We ordered the Mexican coffee and the French toast with eggs and bacon combo. It was enough for two to split if you're not super hungry. Very tasty!! We stopped by Rex's Cafe for brunch after a stand up paddleboarding session in the marina. The cafe was recommended by our instructor, and it did not disappoint! After a short wait, we were seated inside. The restaurant is a little small (tables are close together) but has a homey feel and was bustling with locals. It might be tough to get a large group in here, but we lucked out because we were only rolling 4 deep. All the Yelp reviews rave about their homemade muffins, so of course we had to try one while we were here. My husband and I split the orange muffin and it was delicious! For our entrees, we both went with chilaquiles - he got the green sauce and I went with red. Now chilaquiles are one of my TOP FAVORITE breakfast foods, so my standards are high! I live for the red tomato sauce and it can be hard to get the flavoring right. Let's just say, Rex's Cafe reset my bar. Not only was the sauce delicious, but the chips were thick and crispy, even when bathed in sauce! Service wise, the servers were friendly and efficient. They checked on us frequently for coffee and water refills. No complaints here, and looking forward to returning the next time we are in the neighborhood! New favorite breakfast/brunch spot for the weekend. This is about as local as it gets. You feel like you're in someone's house and the staff is overly accommodating. Specials are scribbled all over a giant blackboard and the menu has just about every salad/breakfast/sandwich combination you can think of. My biggest surprise was ordering the peppermint mocha latte. I was expecting something gross and overly sweet. I received a cup larger then my head full of amazingness. It was better then starbucks in my opinion. I also tried the special of the day, a pineapple sesame stir-fry with shrimp. While I thought I probably could have made the same thing at home, it was so healthy and didn't weigh my down the rest of the day. My fellow diners had the stuffed french toast, which was also relatively light compared to other places. If you're eating healthy and still want to enjoy brunch, this is the place to go. read more

Size does matter. Disclaimer: I have a HUGE appetite. STUFFED TOAST is not bad, the banana in between the two breads makes for a tasty filling. Now with that said there is two slices of wheat bread, NOT the FLUFFY TOAST. The breads are battered in flour & egg, but at the end of the day they are not your traditional french toast. They do taste like something out of my mom's kitchen & that is a good thing. Size is said to be large, just image three half slices of bread. Yeah I'm glad this fat girl had a plan. TURKEY MELT is 2 halves of regular sized bread. Turkey, avocado & melted cheese, you can never go wrong with that combo. It did come with a soup/salad. TORTILLA SOUP tasted like a good vegetable soup with little tortilla chips on top & a side of half bagel toasted with butter that is tasty on it's own. BREAKFAST QUESADILLA was really good, filling, and an awesome portion for this fat girl! Vanilla Latte $3.95/cup it is ok. I rather buy a cup of coffee at Starbucks though, I should of tried one of their fresh fruit breakfast smoothies for exactly $1 more. Service is good. Parking can be challenging. Absolutely love this place. The staff is super friendly, they have a great menu, and they serve really hearty portions. My favorite thing to get here is the Mexican omelette. This is a tough review for me, especially because I quite liked the food and service. Aside from a few issues, keep reading, my experience was really good. We went after church on a Sunday, and we got there around 9:45, and had a 15 minute wait. The wait was expected, someone even came out and check if we wanted coffee - nice touch. What was less than ideal, was that I was approached by homeless people TWICE asking for spare change, and I obliged, but never a situation I enjoying having my young children experience. However, after church, it was a practical lesson in humanity, although I'd rather shelter my kids as long as possible. Another challenge can be parking, the area requires that you park on the street, which can be kinda crazy, with one side of the car opening into oncoming car and bike traffic. I also had the unlucky pleasure of parking under a power line which was filled with pigeons, you can guess how that ended - LOL. The restaurant itself has character and charm, although it's small. The menu rocks, many unique variations on classic Sunday breakfast items. I enjoyed the breakfast burrito, which is a 'go to' item for me, and they did not disappoint. It was plenty big and took hash browns, bacon, and fresh salsa and rolled them into an egg shell, covered by a big tortilla. The burrito also came with a side dish, and I choose the fruit, which was a good variety of really fresh fruit. The family ordered a side of bacon, cooked well done (by request), we got 4 tasty strips of wide style swine cooked to perfection. My wife had some house version of French Toast, which was a sugar filled delight, including strawberries and whipped cream. My girls had the pancakes off the kids menu (huge!) and the French toast (moderate size). Nobody had any food complaints, seemed like A's all around. The service was good, with the exception of my forgotten muffin, which I was sent home with at no charge - again, nice touch. Rex's Cafe has great food, with good service and a family friendly ambiance (inside), but the setting (outside) was not ideal for kids, or parking. We came late on a Monday morning so there was no line and service was super speedy and did I mention with a smile? Well it was with a smile too! I had the open faced Mediterranean omelette done with egg whites. It was really good with TONS of toppings. There were more toppings than egg. Portions are HUGE and it comes with toast and your choice of potatoes or fruit. Can you believe that? I opted for the fruit and the bowl was huge! The fruit was fresh and ripe. I could've eaten just that on its own. Thats no fun now is it? Of course not! So...I added bacon :) Delicious! My +1 had the stuffed squaw bread french toast which was delicious too. Hot lemon muffin right out of the oven? yummm! The coffee is pretty good too. My Mexican omelette came quickly and looked fresh and appetizing. It was a little on the bland side though, could've used some more salt and spices. Not a big fan of the hash browns either. I ordered them well done, but they came with a super greasy/oily yellow-golden outside and a watery potato mass on the inside. I personally think it's too thick and definitely not well done. The wait staff is attentive and friendly, my waitress asked me if I liked everything and when I told her about the hash browns she offered me another order or a cup of fruit. Everytime we come this people are always soooo nice to us , we feel like we are at home , they already know our drink order and what we wanna eat , food its always so good and their special coffees are the bomb !!!! This is a GREAT little restaurant, perhaps really a "cafe" and one of my favorite places for fud in Pedro. It is super fresh and healthy too. You can really taste the love in every very well-prepared plate. I only wish they were open past 2pm because I'd love to have dinner there many times a week, but it's just not possible. It's also got a nice ambiance too, although not the most comfy chairs. If it wasn't on a busy-ish street, the patio could be even cozier. There's neat artsy stuff on the walls, and I've even purchased handprinted cards there from the local art scene. It's a sweet and yummy little place that is part of the allure of San Pedro. read more

Since my visit was on a week day, the street parking was not bad, parking only a block away. The interior was nicely decorated, clean and greeted with smiles. You know, they've got great food. I've only gone a few times but their food has been consistent in quality. But each time I've gone, I have not been satisfied with their customer service and if customer service is bad, why should I come back for the food? That food would have to be god like for me to come back after bad customer service. Most recently I went to breakfast with my boyfriend and pleasant customer service was definitely lacking. Our waitress was very disconnected and off put. She seemed very unfriendly too. After we ordered our food and it was brought to us we noticed she had failed to bring us our sides, which by the way were just bagels. So after waiting 15 minutes for her to come by so we can ask for our bagels, we asked different waiter if he could bring our bagels but then he dissapeared. Our waitress finally walked by again and we asked for our bagels and after showing obvious signs of annoyance she plainly said they'll be out soon. After our breakfast I asked curiously if my boyfriend's breakfast was suppose to come with bacon on the side or was it suppose to be in the scramble and she said, with poorly hidden attitude might I add, "They were in the scramble. So I added hash browns (cooked in canola oil not butter) nixed the refried beans (they have lard) but added their vegetarian chili, avocado, tomatoes and soyrizo. While staying in San Pedro for a few days this week, I happened upon Rex's due to great reviews on Yelp & realizing it was right down the street from our apartment. Walked in on Wednesday morning and the bf ordered a breakfast quesadilla, which comes with avocado, sour cream on top, hash browns on the side & it's filled with egg, tomato, onions, bacon, cheese. This was phenomenal! I've never had something like this, seeing as how I'm from Jersey and the closest thing to this is a breakfast sandwich (which doesn't even compare to how delicious this was!!). I had a breakfast burrito that morning, which was bacon, eggs, cheese with beans & sour cream on the side, and I got a side of home fries/potatoes. I loved everything that was put in front of me....the only thing I found bland were the potatoes. =/ but I won't let that detract from the reviews because the hash browns were great, as was our coffee, our smoothies afterwards, and our service. A++ We loved this place so much, we went back the following morning before our flight back home. I'll miss this place! read more

I had brunch here over the weekend with the inlaws again. They seem to be partial to San Pedro for some reason. Rex's is a cute little bistro type restaurant with great food and a lively staff. Our coffee, water and iced teas were perpetually being refilled. Try the california omelette with fresh homemade salsa; absolutely delicious. Their fresh fruit looked very good. Sorry San Pedro, I've read all the reviews and know you guys love this place but I went down there for brunch this past Memorial Day Weekend and really wished I would have just gone to the new Denny's up the road, I had the San Pedro Burger and my girl had the Garden Omelet. The burger was drenched in Mayo and Mustard. To the point that it was almost nauseating to eat. The dressings taste were overwhelming which is normally a bad thing but the meat patty was so tasteless that it almost balanced it all out. The fries were nothing special either. The Garden omelet was very ordinary. Nothing stood out about it at all. The potatoes were cut pretty big and were the highlight to the meal. Once the bill came we were overjoyed to know that we were charged more then $7 for 3 cans of coke and an iced tea. Not too long after we left the cafe we were both feeling as if we just spent 12 rounds with Mike Tyson who was punching us in the gut over and over and over. This didn't go well from the start. 2Nd time here , we are visiting my mom from Las Vegas. I ordered a soda water which came in the form of a Perrier. I cut my hand on the bottle opening it .. (Part of the metel was sticking out ). Not their fault , but set things in motion. Since I am vegan not much I can order , so I order a tomateo and avacado sandwhich with mustard and potateos. The sanwhich was SO DRENCHED in mustard , I had to take my napkin and pat it off. The potateos were cold , like they had been sitting on the grill to long. I usually will make a complaint to the server , instead of hehind my computer , but the 2 girls were really busy .. (The restaurant was packed ) And being an ex server I know how caotic that can be. My husband ordered Chilituilis .. He said that was good , but the hash brown were burnt. My daughter said yhe snooze hie was good. My favorite part of running and working out is getting to eat afterwards and when we run with our club on Saturdays, every once in a while we go out for a good breakfast. Well, this particular day, we decided to hit Rex's Cafe since our run was at Pt. Fermin down the street. What a good reward this was. We had a party of 10 so the wait was a little long since this place is really quaint (small in other words), but they accommodated us relatively quick compared to other small joints in the area. We sat down and were quickly attended to. To tell you the truth, how can you not notice and attend to a group of 10 runners who just ran for over an hour. They probably wanted us out of there asap so we stop steaming up the windows. Just kidding because they were really nice. I'm very aroma oriented when it comes to my senses and i like to take a whiff of almost everything (good smells only please). The first thing I smelled happened to be a hint of some type of bakery goods. I looked around and saw huge muffins being served around the restaurant. Thankfully, someone at our table had ordered one and they turned out to be homemade muffins made every day and thankfully, they offered us a piece. What a great start. Warm, crispy edges, and moist in the middle as steam escaped from the piece I tore off. Yum. I needed some caffeine so I got myself a Cappuccino. I had also espied a espresso machine in the corner as I walked in and the definite aroma of roasted beans whet my cravings. When I got it, it was like one of those masterpieces that you see in those nationwide Barista competitions on TV. Nice little cup, good color on the java, and a foam milk heart in the middle of it all. Not a drip or drop off in design or mess. Tasty as hell. Eggs Benny. Eggs Benny. Eggs Benny. Remember that because that is one of the best egg dishes that I have ever had. Bold statement since I love eggs. Not overly complicated but absolutely tasty. The turkey sausage was cooked perfectly and the slight grilling of the muffin made that texture combination perfect. I'm not a huge fan of Hollandaise so it was nice that this one had cheese instead. What was great was the complete presentation of this dish. Each muffin was topped perfectly with the sausage and poached egg in the middle and the cheese was perfectly molded over everything to the point that it looked like a perfect dome. The color of the cheese made it look like there was hollandaise sauce poured all over it but to my surprise, it was just cheese. Presentation is everything it would seem, even with breakfast. Delicious. I really like this place and you really don't feel terrible after you eat here. There are healthy options and even the less healthy options aren't over the top. It's quaint but popular so that leads to long waits. They try to squeeze as many tables as they can in there so it's really tight walking around. The staff is friendly and the food is good. We enjoyed our time dining here on an early Saturday morning. The cafe is small and intimate. You'll feel like you're enjoying a nice quiet breakfast in a Spanish veranda. But unfortunately, the view consists of a run down cleaners, a $0.98 only store, and a sports bar. So in effect, Rex's is an oasis from the dilapidated realities of the neighborhood. The food at Rex consists of your typical breakfast items and a few specialties. We ate scrambled eggs, bacon (turkey is an excellent choice), home fries (very thick and I would recommend that they be cooked extra crispy), coffee, etc. The blueberry muffin was my favorite. Hot right out of the oven. The coffee here is one of their treats, freshly brewed and not watery at all. There is a separate counter where you can purchase bakery goods and coffee if you're on the go. Definitely convenient. I could observe from my one experience here that many of the locals love to dine here. It seemed as though people would walk in, and they would be instantly recognized. There is almost a kinship amongst the upper middle class clientele. This is in stark contrast to the Omelet and Waffle Shop, Pacific Diner, and Gaffey Street Diner, where you get a more blue collar, longshoreman feel to the atmosphere. read more

A friend & I had a late breakfast here today; we decided to try someplace new (for me) instead of our usual downtown SP eatery, and I was pleasantly surprised. This is a cozy hole-in-the-wall with a big and delicious healthy menu! Not big on the fried crap, just serious, wholesome, home-cooked food. The service was fantastic - they were attentive without being in-your-face. I ordered a Cafe Latte, which was gigantic, and no way I could finish- and the Breakfast Wrap, which had eggs, spinach, mushrooms, bacon (maybe more) in a spinach wrap - it was huge and so, so good. I ordered it with fresh fruit, which I expected to be 2 slices of orange and some cut up strawberries, but no, it was a large bowl of cut fresh fruit. I'm dying to go back. read more

go here. they offer freaking bagels as a toast choice, and the fruit salad has more than just melons and grapes! i know it's weird for someone to point out those things, but think of what else it says about the place. if they actually put bananas, strawberries, kiwi, and citrus fruits in the fruit salad, they actually must give a damn about their produce. same goes for the bagel thing. bagels go stale in a day, so they must either be baking them there, or getting them from a local place daily. awesome. i've only been once, can't figure why. the service was fast, the food was fantastic, the prices were very reasonable, and the... oh. that was it. the parking sucked. ok. if you can park, you'll adore this place. so ride your mopeds or something and get the heck over there! read more
