So this place is two blocks away from my apartment and after moving here I was looking for some options for those days where I don't feel like cooking / don't feel like going out too far. Red Mountain Noodle House surpassed those expectations all the way. I thought the food was DELICIOUS. Some of the best quality Chinese I've had in recent months from takeout. I almost didn't want to write this review because this place is such a hidden gem. I'd highly suggest the house special soup and a lot of the hand pulled noodle dishes as well. I thought their dumplings were good but I'm sure there are better things to get on their menu. I will note that this place gets pretty popular at night so if you're going to dine in make sure you understand that and it's also cash only to my knowledge. The staff is super friendly and You can either order from the paper menu or look at the wall sized menu with pictures. We ordered: Fried dumplings Young Zhou Fried Rice Spicy beef over Rice Fried Chicken Cutlet over Rice Ambiance / decor: no frills wooden tables and chairs. Walls are adorned with picture menus. Food: fried dumplings are freshly made onsite. The fried rice and spicy beef are authentically Chinese (aka not Chinese takeout). The only downside was the fried chicken cutlet ... it was a little too crunchy and overcooked. Value: most items on the menu are a bargain at under $10. This is our neighborhood staple. The owners worked really hard everyday, and they treat their regulars warmly. It's hard for us not to be biased- we watched their kids grew up as they assisted alongside their parents. It saves us from many hungry winter nights during the workdays. Our go-tos are usually fried hand-pull noodles of any kind, the spicy and wine marinated chicken feet, dumplings, and the peanut butter sauce noodles. If we got time to sit down and order in the restaurant, we would opt for the soupy hand pull noodles because the soup base is pretty well flavored. They pull their noodles in house, and it gives them a delightfully springy, chewy texture that soaks up all the delicious beef sauce or other toppings they put in! The beef pulled noodles really is a must get for anyone stuck on what to order. Their dumplings are very well seasoned, though a bit on the saltier side. They have tubs of homemade chili oil at each table (it's not very spicy) and I LOVE showering it onto my dumplings for a kick! I really didn't want to review this place and give away an amazing hidden gem. I want to keep it under the radar and all to myself before it becomes a big deal and hipsters start eating here and the prices go up, but as a dutiful Yelper, I feel it is my responsibility to share yummy finds. Their specialty is handpulled noodles. They serve fuzhounese cuisine which is no frills, affordable food. Their handpulled noodles are perfectly bouncy and chewy. There's nothing like a soggy noodle that makes me lose my food boner. I got the house special soup noodle that comes with tripe, tendons, and stewed beef. The portion was huge for $7.50. My friend had the lamb noodle soup that was equally delicious on a chilly night. Add some chili oil for a kick. The fried dumplings were surprisingly amazing. They were bursting with meaty juiciness! Usually fried dumplings are on the drier side, but these were like little pockets of soupy fried meat for $5 for 10. I'm in love with this place. I am giving a very generous rating of two stars since the other items in my group order were acceptable. However, my chicken fried rice, although a solid portion size, contained some inexcusable sanitary violations. I was sifting through my rice when I discovered multiple hairs, or at least multiple pieces of one long hair. The individual pieces were really short and had inconsistent lengths, which leads me to believe that at some point in the cooking process it got chopped up along with the ingredients. I cannot imagine how a professional chef does not notice a long strand of hair on a chopping board, or has the nerve to ignore it and continue chopping. There was even a bit of hair lodged inside a bit of egg, which would be kind of funny if I had not been eating the fried rice. Needless to say, I lost my appetite after coming into contact with the hairs and did not eat another bite. I've attached a photo for reference. (edit) I've decided to update my review to a 4 star experience after I went back a couple of times. The staff there is friendly, the food is solid and quick to come, and I have not encountered another hair. Thus, I've concluded that the experience with the hairs in my rice was an isolated incident and certainly not an indication of a large-scale health violation. Prices have gone up lately by a dollar or two, due to the noodle craze and inflated prices these days. They're open late until 11pm! These are some hardworking people, so I'm glad to give them my business. You might even score a street parking space so that you can run in to grab your order. Even if you don't order in advance, they can whip up an order in no time flat! The beef noodle soup is solid and the seafood noodle is pretty good as well. Just be careful of the shrimp. The heads are still on and they have sharp mandibles, when you bite their heads off and shell them. The noodles themselves have the perfect texture and just the right amount of chewiness. The broth is the perfect accompaniment to the noodles, bringing all the flavors together. If the noodles aren't enough of a meal for you, then get an order or two of either steamed or pan-fried dumplings. Cute little spot near my friend's place on kissena. I love these adorable 'hole in the walls' but its big enough to fit a decent amount of people. Lots of typical chinese food you can order and wanted something quick. We ordered beef with bell peppers which came with wood ear and bamboo shoots as well. Super good not too spicy but its not like your regular green bell pepper it has a kick *just a warning for those who don't like spicy like me! It was super good decent portion for a large. Also ordered steamed dumplings which were delicious can't remember how many were in an order though. It came with a few different parts of beef including tripe, tendons, and small meaty portions. They included bok choy and a boiled egg too. The broth was very savory and flavorful. Towards the ended I decided to add their pepper oil/paste. I think it was made with Sichuan peppers because my mouth is numb as I wrote this review. Nevertheless, I had a great experience. I was holding back on reviewing this place only because it's one of those hidden gems you come across and hope it stays just that way. It's a local hot spot where you'll never find the place empty. With very reasonable prices paired with excellent hand pulled noods, it's a easy choice to go to if you need a cheap delicious meal. Parking is a little tough in the area, but I find it worth it since these are one of the best hand pulled noodle texture around. The noodles are excellent and one of the best I've had in the area. It's got a nice springy texture with the right amount of chewiness in my opinion but that's all subjective to ones preference. The broth is good but not great, it's not as rich as I would like, but it's still pretty good. The meats you choose for your meal are okay, they could be better but it's really all about the noodles here. The stir fried noodles has good flavors and generous portions. The fried dumplings here are a must get for me as they are juicy and super tasty. Overall, the noodles here are what makes this place special. The broth was nice and sweet, but I was really thirsty afterwards (maybe it's the MSG). The tripe, beef tendon, and beef were okay. Some of it had a slightly weird smell/taste to it...which..if it was fresh/correctly treated..shouldn't be the case. I gave it a 4 star because I only had a chance to get take out from this hole in the wall restaurant. I often pass by and notice that it's packed off Cherry and Kissena. The hand-pulled noodles were fresh and chewy. Service was fast and the food was nicely portioned. Soup noodles are supposed to be just as good. I was greeted with a smile right away and was given the option to sit anywhere I like. I observed the restaurant to be small but clean. I ordered the Fresh Pork Hand Pulled Noodles Soup and I really enjoyed it. The chicken broth was not too salty but still had flavor. Pork had flavor as well but I could've done it without the bones. They were all really good, way better than we expected! The noodle, the soup, the fish ball, the pork chop, everything was just absolutely delicious! They're just perfect! We love the fried dumplings here. The skin is slightly crispy, the meat has a lot of flavor, but not too greasy, just perfect! The service was great & fast! The guy who took our order was friendly & polite. The place is small. The decor is nothing special, just like any other typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Generous portion! Got two orders of the beef soup with noodle to see how it would go and I was most certainly pleasantly surprised. The prices were super cheap, $6.00 per order and it came out quick, like under 5 minutes quick. The noodles were bountiful and had a nice stretchy chewy texture to them. The broth was rich, flavorful and contained pieces of stewed beef in it as well as some greens. I added the provided chili oil which had an amazing heat that made the noodles that much better. Got take out from here. Got pan fried dumplings and boiled dumplings (10 each), a seafood stir fried hand cut noodle, beef soup noodle and a vegetable pan fried hand pulled noodle. Total was $30.50 and fed 4 adults. We were stuffed and carb overloaded. All noodle dishes came with an egg - the soup noodle had a soy sauce hard boiled egg (very fragrant 滷蛋), while the stir fried noodles had a pan fried egg. My favorite of all noodle dishes was the vegetable stir fried hand pulled noodle. The other dishes were good as well but soup noodle was too hot today and I like skinnier type of noodles. I like boiled dumplings ($4 for 10) better since we didn't eat the pan fried dumplings ($5 for 10) immediately so it got soggy and felt a bit greasy. Will try pan fried again if we eat in the restaurant next time. No frills and the employees spoke with the two customers (maybe they are regulars?) loudly in Chinese regarding sociopolitical trends in China. I have been visiting this restaurant for the past half a year. The taste is not that bad and the price is good, and it's near my condo. I went there this afternoon and ordered a beef soup noodle. After I took few bites, I saw a big grub floating in my bowl. I should've seen it earlier, but the color of the soup is dark, and the grub is more hard to be realized. It is the most disgusting thing I've seen in my life. The grub can be everywhere but not my plates. I literally ran back home and scratched my gullet to puke everything. Hole in the wall place that serves up great noodles, I was led here by my trusted yelp elite community. Nothing fancy, just straight up chewy handpulled noodles, the way they are supposed to be. I got the lamb bowl with extra stew egg. As a veggie lover, I have to credit this restaurant for being so flexible when I asked if I could have less meat and more veggies. Dont get me wrong, I love meat too. I just thought that we ought to consume more veggies. You know you need your fiber, vitamins and cancer fighting antioxidants. They accomodated, and there was still lots of succulent lamb pieces. The broth was so flavorful without being overly salty. The flavor of the lamb pieces, though, was just a tad too powerful for me. My sister ordered the mix beef noodle soup, which included innards and other parts of a cow some people might be grossed out by. She couldn't stop drinking the soup. The only thing I wish was different about this place? That they'd take rabbit off their menu! I used to have a pet rabbit, and I don't want to think about my furry friend winding up in someone's noodle soup that sells for $5.50. That aside, a meal's a steal here. Red Mountain Noodles House is a small hole in a wall with about 8 tables. Decor and atmosphere is nonexistent, per the usual in Flushing. Chinese menus are plastered all over the wall. If you don't speak Chinese you will have to settle for the takeout menu that has English translations. No worries though - you're not missing out on much. I tried the zha jiang mian (chinese) aka jajangmyeon (korean) aka jajamen (japanese). For hand pulled noodles, there is no better way to test it than some good old pork with soy bean paste. Cmon... being a regular item in the big three East Asian cultures can't go wrong. Red Mountain Noodle House's zjm did not deliver for one simple reason. There just isn't enough zha jiang. Usually when you stir the noodles up with the zha jiang, its supposed to turn reddish from the paste. But the noodles here simply did not have enough zha jiang to mix it with the portion of noodles. Instead of even attempting to bland up my entire portion of noodles, I just took half the noodles out and mixed up the other half. With enough zha jiang to go around, the noodles tasted pretty good, especially for a price tag of 5 bucks (which is also what brought this to a 3 star). As for the other half? Grab some peanut butter, dark soysauce, sesame oil, vinegar and stir that sucker up till its creamy. I'll let you play around with the ratios but I like 1-1 pb and soysauce. Put that concoction onto noodles and mix it up. I just impressed your girlfriend. read more
