eat dinner so this deficit probably doesn't matter to you. I ordered a Highland single malt scotch, neat, I can't remember which one but they only had the 12 year. The waiter asked if I wanted the 15 year or the 12 year so that made me think that he didn't get the order right when I thought about it after he left the table. I walked to the bar where he was putting in the order just to make sure and the manager stepped in (immediately, where was she hiding?) to show me the bottle so I was assured the order was correct. I didn't have to ask, it came in a proper heavy rocks glass with no hidden upcharge. Very classy. I don't know why anyone would come to a restaurant called "Rare Steakhouse" and order anything but steak, however the salmon traveling to another table did look and smell delicious. Four of us at our table and from appetizer to dessert, not once did the waiter or his three (!) assistant servers have to ask who had what. The filet mignon was perfection. Slightly charred on the outside, truly medium on the inside, so tender I didn't need the sharp dangerous steak knife as I could have used a dull bread knife I think. I was eating with a chef who figured they are using some very high temperature oven which turned out to be the case when the manager visited. The manager, dressed properly in a conservative pants suit, visited us after the meal to ask if everything was to our satisfaction, knowing full well everything was fine because she was out on the floor surreptitiously supervising the whole time. I expect this at a high end steak place, but I very much appreciate there was no discounted service on heavily discounted Downtown Dining Week. She got into a lengthy technical discussion with my chef friend who was duly impressed with the high temperature ovens but much of this conversation sailed over my head. I do know that I am coming back for the ribeye. Is this place worth the price tag? Definitely, yes. The steaks are the best available cuts of meat, the service is unsurpassed, and the cost is the same at the other excellent high end steak places in Milwaukee and cheaper than comparable restaurants in Chicago. The only negative (besides the hat rack situation) would be the seating. The decor is an elegant and appropriate leather and chandeliers style but the peculiar booths are not comfortable for four overweight people. They are romantic for two average size people as you can sit together and look out onto the dining area, they are a curved half oval which looks nice but next time I'm opting for the four top tables with the ample chairs. read more

Fried Chicken LoRusso (agave, thyme, herbed jus) Ordered this lunch dish on a Friday on the suggestion of Blair the bartender, my fav bartender at Rare Milwaukee besides Michael. This dish is excellent. Super crispy chicken on the outside, and steaming hot meat inside. At first I was skeptical because of the lack of sides. What you don't see, however, is the fourth piece chicken on the plate. The pickled onions and herbed jus made a nice vibrant sauce and created random bites of sweet and tart to cut the savory fried chicken (think fried chicken and pickled jalapeños). By the end, the pieces of skin that had fallen off during the meal had collected the remaining bit of herbed jus, which was a nice touch. This dish literally does everything right! read more
