We were blown away by the quality of the food at Martin. We dine regularly at fine dining establishments, and Martin shined in terms of food and service. The decore is very comfortable without being pretentious. Appetizers: + Heirloom beet salad - amazing cheese + Carnaroli lobster risotto - good portion and tasty without being too rich Mains: + Pork chop - unbelievably tender and flavorful + Duck - served medium and perfectly complemented with veggies and a grain + Black Angus beef tenderloin - incredibly tasty cut, melted in your mouth with a light sauce that featured the meat and did not overpower it Dessert: + Chocolate cake with homemade ice cream - we subbed in coconut ice cream - it was amazing + Assorted homemade ice creams - all were excellent especially the fresh fruit in it + Each person got a min-spatula to share desserts with - cute Overall we had an amazing time. This was my second visit to Restaurant Martin. The first was a fabulous Saturday Brunch. This time it was for the best meal I've had on this trip to Santa Fe. The menu shows the chef to be inventive and the food shows that he executes superbly. Surrounding are pleasant and the service is professional. I stated with the tuna tartar which was great. MK had the cold pea soup which was fabulous. For a main course I had the lamb sampler which was also excellent. While Santa Fe has some top end restaurants this has to be at the top of the top end or awful darn close in my opinion. read more

Food: 1 star; reading the menu gave us some hope even if nothing stood out as exceptionally creative... the boneless lamb shank app, for example, was completely tasteless (which is quite an accomplishment with that piece of meat) overly complex, and incoherent... Going with a three-star rating this time, Martin, not because your service was sub-par or your bathrooms weren't gorgeous or your food presentation wasn't astonishing--for all of those reasons and more, Martin, you're one of Santa's finest--but because it's the quality and taste of the food that really matters, Martin! The taste of the food and the wine!! We'll start with the wine list. As I pored over it, I couldn't help but wonder: when are Santa Fe restaurants going to take Ferrari Carano off their lists!? And Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc at $14 a glass!? Come come, Martin. Come come. The by-the-glass pours were small, though the glasses themselves stylishly large. The apps tasted strange--my oysters, his scallops--but maybe we got what we deserved. We're desert-dwellers, and we know the rule: No seafood when you're thousands of miles from the sea!!!! The lamb entree ($40 including split-plage charge) was incredibly good. Incredibly good. We should have just gotten two of those and called it a day. And last but not least, the desserts were works of art...and I'll give credit where credit is due to whoever conceived of the basil sponge. Tastes like it looks. Truffle cake was molten and simultaneously delicate. Nevertheless, I was still hungry by the time we left, which no doubt amplified the sticker shock I underwent upon receiving the check. Enjoyed a delightful Sunday brunch with my husband. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the restaurant was cozy. I started with the shrimp tortilla soup and it had the perfect level of heat and creamy texture. I loved it and wish I could have more. My husband and I took advantage of Santa Fe Restaurant Week. I ordered the salmon which was flavorful and delicious and my husband had the steak which was also very good. We also ordered a side dish of polenta which was crispy and very tasty. And our waiter and his attendant were very attentive. The exterior and interior of the building could us a little sprucing up. We were disappointed to see no linen on the tables. We were seated in the back dining room and thought there were too many tables and the room was very noisy. If you wish it they will come. Santa Fe's finest and random set of out of towners descend upon Restaurant Martin in droves. We had an 8pm reservation for 3 and ended up waiting a good 15 minutes. I admit, I was surprised - the crowds and wait times are more indicative of what I'd expect in larger cities. It's proof that word of Martin has spread. I wish I could say that the place is worthy of the buzz. Food was ok, but not great. The menu seems focused on concentrating simple ingredients and flavors versus adding in sauces or gastronomic techniques that are the craze - I actually prefer simpler foods versus overflavored or deconstructed foods so I was looking forward to the meal. While the food sounded promising, the dishes were not memorable or creative. The butternut squash soup was good, but the flavor profile was fairly standard. The pork belly appetizer (one of my faves) was ok - pork belly was overcooked and tough. The entrees themselves were good, but again a little lackluster for a restaurant this caliber. The steak was cooked fine, but nothing special. Duck breast had a little too much fat. My seared ahi tuna was ho-hum. The best dish was probably a dessert that played on apples and cider. Service was fine and ambiance was also good. But I walked away having signed a big check and not having felt like I had an amazing experience worthy of the price tag and a place with such a reputation. Don't get me wrong. Food wasn't bad. It just tasted uninspired. I was hoping for a storm and ended up experiencing a drizzle. I hope Martin doesn't fizz out and based on the crowds, I don't think it will. The food looked exceptional and the atmosphere was NOT SOUTHWEST for once. Sometimes I feel like everyone in Santa Fe is at least 25 years older than me. For this reason, when I go to a new place, I prefer to enjoy a sip & app at the bar instead of sitting in the dining room... too much of a nursing home atmosphere for me. But I read too many reviews to sit a the bar when I went to Restaurant Martin. Reservations were at 6:30 and the table was ready when I arrived. My server was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, happy to recommend a Kim Crawford Savignon Blanc to go with my ahi tuna entree. The ubiquitous basket of bread arrived on the table shortly after I ordered, but Gluten and I are no longer in love. So, no rating on the bread. Luckily, my entree was not far behind, so I was not tortured for long. The Ahi Tuna Entree: Presented on a rectangular plate. There were two tempura style sweet potato medallions and a colorful salad flanking two pieces of breaded tuna. BREADED? Who breads tuna? I clearly expected this to be a "safe" dish for me to enjoy in spite of my allergies. I have never had ahi coated in anything but pepper... So, disappointingly, I had to shear off quite a bit of my tasty treat. And that was that. $150 dinner & wine (worth it, but still too busy for someone with allergies to really enjoy.) read more

To be honest, I returned for the sake of nostalgia...and it wasn't just me, I was accompanied by 8 of my posse from the recent Motion conference. Last year, about this time, 14 of us, all speakers from the conference, invaded and took over a table in the outside dining room and literally had the meal of our lives. My beet salad with "soil" was incredible and I forced the other 13 to have a bite, much to their joy. This year, we returned, hoping for a repeat. It was very good, and they were very patient, but there were no true foodgasms like last time. I think it was the conversation that spoiled our palates... In a word excellent. Brought my wife here for our anniversary this summer. Martin Rios has been doing great things in Santa Fe for a long time he was one of the chefs who created Santa Fe Cuisine. The old House at the Eldorado under his direction became legendary. He has now started his own spot and it is very good. The wine list is short but of very high quality. We ordered scallops and the roasted chicken. The scallops were good but the chicken was divine. It was served over a truffled mac & cheese orzo. We both salivate when we think about it. We are headed back to Santa Fe after Christmas and we have reservations to return. read more

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place during a brief stay in Santa Fe. Located a bit further out from the Plaza, we happened to walk by on our way to another restaurant. We could tell this place promised to deliver something special, and ditched our other dinner destination (though there may have been a brief detour for some margaritas first...). Oh boy, was our meal delicious. The flavors were rich but subtle and varied. The menu was a fusion of American, French and Asian styles and flavors, and each of the 4-5 items we ordered were consistently delicious. The service was excellent as well. Our server was professional without being robotic, and his formalities came across as endearing rather than pretentious (for example, he referred to me as "the lady", which I got a kick out of). Restaurant reminded me of dining out in nyc, maybe a restaurant you'd find on the UES as the average age of the clientele was well over 50. Service was good. What a completely charming spot with amazing food. At our table we tried Lamb, Salmon, a Veggie Sampler, and Duck. All dishes were raved about! I had the Veggie Sampler and it was so pretty and delicious. Reminded me of a Japanese presentation; with each vegetable dish is a small bowl all presented together. Each dish was exquisite. This restaurant has the loveliest patio that is completed shaded and flower-filled. The service was attentive, professional, and friendly. I very much enjoyed my $13 red and green chile chicken enchiladas, served with a small green lettuce salad with queso fresco. Both chile sauces were very well done: the red was smoky, and the green was fresh, slightly spicy, and delicious. I just wish there was more chile, and chile or more seasoning on the chicken itself. Restaurant Martin was opened in late September, 2009 by Martin Rios, former executive chef at Old House at Eldorado Hotel, Inn of the Anasazi, and Geronimo, along with his wife, Jennifer. This guy is good! The apps were great, both the roasted quail and the short ribs ravioli, but my pumpkin rissotto was other worldly (and the tomato millefeuille it came with blew my tongue away). Service is spotty; Rafael was good but didn't communicate well and actually waited to pour the wine before he told us that we should have ordered a different one. And when he came back, it turned out they only had half an open bottle of that one! read more

I was visiting my parents in Santa Fe for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, we did the long walk through all the lights and art galleries. Amazing!!! Snow started to fall halfway, and we were covered in flakes. My dad made a dinner reservation here, so we arrived very cold and hungry! The menu was fixed special for Xmas Eve. I have to put this meal up there on my list of all time favorites. The food was amazing and interesting. I don't mind paying a bit for something I know I could never recreate at home. But I also left with some interesting ideas for flavor combinations. I ordered the vegetable sampler and everything on it was delicious. If I could have licked the plate I would have. My husband had the sea bass and my son the beef tenderloin. Everything was perfectly cooked. We almost skipped desert and I'm so glad we didn't. The sorbets were so fresh and had the most concentrated flavors. My three year old who didn't really eat (it's not the best place for kids, no really kid friendly option) had the mint chocolate chip ice cream, which was made from fresh mint grown right there. He loved it and so did all of the grown ups. The ambiance was nice, but nothing unusual. We ate inside, so I can't comment on the outside seating. read more

We had dinner at Restaurant Martin on Christmas Eve 2010, then strolled over to Canyon Road for the farolito (tealight candles on sand inside brown paper bags, lining the road, the gardens, everywhere!) walk. It's a small, lovely restaurant. The wait staff was polite and knowledgeable about menu items. It was a prix fixe menu with a number of choices in each category. The beet salad was perfect, each flavor set off all others, masterful. My husband's butternut squash soup was delicious. I'm writing this over a month later and cannot remember my entree other than that it was fish and delicious (not done all the way through, although it was a very thick slice of fish) and the side dishes complemented the main course perfectly. Martin is an amazing chef, the ambiance is sweet and simple, the atmosphere was energetic and understated, a combination I didn't think was possible. read more

Went for brunch. Restaurant was empty despite one other table. Server seemed spacy, though his intentions were good. Food was very underwhelming. Smoked salmon benedict was downright bad--couldn't eat the salmon or lobster. I ended up just eating the poached eggs and the edges of the brioche that didn't have salmon on them. Let me start with the obvious: the food is always outstanding. It is our go-to restaurant for out of town guests because the vegetarian and vegan options are are interesting as the carnivore choices. But... This year we went to the Wine Dinner and were sat in the annex. Usually we are on the patio or - Covid allowing - in the main house. The room appeared to be filled to capacity and the noise level was deafening. To the point where the guest across from me was unintelligible, while those beside me could only be heard by leaning towards them. And, no I'm not an aging boomer who won't invest in a hearing aide. The dining experience was compromised by the noise and by the "banquet" service to the point that I consider leaving. I fully understand the need to maximize paying guests at these events but there needs to be some standards of a fine dining experience maintained. The owner has been profiled in our local New Mexican talking about the challenge of staffing in the current environment, and of the need to (re)train staff so I recognize their efforts. But... Added to that the wine rep was focused on the idiosyncrasies of the wine maker and the labels on the bottle rather than the wines themselves. Since he is an employee of Gallo - the parent of the winery - and was in town to staff the tent at Magers Field with multiple brands being poured that might be excused, but - again - some standard needs to be presented. We will be back. We really enjoy the food. But we will pay more attention to the environment we are stepping into. read more

This was by far the best meal my husband and I had in 8 days in Santa Fe. The pork belly app? AHHMAAAZIIING! Truly original and sublime. If I could have licked the plate, I would have. I had the pork chop and my husband had the steak. Both were cooked perfectly, which is hard to do with a 3 inch, bone-in pork chop. Not one second overcooked- perfectly juicy. The sauce on my man's steak was simple and complementary, not over powering. Only change I would make is the bread, but that is a very small criticism. In an age where "Big & Bold" (read: salty) are the annoying buzzwords in the chef community, it was refreshing to eat Martin's more thoughtful, nuanced and delicious food. This was the highlight, fine-dining experience of our recent trip to Santa Fe. We shared appetizers (scallop risotto, lump crab meat) and entrees (beef tenderloin and pork chop) - all absolutely delicious! The wine list has great range with very nice offerings at all price points. Some constructive comments..... the bread is nothing special. While we loved our meal, it did occur to me that our experience lacked local twist. I wasn't looking for green chile or a fried egg on top or anything like that......just might have wanted a sense that this was fine-dining in Santa Fe. Difficult to find parking. It's in a small old house with not the most appealing atmosphere compared to other upscale restaurants with similarly priced fare. Seating is very close to other tables. We didn't realize they charged 7.50 for still water . We were rushed the whole time and asked to order our food and appetizer at the same time. Beer and wine only with no cocktails. The bread was tough and semi-warm; the butter was so hard you could not spread it, and had no flavor. Ordered the pork belly appetizer. The oysters were well cooked and perfectly sized. The pork belly was very salty. The main crispy skin chicken dish was very very dry; though the rest of the dish gnocchi, mushrooms, and onions were tasty. The tenderloin had minimal flavor and was a very small portion. We didn't get dessert due to the overall experience. Once we finished our 7.50 bottle of water we were not offered any thing else, guess it was time to go! We've been to many comparably priced dining experiences in Santa Fe with way better food, service, and atmosphere , so won't be returning to this one. ‍ read more
