Had a great dinner at Romo's Cafe, was recommended by the girl running the Wigwam hotel. Margaritas were excellent! The service was great, must be a family running the place, they worked very hard serving their customers. Chips and salsa were ok all a matter of taste, guacamole good. but the meals we had were excellent, came out hot! Soppapia excellent could have eaten four of them! The place was busy with locals. We were sitting in the back of the restaurant which was very dark, I didn't like that. There were a couple lamps that could have used more bulbs to brighten up the place. It's rather a dive, but we don't mind that as long as the food & service is good, which it was. Parking was good in the back of the building. We stayed in Holbrook, AZ for the experience to stay in the Wigwam. That was awesome. So we decided to go to Romo's Cafe per recommendation of the front desk. The food was good, however not one server or cook was wearing a mask; which was alarming because it clearly stated on the door mask mandatory upon entry. Also, one of the girls working there came over and asked what we would like to drink. I said what kind of beer do you have?, her reply... "I have no clue". Overall, strange experience. read more

This Mexican food cafe had been a favorite of ours for years... We have stopped frequenting the business largely due to poor customer service. Long wait times, inexperienced staff & the refusal by the owner to accommodate even simple requests such as having the rice from one order be placed on a separate dish so that another member of our party could enjoy it. We were informed that this was to difficult for the kitchen staff to accomplish and would confuse them. We found out that it is virtually impossible for the owner to get and keep good help and "training the crackheads how to assemble a meal was almost impossible". That from the owner. I informed her that I could completely understand why it was hard to get and keep good help if she was treating her help the same way the customers were treated. Many of the experienced waitstaff have moved and continue to move on to other local restaurants when the opportunity presents itself. Additionally the prices here have steadily climbed into the realm of unreasonable for what you get. It is by far the most expensive Mexican food in town now. In summary what is supposed to be a relaxing evening out for dinner invariably ends up as a stress inducer as you wait and continue to wait even for the initial greeting and menu delivery upon arrival... Be patient your waiting has just begun. read more

We would have given this place a 4.5 if that was an option! The food was authentic!! I only know this because my mom lived in El Paso for several years and learned to make good Mexican food while she was there. Brent's red sauce enchilada had the best enchilada taste that either of us had ever had! It's probably the combination of their cheese and sauce, but it is was to die for!! His beef taco was also full of beef; they didn't skimp. I ordered the green chili beef burrito, and it filled my plate!! It was a really good burrito!! My only complaint was that there wasn't anything in the burrito other than beef, so I ordered a side of retried beans to eat with the burrito. That made it perfect!! Yummy, yummy Mexican food!! Worst meal I've had in a long time. I don't eat red meat. They were out of chicken... Do my only option was a cheese enchiladas... But the green sauce has beef. Ugh. The plate came, and the beans were so hot, they scorched my tongue. Both if my boys food was bland. The rice was a red pile of mush. None of us ate it. My son wanted chicken in his bean burrito too.. hoped fir at least a sopapilla to redeem the bad meal... But alas, they were out of that too. Bad meal no matter how you look at it. $49 wasted. We stopped in for dinner tonight based on the recommendation from the manager at the Wigwam Motel. We were warmly welcomed and seated immediately. The restaurant isn't much to look at, but the food was pretty tasty. I enjoyed a 1/2 Navajo taco with ground beef and green chiles...so yummy and way too big even with the smaller portion. Disclaimer: I was there as part of a big group ( over 14), so small groups may have different experiences. Parking: easy, lot located on the side / back. Service: as good as could be expected for such a large group. Note that they missed two people's dishes, but those came out within a totally reasonable time once this was noted. Food: I can only comment in great detail on what I ate - the Navajo taco with beef. Fry bread was okay at best. Obviously slopping a large amount of any wet ingredients onto a fried item will cause it to get kind of soggy, but it was already kind of damp upon arrival and rather doughy by the end. The vegetables on it were fine; nothing to write home about, although the beans tasted particularly mediocre. Of the other people who I surveyed, the general consensus was that the food was okay but also nothing to write home about. The salsa they give you at the start is potent in terms of flavor, but it has a watery consistency that's not that conducive for chips so much as for pouring into a burrito or onto a taco. Chips were okay. A big sticking point for many people was that the margaritas had no salt rims! They didn't even ask if we wanted it, but my friend who went a few days before told me that they did give them the option. **Also, if you have a vertically-oriented driver's license, they will NOT accept it for ordering alcoholic drinks regardless of how old you are - probably the only time I've ever had to use an American passport to order a drink in my own country...** TLDR: Good for Holbrook, okay for anyone who's had non-chain Mexican from a bigger city. read more

Granted, we went here after biking 65 miles through the Petrified Forest so they could have served us almost anything and it would have tasted great. I really was looking forward to eating here. I was on a job near Holbrook for a week, and quickly exhausted all of the restaurants in town that looked worth trying. I came across Romo's on my last night in town, and was instantly pleased with my choice, as the chips and salsa (especially the salsa) provided upon being seated were delicious. I was dining alone, and was in the restaurant with patrons at two other tables. I ordered the green chili enchiladas and continued to enjoy the chips and salsa. A significant amount of time goes by, the chips and salsa have been eaten (no refills), and several more diners come in to the restaurant. After more than 30 minutes, the host/server (owner?) comes to my table and tells me that my food has been given to someone else, and is sorry. I said "Oh, bummer, I'll wait for them to be remade". The server says "Well, the cook doesn't want to make another order". I asked him why, and he said he didn't know. I said, "What if another customer comes in and orders the green chili enchiladas? Would he make it for that person?" His reply: "He's just being a jerk, and isn't going to make you another order." I don't know if the cook is the owner and can decide to do whatever he wants, or if my server was the owner and is spineless to his cook, or if this place just has awful customer service all the way around. After a few more words relaying my disbelief, I walked out pissed off and embarrassed. To this day, I can't imagine why I wasn't served: obviously from out of town? single diner who would probably have a small total on the bill? Who knows. Stopped on our way to Arizona. The waitresses are extremely friendly. I ordered enchiladas with red chili and cheese - it was piping hot and very delicious. We were in town for a night and tried Romo's based on other Yelp reviews. First - They do serve spirits, we had Margaritas that were OK, from a mix but not bad and they were very willing to give us more limes to cut the sugar. The service was excellent on a Friday night with every table filled and they were still really friendly. I'd recommend getting chicken based dishes rather than the shredded beef as the chicken was nicely marinated but the beef was pretty plain. Overall an enjoyable meal clearly made with some care. read more

A great little restaurant surprise in Holbrook, AZ. After seeing sites in Monument Valley and then the Hubbell Trading Post our family arrived in Holbrook late in the day tired and hungry. A quick Yelp search turned up Romo's, a small family run restaurant in downtown Holbrook. While the kids enjoyed grilled cheese sandwiches my wife and I dined on enchiladas and chili renellos. The chili renellos were a bit different than those I've had in the past. These were served between a flour tortilla, cheese filled and mine were topped in green chili sauce.
