Our coffee pilgrimage continues. We chose Rooted because W found the Walnut Creek store on Google. I had to yelp! it, of course, and found the closer Pleasant Hill location. Figured parking would be easier, too. And it was! Ok, so, there was a big ol' line, good sign! We got in the line and started talking to the peeps waiting with us to find out their fav drinks. We quickly learned most people come here for the food--specifically the avocado toast. Ok, I laugh at the avo toast craze, cuz that was a staple made at home as a child some 40-50 YEARS ago. Since I'm sort of on the whole 30 diet right now, I couldn't eat any food made here. But I noticed the parfaits were made with cashew yogurt, and I thought "Yay! I can eat that!" They kindly made me a fresh one with the granola on the side--cuz no grains for me. W didn't order food, he got an Americano with almond milk as recommended by our line mate, and he liked it. I had black coffee--their drip--and it was nice. I went to add some half and half (hence, "sort of" whole 30) and was told Rooted is fully plant-based. Duh. ; ) I get it! So, he offered me sugar/free almond milk! What?! I could have had a latte! In fact, I had my husband go order me one just now! (No line!) Oh, I took a bite of my delish parfait and quickly realized the yogurt has plenty of sugar, not on my diet, so W got to eat it--with the granola... I'm sad, he's happy! Short side of this long post, I want to come back for the gluten free waffles when I can eat a little sugar again (they have a lot of vegan/gluten-free pastries and breads), and maybe try that fancy avocado toast! I'm not sure what else I'd need from a coffee shop. The espresso drink was solid, the avocado toast w with cashew cream cheese and red pepper was delicious and satiating, the outdoor seating was plentiful and it was so easy to park in the private lot. It happens to be vegan, but I am not and I didn't miss any of my usual dairy at all. If you aren't into avocado toast, there are waffles and donuts, too. Worth a visit! read more

My favorites are the chick pea wrap and the avocado toast with micro green and balsamic. The Oat Milk Chai Latte is the greatest. Can't be beat anywhere. It is Spicey and your first sip will surprise you. Love this little place. It's busy and parking can be a little tough. This place closes early at 1pm. Rooted is my favorite coffee shop in Walnut Creek. The ambiance is pleasant, the staff is friendly and the coffee is always amazing. They are very dog and kid friendly, have great indoor and outdoor seating and with the wifi and electrical outlets you can easily spend the day here. I've been loving the fall seasonal menu, especially the pumpkin spice chai, it tastes like real pumpkin spice and not just sugar. Rooted is a coffee shack in Pleasant Hill, there's no indoor dining but they do have a few picnic benches outside. I ordered an Iced Lavender Matcha which was yummy! I ended up going to the Rooted in Walnut Creek yesterday and I got the same drink again! They have a creative (if pricey) menu of coffee and tea beverages, as well as an assortment of colorful/healthy food items. I ordered the 16oz Cardamom Maple Latte with macadamia nut milk. Their standard beverages are fairly sweet, so I specifically asked for mine to be lightly sweetened. This is not a fast-food stop so I do not recommend coming in when you are in a rush! While they operate at a leisurely pace, the care and attention put in to every drink is obvious. The interior is small, but their covered picnic tables in front of the shop provide a welcoming hangout space for customers (and their furry friends). This is a pretty cool coffee shop; it's a very hipster-like coffee in terms of their non-dairy milk options and healthy foods selections. Girls' date. My order: avo dream, beloved (raspberry oat milk latte). I LOVE BELOVED. The barista suggested oat milk and I'm so happy I went with his recommendation. Not tart but you can still taste the notes of raspberries. The avo dream wasn't as dreamy - the sourdough was a bit too cultured for me and its taste overtook the avocado mash and fixings. Plenty of outdoor seating, just hot in this weather coupled with a dose of mosquitoes/flies. They close early compared to some of other local coffee shops (COVID hours perhaps?). I really wanted to love this place. I'd had a bad chai from the Walnut Creek location before, but was hoping that was just an off day. After trying this location and a different drink, don't understand all the positive reviews. We ordered drinks for the office from here today and they were terrible. The Pumpkin Spice Latte had about a cup of cinnamon dumped in. Don't get me wrong.. I love cinnamon.. but I felt like I was coughing it out after each sip. It was somehow bitter and watery. How do you mess up a PSL? Even the bad ones are usually still tolerable, but this went down the sink after several attempts to choke it down. I thought maybe they accidentally dumped too much cinnamon in mine, but both PSL's were the same way. Everyone who got the Iced Matcha in some variety also said it was bitter and undrinkable. Enroute to getting my vaccine, I was looking for coffee and some bites. This place turned up, and while it was completely plant-based (I love my whole milk...), the idea seemed intriguing so we ended up stopping by anyway. This place is popular! There is outside seating that's completely full, and a line to order. People come and go, picking up their to-go orders. It took around 45 mins from ordering to getting our food. I got a latte with macadamia milk. It was pretty good, considering that's my first time trying out macadamia milk! Most of these nut-based milks are too sweet for my liking, but this wasn't too bad. We also got an avocado toast (Open Faced Green Goddess) and a waffle with banana and almond butter (Kind and Nutty) to share. The toast was good, especially with the spicy ranch -- perhaps a bit too much ranch, actually? While the waffle was just ok. It could be the gluten-free dough so I'm a little biased. All their packaging are completely compostable, which is super fantastic and quite rare for a small cafe. This cafe is definitely a great place to check out for people who do plant-based diet and live close by. But if you already have great options (i.e. you live really close to SF), you don't really need to trek all the way over here. read more

This is a really a nice coffee shop. They make great dishes . Beautiful dishes. But this is just not for me. I tried a couple of different items off of the menu and its just not for me. I had the waffles with bananas and strawberries but I could only eat the fruit. The waffle is healthy version of waffles so it was thick and tasteless . The syrup reminded me of when I used to get iron treatments. The taste was just awful . I had hot chocolate it wasn't a chocolate taste in sight. I tried a vanilla coffee and it was straight milk. Its like they put so much milk in everything. You cant taste what you're drinking! I gave it three stars because a lot of people frequent here. So its a good place for people with those taste buds. But if you just like regular tasting waffles or morning beverages this may not be the place for you. And side note this coffee cost a pretty penny! You'll spend seven bucks on one cup of coffee. Its more than Pete's and Starbucks. I guess I miss the better quality when all Im drinking is milk. When you say you provide a better quality product I can understand for the food part. What a cute coffee shop! It is also right next to my favorite BBQ spot in my neighborhood. I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon for the very first time because we have been hearing a lot from our friends. It turned out I was there past their store hours. The owner was so kind that she took my order and recommended the ice mint latte. I got this awesome latte, which was creamy, minty and strong! This is such a solid neighborhood staple that continues to surprise me. They have different seasonal coffee drinks that I would never dream up on my own, and they are always so delicious. I have stopped by Rooted in pleasant hill and Walnut Creek now. While away on a trip my friend pulled out her snacks and lunch from Rooted. She shared a piece of her oh mega donut with me and I was addicted from first bite. The salad she got looked really good as well so I knew I needed to go for myself. Coming to this location there is plenty of parking. My oh my is the outdoor seating so cute. Many spots available to bring kids, pets, bikes and more. Of course I got an oh mega donut and then tried two drinks the cardamom latte and dirty chai. I would have wanted these iced so make sure you state what you would prefer otherwise you just get hot, they do not ask. I liked the latte more than the chai. I do not think I would try these again. However the donut still left me craving more. The employees were nice and the space was super cute and great. I wish I lived closer as many people looked like they walked from home. A friend of mine has been raving (and posting delicious pictures) of Rooted drinks for the past few weeks, and I finally had the opportunity to stop by and give the little shop a try. First things first - you might be surprised as I was at the location. Rooted is located in a tiny little plaza with pretty tight parking and a small indoor area. There's really only one table and a coffee bar against the window - although there are lots of little tables lined up outside along a white picket fence. Once you enter Rooted, though, everything is delightful. I don't think I've ever been to a coffee shop where the employees are so sweet and friendly. They're happy to recommend drinks (the vanilla latte and cardamom - maple lattes are popular), suggest which plant milk goes best with the drink, and generally & genuinely ask you how you are doing. I love that. I also didn't know this in the beginning, but I'm impressed at Rooted's commitment in being a vegan cafe. Very basic and eco-friendly vibes here, in the best way. It didn't feel like a day for coffee, so I tried a seasonal parfait (chocolate chia-oat) and a matcha latte with oat milk, and both were very yummy. I appreciated the strong matcha flavor without being too sweet. Pro tip - you can also sub out sweeteners with no additional charge, such as getting peppermint syrup instead of maple syrup in the matcha latte. It's a bit quirky but delicious, I promise! Although table space wasn't abundant, I did get a fair amount of work done at Rooted (their wifi is good!) and would love to come back again to support their business and try more of their unique food/drinks! read more

First time visiting this place today... Last time visiting this place today... Kudos to the employees who (apologetically & with a smile) have to implement the draconian, money-grubbing policies put into place by the owners. Apparently, the policy for unsatisfactory beverages is to force the customer to PURCHASE ANOTHER drink at half price. Soooo you're saying after we eat the cost of a drink that ends up in the trash, we should be happy to spend a few more bucks on the chance of another below quality beverage?? Makes total sense. Ordered a cappuccino with oatmilk. It was good/okay. Not nearly as smooth as other places like States Coffee or Mountain Grounds, both in Martinez... Bandadoso in Walnut Creek... or Crêpe la Fontaine in The Veranda. Also ordered a regular, black medium roast coffee. What we got was a slightly grimy, dark roast (or someone burnt their attempt at Medium roast & decided to just go with it). For context, we roast our own green beans & we like a good medium roast or even light roast-- meaning we're pretty familiar with the taste of both. Today we learned that at Rooted, their house blend coffee is considered "medium-dark roast" and apparently when you order a "medium roast coffee" somehow you should KNOW (without being told) that theirs will be darker than an average medium roast (or possibly burnt). So it's YOUR BAD when it tastes like nothing you wanted or expected based on industry standard verbiage. How hard is it to have a description next to your coffee?! Or just tell the customer, "Hey, our 'med roast' is actually more of a dark roast, is that cool?" At least one can temper their expectations from the start. I've never heard of such a policy, but I guess every dollar counts-- even at the risk of deterring new coffee-loving customers' return. We'll keep States Coffee, Mountain Grounds, Bandadoso, and Crêpe la Fontaine in our rotation for the future... where we've NEVER had to return a beverage for any reason. read more

Was in the area and Rooted popped up during a quick coffee search. Love that Rooted is literally a mom-and-pop shop using fair-trade beans and has a plant-based menu. With a line almost out the door, this small shop exudes nothing but hospitality and kindness. Pretty good sized menu with any coffee drink you can think of, toasts and pastries. They offer plant based creamers i.e. Ripple and use compostable/biodegradable cups and lids. Ordered a 16 oz dirty chai which was made with almond milk and it's pretty good, nothing short of flavor here. Very well spiced, the ginger is apparent but I wish it had more cardamom flavor and good caffeine level. Service is relatively fast and friendly. Price is a bit steeper than most places but taking into account alternative dairy, higher quality and fair trade beans and compostable goods it makes sense. Pretty small shop so seating is limited. Good amount of parking though! read more
