Delicious food. We ordered 1) my husband's filet mignon - mwah, perfectly cooked and seasoned, 2) cioppino - my daughter said it was good, and 3) my vegan meal that the chef was able to accommodate for me- glass noodles, Swiss chard, potatoes with a curry sauce, so good!, and 4) younger daughter got their big old salad with the blue cheese crumbles, which she liked but not the blue cheese haha. I had to laugh- there is something about Port Orford where the restaurants are all running out of food/menu items, so the first thing the waiter says to us is not to tell us the specials but what they are out of. We obviously aren't up on Port Orford and what a lovely surprise to discover this town and the restaurant Redfish. As two architects, we enjoyed the attention to detail in the design. The metal work around the bar is fabulous. We ate two meals at Redfish and both were excellent, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. I had a salad with seasoned grapes and added grilled shrimp. My spouse had clam chowder and lamb burger. Enjoyed my 2019 Independence Day dinner with a friend here. Fantastic view and a dinner menu selection that is curated and at first appeared limited but touched on all kinds of appetites and food groups and palates once I read through it. Fun fact: friend forgot her glasses and so I read all the menu options with key ingredients to her, so kudos for having ingredients that people can pronounce and explaining what dishes are under the more sophisticated items so that the rest of us can read it to our trusting friends without improvising too much. My friend ordered the house greens salad with the smoked steelhead and the steelhead was SMOKED TO ORDER. This was amazing, fillet was still tender and forkable to split apart for the salad, and made for a great entreé on a chilly night. We split a crab and shrimp risotto appetizer and it was creamy and hinted of comfort food and Alfredo and was really good. Shrimp were on the smaller side but the crab chunks were distinguishable and juicy; now I wish I had asked what type of rice was in it, it was either a different kind than what I have tasted before in risottos or was cooked to really bring out the starches in it. Either way, would so order this again! Tip: even the appetizer risotto portion was enough to split for two! Alright, now for the star of the show for me: the Seafood Cioppino entrée: generous portion, definitely on the spicier side, great hearty broth, bread slices was toasted quite dark on one side, but as they soaked up the broth they were lovely regardless. A variety of seafood in the soup, I spotted several multi-bite chunks of salmon, clams, and one perfect still intact and beautiful oyster. I'm sure there might have been more seafood types in there but those stood out the most. Can't wait to return again! Dishes carried past us to the diners looked delectable (we sat at the bar as we came in without a reservation on a busy night, lucky to score those two bar seats) as it still felt cozy and private there). The only thing that I appreciated about Redfish was how pleasant our server (Ava) was and how cold the martinis were. To begin, we made a 5:15 reservation for four. We got a call the morning of our reservation informing us that a very large party was coming in and would we mind moving our reservation to 6:15. (In hindsight I should have just canceled.) We were coming in from several time zones away and wanted an early meal (not to mention delayed flights and a five+ hour drive from the airport) but we acquiesced because we were on the road and had no real knowledge of port orford. I specifically asked if we were going to get the short end of the stick arriving right after such a large party and was told 'Not at all! We're moving you so you don't get the short end of the stick!' No apology or anything... Take it or leave it. But upon arrival there were multiple four-tops of diners clearly not a part of the large party, so it was evident we were simply bumped. I can understand that, but I'd have preferred they'd have just be straight and apologetic. But then to add insult to injury, when we arrived they gave us the worst table in the house. Right next to the door... Where all the incoming customers gathered waiting to be seated and a blast of air would blow when the front door was opened. I had a great view of all the other diners enjoying their dinner as they had planned though. My wife ordered a glass of Prosecco and I a martini. When the server came around to deliver our daughters' meals (which we ordered ahead of our own meals) I asked for another drink... but after waiting and waiting and with a clear view of the bar and servers, I realized it had been forgotten. I had to go to the bar myself to ask for it. And it was 45 minutes before my wife was asked for another glass of prosecco. I ordered the ribeye ($65)... and it came in two pieces that clearly were not from the same cut of meat or were divided beyond recognition. I asked the server if it was in fact two different pieces of meat because I was so baffled and was told, 'Of course not! We always cut our ribeyes in half.' If they matched and had the same temp I might have agreed. But try as I might those pieces did not go together. The clams were tough and unseasoned and the toast that came with them... well, the picture explains it. Terrible - F. We were so looking forward to a nice night out, and left incredibly disappointed. So much so that I'm writing this review. The only negative review I've ever left online for a restaurant. Maybe it was just a bad night. I can understand - they happen. But if we ever end up in Port Orford again, we will never go back to Redfish. read more

Started off coming in and having excellent service and double screwdriver from the bartender Aimie who also informed us she was named after the great classic from Pure Prairie League song "Amie". Then after we got another drink we got a lovely pulled pork sandwich that wasn't even on the menu, and it was magical! The pulled pork was mouth watering and was gone almost instantly. To make things even more fantastic and fulfilling is we got a hug from Chef Coy which was the perfect dessert. Ambience is a Ten. Restaurant overlooks the beach, ocean and a beautiful rock island. Cioppino was outstanding and literally packed with a ton of seafood as well as a steelhead fillet on top. It's kinda casual but definitely leans toward fancy. A variety of choices for sure. This was such a wonderful find in port Orford. We were staying in Gold Beach and weren't happy with the options there. We drove over to port Orford for the beautiful battle rock area and found this restaurant right by the beach and visitor center. The items we ordered were great and they had a very lively and engaging staff as well. The fish tacos and cioppino were quite good. Food was fine. But whole civilizations rose and fell from the time when the order was put in by the server and the time it was served to the table. Plus there was a fly problem, not due to cleanliness, but because the door to the patio stay open for so long they keep entering so even though you eat inside, you keep having to brush them away. For starters we went with the steamed clams and could have lived inside that bowl of delicious coconut milk broth for a week! Absolutely fantastic grilled wild salmon dinner. Unusually large portion and cooked to perfection. Field green salad extremely fresh and tasty, with many included goodies such as cranberries, hazelnuts, grapes, and excellent citrus dressing. I really wanted to like this restaurant. I was excited to eat here. The menu is enticing. It is situated on a head offering spectacular views. I'd checked it out in advance, reading all of the reviews warning of long waits so felt I was prepared. I was wrong. We arrived at 6:30 pm and were told to expect a 30-40 minute wait. No problem. The gallery next door was open so we whiled away the time browsing colorful pieces. Then meandered back, assuming another ten minutes. Maybe. I am grateful that places are open at all during this surge and can deal with staffing shortages. However, the challenge seemed less due to understaffing, more due to a chaotic approach to traffic management. It begins with a well intentioned reservation system. They state online that they now only accept reservations for parties of five or larger. Seems like a strategy borne from likely unpleasantness stemming from cancellations. So, fair enough. Its meant to be first come, first served. You show up, put your name on the list, wait to be called. Though the phone was ringing non-stop and the harried staff did add names to the list. The call you back feature is hampered by the time lag between sone folks who have gone away and take awhile to arrive, while others stay hopefully put. In the interim, tables sit empty, often not bussed, while the hungry crowd grows and the ruder ones rise. For example, after we'd been there 70 minutes (after being told 30 to 49), some loud people came through, said they wanted to wait at the bar, and were promptly ushered in. This surprised me a great deal. No one gad even offered us that option. I thought the bar was off limits, frankly. There were boxes, bottles, and miscellaneous things cluttering the end of it. Then another couple, who seemed to be locals, did the same thing. I understand giving preference to locals but we are older folks, 70 and 66 years old. You'd think someone might have suggested we take a seat at the bar after waiting close to an hour and a half. Or sooner, to be honest. Okay. Finally, as I began to seriously flag and thought about just chucking it in, we were led to a table. I stayed positive and appreciative, thanking the hostess. After 25 minutes, 25!, of sitting with no water, no menus, nothing, I flagged down a passing server and asked if we might get some water. Please. I was dehydrated by this point. 10 minutes later, I asked a different person. Finally, some arrived. The server apologized for how busy they were but shared that Wednesdays have become "crazy." Hmmmm. Good idea to anticipate? We seized the moment of her handing us water and ordered right then. We'd certainly had time to contemplate the menu and it was getting late. No telling when she might make it back. We stayed positive, deep breathing, sipping our water, studying the skeezy drunk at the bar who used the same tired hit line on three different women. No point in creating more stress; but honestly, it was another half hour plus before we received our food. Meanwhile, several folks at the bar plus two other tables who came in well after us, had been served and were eating. It turned into a kind of cosmic joke where all you can do is laugh. My partner ordered the pork chops. They arrived dry and rather tough. One bite was enough for me. Though the chutney was very good, the potatoes flavorful, the Brussels sprouts plentiful. In fact, it was a very generous plate of unevenly prepared food. I ordered the rockfish, the special of the day. It was sautéed in butter, the predominant flavor. It was served plated atop a little mound of (also buttery) couscous with shaved asparagus and toasted hazelnuts. It was flavorful and turned out to be the best part of my meal. I enjoyed savoring it. We did manage to get our waters refilled at one point. I wanted to order wine but never got the opportunity. Still, we did tip generously. I was a server once upon a time; I understand making a living. I would say that if you have 3 long hours for dinner (the amount of time it took for ours from arrival to payment), and want a.....unique...experience, with food that tries very hard and almost succeeds, you will enjoy yourself at Redfish. As I ponder the entire evening, I am not sure more staff is the answer, though it would help. Those poor souls were definitely running ragged. But an examination of service protocols, seating protocols, and kitchen delivery might be helpful. I've been to many an upscale, creative restaurant; it just doesn't need to be as backed up and chaotic as it was. 13 tables: with two servers, a front desk hostess, a bartender, and another floater on duty. Should have worked, right? Still, all in all, I want to stress that I am grateful places are open during these trying times. So I will continue to support endeavors that are trying. Wife and I took a 3k mile motorcycle road trip up the 101 from San Diego to Cascade Loop in Washington. We enjoyed many amazing views and restaurants throughout the length of the trip. This was definitely one of the restaurants. We knew the Oregon Coast was widely recognized for their refined seafood. This place had beautiful views, terrific service and a clam chowder to rave about. We ordered a large chowder, a well served portion with bread was presented. Hands down, the we were warned of the hearty bowl size. They weren't kidding, one of the best chowders I've ever indulged in. Highly recommend this restaurant.
