Was in the area for an appointment, looked on Yelp for suggestions for breakfast from my Yelp community and this was an absolute hit for breakfast. Service was great, atmosphere even better. Nicely decorated inside, music playing softly in the background. There are very few restaurants with vegan options in San Pedro, so we were happy to find that Rex had a few. If you're in the area and need somewhere with vegan options, this is probably your best bet. I wanted to like this place, its cute and close to my loft, but wasn't in the least bit impressedwith the food or service. Granted, the crowd started up, but the waiter was very robotish and unfriendly. Just because you paint a smile on your face, doesn't mean you mean it, or it makes you nice. I got an omelette that was bland, just like the potatoes on the side. The only thing that saved the meal was the ketchup the waitress slammed on the table. I found this place because I had to entertain some friends who were visiting from out of town. I'm not from San Pedro area but turned to the good-ole trusty Yelp for a good breakfast place. The place was great. Great staff, great food. I order the spinach omelette and breakfast potato. When I saw my friends's fruit bowl, I asked to change the potato to fruit. NO PROBLEM. The server switched it out in no time with no complain. She was so nice. All of my friends loved their dishes and the FRUIT BOWL. It's nothing like other places' old nasty fruit bowl. All of the fruites were cut up fresh - pineapples, strawberries, melons, grapes, and cantalopes. I would have paid extra for the fruit bowl if I had to. First, we're losing a gem. Jose, who has worked at Rex's Cafe for about 30 years is retiring and going back to Mexico this September. This review is more about Jose than Rex's Cafe. Rex's Cafe is awesome, the food is delicious, the service impecable and it is so clean, even the bathroom is spotless. I met Jose about 10 years ago at Rex's Cafe. He is like a perpetual motion machine, making sure that everything is take care of at the restaurant. He busses tables, serves food and coffee, takes care of the register, and more than anything provides a great and friendly smile ot everyone that comes into the restaurant. It is not a total loss because his son and daughter will continue to work there. if you have chance to go to Rex's Cafe before September 1st, 2011, do it, and please tell Jose that Alex sent you. read more

My parents discovered this little gem together, and my first time dining here was on Father's Day early in the morning. We came early because my parents didn't want to wait in line for breakfast, (notice how there was a line...it definitely means it's worth dining here). Presentation: Right off the bat, I loved the exterior of the restaurant. Its very bright and has its own personality. It just draws you in! The restaurant is very earthy inside, and has a vintage feeling! Its decorated nicely. There's not that many seats as the restaurant is pretty small and cozy, and it fills up pretty fast! Food: YUM! I love this place, i completely forgot about it until I had an amazing spinach and shroom omelet the other day. then I membered Pedro had an awesome omelet spot that I use to go to with my Grams after church. Had breakfast with the girls at Rex's this morning once again. The soup of the day was Chicken Tortilla and it was excellent. If it is ever the soup of the day when you are there, make sure to try it., you will not be disappointed. Everything else we ordered was very good too and the coffee was hot and strong. The waitress service was not terrible, but I think the girls could be a bit more attentive. They tend to congregate behind the counter when not serving food, they need to check on their customers instead of chatting to each other. For many years, until about a year and a half ago, the Hispanic gentleman that was working there was always ready to refill your coffee cup, bring more creamer, bring the to go box, etc. He is surly missed by us customers. read more

What an awesome litle place! Good service, good people, and GOOD food! I got a California turkey sandwich, which was awesome if a bit "bready." My mom's clam chowder was fantastic, as was my salad (both are served with grilled bagels... yummmm!) Terrifically yummy!! This is a great little breakfast gem in the middle of San Pedro. Apparently it is a favorite of my running group, and I can see why! Small place, but they know how to pack the tables in. They have a wide variety of selections on the menu, with some great variations. Within our group there was a Denver omelette, a Greek omelette( tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, fresh basil, and topped with feta cheese), house special egg plate(cheese, jalepenos, peppers,tomatoes & comes with tortillas on the side) and Rex's omelette (turkey sausage, cheese, mushrooms and onions). I got the Denver omelette and it was fabulous. There was a terrific amount of ham, onions and peppers, which makes me very happy. I got potatoes (if you want hash browns you have to tell them hash browns and not potatoes like I said... oops!), and wheat toast on the side. I focused on the eggs and toast since that was the happiest part of the plate. Yummy! I got a blueberry/almond muffin to go (that is going away as I write this). The service here is fabulous! Frequent refills on coffee (which is very tasty and not weak), and not over solicitous ("how's everything tasting?" I hate that phrase!!). They get you what you need, but they don't hover over you needlessly. They have a job to do, and they get it done in a friendly and efficient manner! We went on little vacation down in San Pedro this weekend and found this little gem highly rated on both Yelp and another travel site. Very much so deserved so we ended up going to breakfast there both days! We got the same waitress for both visits who welcomed us back this morning and was wonderful and sweet even though she was swamped. Food was awesome and filling (thank heavens we were planning a lot of walking later in the day) The boyfriend is now concerned that I am going to suggest the drive down from SB just for breakfast from now on. This is one of my favorite places for breakfast in San Pedro. From the cinnamon café late to the fresh squessed grapefruit juice the drinks are fresh and flavorful. Mom had the machaca omelette with hash browns and a muffin. The muffins are made in house and the sesame lemon is a must have. This time i has the huevos Rexeros which was a nice twist on huevos rancheros. The pancakes are also good but very large and dense. Small patio seating and inside fits about 40 ppl. Parking is also limited to the surround street. Overall this place is great and ill keep coming back. read more

Everyones meals were good just not great service. I could understand if they were busy but considering the place was almost empty and they couldnt refill our coffee is disappointing to me. We had a errand to run in San Pedro and so we thought we'd try out a local breakfast spot. Searching Yelp, we found the highly rated Rex Cafe. San Pedro is a very "blue collar" neighborhood with small, crowded houses and apartments. Though not a ritzy area, it is very clean and neat. You don't find cars parked on front lawns or broken windows. Rex Cafe is on a busy residential corner across from a liquor store. There is no parking, so we had to drive around a bit to get street parking. They were very busy and there were six parties ahead of us for a 800 sq. ft. dining room. One waitress acted as the hostess and signed us in and gave me a nice mug of coffee. We had a 30 minute wait, but it was a beautiful day and the coffee was good. Maybe it was because it was so bright and beautiful outside, but the inside seemed very dark and drab. It looked like an old school Mexican restaurant with big thick wooden tables, chairs and earth colored walls. It was completely packed and there were lots of servers going back and forth. They had a nice selection of breakfast and lunch items with several specialty items like Egg's Benedict, Stuffed French Toast, Savory Stuffed French Toast. I tried the "Green Eggs Cabrillo", which was grilled English muffins topped with ham, tomato, spinach, poached eggs, melted jack cheese and their wonderful fresh made green salsa. I had the dish with crispy hash browns and really enjoyed the eggs. The hash browns were unfortunately mushy on the inside. I suspect, they used par-boiled or packaged potatoes to make the hash browns. We also got the stuffed french toast, which was not as good as we had expected. The portion seemed small and was not very "exciting" compared to other stuffed French toasts that I have had. The French toast was served with eggs and sausages. The service was friendly and attentive. We had a nice time at Rex but I don't think that I would return anytime soon. The difficulty of parking, the long wait, the drab environment and the "hit or miss" nature of the food is off putting to me. There are several famous diners in San Pedro that I think I'll try before I come back to Rex. read more

We are in love with the breakfasts here! So good! Their steak and eggs is amazingly good, well prepared and simple. The oatmeal is always delicious and fresh. I wish they used a better quality bacon, but that has been, so far, my only complaint with the restaurant. I get breakfast here with my family before Crafted opens on Fridays. So far everything we've had has been wonderful. Chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, french toast, pancakes... we will not be going anywhere else for breakfast in San Pedro because we have found our happy place! The stuffed French Toast is incredible as well as the San Pedro Burger. But beyond the food, the service is where Rex's shines. I have been here when it's slow and when it's busy and I am always greeted with the same level of kindness and professionalism. The staff really goes above and beyond to provide the best experience. Emma was our server this most recent time and just how amazing she was is the reason I'm writing this review. But really everyone is great and if you come here you won't be disappointed. read more

Hands down one of the best breakfasts I've had since I moved to Cali a year ago. Not only was the food delish but the staff moves effectively and efficiently. We had to wait but not too long. Our server was a sweetheart. She felt bad for not foaming up my cappuccino b/c I requested soy milk & it's hard to foam up so she didn't include it on the bill which was totally unnecessary. Everything was delicious. The fruit was fresh cut that morning, the scrabler I had was feta, tomato and basil. I inhaled it. It was that good. They make fresh muffins - I had a banana one and the pancakes my husband ordered were as big as the plate they were delivered on. The only bad part... we don't live closer to this place!! We live in Santa Monica where every "good" breakfast cafe is over priced and not nearly as good as Rex's. :( But that won't deter us from going back to Rex's. This was our 2nd time back since we stayed at Fort MacArthur AFB. It was just as good as we remembered over a year ago. Friendly and quick service, warming family atmosphere and tasty food. Found this place while perusing Yelp one of these days and thought it would be a good change from the usual IHOP or Mimi's breakfast that I get every weekend and it turned out to be just as the many reviews suggested. Parking: A little problematic as there is only street parking, though free, is quite limited. Moreover, the surrounding area looks a little sketchy so I wouldn't want to park particularly far away either, though it seems fine in the mornings at least. Seating: Place gets packed on Sunday mornings with a wait for a seat indoors to be around 15 minutes as it is a small shop with limited seating. Luckily there are three tables for two people outdoors so we were seated immediately. The problems with the outdoor seating was that it was a little cramped length-wise, meaning that while three tables fit, it was a very tight fit so don't expect to be leaning your chair back. Another gripe, and this isn't the shop's fault, but there a lot of police and ambulances driving past that area in the morning thus making it quite loud. Also, it was a little chilly out there in morning and their plants tend to attract a few bugs. Not a deal killer if you are looking to save time, but otherwise I would recommend sitting inside. Food: First off a warning, their portions are huge. Easily enough for two people to share one entrée, but since it was my first time I got greedy and ordered two entrees for the two of us (lucky my dad can eat lol). He got the Stuffed French Toast which was delicious and done right with its strawberry toppings and banana cream filling - definitely something I would recommend trying out; while I got the normal pancake breakfast with one egg and one sausage. The pancake was seriously the size of the plate, easily the equivalent of two or three at IHOP, and I was only able to finish half of it. It was fluffy, slightly crispy, and warm - yum. Other than that there sausage and egg that came with it was just that, nothing special worth noting. Service: Easily above par. Never once was our coffee empty as the waitress constantly came out with a smile to check on us to see if we needed anything else. I also have to give them some extra stars...The omelette I ordered was all veggies. After one bite, I noticed some suspicious looking turkey sausage in my dish! Luckily I didn't get any on my fork. I don't consider myself some holier-than-thou vegetarian, but the idea of eating meat grosses me out! I got the attention of a server and explained what was wrong. She was so gracious about it, and immediately told me that the kitchen would make me a new omelette. My server came out within a few minutes, apologizing profusely. My new omelette came out in minutes, and when the bill was brought, they didn't charge me for my meal. I think that's great costumer service! I will definitely go back! read more

Such a great place for breakfast, lunch or brunch! The outside facade in itself is inviting with beautiful flower boxes. The Cafe has some outside seating, as well as indoor seating. They have a chalkboard with specials, so definitely check that out. Personally, the day that I went I got the Mexican Omelette plate. It has street parking and that was easily found on a late Monday morning The Place has a nice warm feel about it. The host/servers were really nice. The menu looks amazing! Meaning, note to self: I need to come back and investigate more of the dishes on this menu. They offer some great healthy options/alternatives that read delicious. The choices made on this day were a Breakfast Burrito: flour tortilla filled with black bean chili, two scrambled eggs, jack and cheddar cheese. topped with tomato, avocado & a dollop of sour cream including a side of re-fried beans with a side of potatoes.The coffee was good. My girlfriend was in Burger mode/mood and she had the California Burger with fries. After waiting for a bit, my girl's burger came out and looked good. I was told that my plate was coming out soon. Great! An invitation to start on my girlfriend's fries!! They were good! ( Loss of points on not offering ketchup at the drop off time of the burger.) However, soon became a while before I got my plate. In frustration--only because watching my girlfriend eating when I'm hungry is not that much fun, and I was on a schedule--I voiced my concern. Our server and host made sure they were on top of it all after that point. They were very sweet and took good care of us. The food was very tasty and well prepared I must say. Great Breakfast place! TIP: Order one for two. Tell the server that you'll be splitting the meal. They are very generous with their portions and they split it on separate plates. It really looks like two separate orders. Their country potatoes are kind of.....bah. They could really use more time in the oven for a crisp/browning effect and more seasoning. The fruit side is great, their produce seems to be hand selected. Also - Why can't we find any breakfast place in SP/LBC that serves chicken apple sausage? Turkey patties are kind of....gross? My only real complaint about Rex's is that they charge extra for egg whites and real maple syrup. IMO, if you're a breakfast place that is known for being a healthy alternative, don't charge extra for basic healthy ingredients . Actually - don't even have unhealthy ingredients.
