Our first time there and the food was great, our waiter Bryant was on top of my crazy water intake (I'm pregnant), the full rack of ribs was huge and my French onion soup had a ton of flavor! Out of town so wanted to try something new. Came in after dinner rush, so it was pretty empty. Sat at the bar and the bartender, didnt catch his name, was very friendly, and kept checkin In. I considered not writing this review, and the 1 Star really just goes to the terrible experience I had today with one employee, but I really would like their management to see this. I came here with my family today for brunch at around 12:30. We'd been here multiple times before, and had a good experience every other time. When we walked in there was another patron at the hostess station, and so my husband, myself, and our two kids stepped into the foyer away from the door so the next people to come in would have room to stand. When the person who had been in front of the hostess station walked away the hostess completely ignored my family and directed herself to the people standing behind us. I made eye contact with the hostess and said 'four please' she rolled her eyes at me, and I heard the family behind me say 'oh I didn't know they were waiting' The hostess then went to look for a table and said 'I don't know if we have anything' walked all the way around past the booths and then pointed to a table of four chairs and a table near the door. I said fine. She then went directly to the family behind us, who came in after us, got them menus, and walked them over to a booth, this was AFTER she told me she didn't know if she had anything. So not only did she ignore my family the first time, she actually sat the family behind us first and at a booth. At this point I got upset and I said to another hostess (who was very nice btw) 'we were waiting first, why did that family get seated first and a better table' she then went and found another booth for us in that same row (again let me reiterate that the original hostess wanted to seat us at a smaller table in front of the door and told me they didn't have any booths ) when we were on our way to the table with the second hostess because the first refused to acknowledge us, I made eye contact with the hostess and she GLARED at me with a smirk for a good few seconds, as if was the one who was rude. Excuse me? At this point I said to my husband, I don't want to eat here, please let's go somewhere else. Not only was her customer service completely unprofessional, it made me not want to stay at all. I actually felt uncomfortable! I did nothing to be treated like that! I feel really badly that this happened and it upset my whole day. I eat out quite often and never have bad experiences like this. I also worked in food service for quite a few years and the correct way to address a group of people in front of a hostess station is, 'we'll be with you all in just a minute, who was waiting first' it's also helpful to smile and be kind, because you know, it's CUSTOMER SERVICE. My wife and I had dinner here last Friday night about 7:00 pm. It was a short 15 minute wait to get a table but the bar had open seats. We opted to wait for the table. I started with a delicious local IPA and my wife had a mango tea. She later got a watermelon mojito and it was delicious too. We started with the calamari and fried zucchini appetizer. The calamari were excellent and perfect with the spicy arrabiata sauce. They piled on the calamari but my wife wanted the appetizer for the zucchini sticks, that is why we got it, something for both of us. They only included three short zucchini sticks not much bigger than a matchstick carrot. Not the combo we expected. We opted for a couple of more appetizers and french onion soup for our dinner instead of going for the entrees. We had nachos with ground beef and chicken and buffalo wings.The french onion soup was delicious at first but as we got toward the bottom the broth was overly salty. The nachos were good and the combination of the chicken and ground beef was really good. The buffalo wings were not good at all. They tasted like they may have been freezer burned and/or cooked in old oil. They were very dry without much sauce at all. The calamari and the nachos reheated well in the toaster oven the next day. The wings did not get reheated because they were not good and we pulled meat off the bone and gave it to our dogs. Service was a little inattentive. They did not bring ranch dip for the matchstick zucchini sticks and we could not get his attention to return. Thankfully a runner asked if we needed anything and was happy to oblige. The price points for food and drinks are pretty high for the quality of food that we got and the atmosphere and service do not rank high enough to match the price point. Having said that, we would return for the happy hour specials from 3-7. They had plenty of options to choose from for food and drinks on their happy hour menu. Overall, just an ok experience. Unless it is for happy hour, I doubt we will return. read more

I would give them 3.5 to 4 stars. Food was pretty good. Service was good too, nothing exceptional. We were seated right away and our drinks came pretty quickly. Not a lot of craft beers here but they have enough to get you by. Not a huge wine list, but the Cab Sauv I had was pretty good. I ordered the Acapulco Steak salad. Steak was cooked just the way I asked and was tender, good flavor, not too much fat. The greens were crisp and not wily, and the dressing was not over bearing. My husband ordered the half rack of ribs with sweet potato fries and brocolli. He said they were pretty good. Came off the bone pretty easily and not too much fat. He said he really liked the sauce. My dad had the bacon wrapped meatloaf. He enjoyed it. He said it wasn't too dry and had good flavor. The sauce wasn't spectacular but it was good. It came on top of a square of breaded mashed potatoes and had sauteed spinach on top. Overall we enjoyed our meal. This was my first time having their food. I came once before for drinks and the place definitely takes on more of a bar atmosphere later in the evening. TVs all over if you like sports. read more

So my wife, son, and I checked out this new spot in Gainesville, VA tonight. Place was hopping, but our timing was good, only about a 10 minute wait. Once seated, in comfortable chairs at a nicely sized 4-top, our server Adam S came over and welcomed us to "Rockwell Day 4." After taking our drink order, he mentioned that the kitchen was a bit behind, just so we knew. This was a pro-move and we welcomed this honesty and heads-up (which in our opinion proved unnecessary as the courses were perfectly timed - not right on top of each other). He also explained that, as their first Friday, the menu was limited (no sandwich menu) but we were hitting the apps and burgers anyway. Our drinks (a local IPA and Peach Berry-Tini) and some waters came out quickly (within 5 mins) and our apps quickly behind (maybe 8-10 mins). We had the empanadas, home-made pigs-in-a-blanket, and bacon-chicken-fritters. All were well prepared and very tasty. Adam S and the rest of the waitstaff were visibly, very attentive to the patrons, with water glasses refilled before hitting 1/4, and frequent checks on their tables. Our burgers, a Classic (cheese, lett, tomato, pickle), Morning After (cheese, bacon, fried egg, fried onions), and a Rock the Stack (cheese, bacon, onion ring, tomato, lett, and special mayo) came out with some thick chip style fries. The burgers were cooked perfectly to order, were juicy, with stout sesame seed buns that withstood the ingredients. I followed my local IPA with the Rockwell Fashioned (copy of drink menu with the ingredients and a photo are uploaded) - a drink tastefully done with whiskey and bacon, with some maple - very tasty!!! Though we weren't planning on it, my wife and I split a dessert, three deep fried Reese's cups with ice cream....yes...I said deep fried Reece's cups (there is also the option for deep fried Oreos). My son got the Red Velvet milkshake. If you just watched an episode of Carnival Eats on Cooking Channel and are now jonesing in the Gainesville area, well they can hook you up. For a new restaurant, of the sports bar type, privately owned (not a chain), on their first Friday, in the DC area, with the Caps in the Stanly Cup playoffs and on TV, to have all this going on, and to perform to this level of attention, service, and quality....yes, we'll be back for sure. Our first visit was on a weekend for lunch, second was a weeknight for dinner and had a very consistent experience both times. Though neither visit was crowded, we appreciated the friendly, attentive service. I like that there's a staff of food runners that almost hover over the pass waiting for the next order tom come up - as a result, all our food arrived hot and fresh. For lunch we shared the taco trio as an app - the carne asada was kinda bland, the chicken decent enough, my favorite of the three was the ahi tuna. We also shared the cuban. Two bites in and I said to my wife "I'm calling it right now. This is my go-to sandwich." It wasn't the best cuban I ever had, but it was near the top. For dinner, I again ordered the cuban and it was every bit as good. Kudos to the kitchen staff for consistency. My wife ordered the classic cheeseburger. Again, nothing earth shattering, but certainly a decent burger and worth the price. And I love the twister fries that came with both meals. We watched as other plates were delivered and everything looked appetizing. I especially liked the platter of nachos the table next to us ordered. Rather than the mound of chips with blobs of toppings yo get at most places, this was a wide, flat platter with toppings evenly spread across the whole thing, so you get toppings with every bite. The menu isn't extensive, but that's fine if they continue to be consistent with what's there. I wouldn't mind seeing a few specialty cocktails, or a wider range of beer offerings, but maybe that'll come with time. If you're expecting a fine dining experience, don't get your hopes up - this is a sports bar, after all. But if you're looking for a fun, relaxed place to have a decent meal that's not a chain restaurant, add Rockwood to your list. read more

my first and last time coming to Rockwood they didn't put my order in till everyone's came out.the fajitas didn't have much flavor I got the combo with steak and chicken.We had to ask a worker to clean the table saying that they already cleaned with spilled coke on it. Good thing my mother keeps wipes in her purse. Very overpriced never again. The worker passed by us even looked at us and still didn't come to our attention.then 20 mins later she came. I've been back several times now and must say that the food has been impeccable each time. The empanada app is killer and a reason to go. I've had a few of their sandwiches and this last visit I tried the turkey club wrap. Shockingly good for a turkey wrap. My husband and I happened upon Rockwood when the restaurant we were headed to had rescue vehicles outside. It was so good, we went back the next night! What was great: We were seated outside (our choice during Covid19) in a cute little area with umbrella-ed tables and faux grass. We got there during Happy Hour (3-7) and were given an appetizer menu and the dinner menu. The apps looked great and were priced right, so we decided to make them a meal. Their "crazy corn" was delicious, spicy, salty and sweet. The "Gringo taco" was fresh, the flavor of the ground beef was excellent. The nachos were great and had lots of toppings all the way through. The best was their Key Lime Pie. It tasted so homemade, that we asked the server about it. She told us it was ordered from Florida! Our server was super sweet and helpful if not a bit new, but she asked the answers to our questions and cheerfully reported back. What could have been better: We had to use the main entrance and walk through the whole restaurant in order to get to the outside seating, despite the fact that there is a direct route to that area from the parking lot. After we were seated, another customer came up to the patio entrance and was told he had to go through the restaurant. He said, "I'm not going to do that." The staff seated him from outside. I just think they should have that option to begin with. There are always waitstaff coming outside so they wouldn't need a dedicated outdoor host. read more
