We got here in the afternoon for a late lunch. The restaurant was about 1/3 full and we were seated quickly. We ordered the combination sausage and meatball house specialty plate (boiled sausage and meatball plate), Santa Barbara citrus beer, and the Aebleskiver for dessert. The boiled sausage and meatballs were pretty bland. The beer was good. The Aebleskiver was cold and hard. I was actually expecting it to be warm, like a freshly baked or fried dessert. Overall, I would say Danish food is not for me. I have more of like an unami and spicy kind of palette and I like the texture of grilled and broiled foods rather than boiled. Stopped into the Red Viking for another take on a traditional Danish breakfast and they were delicious. No wait and a beautiful outdoor take on the street, we relaxed a cup of coffee, and each ordered a Ebleskiver & Danish Sausage breakfast each with a couple of fried eggs. Ebleskivers are like a large, powdered donut holes served with Raspberry syrup. A Really tasty treat to go along with the unique Danish Sausage which is much different than an American Sausage and was not overwhelming in flavor but was delicious to eat. We also had lunch another day that consisted of Danish Sausage, mashed potatoes, and red cabbage which was a very delicious meal that did not weigh us down and had a very unique taste that is much different than the American versions. First time ever going to Solvang and went to eat here with my family and boyyyy let me tell you... not good. We ordered the platter in which has wings, onion rings, celery and some cheese bread (I don't remember what it was called) and that was disgusting. The wings tasted like if it was sitting in the freezer for a while and put in the microwave... we just ordered appetizers just to have something light while we walked around the village.. if the appetizers were bad, I can't imagine how the rest of the food would be or tasted.. We visited Danish Village in Solvang in late March and made a quick stop at each of the must-see venues in town. One of which is the "Red Viking Restaurant", popular for serving the "Ableskivers". The lady at the cashier was friendly and accommodating. The space inside the restaurant was fairly small and lightly dimmed. We had one order of Ableskiver, which means "apple slices" in Danish. It came with three wonderful looking puff balls, sprinkled with powdered sugar and topped with raspberry jam. The Ableskivers are old-fashioned Danish pancakes and are comparable in quality to the customary pancakes we are accustomed to. We visited Solvang for the weekend and decided to eat pretty late in the afternoon after a lot had closed down already. We tried this spot since we had seen it earlier and it looked like they had a good menu. Maybe im not a fan of traditional Danish food but my plate was pretty bland. I got the meatball and sausage. It came with a side of mashed potatoes and what looked like radish. It was alright, nothing special. We also tried the smorgasbord and it really wasn't worth it either. Don't get me wrong. I had the meatball and sausage combo, it was very good but was not filling whatsoever and the scoop of mashed potatoes was the size of a golf ball, meat balls smaller. They could easily double up the sausage and minut meatball with the price that they charge and that would make their customers extremely happy, doubt they will, they must like the low, average three star ratings. As for the service, there were no issues and our server was on top of it. Whatever you do, don't get those pancake balls. Donut holes are way better! Please serve more food for what you charge! My family usually goes to Arne's but they closed earlier than when we got in town so we decided to go to Red Viking. My girlfriend and I drove out of the way to go to Solvang cus I raved about danish open face sandwhiches and we get to this place a half an hour before close only for the lady to go oh we're not serving. She told me some story about the server calling out as there is a table literally getting served right in front of us. I plead with her and tell her how we drove about an hour out of our way to get Danish food so I could show it to my girlfriend who's never had it and the girl just stared blankly at us. One star cus we couldn't even get served while the place was open. Luckily Bit O Denmark was open so we got open faced sandwhiches there. They were good. I'd recommend Arne's over the rest though. My family and I popped into the Red Viking for my mom's birthday dinner because she wanted to try something new. The staff was quick and on top of things (even though the restaurant filled up fast!), which makes sense because the food was amazing! I highly recommend trying everything- I think we nearly did! My little one is a picky eater and we were a large party but our server, Savannah, handled it all without ever making us feel like a bother. There were two other staff members, who's names I did not catch, that were also very sweet and helpful when we had menu questions or needed anything in general. Let's face it. It is a tourist restaurant. However, it felt more like a locals' place The wait staff was kind and efficient. The menu is limited but good. My wife loved everything. The red cabbage was very different; however, a good different. The dinner salad was very well thought out and good. It got suddenly busy and our waiter forgot part of our meal (salad and bread). A subtle reminder was all it took to get him hopping and getting the missing things. The restaurant was plain. However, it was a very enjoyable meal. The experience was a disaster from start to finish. The service was slow, with a long wait before anyone even acknowledged our existence. Once we finally got our food, it was cold and unappetizing. The portions were ridiculously small for the price, and the quality was downright dreadful. These two house specialities come with soup or salad- they were out of the soup and after looking at other reviews (after our visit) it was probably for the best. We also asked for mayonnaise and an add-on order of chicken tenders, but the waiter completely forgot both. They didn't even provide a fifth set of utensils--because, you know, why would a family of five need them? We had to get up to ask for service, and then later, to ask for the check. When we told the cashier the food was cold, he didn't seem to care. We left starving and beyond disappointed. This place is nothing more than a tourist trap--overpriced, underwhelming, and completely lacking in quality. We left wishing we spent out time and money anywhere but here. We had a delightful hot breakfast at The Red Viking out on the front porch under a shade tree. We both had the eggs benedict which came with home fried potatoes. My group of 10 ended up finding this place to be one of the few that could fit us all at dinner. After much thought on what to order, most of us chose the combination Danish sausage and meatball because being in Solvang, we should try Dutch food right? I've never had either one before and they were not what I expected. I don't think I necessarily have the palate for it. Not exactly the meat flavor you expect from either one and the texture is almost like a meat tofu. For dinner you could add a side salad, but I had said "ok" to that so quickly without realizing it was an additional charge. Next time I come, I'll probably go for the buffet because it's basically the same price as my meal but has more options (including cookies!). What helped eat the meatball and sausage was the red cabbage and salad. And between the 2 meat, I prefer the meatball slightly. The captains plate, which included fried shrimp and fish and chips, was probably the best one I tried from the group.
