Came here for a work function and although I "voted" to go to Roots for our luncheon, I was rather unmoved by the food. I ordered a burger because it seemed to be the most simple thing there. Burger was pretty rare for the medium that I ordered it for. Being that I didn't want to seem rude, I ate it. The burger was pretty bland and uneventful. The bun was rather dry and stale tasting. Service was good, so that would keep me coming back for happy hour or another function, but I'm not sure if I'd go out of my way for this place. read more

Meh. The menu didn't offer anything that looked drool-worthy, so I settled on the soup of the day and a Caesar salad (with anchovies, of course). Both items were a bit bland and nothing special. I would have ordered something that sounded a bit more appetizing, but the menu didn't look all that amazing. Came here yesterday around maybe 5:30 or 6pm? So I want to say happy hour was till occurring although I don't think we ordered anything off the happy hour. Anyway with it only being Tuesday midday we had no problem being seated without reservations. We tried a bunch of appetizers which were all great. The pricing for the menu is slightly above average, but nothing too crazy. I enjoyed the crab and avocado small dish (18.50) and loved it!! the flat bread with pork belly (9.00) was also delicious. Service was great. Staff was friendly. Ordered a bottle of wine and they seem to come by frequently enough to also refill our waters. read more

Just to get it out there....Roots serves the best pan seared halibut I've ever had. Never under/over-cooked, batting 1000 with no disappointments. A limited beer menu, but there always seems something very worthy on the list. He wine menu is more varied. I typically go with the burger and a martini. It's hits he spot. The prices are slightly high but not oppressive, and the quality is great, and the vibe is easy. read more

Love this place! Always excellent drinks and food. Happy hour is the best. I live close by so the atmosphere is set up in such a way that you instantly begin to relax. Really nice atmosphere when you walk in. Feels like a better than average restaurant. Our server was friendly and inviting. The menu has good variety and has something for anyone. The menu prices are reasonable. I tried the roots burger. I asked for a little pink inside and it was exactly that. However the outside was a little overlooked and the burger was a little dry. In no way was it bad though. The fries were also delicious. I am excited to visit again with my wife and try something else on the menu. Out for a business dinner and a colleague chose Roots. What a find! Everything was lovely and so well prepared. Craft cocktails, a great wine list and a yummy cheese plate started our meal. At no time did we feel rushed: we were given lots of space and care to let us chat and kibitz as we liked. I split a wedge salad and it was a really lovely prep that did not suffer from the split at all. Then I enjoyed the scallop app as an entree: just perfection with the right sear, grits and Lordy Lordy hollandaise. My friends had the short ribs and were delighted. It's become our spot. read more

Nice atmosphere, very good service. Best lamb rack I have ever had! Four medium sized chops (generous) with roasted brussel sprouts and carmelized vegetables. Delicious creme brulee for dessert. My husband enjoyed his braised beef and Yorkshire pudding. We will definitely return. read more

Roots is my go to in the Camas area for a nice dinner, lunch, or even a weekend brunch. The service is always spot on, and the staff treats everyone like a regular. The food is excellent, and it's nice to see a menu that is regularly updated. Every time I'm at Roots I feel everyone goes the extra mile to make my experience a memorable one. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place. Excellent service, vibey atmosphere, fair prices & a well thought out menu executed really really well. I've eaten many things here but on Christmas Eve, I had the onion tart as an app, the best pork chop I've ever had in my life as my entree, an amazing bottle of Pinot Noir followed by the Toffee Cake. All...to die for! If I had one suggestion, it would be to offer nicer glassware with the wines. Would love a Pinot glass with my Pinot even if it meant a buck or two more per plate to help pay for it. Cheers! read more

Having just moved to Vancouver my wife and I noticed this place and decided to give it a go. Roots Restaurant and Bar is located in a strip mall type development which speaks to "Chinese" food fine dining as it were. Their prices are commiserate with an establishment with ambiance, a chef who prepares each meal rather than a bunch of short order cooks slapping together a bunch of food, and a wait staff associated with fine dining rather than the Black Bear Dinner. If you have a hundred bucks burning a hole in your pocket don't throw it away here. With corkage at $20.00/bottle, which seems steep for these parts but given they must step on their wines at least three if not more times the twenty bucks seems like a deal. On a positive note though each main dish serving is large enough to feed two people, easy. read more

I was charged $2.99 for hot water and lemon. I paid $100 for the meal (includes gratuity). I expressed my extreme disappointment to Roots...the charge still stayed on my bill for hot water. I do not remember seeing a menu item of $2.99 on last night. If Roots responds to this post and shows me their regular menu explicitly says $2.99 for "hot water and lemon"...I will delete the post. I never been charged for just hot water and lemon anywhere in America. Anyways, I think the smart business thing Roots could of done is to remove the charge once I balked at the charge. The best restaurant in Vancouver, bar none. Better than most in Portland. When I first saw this restaurant in the little mall way out from downtown, I figured it would be gone in a few months. Wrong. Roots has impeccable service, food that is artistic, and flavor combinations that make you think, "why haven't I ever thought of this?". Brad Root is a culinary and business genius. We have been regulars from the beginning. It use to be great. Staff and drinks have always been awesome. Food as gone down hill and they need to change up the menu. I used to love their burger. However, they are holding back. The new bun over powers the burger and the burger is not as thick and juice as it used to be. They are cutting corners. We've come here for manny special occasions, including the most recent New Year's Eve. Nice atmosphere, very professional waitstaff, elegant meals, and reasonable prices for an upscale restaurant. I made reservations (a week before) for my sister in laws and sons birthday for 8 people. I called an hour ahead of time to make sure that they had French fries on the menu. They said they did but that I didn't have a reservation. I gave them my name and number and they still said I had no reservation and could not accommodate a last minute party of 8 in the Christmas season. I had to find a different restaurant with no reservation for our birthday celebration. While finishing our dinner at a different restaurant I got a call from roots asking why I didn't show up for my reservation. I told them that I had called and they said that I didn't have a reservation. Obviously the girl was too lazy to look up the number I gave here but the manager didn't have a problem calling me on that same number to complain that I had skipped out on my reservation. They were not even apologetic. I spent $680 on dinner at another restaurant that was kind enough to accommodate us and am glade for it. Rude and lazy does not make for good food service industry. read more

Went here with coworkers for a lunch outing. Very much appreciated the servers and cooks. As vegan I did not see much on menu I could order besides possibly a starter salad after taking out some things. I asked the server about his recommendation for what I could order without meat, dairy, eggs and he went to ask the kitchen. They made me a delicious stir fry, and afterwards asked how it was. Warrants a second visit, for sure. Took some friends for a nice posh nosh up the Friday before Christmas. Not as packed as I thought it might be. Service was friendly and efficient enough but not exactly refined, warm or wise. That's an observation, not a complaint. The complaint, and the only one I have, is that the servers, on this night anyway, were far too quick to clear our table. This is a lack of training in the finer arts...such as the art of how not to remove someone's unfinished cocktail from right under their nose without asking first. Some of us, especially us older girls with both time and money, like to linger over a good meal...so mind your manners please young man or prepare to be verbally assualted by some of my more colorful colloquialisms. The food was top notch...all of it. Exquisite Kumomoto oysters danced like tiny gems in a champagne mignonette. Wash that down with a bone dry Crater Lake martini and it almost feels as if we never lost the empire. Yep, that good. Main courses too were faultless...yes...you heard me say it...faultless. Pork chop and sides cooked just so. Risotto with squash and mushroom, creamy and flavorful. The potato gnocchi with porcini cream seduced me. I am ashamed...I burned the photos. Had lunch at Roots on 1/5/17 - service was terrible even though there were only a handful of diners. No water or soda refills. (The waiter appeared to be more interested in talking to his co-workers than waiting on patrons.) Soup was cold, and the fish & chips were greasy. We came here to celebrate my grandmother's birthday, and it could not have been a more gratifying experience. Meesh, our lovely server, was so knowledgeable and hospitable. She answered all of our questions and had great suggestions. The food was delightful! Great presentation, and wonderful flavor and texture combinations. We ordered the Puget Sound mussels as well as the crab and avocado starter to get the party started. For our midcourse, we enjoyed the Kind Fisher Farms spinach salad and the soup of the day, a ham and white bean soup. Delectable! For our entrees, I ordered the line caught king salmon, grandma had the pork chop, and my significant other ordered the braised beef short ribs. All of these dishes rocked our tastebuds. So much so that even though we were stuffed, we still ordered a dessert... The toffee cake with vanilla bean ice cream. It was to die for! Because we were all so excited to dig into our different delicacies I only snagged photos of our mains. Regardless, this place is worth coming to if you live in the Vancouver/Portland metro area. I have some coworkers that really like this place. In the four or so times I've been, I've found the staff friendly, but found waiting for the food really, really slow. I've been for both lunch and dinner and we've never had to wait for a table (just a super long time for the food), so I didnt think it was that busy. The food is consistently nice, although not worth the money, in my opinion. If I was going to spend that much on a meal, I would go somewhere with more atmosphere. Roots is a bit on the classy side and has a great atmosphere. Other reviewers have said that the staff was rude or slow. I found them to be quite polite however. The food wasn't good and was very overpriced. I had a burger because I am both cheap and unrefined. I ordered it with blue cheese and coleslaw and both had very overpowering flavors. It was hard to eat for me and i typically love rich flavors like that. There were 8 of us and only the 3 that ordered the rib-eye special really enjoyed their entrée. The highlight for everyone however was desert. Everyone loved what they ordered. I had the pumpkin cheesecake and it was incredible, easily the best cheesecake I have had. I would consider going back just for that. But it would be ONLY that. Other than desert I wouldn't consider ever returning. No stars for apps and entrées but 2 just for desert. read more

Roots. From the name I thought it would be a grassy, all-natural, organic-friendly restaurant in the tradition of Portland(ia). That would not be a bad thing. However, what I found was a restaurant with stellar service, great food and a charming patio area. The service was that of a much more expensive restaurant and the food was great. We went for a Sunday brunch. Crab and avocado are available if that is your taste. The waiter even brought a clean tablecloth to wrap around my young niece who was cold. A great pick by my brother-in-law for a memorable and well-done meal. read more
