After learning that the Fisherman's Wharf restaurant just around the corner was closed for the season, my party settled on the Rose & Crown for dinner. Here's the pros and cons in a nutshell: Pros: - All of the food was exceptionally good, especially the crab cakes and calamari - The atmosphere was "dressy" but not over the top. I mean, come on... it's Delaware. You won't find a place that's French nobility-type formal around here, but this place was upscale and pulled it off well - Great-looking bar, even though we didn't sit there Cons: - Long wait times for food that didn't really make sense. This place isn't that big and wasn't totally packed all night. My party arrived at around 6:45, were told that there would be a ~20 minute wait, but were seated within 10 minutes. Our server knew his stuff and was pleasant, but WOW did he take long to take our orders for both entrees and desserts. He checked up on us every 5-10 minutes after bringing our food out, but we really found the wait to order our food and receive our dessert to be unnecessarily long. The food was damn good though. It more than made up for the wait times. For appetizers, we ordered fried calamari, crab-topped deviled eggs and Parmesan french fries. The calamari was fried perfectly, the deviled eggs were tasty (you get 3 deviled eggs, by the way), and the french fries were cooked perfectly. They were rife with globs of gelatinous garlic, which was kinda weird, but there wasn't a scrap left when we were through. I also got some lobster sliders, which were both unique and well-put together. Another person in my party tells me that the crab cakes were exceptionally good too... lots of crab and not much "filler." She said she likes them as much as Jake's crab cakes. Dessert took forever to get to us but was worth it. If you're in the mood for the richest pudding perhaps ever conceived, order some British butterscotch pudding. It's got to be one of the best desserts I've ever had. Crumbled graham crackers + butterscotch = total heaven. This place has a great historic environment and awesome food. Enjoy! read more

Started with a G&T, a bucket if fries and crispy calamari during HH Unfortunately the Tonic seems to be from fountain with quite some chlorine taste to it or maybe just not the tonic of my taste Fries where not overly crispy and they arrived suspiciously fast Calamari was quite good But, see comment on oil below Then went for dinner ordering the "best damn bacon burger" and went for coleslaw with it To my surprise the burger came quite naked with only the caramelized onions and a little bit of cheese on it, nothing else When I pointed out my surprise to the waitress she responded that they write exactly what it is My bad for not asking Taste was ok but definitely not "the best damn" The coleslaw was sweetened to the point that it resembled some sort of jam No tangyness whatsoever My daughter ordered the summer salad She picked this one as she doesn't like arugula She was of course then surprised that it was with a base of arugula that wasn't listed anywhere The other ingredients where listed Other salads listed arugula As we where a party of 8 it was a bit busy and I didn't realize this until quite late in the dinner I guess we where unlucky to pick one dish that was strictly as listed and one with surprises When I brought it up with the waitress she said "we'll that's the base of it and you should have mentioned this when it came in so I could have brought you something else" (Given how long we had to wait for our dishes in the first place that would not have been a option anyway) And she then went on arguing and this made me feel quite annoyed A simple "I'm sorry that we failed to deliver to your expectations" would have been ok Wine was served without asking if we wanted water with it and we had to ask another waitress for it as we couldn't get contact with our waitress The other dishes ranged from ok to quite good but a general comment is that all the deep fried dishes had a hint of "old" oil taste to them I'm sorry to say that based on this visit I cannot recommend anyone to eat here read more

We were only the second table there when we arrived and an hour and a half later, almost packed seating, the food finally arrived. Two tables served and finished before our food arrived. The fish and chips was seen under the heat lamp for a good 10 minutes before the rest of our food was brought out. Strange thing was all we had was soup and sandwiches!!!! The tomato soup and grill cheese was delicious but could have made that at home and saved 40$. Albeit only one server to wait on the whole restaurant will give some latitude and maybe some customer love and drink refills would have earned another star. read more

My husband and I were in there yesterday for happy hour. We had a wonderful time. The staff was awesome. I love bartenders that talk to me. The guests were also very lovely. Thrilled about this place. I love the fact that the menu has interesting spin on classic bar/pub items and does them very well...It is worth a look to just come in and see the tasteful and thorough renovation that they did to the space (connected to the Hotel Rodney, right in downtown historic Lewes). I have had the crab cake sandwich, the grilled cheese/tomato soup and short rib sliders (slow cooked in 16 mile beer, a local beer)...all were delicious. We have been customers of this restaurant since they were at another location many years ago- maybe 25 years? Went in for dinner last night and had a really nice time. We were seated right away; unfortunately we had to share a menu because they ran out of them(?). Our table was comfortable but our bread dishes had what looked like ashes on them- we weren't using them so we let it slide. Silver wear sparkled. Ordered drinks and they were delicious. Shared some of the best wings I've ever had. The mild were still a little hot, but it was exactly right. They were super crispy and perfectly cooked- I'll measure all others by their standard for now on. Ordered the Duck Confit Shephards Pie but was told it was beef last night, so I ordered the bangers and mash. Husband ordered fish and chips. Both meals were very generous and we took half home. There was a robustness to the flavor that may have been beer but not sure. We both order tomato soup just about any time it's on a menu and we can honestly say it was the best we've ever had. Unlike what a previous reviewer experienced, our calamari was incredibly tender - really we've never had it so tender and we order that frequently too. Rose & Crown in Lewes is a really great addition to the little beach town. I stopped in for lunch and had a delicious bowl of tomato soup and a half grilled cheese sandwich. It was perfect on a fall day. It was just enough food. The soup was light and fresh with basil. The cheese in the sandwich was melty and flavorful. I also got a basket of fried goodies including homemade tater tots, onion rings, and French fries. Who knew a tot could be the stuff dreams are made of! I topped it off with a couple of beers (they didn't suck either). I have eaten at all three of Chef Jay's restaurants (including Espuma and Cabo in Rehoboth). He has created uniquely warm and friendly environments that feel clean, modern, and comfortable each in it's own way. I think maybe the other reviewer needs to consume more roughage in his diet. read more

Had lunch here after a birding walk in Cape Henlopen State Park. Industrial meets mid-century modern decor. Good microbrew selection on tap. I wasn't expecting much, just frozen bar food. Ok, parking can be a little difficult in this area of Lewes but the Rose & Crown is worth the trouble! The outside conceals a wonderful spacious bar, lounge and dining area. The atmosphere is for more of the mature 35 & up crowd. I often travel to Lewes for business and this will become one of my regular stopping points. There happen to be a special going on for burgers the evening I stopped in so I had the Best Damn Bacon Burger. I asked for it medium well but it was more on the medium side. (that should have been our first clue) The décor of the building is great but alas not so the food. I ordered the onion soup which was like my mom used to make (right out of the can) with no flavor and a soggy, cheesy pretzel on top. Our group all ordered the pot roast which was flavorless and fatty and cold. It was on an English muffin base that disintegrated waiting on all of the meals to be taken out of a bag an microwaved. Even salt, pepper and hot sauce could not save it! The service was ok but slow considering the lack of patrons. We will NOT be back, I will wait for good food even if it takes over an hour to be seated. For 45$ each with wine it was NOT worth the price! read more

Went Saturday November 2 for dinner time. Lewes was busy since the weather was great. There was a wit at agave of almost three hours. Really!?! seriously? We decided to try here. Besse me struggled here so we were hoping this was better. It was.w e were served by Tim who was great. We ordered drinks and an order of truffled fries and the duck confir shepards pie. The fries were sooo yummy and hot. The shepards pie was good but a little unusual. A little too many vegetables especially large chunks of cauliflower. Stopped in here after a bike ride from Reho to Lewes along the trail. Had a Brit-tini per bartenders recommendation. it was fantastic. Great flavor and nice and strong. Also had the cream of crab soup. This was good too. No salt or pepper needed. A little too much celery but that is a personal thing. Bartender was extremely friendly and helpful. The Rose and Crown is in a prime location, has hip décor and an inviting bar, and boasts some of the most friendly wait staff I have encountered. The food, however, is inconsistent and mediocre. While I have enjoyed some impressive meals at R&C, the norm of my experience here is disappointment (underdone vegetables, panzanella salad that was little more than croutons with dressing, creamy salad dressings that were warmer than they should have been...) I am sure that, with a little effort, the Rose and Crown could become a destination rather than a convenience. read more
