Relying on Yelp in Holbrook is risky business because the reviews are so often written by I-40 transients, hailing from Iowa or New Jersey or some such place where there is little (no) basis for what constitutes very good Mexican food. I offer my opinion as a decades long resident of the Southwest and someone who has tried most of the restaurants in Holbrook. Romo's is the real deal. To be more specific, what you want ... rather, what you need ... is the shredded beef chimichanga topped with red and green chili sauce. If you don't like fried (aka a chimi), just ask, and they will make a burro for you the same way. The salsa has great flavor too. read more

This was the worst restaurant experience of my life. I ordered two things: a beer and a burrito. I did not receive either and the waiter even tried to charge me for the wrong meal that he brought. You might think that, while I'm waiting about 45 minutes to receive the wrong meal and a beer, I'd at least get my water refilled. Nope. Even though the waitress stopped by the next table to refill their waters and our waiter looked over to see our empty water glasses sitting on the edge of the table, no refills for us. When I got the wrong food, I told the waiter about the problem and at first he seemed nice. He apologized and told me he'll get my burrito out quick. What would you expect a good restaurant to do in this situation? Put a rush on it and make it the next order out of the kitchen. About another 45 minutes passed when the waiter returned to our table -- the first time after bringing the wrong meal -- and he asked if I still want the burrito. Still no water this entire time. Still no beer. Obviously, I declined. I feel a little bad saying this because the waiter was young and this is a small business, but this place was awful. I'd never recommend this to a friend. The food that I ate off my friend's plate was OK, no match for Joe & Aggie's right across the street. (Another small business that actually deserves your support.) read more

We stopped here on a recent cross-country drive and really enjoyed the food. This place is on the old Hwy 66 and the neighborhood is a little tired, but the food is great. Best part is with each dinner order you get a sopapilla, which is a fried pastry served with honey. The best. read more

This place looks like a hole in the wall and I have driven past it many times. We were hungry and decided to stop. It is not a fancy place, but it is clean. When the chip and salsa were brought to our table I was instantly impressed. The salsa looked home made and it was. I don't know if I have had a better salsa at a restaurant before. With salsa this good I knew the dinner would be excellent. I was right. I had a taco and enchilada combo plate. Their use of spices was impressive. This is one of our local favorites. The food is great....some of our faves are the shredded beef chimichanga, the taco dinner and the cheese enchiladas. The biggest question you will have is red or green chile, both are spicy but have different flavor, usually I perfer green but here they are both delicious. If you aren't sure which you would enjoy they will do half and half. Another star for me is the rice...it's a tomato based rice that is softer than most but a local fave. This is literally the best green chili I have ever had in my entire life. There's also the best chili Riano I have ever had in my entire life. The service is excellent and the grandson spent time telling us about his entire family history with this restaurant. Definitely a diamond in the rough. Staying in town for work and my friend and I were looking for some good food when we saw this place on yelp so we stopped in and we are so glad we did the food was amazing and the beer was ice cold. Let's say, the chips are good! Had high hopes for Romo's due to the reviews, but when our waiter came to us, that was 14 yrs old, we knew it would be interesting. He didn't know (obviously) what beer I was talking about when ordering. When the food came out, mine was 'ok' at best, and my buddy that frequents Mexican restaurants, took one bite and pushed it aside. In the mean time, I order another beer and he brings out the wrong one. 5 mins later the few years older guy came to ask me 'which beer did you order again?' Hmm...where to begin on Romo's? Well, we tried to go across the street to Joe and Aggie's, but it was closed. (No explanation, no sign, normal business hours...very odd.) So I'm guessing that Romo's was a bit overrun because Joe and Aggie's was closed. So I can understand if you're a bit chaotic during a lunch rush. However, despite the young man who worked there offering us a glass of water while we waited for a table, I can't say much positive about the experience. We waited about 15-20 minutes for a table while several tables sat around, clearly done with their meals, and having paid their checks. As we waited, we were joined by a pregnant woman and her two kids, as well as another couple, then a pair of men. The restaurant seemed to have sacrificed an 8-top for a party that was coming in, which to me, seemed like a poor choice. (Romo's clearly does not seem like a "make a reservation" place, and when you're that swamped, you should really tend to the customers waiting in your doorway.) Once we were seated, we ordered a burrito, a grilled cheese, and an order of fries. After a long wait (about 30-40 minutes), my burrito arrived, and my friend's fries. However, no grilled cheese. Instead, we got a "cheese melt" or something, a giant tostada slathered with a pool of greasy melted cheese. Apparently, the waitress got the order wrong. After the waitress went back to correct the order, we waited another 15 minutes. I finished my burrito, and after the counter woman saw me looking at her, she came over to ask if we were okay. We then found out the sandwich was never re-ordered and was not in the process of being cooked. We got our check and left--with no apology from the waitress. Cheese crisp is fried, not baked tortilla, but generous in size and amount of cheese. I ordered the special which came with taco meat on the top. The cheese enchilada with red sauce with a side of beans and rice can be had for 5.25 on Tuesdays and is a great deal, it's a properly made enchilada. Wednesdays, tacos are only a $1 and a steal for that price, unfortunately half the town shows up during lunch time. The chicken taco was filled with properly cooked, tender chicken. I'd say the red chili here is better than the green chili. The burgers are hand-pattied, always a plus. The only down sides I noticed to this place is the $4.25 side of guacamole, the waiters are often very slow, and the 75 cent surcharge with every card purchase. One of the better restaurants in Holbrook, a great choice for lunch and they have a refreshing selection of alcoholic drinks to accompany the meal. read more

Used to live in so cal so we had great Mexican all over. Moved to Phoenix area and for 3 years tried probality 50 different Mexican places and all crap. Stopped here on the recommendation from a local. Very pleased with the meal. I ordered the chimichanga and although it was good I liked my wife's dish of Nachos Special much better. Great food and service for a diner. We travelled all day and stopped there for an evening meal. Fun decor, the staff greeted us warmly and the food was served timely. Generous portions were served and we were given an option to take the rest back to our room with us. Being that this was Mexicam fare, everything was spiced well and tasty. The only thing that took away from the dining experience was a the listing of all the additional charges. I applaud their transparency I sharing them, but being told on multiple places that costs are increasing and 'these are the things we need to charge you for because of that' are a little annoying. I enjoy a good chile relleno. Here at Romo's I learned I'd only ever made it to "good" up 'til today. Turns out I LOVE great chile rellenos. The chile's they used were, plump, fresh and freshly roasted and peeled. The batter was light and tasty, and enjoyable even through some fantastic, smoky, red chili. (I couldn't decide so I got half red and half green chili. Turns out I prefer their red - just me though, the green was great too) My only complaints were 1) the food was lava-hot. Actually that was good... I was able to savor the food instead of just gobbling it down. 2) I will now need to return to Holbrook just to enjoy this masterpiece of a chile relleno, and every other one in my rainy corner of the world shall not measure up. Our local favorite place to eat. Service most of time is great. Can be a little slow at times. Dont come when your in a rush. But hey who wants to rush when you want to wind down. The food is great. Your standard Mexican. They make everything fresh. No frozen hamburger patties here. The chimi is the bomb. We eat here at least once a week. read more

Service is extremely lousy. Consider waiting here for quite awhile to get acknowledged and order taken, consider waiting even longer for your food to arrive. We received our menu and a small bowl of chips, which weren't fresh, could've been another customer's leftover. We sat for 15 more minutes waiting for our order to be taken, and not 1 server came by, except the person cleaning off tables who said she only cleans tables off. The restaurant was busy and packed with people. I commented to the server that we were leaving and they portrayed poor customer service, she gave a snide remark about being slow and to tell her sister (the owner)! Advice to this restaurant: If you anticipate a lot of people coming in, double or triple up on Servers, and people in the kitchen! May this be a reminder that your business comes from the customers! We traveled to dine in. A customer that we were seated next to was playing her music. The waitress rudely told her to shut it off and went to turn on their TV that was not on when we got there. I ordered and asked if they could double up on the Spanish rice and in place of the beans. I was told by the waitress "She normally don't do substitutes". I don't know who she was referring to when she said "she". So, I asked for the rice only. When my plate came, there was beans on there. We asked about a meal on the menu and the waitress's response was "I don't know, I am new". Our dining experience differed from the other times we ate here. When I originally ordered everything was fine but about an hour after waiting our inexperienced server came to tell me that shredded beef was no longer available. AFTER AN HOUR!!!!! Told by Econo Lodge that this was the best in town...what?!?! If this is the best Holbrook has to offer...I feel sorry for Holbrook! We ordered the nachos, chicken enchilada dinner, and cheese enchilada dinner. Yuck, yuck, more yuck. The enchiladas were smothered in sauce, no flavor to the meal. The saving grace was the taco...an Old El Paso corn tortilla stuffed with meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. It was decent. (Should have warmed it so the shell wouldn't crumble.) The nachos? Would you like some nachos with your beans? Served in a bowl, and all you can taste is beans. There was something resembling guac and sour cream on top. Oh, we ordered a side of sour cream. It's $1.25 for 2 of the pre-packaged small butter-like tubs. The service was decent, the only saving grace. read more
